Is Flashing a i9020T t-mobile variant Nexus s with an At&t Radio Possible? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering if it is possible to flash the i9020T to maybe a different Base-band or Radio, pretty much changing it to an i9020A, I have taken both these phone models apart and the Hardware radio is "exactly" the same version!!! So the Radio band is Software/Baseband contingent I believe, On the T-Mobile Vibrant I could get at&t 850mhz. 3G enable via a service menu by entering *#4636#*#*, is there a service menu option to enable 850 at&t 3G or possibly a kernel/Baseband flash to change this phone, Come on software guys throw me a bone!!!

no, the hardware is definitely different.

No the hardware is not different, I have two different model number phones that I took down i9020T and i9020A and hardware is identical to the T.,,,,Also strange thing is best buy no longer sell's i9020A, they Sell the i9020T for at&t service and do not offer the i9020T for t-mobile at all,...So what I was saying before you decided to offer your "OPINION" based on what you read or heard is that the radio is software/baseband and not hardware determined.
You do know I have both versions of these phones and have dissembled and inspected them correct? Just wondering, cause it seems to me you read the title of the post and just started typing away without reading.

Here is the best buy link
if you would kindly check the model number, and also if you would try to search for the Nexus S for t-mobile, it no longer exists on the site....http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Google+Nexus+S+Mobile+Phone+-+Black+%28AT%26T%29/2356115.p?skuId=2356115&id=1218323076669

I would not go by what they list on a website.
You need to actually find a single t version on att 3g or vice versa.

The RADIO hardware is difference. Your "Vibrant" worked because the PHYSICAL RADIO hardware supported AT&T's 3G bands. The i9020t does not and will not. It does not contain a pentaband HSPA/UMTS radio.
The i9020t ONLY supports the frequencies 900/1700/2100.
The i9020a ONLY supports 850/1900/2100.
You MUST have 850 and or 1900 for AT&T 3G (they use different frequencies in different areas). You MUST have BOTH 1700 and 2100 for T-Mobile as the split their service into up and downstream across both frequencies.
No piece of software you flash is going to what the physical hardware supports.

do you have physical proof to back what you are saying? Because The chipset is exactly the same, just saying, I have both phones in front of me and wireless radio in them is the exact model, bestbuy.com and negri.com are both selling factory i9020T that run on 850/900/1800/1900 1700/2100/1900 bands Quadband and Bestbuy is Selling The GT-i9020T for New At&t Contracts at this very moment,...and I was using the vibrant only for an example, and I understand that you have read somewhere that the hardware is different, do you have a take down video showing different radio/chipset? Not trying to get into a pissing match with you, but I have read the same thing as you have about the i9020T supporting only t-mobile 3G bands, however The Vibrant Example is a reminder only that it is still listed as only supporting T-mobile 3G however *#*#4636#*#* service menu allowed activation of the 850 band WCDMA and At&t 3G worked, Go ahead and argue over and over again though and don't bother trying to explore if this will work or not......
On a side note, XDA has went way down hill since I first Joined, People used to work together on solutions, now there are a bunch of "know it all's" that just come here to share their self inflated professional opinion that is nowhere near any sort of developer experience whatsoever, try getting off your high horse for a minute there and remember this is supposed to be fun and exciting to do cool stuff with our phones.

Here is the radio board it has a Skyworks SKY77529 Tx Front-End Module for Dual-Band GSM / GPRS / EDGE
and a
Infineon 8824 XG616 X-Gold baseband processor ...
These two Items handle the The radio frequencies, The Infineon 8824 is what determines what 3G frequencies are being used, Both Models i9020T and i9020A are using this chipset, the only difference is the Infineon 8824 Chip is flashed with a different firmware one for i9020T T-Mobile and one for i9020A At&t, The baseband is updatable by OTA , it has been updated already on the i9020T.

Frankly you not believing the FCC filing but believing what info that a site like best buy has listed about the phone is comical.

you can flash the att radio onto a tmobile nexus s and vice versa. that IS possible. BUT, you will not have working 3g, edge should work though. this has been done by a few people accidentally. and they have found out that 3g does not work ever again, even after flashing the correct radio again.

Picked up an att nexus from best buy today. It's an A not a T

Went to bestbuy today and they confirmed that the at&t i9020A handles only at&t 3G however they also confirmed the i9020T is quad band and the firmware and baseband is what decides what bands to allow service menu is read off of the baseband so basically what I was told is that samsund flashed the newer manufactured i9020T with at&t network bands enabling 3g because the hardware is there, there is some sort of legal action happening between Samsung and t - mobile that's why bestbuy and Google have discontinued sales of the nexus s for t-mobile....straight from the horses mouth at best buy, was also told ice cream sandwich 4.0 will also have a baseband update to enable the at&t 3g band in those handsets where customers areonly receiving edge data on their i9020T handset that where pervisioned to T-Mobile prior to the product being pulled.

This makes total sense, flashing a radio to a non compatible. Baseband could prove to me disastrous, now a at&t baseband flashed to the i9020T maybe more along the lines of enabling at&t 3g, had a long talk with sales manager at besybuy mobile store today, we talked for over an hour about this subject.

Rogers HTC One X Unlocked on Telus Network

I picked up the HTC One X from rogers on the 19th and unlocked it and set it up with telus.
I'm looking for anyone else who may have done this cause I have a few questions
When I'm in an LTE area my phone will switch to the LTE network no problem but my download speeds are only about 9mbps I know with my HTC Amaze on the HSPA+ I would be able to get around 16mbps download.
Is this just something with Telus LTE network being fairly new? has anyone else got any faster speeds on LTE?
Other than that and the non-removable battery this phone is the bomb I love it not to sure how i'm going to be able to get by with out being able to swap the battery but I'm going to try. I had 3 extra batteries with my Amaze lol.
Just out of curiosity, how did you go about unlocking it? I have had some trouble getting unlock codes for the one I bought. Any help you can give would be great, thanks!

MobileInCanada has unlock codes for the Rogers One X. I haven't unlocked mine, but I have used them in the past, and they've always been reliable. Codes for Rogers phones do tend to be a bit slow to come through them though.

Keep in mind that the HSPA speed on Telus is rated at 42Mbps, while the same on Rogers is 1/2 the speed, or 21Mbps. This is probably why your speed is much slower.
Make sure your APN information is correct, too.
Peter
P.S. I used http://www.cellunlockcode.com/ (cell unlock code) to unlock mine. Like others, it took a few hours. Cost was $12
I've also unlocked my device for Telus network. I got 14Mbps once but average around 9Mbps as well. I don't get consistent LTE 4G coverage however and mostly receive HSPA+ 4g.
Just verifying that if I pick up this Rogers HTC ONE X - I'll be able to use it on AT&T's LTE network once I unlock it, yes?
I called Rogers and the guy told me the phone was the Quad Core version and that it may or may not support AT&T's LTE

The Rogers rep you spoke to is incorrect. The Rogers version is indeed the same LTE version those in the USA will be getting and will work on AT&T given you unlock, get the right SIM, and set up your apn respectively.
I believe there are other members that currently do this.
Just an update on this after further investigation I found that for some reason when the phone shows 4g its actually connected to the hspa network and when the phone shows LTE it is actually only hspda+ network that it's connected to. I'm not sure why it's like this but for some reason the phone won't connect to the telus LTE network.
The specs for the phone show that it should be able to connect to the telus LTE network but I have also read somewhere that rogers might have disabled part of the radio that wasn't being used on there network. Maybe once we get s-off and can flash different radios this will be fixed
Did anyone figure out how to fix this issue? i have a rogers htc one x that i am using on telus network, and my phone always shows 4G, i've never seen the LTE.

Are you sure you're in an LTE covered area? If you are make sure you input the telus HSPA+&LTE apn. Look for it on Google. I've seen LTE on my unlocked One X but only in Vancouver.

I'm also using an unlocked Rogers phone on Telus.
I've had trouble at first getting it to connect to the LTE network. When I changed the Network mode setting under Mobile data to GSM/CDMA/LTE auto, it wouldn't stick.
To fix this I changed the same setting in the info menu by dialing *#*#4636#*# --> Phone info --> Set preferred network mode --> GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto.
After doing this, I can use the regular menu to either turn on LTE or limit the phone to GSM/WCDMA.
This setting clearly works and when it says LTE I believe it is connected to the LTE network. However, my DL speeds seem to be capped at about 7-9 Mbps too. My UL speeds are around 20 Mbps. In 4G mode I get around 8/3 down/up.
Being on all the networks that we have in Canada.the highest LTE.speed I've seen so far is on Bell. 16mb per seconds and even lower speed with Telus or Rogers.

T-mobile 4g Radio

OKAY so I decided to update this thread:
There are two versions of the One X. One with aws bands and one without. I have a device without AWS (I am about 80 % sure). There are reports of people getting 4g on AWS with the Rogers Version as of now, and more testers need to check it out as it could still be possible on ATT.
This flash here theoretically could enable the One X radio to lach onto AWS (The radios here are for the One S Ville.)
http://ville.giev.de/?page_id=42
I have flashed all three, and although I did not get 4g, I got faster ping and a near immediate connection onto T-mobile. To all the people saying this will "brick" the phone, it does not and you have nothing to worry. But as always make sure to do a backup. The radio hacks for the Skyrocket/Note were also based on flashing the Galaxy S2 radio directly on top. This should work the same.
I'm interested in this as well. What does is involved and the risk? I don't have warranty on my phone, so I'm a little bit leery in being first.

if your rooted ull should be fine just make a back up of ur current set up. this is just a clockwork flash, it may not even flash, but if it does then there's a high chance of 4g.
i've done radio hacks before for the droid 3/skyrocket/note all from a similar concept. ex. flashing the t-mobile galaxy s2 radio on the note, to enable 4g.
if anyone could provide me with a better solution for an unlock i am sure i can get this to work. seems that the htc unlocker server is down right now
it's the same thing as flashing different radios via clockwork posted in the One X android dev forum
I'll give it a try, hopefully it won't mess anything up. So I just flash the radio in recovery. If no good, I just flash the correct radio again?
There is a one click no HTC Dev bootloader unlock in the Dev forum.

0.16.31501S.17_2_10.23.31501S.10L
From your link. It flashed correctly. The phone on data and voice still works. I confirmed the version in Settings is not my original:
0.17.32.09.12_10.86.32.08L
I'm still on Edge, but I'm in a crappy cell area, so still not certain if radio or my area. I might give the:
Radio from Stock T-Mobile US (update by rhcp)
0.16.31501S.02_10.18.31501S.08L
Radio a try too.
good to hear no negative results got my phone unlocked so i will be testing tonight. also do u guys have the newer sims or older ones?
I have an older sim I believe. It is one that came from an activation kit I bought off ebay. I tried the T-Mobile radio and same results, still on Edge, but still could be my location.
What in gods name are you guys doing! ? Are you trying to brick your phones? It's already been confirmed that the hardware on this phone does not support the proper bands for T-Mobile 3g!

It's not just the SOC that determines hardware compatibility. There are various radio amplifiers and filters which are tuned to the specific frequencies that the phone is likely to encounter. If a phone is going to be sold in multiple markets, sometimes the hardware filters are set up for all frequencies and some are disabled via software, but often times this is not the case.
It's not impossible that a radio reflash can make it work, though highly improbable.

Interested in this. There might be better luck flashing the tmo radio since I don't think any European operators use AWS bands, correct me if I'm wrong.
Can anyone explain why flashing this radio from a different device won't brick our phones?

I have a tmobile one s, but i also have the one from att and i am so interested on using this phone over tmobile 4g let me know if i can of help. I am using my micro sim that came with the one s and i am getting edge (asume its the latest from tmobbile 4g mucro sim. I am on 1.85 rooted but i did not unlock. though i am sure we can flash through CWM. any ways i am sure there is a way out to get 3g or 4g on the one x on tmobile did not find the way yet.
flashed both of the t-mobile modems no luck for me either, although my ping is significantly higher and connects to t-mobile a LOT quicker.
does anyone know how to edit the LTE settings. it is odd but for most ATT LTE phones they have the 1700mhz frequency i think it would be a matter of just defaulting that....
the radios also show up in my baseband so i have successful flashes
EDIT: one more thing, before i was not able to use data at all considering i had the newer t-mobile sims but now data works but on edge speed.

it's just a file in your system. it could potentially brick your phone but you can always get into recovery and restore. which is why i stated you should create a back up of your device before trying it out.
however, i was fairly certain it wouldn't do that because the internals of the One S/One X are nearly identical, they both share the same processor and most likely similar (if not same, radios).
either way, the the radios work, getting me higher ping, and working data without having to switch out my sim for an older one, hope there is a way to activate the 1700 band !

EDIT 2: apparently there are two models of the ATT One X/XL one with the 1700 band and one without

Likely the software has been changed to support T-Mobile, but the hardware (filters, amplifiers, etc) are non-existent, so you'll never get actual 1700 MHz AWS support.
Of course, this is just a 50,000 foot view perspective without actually trying it myself.

you might be right about this one but there are certain One X/XL's that do have the 1700 band found out through some searching and trying to figure out the reason behind it.
If that's correct.... the people with the 1700 band would have 4g when they flash this radio! also use *#*#4636#*#* to change network type to lte/gsm
--- for other phones though like the Skyrocket/Note they were directly compatible with T-mobile radios.
Okay, I flashed the Tmo One S radio and did not receive a brick. What I did receive is a not-so-good connection that will switch between HSPA+ and 3G quite often.
I don't have a WIND sim to test with, but I tried running AT commands on my phone and they don't seem to be working. I tried doing a network scan with AT+COPS=? waited forever and had nothing displayed.
Strange...

I don't have a WIND sim to test with, but I tried running AT commands on my phone and they don't seem to be working. I tried doing a network scan with AT+COPS=? waited forever and had nothing displayed.
Strange...
--edit--
Rebooted and ran the commands again. Still don't see any AWS carriers.

Don't you need a wind sim to connect im pretty sure the Canadian version will work on aws
Confirmed on my end that even with the T-Mobile radio, I'm not getting HSPA+. Even when I drove by the Moscone center where 1900Mhz was refarmed during Apple's WWDC (maybe it was just that day?). I was hoping this would be like the Note and Rocket where I can flash different radios.
Any other new phone capable of this? The S III? If not, I may have to either wait for 1900MHz refarm or switch to Straight Talk.

Picking up an att s3 today to test it out. Most likely there's two versions of one x one with aws and one without. I know mine doesn't though.

I'm not exactly sure of this one.
If someone is willing to let me cut up their WIND sim (or lend me their WIND microsim), I'll re-flash the tmo radio and meet you somewhere to test it (Toronto, please).

-----edit-----
Just popped in an old WIND sim that I used to test AWS connectivity at first. Saw WIND Away with the standard radio, and after flashing the Tmo radio I see WIND Away and AT&T (AT+COPS=? shows Rogers, ATT, Telus, Bell).
I live by the lake, that would explain why ATT shows up.

LTE not working

Hi,
I've the verizon m8 outside the Us. In my country the LTE network has started to work during the past week and its 1800 mhz/ channel 3.
My htc is s-off, root ofcourse, viper rom but I cant get any reception with LTE!
accordint to htc sites, the verison m8 is truely support 1800 mhz,
So how can I get lte on my phone?
And please don't blow my mind with "why did you bought verizon model if you're not using verizon", It doesn't matter now. I've already bought my m8 and it's from verizon, it was cheaper to buy.
Nobody knows?
Europe freinds?
I'm almost in the same boat as you, I'm using Verizon m8, rooted, soff, supercid and then I installed android revolution hd 8.1 international version. I got lte band 4 working ok as well as calls, sms, mms, e.t.c.
Sent from my C811 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've also tried to flash the WWE radio on my verizon m8 but after 1-2 minte the device got reboot again and again, so flashing radio didn't help.
Nobody has a solution? Verizon said the the m8 support 1800 mhz - band 3, so there must be a way to enable it.

Hey,
Just got back from Europe. I wasn't able to get LTE over there, only hsupa/hsdpa. I installed nv rom and was able to change the bands, and got my data working. Now that I'm back in the U.S. (as of 12 horus ago), I'm unable to get service, go figure. I was using the newest verizon radios and they worked fine.

Hi (shalom
I have went through many specs for our device, and
Found that there is no mention for 1800 band 3
In the verizon M8.
It only appears on HTC site. So it seems the phone doesn't support this
band.

Shalom Thanks for your help, this is also what I think, but i really want to believe that the offical HTC site post this information about band 3 for a reason and that is not just a mistake, ofr now it seems like it's a verison setting as of my opinion.

So are you suggesting to install nv rom? They really have an option to select the spesific band or are you talking about the option of ecdma only/ gsm auto prl... in the hidden menu?

Iv tried nv, it didn't give the option to change for the 1800 band only 1900, or 800. So it didn't work, not that I had much hope.
htc chat
hi
talked with htc chat today and got this reply:
Well, I just found that's some restriction about Verizon (It seems like), because the Phone is made to work on 1800 Hz. Also I'll recommend to you that contact Verizon Tech Support 866-221-4096 for further information –
im not a verizon cutomer.
dont think they will give me support.
is there here someone who is willing to call them?

I'm also not a customer of them but I've already spoke to them once (with different problem) and they were very nice. I don't have problem to call them (although it will take me some days to set up my google voice account again) but what should i say to them? They will probably sai that they don't know what I'm talking about, or that he verizon m8 is perfect and send down from god and the problem is my carrier

I'm talking with verizon right now, they've transferd me from verizon to htc and than back to verizon, that really don't know what i'm talking about. anyone have any suggestion how to talk with them? they can only blame my carrier

Yes, I've also done that. the phone got no signal and reboot itself after 2 minutes. flashing radios doesn't work with cdma phones. I've also tryed install gpe rom (i fought that maybe the sense 6.0 has problem) also didn't work

Will the U11 not work on AT&T next year?

I was just notified that AT&T is upgrading and ridding themselves of 3G. I was also given a list of phones that will still work on the network. The U11 was not included in the list, but my ancient One M9 was. That doesn't make much sense. So will the U11 become obsolete on the AT&T network next year? Any insight on this matter?

Matt from everything I have read,, yes att and cricket both the same company will shut down their 3g network and go with only phones capable of "hd voice" and our htc u11 from what i can gather does not have this quality/software/ chipset or what ever it is,, built in..
More here
What is HD voice? And why is phone call quality usually so bad?
We're used to seeing the HD moniker on videos and TVs, but now it's being applied to audio. Essentially though, it has the same meaning – high definition as in high resolution. Join us as we answer the question – what is HD voice?

So it looks as if we are truly screwed when it comes to elgible carriers in the near future for are antiquated u11. I have already been forced to leave cricket for simply removing my sim and reinstalling,, Maybe someone can further explain why this is hd voice thing is a issue with the u11, did htc simply forget to add the codec???

I get that they are dropping 3G, but voLTE should still work right? When I make a call it says 4G instead of LTE, but I can't find a definitive answer on the difference between the two. Does it look like Straight Talk is going to follow suit, or do you think that our devices will be compatible with them indefinitely? I'm glad you answered because I wanted to discuss it with you, but I didn't want to do it on the LOS thread. Thanks!
I can only confirm that my HTC U11 with LOS 18.1 can make calls with HD voice technology (this should also support device with which you have a voice connection and your mobile operators) and also my device works with VoLTE technology.

Yeah, I think you're right. It just won't be carrier supported. I had to activate my SIM in the One M9 and then put it back into the U11 just to get service. The AT&T system didn't recognize the U Ultra or the U11. Now it's just a game of wait and see if the service gets cut off a year from now. Probably be joining you on Straight Talk.

Yeah, T-Mobile coverage is terrible in my area too. I just got my U11. Flashed it with LOS. Got it in stable condition. Been wanting to replace my U Ultra for a long time with it. Can't really afford a brand new flagship, plus I'm just stuck on HTC. I love their devices. Then I get this news. Literally made me sick to my stomach. I just hope and pray that if AT&T does kick me off their network, that Straight Talk will be my loophole. Hope it keeps working for you too, man.

The phone companies and phone service providers are in bed together. Radio wave technology is the same as ever just fancier. All the fuc^ng 5 gigahertz radio signal output did was enable the cell phone providers to be able to completely shut down half their towers. The higher the gigahertz output the further the signal will carry see? Radio waves bounce up and down, these higher gigahertz are for DISTANCE not penetration. Mobile homes with the metal rooves and siding? Screwed. Brick house with treess in the yard? screwed. Because the radio waves at that high of a gigahertz doesn't penetrate worth a damn! They ALL screwed the customers, now forcing us to once again upgrade when this phone is perfectly capable to continue. Sorry. They all are. Hard to notice you completely loose service indoors when there is wi-fi internet automatically hooking up and taking over your data flow. You'd need a Yagi antennae and a broadcaster to put in the house to bounce the 5G signal around in your home, just like cable wi-fi. Get it? My HTC U11 works perfectly FINE with the internet providers 5G signal output and the 2.4 G output. So why will these phones not work with the carrier 5G? Think about it. I upgraded my 8 year old computer to be compatible with 5G simply by changing out the antenna that snaps in the motherboard. These cell phone companies and providers are screwing us to force us to keep purchasing more and more equipment, and the cable providers are helping them by disguising the loss of service with their wi-fi routers. Damn greedy bass turds.

You are dead nutz on , ever since they switched to 5 g my cell service is crapola,, as I live in a area with trees and hills, never had the issue before,, I was forced to sell my u11's at rock bottom prices, now even with a newer pixel I still have to rely on WiFi calling to hold a decent conversation. I could buy a 1500.00 flag ship and the results would be the same.
A yagi antennae pointed at the closest tower with an internal receiver set to 5g should have the 5g signal all in the house like a cable wi fi router. They are not difficult to set up. A person not very electronically inclined could set up the broadcaster. The antennae is not that big and easy to mount. Use the cat 5 cable to connect outdoor antennae to indoor broadcaster. The diagram for which wire color goes where should be shown. Before buying make sure all is 5g capable. Just Google search they are on sale on the internet probably not very high they used to not be but the world is different now lol

8T having data/radio issues ... After EU conv

So I'm seeing this issue back in January from other users forgive me for wanting a rebooted thread on current software.
I have a KB2007 with a build now that of
11.0.10.10 GLOBAL-EU KB2005BA
Originally purchased from Sprint, after the merger was given T-Mobile SIM cards and if I call tech support route through T-Mobile SIM network is T-Mobile everything's T-Mobile.
Before the conversion didn't have radio issues and I called tech support today they had me pull the Sim rebooted put to sim back in and rebooted again. It seem help ( before I literally had no connection for phone calls without Wi-Fi calling) as now it can at least show 5G connection. However the upload speeds are concerning I think? I live in Kansas City and have amazing signal coverage typically even in a tunnel LOL
People take a look at this and give me your thoughts? I was about to roll it back over to the TMO software earlier, I was that frustrated.
Bootloader unlocked- Magisk w/ minor modules
Thank you for your time in advance

@OP6Tluvvvaa,
First off, I want to thank you for the level of detail in your post. Usually, when I respond to a post, I have to start with numerous questions, just to determine what the actual question is.
I happen to own a KB2007 on T-Mobile and I am VERY happy with it.
My 5G speeds have been excellent. I live in Las Vegas, which is rated like T-Mobile's #2 network site by speed on connection.
One thing I CAN tell you is you should not under any condition be establishing an HSPA+ connection for your mobile network.
Your speed test App, however, shows you have an LTE connection, which seems much more likely in line with the speed you are getting.
Your download speeds are actually not bad, but your upload speeds are anemic.
Where I live (at home), I actually get better upload than downloads speeds on my 5G connections, this is very uncommon, however.
What is your full BASEBAND version under About phone->Status ?
The BASEBAND code largely determines how the 5G connection is established, and the resultant upload/downloads speeds.
In the USA, if you are on T-Mobile's network, you should have
BASEBAND version: MPSS.HI.2.0.c9-00145-SDX55_RMTEFS_PACK-1.367946.14
if you have a european BASEBAND version, this could be causing your problems.
I'll check right now, what blows me away is that I cannot be the only 2007 model that did the conversion, that is experiencing the issue right? You think it would be widespread baseband issues or not connecting to the right ones.. and that debloating aside it would have been massively talked about on XDA?

Yes, you definitely have an older BASEBAND.
The thing is that on the T-Mobile branded OnePlus phones, T-Mobile supplies custom T-Mobile specific BASEBAND code for the build.
That's the main reason I hesitate to install a "GLOBAL" image to my phone.
I figure that T-Mobile is going to supply the fastest, most optimized code for their network.
Let me to a little research on this. I am pretty sure you can install "just" BASEBAND code on your phone if you are rooted.
