[HOW TO] Ubuntu on your Android phone! ~ Linux Fans ~ - Samsung Infuse 4G

Here is a YouTube video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d_diU7i7Z0&feature=related
You will need to download "Terminal Emulator" and "Android VNC" all free from the Android Market...
Download the ubuntu.img, ubuntu.sh, and the ubuntu.sh.md5 file from here:http://www.2shared.com/file/9mIyT0pl/Ubuntu_All_files_needed.html
Then make a folder named Ubuntu on your SD card and transfer them there.
Open up termial emulator and type "su" then hit enter
Next type "cd sdcard/ubuntu"
After that type " sh ubuntu.sh"
(ignore the warning)
Then open Android VNC.
Address: localhost ((or keep empty, it may work better for some that way))
Password: ubuntu
Port: 5900 ((if this doesn't work, try 5901 or leaving it blank))
BPP 24
You're all set!!
the YouTube video method is pretty straight forward and should work for most people...
if not, try the method below..
it's a little more intense, it requires a lot of command line in terminal, and possibly using ADB shell
here are the links I followed to get it on my phone:
this one has the bootubuntu image and initial directions:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723493
and this one finishes it up:http://nexusonehacks.net/nexus-one-hacks/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-your-android
this is another guide that might get you going
:http://androlinux.com/android-ubuntu-development/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-android
some guides work for some and not others... so give them each a shot
you can always erase the files and no damage will be done to your phone.
it is NOT like flashing ROMS, so give it a try and ENJOY!
NOTE: I do not take credit for this, or consider myself a "pro". I just stumbled upon this while searching the internet and have successfully installed it on half a dozen phones. And wanted to pass it on to fellow members who would be interested in giving it a go, or Ubuntu/linux fans. Thank you.
PS. I attached a couple pics... I know a thread is worthless without pics

How does it run? Do you have a link to the specific guide or image you used?

this one has the bootubuntu image and initial directions
http://nexusonehacks.net/nexus-one-hacks/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-your-android/
and this one finishes it up
it runs ok. i think its similar to my 2006 laptop with a celeron processor running ubuntu 10.04
it lags a little but its cool

how are your data speeds, etc?

speeds have not been affected at all.
Ubuntu runs inside the android os like any other app
I can still receive texts and calls while inside ubuntu
and when im done, I simply exit back out of Ubuntu and Im back to my original phone... or in my case, my MIUI setup

i can not get it to bootubuntu. two days of this:
Ubuntu Bootloader is now installed!

well i got it installed while in recovery but i still cannot boot into it from miui.

I found a much easier way (imo). works good. thanks for turning me on to this. lots of fun.
Here is the link for the video instructions:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d_diU7i7Z0&feature=related

Ya. I had some troubles getting it to run at first. I think I put "su" and "bootubuntu" in the initial prompt on the terminal and reboot the phone. And then run terminal quickly. I guess it had something to do with the drive mounting or something.
I'm really not sure. It was mostly trial and error for me for a couple days until I got it working.
Nice find on the video jonnypinkeyes.
Glad you are enjoying it.

bump for those who want to give it a shot.
the youtube method is very very simple! you can get it running within minutes
your phone can still be used fully, it doesnt wipe anything!

Question- what would you be able to do with it that you basically can't do already?? Because this looks interesting

you can use just about any program that you use with ubuntu on a desktop, on your phone. It does have some practicality issues i guess but if you are a ubuntu fan its pretty sweet. The ubuntu image from the youtube post is a fully functional image. I have upgraded to natty using the update manager. It does consume some gigs of memory though. I think my ubuntu image is up to 5gigs now.
I use QBittorrent to download lots of shiz. I downloaded Donni Darko the other day with QB . 720p and took about 10 min. I opened a terminal and moved the file to my sd card with no problem.
Give it a try, If it sucks , dump it. There is no risk of bricking or anything like when flashing.

check out torrentz.eu
i transferred it from my phone to my computer and watched it off that,
haven't tried watching it off the phone yet, it might be possible to exit out of ubuntu, find the file using root explorer, and using a compatible player to view it.. not 100% sure on that though
also..... johnnypinkeyes....
when you updated through the update manager... did it give you any trouble?
when I try it, I get an error saying I need more disk space...
but I have over 5GB free...

recovering partitioned internal memory

I recently used Frank's Tools to dual boot Ubuntu on my Tablet.
After I later realized it wasn't for me, I used the generic root kit to revert to android only OS.
I now see that my internal memory is only showing as 7.36 gb
I would like to know how I can go about recovering the partitioned memory
I have tried using frank's tools, and choosing android only but it gave me the error
"Nvflash started
nvflash configuration file error: file not found"
Some help would be much appreciated.
There should be a flash.cfg file in there- monkey around with the partition sizes and see if that fixes the issue.
I'm not familiar with Frank's tools, so can't help you there. My wild guess is that the rom files aren't unzipped and in the same folder as the nvflash executables.
You might try to download and flash the nvflash version of Prime or another custom rom since it will have the stock partition sizes.
Hi there go to little stevies thread download olife.sh and set up the enviroment put the rom you want in images boot.img system.img recovery.img
Run olife.sh and go to the option flash then select stock it will resize all the partitions and flash the rom you put in images i usually use the script just for flashing new roms makes sure i get a super clean install

I know i can install it and dual boot my PC with ubuntu, or simply just run a VM of ubunt on my PC.
All i know to do in Ubuntu us open up the terminal by hitting Ctrl+alt+f i beleive
Can anyone show me a step by step way of doing so?
Stevies thread asumes you have knowlege of ubuntu, but I just don't.
Even better has anyone been able to acomplish this with windows?

You can have ubuntu run next to windows just download the wubi version from the website it lets you have dualboot and if you get sick of ubuntu you can just uninstall it like any other win program.
As for the steps to setting up there are 1000 youtube vids on how to set up adb etc on ubuntu and there very easy to follow
Once you have watched a few of those videos you will have a folder in your home folder called platform-tools thats where all the good stuff goes for android and thats where lil stevies thread pics up from..
I was completly new to linux and android when i got my gt540 but after 2-3days i was happy flashing and modding and now with my tf doing even more with the system.
If you have a little patience and dont mind watching a few youtube vids you can get the whole lot set up and done and ready for future use in an hr or so
Understanding it or what your doing is the part that will take 2-3 days lol

**UPDATED**Tester with gremlins needed

As always, READ the ENTIRE OP...
If you are having poor performance/battery life and want to help me finalize a project/ addition to the 1-Click Gremlin Remover, let me know...
Awesome! So now that I have a few people that are willing to test that have protential gremlins, I am introducing a possible addition to the Gremlin Removal process. This method is a less destructive technique as oppose to reformating everything and starting all over again (aka the 1-Click method).
This is mainly intended for those who are only experincing less malicious gremlins, meaning you aren't dropping 20% battery every hour, have extemely laggy performance with FC's, etc. However, it is possible that this method could fix even the most extreme performance issues (or not do much at all...lol)
**Make sure you have adb installed on your PC**
Step 1
Download the System Cleaner.zip and copy to the root of your sdcard (see attachments at bottom)
Download the tune2fs.zip, unzip it, copy the file (tune2fs) to the root of your sdcard (see attachments at bottom)
Plug phone into PC via usb
Boot into recovery
Open cmd prompt and type:
Code:
adb shell
cp /sdcard/tune2fs /tmp
chmod 777 /tmp/tune2fs
Now we have our filesystem check environment in place.
Step 2
Unmount /system, /data, and /cache (we can leave the sdcard mounted)
Open cmd prompt and type:
Code:
adb shell
/tmp/tune2fs -l /dev/block/stl9
/tmp/tune2fs -l /dev/block/stl10
/tmp/tune2fs -l /dev/block/stl11
In the output of all three partition checks, you need to look for one of these variables:
Code:
Filesystem State: clean
Filesystem State: not clean
Filesystem State: dirty
If it is "clean", this may not do much for you. If it is "not clean", you didn't unmount that partition. But if it is "dirty", this will fix many issues.
Step 3
Regardless of which state your filesystem is in, we can still run the System Cleaner.
While in recovery mode, flash the System Cleaner.zip as normal. It uses the Aroma Installer so just run it as you normally would. Notice that you only have 1 option to "install" or run the cleaner. I plan to add more to this project, but I want to get the base of it up and running.
This is a fairly quick process but allow it to run fully without touching the device. You will also be prompted to restart or not. I haven't gotten that option working correctly so it doesn't mattter what you choose, you will still have to reboot manually. When the installer is done, click next, finish and you will go back to CWM.
Step 4
After the filesystemcheck is done, run Step 2 again and note your fielsystem state (especially if it was dirty).
Step 5
Reboot the phone and monitor your performance, etc.
A bit of insight into what this is/does:
This method is using a binary called fsck.ext4. Broken down explination:
Code:
fs= filesystem
ck= check
ext4= filesystem type
Pretty redundant I know.
Now, what it does, is runs a filesystem check and defrag, much like windows disk check and defrag. It fine tunes the file systems, realigns things as needed, and cleans up the system. Just like our computers, our phones need a good cleaning from time to time and this little thing will do just that...lol
Again, this is just the base for a larger project...

Try Lightning Zap v5 for better battery life... Link is in my signature
flashed it before restoring any apps.
its working wonders performance wise, lets see how battery life goes as it soaks in hehe
My phone was clean on all volumes... Commands worked fine and and ran system cleaner just for testing purposes anyways. All is well
Awesome to know it is working, now I just need someone who has gremlins from multiple flashes and what nots to see how well it fixes things...lol
Thomas,
Are you sure that defraging is necessary on a flash drive... with SSD (solid state drives) it's even doing more bad by wasting limited amount of erase cycles. And btw, fragmentation does not affect reading speed as much as with regular HDD because of very low latency.
During defragmentation (if utility is not aware about how flash memory works) there might be multiple P/E cycles on a typical block of 16, 128 or 256KB.
There are utilities which will erase free blocks on SSD - fill it with "1" so that next write to such blocks would be faster. Does your utility do something like that?
Ill be willing to test it for you.
50 flashes and no clean ups yet.
Don't have gremlins thou.
it pm the results later.

This "defrag" is for our devices... fsck have been used on android phones for some time now... It isn't a true defrag as you would think with a normal hdd. But it is the best way of explaining it.

[Q] Noob Clockwork Mod Install on mac

Trying to root and install CM10. On CM's wiki it says to Place the libusb-1.0.0.dylib library from the zip inside /opt/local/lib on the machine...I've researched and played with this all day, and I have no clue what they are asking me to do. I am pretty sure that's where my error is. When handshaking with Loke it fails to respond. Using Heimdall on a mac.
Thanks

Heimdall is very flaky on the Mac. Try completely removing Kies and see if that helps. Thats what got it working for me the last time I used it. Now I just boot into my windows partition and use Odin. It never fails.
And btw - there is no /opt directory on the Mac unless youve installed Darwinports or made it yourself. Even still you would have to add it to your $ PATH. You could move it to /local/lib if your comfy with unix commands. I dont remember having to do anything like that though but its been awhile.

Already removed Kies, that was the first problem. Was saying no device connected for download mode beforehand. I have parallels and may just download odin and find other instructions to do it through windows. Not sure if it's Heimdall being flaky or me just not understanding what CM means by placing that file in the library.

Yeah opt=optional. Its just another directory you can put executables in to keep them separate from the system and users own /bin, /lib, etc. Port apps like Darwinports installs its stuff to /opt and Fink uses /sw. Same function but different locations.
I think I tried Odin using Parallels/Win 7 (that was before I just boot camped it) and I think it worked. Just gotta install the samsung usb drivers.

[Q] Considering Building a ROM

Hey everyone. I am considering making a custom ROM, in particular, one that has a custom theme to it. I was thinking of maybe making a Star Wars themed AOSP one, maybe just 4.1.2 for stability for now. I was just wondering some things. The first problem is I have no clue about developing, so I'm sorry if my assumptions are stupid.
I was wondering if developing a ROM would be like either:
A. Taking an AOSP ROM (with permission from Devs), and tweaking system files, and then making it into a ZIP again
or
B. Would I need to compile something myself and tweak system files and things from there?
Thanks in advance for your answers
You would have to do the ROM from scratch. Try using android kitchen it would help you a lot.

Best suggestion trying Ubuntu as you can dual boot it with Windows.& the instructions are easier to follow.
Boy, I'm having a field day trying to get this working xD. I install linux, open terminal to install Java (ia32 libs), and I get this:

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-multiarch but it is not installable
openjdk-6-jre-lib : Depends: openjdk-6-jre-headless (>= 6b17) but it is not going to be installed

EDIT: Never mind, I was confusing it with Linux Mint I think. It's sudo -s
EDIT 2: NVM, Java was there in the package thing
Wait are you using the guide I sent you? Because when I used it I had no problems what so ever.

I had Ubuntu 12.10 loaded, I went to 12.04 and things are a heck of a lot smoother now
I'm making good progress now. I'm working on compiling AOSP, going to try CM10.1. I'm having a problem though. It won't let me download the repo. This is what happened:
[email protected]:~/Source$ repo init -u git://github.com/BeerGang/android.git -b cm-10.1
fatal: 'git' is not available
fatal: [Errno 2] No such file or directory
Please make sure git is installed and in your path.
Whoopsies! Missed a step, installing some packages I missed, will update and see if it works ;D
That is great I hope I was of some help.
Keep me up to date with your progress please as I would like to know how it is going.

Well right now I'm compiling "again". The first time I didn't set enough space in linux for the partition, so I ran out of space in the repo sync. I should be good now, but I think sometime I'm going to have to reinstall my old hard drive, or get a new one. Who knew a 1 TB drive could fill up so fast? xD

OG Battery Mod

So I'm trying to get OG's Battery mod working on my g2x. When i run the app installer on my PC i get the error 'failed decompiling system.UI'
I'm running wolfscript on my phone. I was wondering if the tweaks/mods in wolfscript would be causing the error?

Now it's telling me that the System.UI apk cannot be found....even though I can get to it in about 2 seconds using root explorer. WTH!?

Decompile? Change extension to zip.

I do not know how to decompile apk's....
However, I know that wolfscript isn't the problem because I pulled the systemUI.apk and the settings.apk files from a previous nandroid I made before flashing wolf and tried to use the battery mod using the "mod existing files" option and I received the same "failed decompiling systemUI.apk
Do you really think that changing the extension to zip could help?
It can find APK's both from my phone and from existing files on my pc....in both instances it's giving me the failure to decompile error. GRRRR this is so aggravating all I want is ONE of the battery icon mods...I want the little droid symbol with the percentage number in the image lol.
**EDIT- Mansa I know you're pretty good with coding...My log shows this error --> 'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
**EDIT AGAIN- Ok after googling the error I realized that it was due to not having Java installed on my pc. Installed latest working Java. Now I'm back the program telling me that it cannot find my systemui.apk. Here is what my log says-
C:\Users\MyPC\Desktop\OG Batt Mod\Tools>adb -s "037c700842a04557" shell

What does that mean?
Seems like adb is either not installed or not in the path
Exit the adb shell before issuing another adb command. Based on your log you were still in it. A simple control+c would do the trick.

Pull the apk to your pc. Then you can do whatever you want with it. That is where you can browse inside the apk by changing the extension to zip too. Been there, done that!

Well I'm not manually issuing any commands....I'm just selecting what setting to use via battery mod setup program. Its obvious I'm not knowledgeable enough about how to use adb in order to do this....Google here i come lol
I can't even get adb running on my PC ....i installed it using sdk. Adb.exe opens for a brief moment and then closes automatically..

adb is a command line program. Open a command prompt, cd to the folder and type adb to see the help.
