Why are they making the phones bigger and bigger? - General Questions and Answers

I want to buy a high end android phone but the problem is that the maximum screen size that is comfortable for my hands is 3.7". I have extensively used the galaxy S and it doesnt feel comfortable to use with a single hand, this is the big problem I want to be able to comfortably use my phone with a single hand and with any 4" or bigger phone I just cant. Yes I have small hands.
Now onto the galaxy S2, I love it so much but dear god the size...
Now that I search it seems the motorola atrix is the only dual core phone with a somewhat manageable size with it's super thin bezel however I just dont like the phone. I want a premium camera and display plus powerful hardware as I dont frequently change phones.
The SE Xperia Neo seems to be the best small phone, if only it had a more powerful chipset. Atleast SE gives it's small phone all the features unlike others so props for that.
Now whatever the hell is HTC and samsung doing?? Have they not seen how much the iphone still sells with it's "small" screen? Isnt it obvious that there is a pretty big market who dont want a mini tablet in their pockets?
Where is a 3.7" version of the galaxy S2 or sensation? Where is samsung's actual answer to iphone 4S? I am sure they can make a smaller version of the S2 but they just dont think it's necessary which in my opinion is a big mistake.
If this trend of giving small phones the short end of the stick continues then sadly I'll have to switch to iOS or WP7.

Actually one of the biggest complaints from Iphone users is the screen size. Right now, bigger is better, and consumers what big phones.

Still it's breaking records and I personally also was disappointed as I was expecting a 3.7" widescreen which can easily fit into an iphone without increasing it's dimensions in any way. I wasnt expecting a monstrous screen but I thought they would finally move to a better aspect ratio and get rid of that thick bezel.
Yes I know the S2 is also breaking records which shows that there is a big market for both big and medium screens.
The thing is we need to have 2 versions of iphone, one big and one small and everyone will be happy. Same should be the case with the galaxy S2.
But apple is known for not giving enough choice, android on the other hand is all about choice but sadly not in this case it seems.

I'm actually looking forward to the day when a 5" screen is the norm. It would be a nice hybrid replacement for a smartphone and a tablet.
I used to think my Evo 4g was big when I first got it. I was upgrading from a 4 year old Cingular flip phone. But I quickly got used to it, and I've still got more pocket space for a bigger device

Because the most wanted feature in a smartphone is touch screen. And since most of the populace has medium to big hands making a small sized touchscreen is uncomfortable and illogical. Hence why smartphones are now becoming bigger.

Pocket space is never an issue, it's single handed usage which is just very uncomfortable with the bigger phones.

Now I dont have abnormally small hands by any means, I just value comfortable single handed usage more than some other people. I can manage with a galaxy S but it's just that I dont find the extra 0.x" to be worth the added discomfort in single handed usage.
And 3.7" is by no means small to the point of being uncomfortable for people with really big hands, plus I am not saying they should not make big phones. Just give the choice of both.

It is uncomfortable not in the sense with grip, but the fact that that have big fingers, hence they have less precision and more prone to mistakes. Plus I own a sgs 2, and I have medium hands or small hands and I have never found it uncomfortable. But that is simply a subjective opinion.

Not all of us do. One of the reasons i still have my N1 is because i like the small screen. I would consider a 4" screen, but any bigger than that is too big for me. As the OP said, where is the choice right now?

So, 4" Display is enough. If more too big.
I prefer 3.7"

great news! - there's no sacrifice necessary, you can have the best phone and 3.7" size! - It's called a T-mobile G2

Whatz up with 4.3'' screen

All the new smartphones, especially with android, is coming out with 4.3'' screen. Why so big?? 4'' is pretty big, but if the phone is slim enough, you can sleep it in your jeans. But for 4.3'' it's way too big.
I don't understand why companies like HTC and motorola is trying to make huge ass phones. If anything they should trying to get Super AMOLED or retina display (and gyroscope). And the thing is people are buying it!!! Where do they put their phone??

ummmm... idk what type of pants you wear (probably super-SKINNY Jeans) but for most people, a 4.3 in screen is very easy to slip into ones pants. Once again, I don't know how small your hands are, but a 4.3 in screen really isn't that big... I would say 4.7 in is more like it, why would you possibly want a multimedia device with a tiny 4 in screen?? You can barely watch a movie on it. Maybe you should just stick to an iphone
i have a hd2 but i dont have any problem with the size, i even have a capdase case around it that makes it larger but i still dont notice its there. and i have a job that involves a lot of walking (waiter)
My Galaxy S, with its 4" screen, is actually pretty much the same dimensions as an HD2 with a 4.3" screen - there's just not much else on the front of the device. That said, I wouldn't want to go much above 4.3", or it would become uncomfortable even to hold in one hand, let alone put in your pocket.
It might be best not to ask unrelated questions in random threads, Sonic10101010, as people won't find them. If the card is microSDHC, is the reader compatible with microSDHC cards? That sounds like the most likely problem to me.

Just plug it in with your phone's USB cable and choose file transfer mode!
On topic now,it's more a thing of personal preference. For people like you who aren't the type who will get a huge screen phone there are phones with smaller screens like the Legend and the Hero,or even smaller like the x10 mini.Compared to 4,3'' the Desire's 3,7'' also looks small, but it's big enough.I have a Desire myself and using it after I had a Hero(which has 3,2") I thought it's screen was huge, which I kinda like because I watch a lot of movies on my phone, but then I found myself in an electronics store and put it next to a Leo.It did seem too tiny...
Why the hell not? I'd personally like a 5" screen. If you want a tiny screen stick to a low end basic phone. Loving all the new high end 4.3 stuff.

i also think a 4.3 inch just way too big for a phone...
it wouldnt even fit nicely in my palm...
my current phone has a 3.8inch screen and i find it just acceptable.
i have a hero and with me being a truck driver i use it the same as siriusxm but using pandora and with unlim. data, well you figure it out but the screen is just right for me
Eh I put my phone in my bag and car. Never really felt that a phone can be too big as long as I can hold it in my hand.
My HD2 fits in my pocket perfectly, way better then my older smaller thick phones. The new 4.3inch LCDs are so thin they fit into your pocket perfectly. Plus once you use a real 4.3 inch cap. LCD you will never want anythign else. Also I'm 6'4 and 240 pounds with very big hands. If your a big hands guy your loving these new 4.3 inch LCD's. Were all build different to with very different sized hands and pockets so its gonna be everyones own preference.

[Q] Do you really like "bigger and bigger" smartphones?

Hi guys,
As you can guess, I'm not fan with latest smartphones like Galaxy SII and SIII, HTC Sensation, and so on.
I consider them simply too big to be used as phones. I could never do or answer a call with these ones.
I think of them like "monster" phones.
Why, Is there no new android phone (high quality level) with dimensions lower than 4.0 inches?
I think this is a thing Iphone is better than other phones (at the moment).
Do you really like "bigger and bigger" smartphones?

I like bigger ones, to a point, too big gets uncomfortable to use, the sensation might be the biggest I can use (I have small hands) smaller screens are harder to see for me. my eyes are going. soon time for glasses.
i like S3 and One X but i think bigger phone like Note is great for the big screen but to unusefull for the too big dimention
I like very much but i think the Galaxy's SIII size is the limit to be cool.
Big phones are good to a point. The galaxy note is too large.
I do not see what the big problem is?
Why do people moan about size? It's perfectly fine size.
Smart phone that is. You just get used to them. Big deal. move on.
well that all depends on your use and really preference. I got the Note a month ago and dont regret it at all. Honestly when i pick up a captivate with 4 inch screen i have trouble using it. If i was to just want a smartphone for regular smartphone stuff instead of a tablet phone, then i would have to go under 5", but i like the option of screen real estate just in case. Its really just comes down to preference.
uhm...,
obviously I don't refer to Galaxy Note, its not a true smartphone at all.
It has been created for other purpose, and in this case I could agree with dimensions.
Anyway in my honest opinion:
1. For me it's a pain to stay more than 5 minutes in call with a SGII near my ear. Too big for one hand.
2. It is not so smart to use more than one finger to reach all the corners of the display.
3. It is not so handy
4. It is not so comfortable in pocket.

Yes, the only new smartphone the suite my needs is the Experia Sola, but it is not the top in the hardware.
I haven't found other smartphones with 3.7''-4'' display size and top hardware.
There is the HTC ONE S, that HTC says is "a compact size", but it is 4.3'' display!
Please, could you show me what smartphones you refer to?

Font size is indipendent from display size.
What is different is only the area to contain the stuff.
As example, I find the SGII default look&feel size too big and unaesthetic.

yeah, bigger is better. the resolution is everything for todays mobiles phones
I think better is not really good after is break, 4.0 inch it is the maximum fro me
It depends on the user's hand, head and pocket size. Lol!
e.g. The Incredible Hulk will need at least a 7-inch tablet as a Smartphone.
Tinker Bell can use the iPhone as a big screen HDTV.

i use to feel the same way. i remember the first time i bought my first smart phone it was an iphone. i remember walking into to the store and then walking out saying no way, no way it's just too big. and that was going from a small nextel push to talk phone. to the iphone 3g it was just way bigger it was like a monster compaired to my nextel. so it took me awhile too go back to store (about a month later) i eventually got the iphone 3g. and i remember thinking the whole time as i drove back home... this thing is too big i know i'm not going to like but i gave it a try. the first few days were hard i'm mean the size and the battery life was not what i was accustomed to. but i eventually git used to the size and the bad battery life.
my last iphone was a iphone 4. and my current phone now is a GS2 and now when ever i pick up an iphone it's just way too small i can't go back no way. i am now thining of the getting the note. at this point i have lerned to adapt the newer bigger phones and find myself never looking back to the old 3.5-4.0 days.
guess this guys video explains how i feel now.
http://youtu.be/cl6AHTNef-s
Like someone saldo it allí depends on the need. I heard somebody that those huge pones were made for People with big hands Like basketball and football de playero. I also heard that información japan all Phone were miniture and u can do anything with it.
i dont really like that Trend of bigger and bigger Phones, i mean, 4" is the biggest i would buy, first i had a Nokia N95 its was cool and for that time THE High End Device but it was really thick and i think the screen too small for Internet(2,6"), so i got a Nokia C6-00, bad performance but relativly good screen (3,2") in fact the Displaycable broke and i needed Replacement , now i changed to Sony Xperia P (4") and it fits perfect!
Two Friends of mine owned HTc One X and Galaxy SIII and i had both in my Hand but they are definitly too big by slightly low resolution change...
bigger or just nice
there are many phones just release and releasing soon in the android market.having alot of my time researching for specs of this upcoming phones,i can say that 4.2-4.8 inch display phones will become the norms in the near future.its about individual preference.i still stick to my nexus one.hehe.but have eyes on the s2(not s3 as for me the design is odd)..
I think there is a balance between too big and just right. Having said that, it is a moving scale, because everybody has different needs and uses for the device.
i don't like mini-laptop size any phones........

Apples new IPhone 6 will have a 4 inch display! It's common sense!

I'm not sure if this post is made in satire or not. I'm gonna go with satire, since EVERYTHING rumored about the next iPhones say they'll have a 4.7" and 5.5" screen. What that video fails to address is the fact that most people have two hands. And that even on my Galaxy Light (with a 4" screen, same as the iPhone 5), I prefer to use it two-handed rather than one-handed.
Steve Jobs is dead. He had his vision, and right or wrong, there's no denying his influence. But public opinion doesn't seem to agree with his vision, and that's why Androids with bigass screens are popular, and iPhones are getting Android sized. Small phones are great. Big phones are great. Let the customer decide, not some dead over-romanticized douchebag.
I don't think bigger is better, but 4.0 inch is too small for me.
And what is the sales point of upcoming iPhone?

How can you say that. According to the ad it's common sense
I'm ok with the new Apple iPhone 6 to come out but my opinion is yes bigger is nice maybe even better but is it really what you want holding up to your face if you are not a headphone or blue tooth kind of person ? Also isn't bigger why we have Tablets / Epads for ? I think the new size of the iPhone 6 is as big as anyone should want to hold to their head but like OP (Planterz) says let the people choose what they want.
Just my 2 cents..
ios/iPhone ewwww. so ugly
I have a Nexus 5 right now and it honestly feels small. My next device will have to be 6". I always wanted to give the iPhone a go someday, but man if they keep making dem tiny phones with crappy battery life that day will never come I suppose.
I think it will still be 4-inch, I still use an iPod Touch 4 with a 3.5 inch screen as my main portable device. A larger screen would make it even more expensive and harder to support by developers since they'll need to support many screen sizes.

There's LOTS of evidence to show that 4.7" is a definite reality, but NONE to show that the (imaginary) 5.5" will come to pass.
Let me re-iterate that for those who are not so good at piecing together a general likelihood of something being a reality, due to there being NO LEAKS of ANYTHING 5.5", no part image no nothing...
There IS NOT going to be a 5.5" iPhone 6, not this year at least. Come back here and quote me when the 6 is released, and your hindsight will give you the 50/50 vision you will need to see how blindingly obvious that was, had you snapped out of your idealistic daydreams, and woken up to how to do a little (basic) detective work and generally use some common sense.
My old s3 already feels too tiny. And that's 4.8"....
I am never going below 5.7" again. I love the screen on the S5 but it's too bloody tiny. Reminds me of the old gameboys you needed a magnifying lens to use properly...

Moto X has become too large.

I was just interested in peoples opinion of this. I still have the 2013 Moto X after owning a few Samsung devices; Moto X 2013 has/had its flaws, but it does fit perfectly on the hand. I thought the X series was all about being a 'practical' device, but this no longer seems to be the case. Was I wrong in holding this view?
"practical" is subjective.
People prefer the larger screen size of the phablet and its quite a minority (though vocal) that are complaining about it. The general trend is phablets are bringing in money. People want the larger screen size and as long as the device is shaped well so that it fits well enough into hands and isn't uncomfortable for the majority, then it makes money.
It's kind of funny because I came from a moto x2013 and then went to a nexus 6. I constantly switch between the two because i like the screen size of the nexus 6 but i love the moto features. The new moto x 2015 is the merging of the two that's just about perfect for me.

Its all personal preference and i suppose physical size. There are lots of people who are physically larger than average and can easily hold a phablet in one hand but just dont like the size of them.
Then you have under average sized guys who own phablets even though they cannot comfortably use them....they just like em.
Its all over the place lol. I myself am of average size for a male, 5ft 11 or so and about 200lbs and i i think anything under 5.5 " screen size is worthless and way to small. I wish the X was going to be 6" like my nexus honestly.
Personal preference is all it is with perhaps a bit of practicality thrown in.

I think the note 4 is a great manageable size. I thought the nexus 6 was a little large but not obscene. I've went back to the 2013 x and managed fine with that too. I think Ive realized anything between 4.7 - 5.9 is fine with me as long as the rest of the phone hits the right notes.

I'm with you about anything under 5.5 being worthless. I'm 6'1 285
I'm 6'1" with long fingers, and I hate large phones. So size of the person is not always an indicator of preference.
I want a phone that fits in my front pocket correctly, and in my cup holder in my car when driving. Basically that means about 5.2" max.

And the x style is narrower than nexus 6, so should be perfect. I hope the next nexus is similar dimensions.
Its all personal preference and i prefer the larger screen size.
You people make no sense. There are 5.2" devices out that that got huge bezels and final result is they feel bigger than 5.7" moto.
My take on the larger phone size is that people are using their phones in lieu of a desktop. More portable than a laptop & one device that can do a lot more than several unique stand alone devices. Plus the phone is with me more than my home desktop.
I'd rather see another 5.2" or 5.5" Moto X, but sometimes my current moto x 2014 feels a bit "small" in hand. I guess it's usable screen space that matters.

Obviously no one can be right or wrong on an issue of opinion, but I definitely agree with you. I don't like things in my pockets, so I prefer my phone be as small as possible while still being comfortable to read. Right now I'm of the opinion that 5" is the perfect screen size, but as bezels get smaller, that could change my mind. I think the Nexus 5 and Galaxy S4 are about as big as I can enjoy. That being said, I'll probably be buying a Pure because it is the best phone with an SD card slot. Maybe I'll get used to that mammoth?

This guy knows what up. I hadn't even thought about the cupholder... I always take my phone out and put it there. I hope the X will fit there.
Initially I did think it has become too big. I like the size of my nexus 5. Despite being 6'3 with monkey arms, I have quite stubby fingers and just barely reach all corners of my n5 one-handed.
Doing some quick gsm arena research, I have found that the pure/style is quite similar in size to the g4. They have almost identical width, but the pure is abt 5 mm taller. The thickness is misleading because it is curved.
Pending battery life reviews, this might be my next phone
I think someone stated it already. Bezel size of older phones make it almost the same size. I would not consider this phablet size. http://www.gizmag.com/moto-x-style-pure-edition-vs-2014-moto-x-comparison/38730/ . Very minimal size difference. Curvature makes it seem thinker. http://www.gizmag.com/galaxy-s6-vs-moto-x-pure-edition-comparison/38737/ again its 10mm longer but still same width than popular Samsung S6 (why popular I don't know). So Phablet its not in my opinion. So with that if you think its to big, please also avoid whoppers in the future.

I know there are grey areas, but IMO, 3"x6" or greater = phablet. There is about a quarter inch different in width between the X and the S6, which is not insignificant. It is also 60% thicker* and 25% heavier. I still like the stock android option and SD card, so I'll be getting one, but if the S6 had an SD card, I'd be buying one of those and rooting.
*yes, I know it is curved, but it will still feel thick and won't fit in my cell phone mount for my car (wife's Nexus 6 fit width-wise, but was too deep). I don't usually use the mount, but it's nice when I'm using it for navigation.
I have read through these comments and honestly, I am surprised by what people are saying here... there is an overwhelming trend prefering 5" and 5" + phones! Not what I was expecting.

Its funny because last year I was put off the Nexus 6 because of its size. Somehow this year I want the Moto X Style which is roughly the same size yet I'm not put off by its size at all. I guess all phones are going this way and bit by bit I have just accepted it.

I'm 6'1" with long fingers, and I hate large phones. So size of the person is not always an indicator of preference.
I want a phone that fits in my front pocket correctly, and in my cup holder in my car when driving. Basically that means about 5.2" max.

My Nexus 6 fits in my cup holder, and I doubt it's larger than normal (2008 Avalanche). It also fits in my pockets. How can a larger phone not properly fit, I cannot imagine how.

Why are there no small smartphones anymore?

And when I say SMALL I really mean that because anything above 11.5 cm to 12 cm seems medium to me and anything above that seems plain big or giant like 14 or 15 cm phone. Don't they have the technology to build a great small 4 inch screen smartphone with decent front and rear cameras and a smooth android version? They do! Then why not give us such phones because there are enough people who would like decent sized screens and small and great smartphones! -- So, WHY are there no small smartphones anymore?
I don't know, it look like these days, small is associated with cheap and under-performing. I know, it's a false assumption but, it seem that people associate a smaller phone with the small device they had 3-4 years ago. I know, I have been guilty of this too. When I see a small phone, it's hard for me to avoid associating it with my first phone (Samsung Galaxy Ace), it was small and it was crappy. Hardware was simply not up to the task and Gingerbread was ugly. Now, in 2015 it would be possible to install high performing hardware on a small screen because technology has advanced, I know.

my guess, not enough demand. im guessing the average desired size is around 5-5 1/4" right now. manufacturers will always move in the direction of the majority of their customers wants, or they will loose customers.

I agree with the trend, but I think there would be enough demand for 4 inch screens packed in a less than 12 cm phone with great specs. Make it with gorilla glass, IP65 and IP68 resistant, at least 5MP front and 16MP rear cameras with all available enhancements, removable 2500+ mAh battery (so the talk time or using apps for many hours through the day won't be an issue), put in a smooth android to work on a quad core platform (& +dual sim).
Then make it a limited edition (say 100,000 devices) that sells internationally. And DON'T MAKE IT CHEAP!
Say sell it for £500 a piece. See if it sells, and HOW FAST it sells. I bet the batch would be sold pretty fast!!!
If a success, then add something in the specs and make a very similar variant to continue and feed the demand.
I am the only one who would LOVE such a phone? If there are others too, then post, let's make our voices heard!
Sorry to dig out an old thread, but the situation hasn't changed yet
I've been searching for a while now for a more or less up-to-date (max 2-3 years old) compact phone. I totally agree with @PlayHunter, I know that the trend is to go 5 inch +, but I really like to have a small phone in my pocket and I've already been wondering if I'm the only one
Even with my old Sony Xperia Mini (yes the very old one ),

but I really liked it for being Jeans-friendly And 3 of my friends bought it just because of the same reason after seeing it.
Sure, there are the Sony Z5/X/XZ Compact, but those are already bigger than my 5" Nexus 5.
I liked the size of the Z1 Compact and the iPhone 4. I think a phone in this size, with small bezels, a 720p screen and mid-to-high range hardware would attract many people.
The problem is obvious:

A friend of mine once found a Chinese manufacturer, where you could configurate a phone as you wish (he got a 6" with TV Receiver, extra Battery and CyanogenOS) for ~€200, they were also making small ones. At the time he told me, the company has been bought by Lenovo and shut down... So here I was, thinking what to do if my (already too big ) Nexus 5 goes dark one day.
I ended up being in contact with a custom Android device manufacturer, who could produce our dream phone, for a reasonable price, with a minimum quantity of 5000 devices. If we could find enough people interested in this, we could make it happen ourselves
