To get one or not to get one? (DINC user) - Thunderbolt General

I currently have a Droid Incredible. I've went from a Droid 2 to a Droid X to a Droid Incredible. I love being able to switch between roms and having many kernels to pick from. MIUI and CM being my two favorites, but recently my phone has been acting up, speaker crackling, bluetooth i believe took a crap, and it's just not as it used to be, so I'm considering getting something else.
I also have the 3g unlimited data plan and was told by verizon the 4g phone will work fine with my current plan as it has but with 4g.
Currently eyeing:
1. Thunderbolt
2. Incredible 2
3. Bionic
All will be bought used as I'm not shelling out vast amounts of cash to verizon for a "new" phone. (Yes i could wait for Razr or galaxy but that's 600 if not more we are talking about, and I'm not extending my contract for now)

Bolt has better development of the 3
If I helped please use the thank you button and donate a free account to my dropbox http://db.tt/uDc7iw7x

Bionic is the fastest(stock), but yeah.. the Thunderbolt has the best support and largest selection of roms, kernals, etc... not to mention that the screen on the Bionic isn't quite as good as the Thunderbolt's. you can also overclock the Thunderbolt up to 1.9 jigga hertz if you so desire.

WiFi tether works great for me

I went from an Incredible to a Thunderbolt. I bought it off of Swappa. Since I used Titanium Backup + Dropbox for my apps, the switch wasn't too painful. Overall the change wasn't too bad. The one thing for me is I'm still having trouble finding "manageable" battery life on the Thunderbolt. Essentially, FOR ME no matter what I do, the battery life of the Thunderbolt is like a stock rom on the Incredible.
On my Incredible running Cyanogen 7.1.0 with Chad's 8/15 Incredikernel I was able to keep wi-fi on (for location), have three mail accounts sync (one push and two every hour), and have the app my6Sense update my feeds as a widget, at CPU speeds of 245-1075mhz with about 10-12 hours of running time and about 2-2.5 hours of screen on time. I set the auto backlight in the CM settings to never go above 200 with 7 total brightness levels. In addition I have one of those HTCexpress.com batteries in my phone.
With the Thunderbolt I haven't gotten close to 12 hours yet. I've used the latest 906 radios (as someone who didn't get the phone when it launched trying to understand the difference between the terms MR2 and MR3 for radios is difficult) and have tried a few different kernels (Lean, Slayer, DreamKerel, and Tiamat) all have been a bit different but none have really helped me stretch my battery life to that mirroring the Incredible. The cool thing is if you've used Chad's Incredikernel and also downloaded IncrediControl the control app works on Lean kernel (only one I tried). I've undervolted the Lean kernel by ~100mv (when using extreme battery saver in speedtweak.sh) and overclocked it to 1.2ghz at the same time. It seemed like the phone cannot make it past 6 hours (syncing the same email accounts and wi-fi on and my6sense) with 4g on and using ProTekk's CyanogenMod #16 build (link). I managed to get 3 hours of screen on time using the Thunderbolt but it didn't matter much since it still dies in ~6-7 hours even with less usage (as measured by screen on time). I also set the auto backlight again using the CM7 level settings. I played around with turning off 4g and seeing if that improved battery life but I didn't put much effort into it so I can't say definitively. I'm using the apps System Panel and Spare Parts to monitor my apps for any rogue tasks and nothing seems out of line in terms of CPU and Partial wake usage, respectively.
I bought two 1700mah HTCExpress batteries (link) for the Thunderbolt off Amazon but they wouldn't charge past 93% so I sent them back in exchange for different ones (I'm still waiting for the originals to make their way back). I tried bump charging them but to no avail. Fortunately, from what I've seen using the app CurrentWidget (link) and the regular battery it doesn't look like the Thunderbolt, overall, needs to be bump charged nearly as much (if at all) as the Incredible -- except for the first charge after installing a new kernel and battery stats are wiped. Perhaps when the return batteries arrive I'll have a bit more juice.
For now I'm running the stock Gingerbread 605.5 ROM, debloated and rooted (link) This ROM is ok and one thing that's great is the camera and camcorder are much better than CM7. The built-in DLNA local-network streaming support is welcome when I'm at home and want to watch files on my PC. On the same token, the combination of Dice Player and UPnPlay are a similar combo for CM7. Battery life on this ROM is a little stronger at around 6.5-7 hours, with maybe 1-1.5 hours of screen on time.
As for WiFi tether, I'm using the 3.1 beta app 6 app with a device profile setting of NexusOne, a Netd setup-method, and have the routing fix enabled to get tethering working on my Thunderbolt.
For me, this list of kernels and ROMs was super helpful (link). Also RootzWiki was just as useful as XDA in seeing what's new for the Thunderbolt. Personally I'm looking forward to what can be done with the new kernel source that HTC just released. Rooting was a breeze using the Revolutionary tool found in the first link from this thread (link).
Lastly, 4G is fast! now I can watch HBO Go and not have to worry about getting an audio-only stream. WatchESPN still stutters a bit, but Spots Center is there as well. If it's 4g you're looking for I'd go with the Thunderbolt, though I hear the Incredible 2 has great battery life for a 3G phone.

damn Solar... even though that post wasn't for me, I'm giving you a "Thanks" just for taking the time to write all that.

Thanks! Just trying to share what I've learned about my phone so far.

I was in your shoes last week, I had a Dinc, but wanted 4G. I was actually set on the bionic but decided to give it a couple of days before I bought one (used) to see if I could get a better price. While I was looking for a bionic, I came across some TB's and ended up buying one from a guy on CL that had it for 2 weeks. I paid $170 for the phone, extended battery, car charger, case, and the 32gb micro sd that came with it (oh yeah, no ****ty contract either). I wasn't even coming close to that number with the bionic. I use the internet on my phone for work and the 4G speeds blow 3G out of the water in my area, I couldn't believe how fast downloads were! It was also an easy transition from the Dinc, rooting the TB and flashing was just as simple as my old phone.
Solar's post hit the nail on the head though, battery can go fast, but I can make mine last if I know I wont be around a charger for a while. Bottom line is, for me the TB's pros far outweigh any cons it has. I couldn't be happier with what I paid for.

I picked up the t-bolt a few days ago. Love it so far

It's gonna be hard to move on from my bolt.

Battery stats for those on custom ROMs

Im trying to convince myself to get the Inspire and sell my atrix.
The last thing that is making me reluctant is the battery. I consitantly get between 30 and 40 hours between charges on my atrix with 3 to 4 hours of screen time. I know i wont get that with an Inspire, but im wondering what kind of stats people are seeing who are running custom ROMs. With my capitvate i saw a nearly DOUBLE battery life effect between stock and a custom rom. im hoping there are similar results on the inspire.
for those on custom roms, im looking to see how many hours you get between charges. ideally, how many hours between charges, with how many hours of screen time, wifi, blue tooth, etc. and im also interested in seeing the battery life of those who are OC/UV.
Someones gotta have info for me!

Inspire battery usage....sucks!
If your main concern is BATTERY USAGE, then DO NOT get an Inspire.
No matter what ROM or other MODS made to an Ispire, it is accepted by all that have one, that the Inspire has very low battery uptime, especially when compared to other platforms.
Stay with your ATRIX for long battery usage and uptime. - Glenn
I just swapped my Atrix for the Inspire this past Sunday, and i can tell you first hand you're not gonna get the same battery results you did with the Atrix. Personally, I don't need to get 20-40 hours of battery life from a phone. Don't get me wrong, it is nice, but I don't need it. I just want to get at least 8 hours (while I'm at work) from a battery and I'm fine. However, I do have my charger with me just in case and i also have a car charger.
I rooted my Inspire Sunday night and flashed the stock rooted rom and couldn't be happier. I got about 13 hours out of the battery yesterday while I was at work and I used it under normal circumstances..calling, texts and lots of fb checking etc. Oh, and I didn't have any overclocking, underclocking, themes or nothing...just the rooted the stock rom.
The inspire is a lot more smooth also when compared to the Atrix. I was all for the Atrix last week. But after actually having the Inspire....its the Inspire FTW!
Its not my main concern. Just the Las thing I'm considering. A lot if other things about the inspire are appealing. Just looking for round about numbers.
Can I get 12 hours out of itwith 2 to 3 hours of screen time? That might be enough for me........If can get more than that, then I would def be sold.
Of course all this would be expected only when all aetttings on phone for Max bat life applied

Speak for yourself. My Inspire lasts me the day with a ton of juice left over. I'm not a super heavy user, but I will have sometimes 60-70% battery life when I go to bed on light use days. On heavier use days I'm still at 30-40% when I go to bed. Unless you are watching youtube videos or something for hours on end, battery life is fine I think.
To extend battery life I adjusted my screen brightness back to 30% with no auto adjust, seemed to help battery life quite a bit and did not make much difference in how the screen looked. Today I am trying auto brightness, but using power saver to switch to lower screen brightness when the battery hits 40%--I'm at 7 hours and the battery is still at 70%. Honestly, I don't think a person could even watch a movie on a flight, for example, the screen draw on the battery is that bad. If I keep the phone, I will have to get another battery.
I get 22-24 hours with light average use, about 14 hours of moderate use. CM7, nothing special done or flashed.

I was replying to the OP's original statment regarding his Atrix battery time in reference to the Insire's battery time:
OP said......The last thing that is making me reluctant is the battery. I consitantly get between 30 and 40 hours between charges on my atrix with 3 to 4 hours of screen time.
Even with your light usage, I am doubtful that you get anywhere close to the OP's "30 and 40 hours between charges on my atrix with 3 to 4 hours of screen time". - Glenn
well i guess i will just find out.
impulse buyer here. immediatly ran out and purchased an inspire after making this thread.
You're going to LOVE the inspire (even with the lower battery time). I have no doubt you will be throwing rocks at ATRIX users in no time!! - Glenn
Lol ur right so far. Smooth, fast, solid. Just the smoothness and screen size is enough to win me over

My results are based on percentage of time versus overall time, based on an average 8h work day.
Stock rom:
at the end of 8h I had an average of 55% left
Revolution HD 4 Beta 2:
at the end of 8h I had an average of 35% left
Stock rom rooted and bloat removed, HSPDA enabled:
only have one data point and it looks good so far. I had 75% left with the same average use as the other roms above. Why this one is so much better I don't know.
Also the stock rom came with the stock Radio 06.04.06_M but with the root downgrade and then custom rom to Rev HD4 B2 I had to upgrade the Radio to one that was suggested, which is 06.03.24_M2.
Also, one thing that I noted which was also seen on my Nexus One is that when I use the GPS my car charger is not able to keep up and I will loose battery % as I drive.
All in all I am very happy with this move from the Captivate. Many see it as a lateral move, but if you ever where in the need for the GPS this is definatey an upgrade since the GPS on the Inspire is spot on.
^^^^^^
thats the kind of info i was looking for. appreciate it.
my first run with the inspire resulted in 14 hours since last charge (down to 15%) with nearly 3 hours of screen on time.
granted i adjusted every possible thing to be less battery consuming, and one hour of that screen time was laying in bed in the dark with the screen on the lowest brightness setting.
i think i may be able to work with this.

yeah i am close to an impulse buy on the inspire too, just because its such a great price. even full price at 399 is insanely cheap when most phones are 550 full price.

the battery does suck. but everything else on the phone is so great, that i still am happy i got it
I am a pretty hardcore user and I never have any issues with battery at all. I believe a lot of these battery issues that people have are due to flashing with a low battery, which causes the battery's "memory" to get messed up. If people flashed with a full battery, or did the battery reset procedure after flashing and charging, we would stop hearing about all the horrible battery issues. User error, not an issue with the phone. If it was a phone issue, I would absolutely be experiencing the problem as well.
There are also bigger, better, higher capacity batteries up to 3500 ma/h if you REALLY need more battery time.

alright so i had a lot of issues with getting great battery life out of the phone. i'm only writing this to help people that are having similar issues. obvious, relative to teh atrix (with a ridiculously larger battery), the life is NOT that great. BUT i've gotten 24+ hours on teh phone with certain tweaks.
first off, rooting is a pain in the ass, but a necessity for any power user. My HSUPA speeds are often higher then the HSDPA speeds...and I can tether too! Anyways most important part of tihs is underclocking. I have my screen set to underclock to 3xx Mhz with screen off. I can't even tell the difference between when it is underclocked or not. I don't OC since for whatever reason I don't see the option to and don't care to force it.
I also set my brightness to 20% or less when i'm indoors, which is usually where i am. I also turn off the radios when i'm not using them, or wifi when i'm in range (i think its better than hspa), and sometimes autosync too (there are widgets for this). i also disabled facebook live feed syncing and set it to update when i open the app, and to sync contacts and htc sync and other useless stuff to once a day.
if you want something to turn off your radios when your screen is off, check otu juice defender. if you want to track your battery over time, try juice plotter. with the way i ahve it setup now, if i leave the screen off for 10 minutes. the battery drops 1% or less PER HOUR. One night, it finished charging at midnight so i took it off, and didn't put it back on a charger 1 am the next night with 10-15% left.
anyways, i hope this helps at least some new inspire owners. good luck with rooting if you haven't yet, it took me 4 hours, but itw as COMPLETELY worth it

Got another data point for the stock rom.
This time after the 8h my battery was at 55%, however I spend considerable time in a clean room were I have no signal at all. My other phones would usually drain much quicker in there and I believe it's because it's seeking a cell signal all the time.
So far I am very happy with the rooted stock rom, only wished it had some of the Gingerbread features.
I have consistently gotten about 9 hours usage, with 1.5 - 2 hours screen time, and left work with 40 - 60% battery. I make no effort to reduce usage, as nothing even comes close to the screens usage, except I do leave off gps when not in use. This is a general average, and I have noticed little difference between stock and 2 different versions of Android revolution, with different flashed radios. (roms always flashed at full battery) and overclocked to 1.2 with ondemand set. Overall I can say this battery is not great, but the rest of the phone is well worth it. I had the atrix for 2 weeks, and although the atrix got better benchmark scores, it was way less smooth, and a lot of market apps don't work on it, like flashlights, live wallpapers that don't support the screen, etc.
I am very glad my atrix's touchscreen failed, because if it didn't, I probably would have never tried the inspire, and I am much happier with the inspire.

My take as a new Thunderbolt owner

Look, this may not be a 28nm quad core phone with a 4.5" IPS 720p display, but we're getting there.
This is the best LTE phone still. Samsung has the AMOLED, but HTC gave this one the dual radio chipset and 4 antenna to give you the best reception, and since this phone is all about LTE, that's what makes it the best.
Battery life is the boon of LTE. You can get 3 hours of mobile hotspot if you're serious, but take today for example. Been at work for 4 hours with wifi on, and my battery still hasn't hit 80%.
Why is it I see everyone complain about the TB battery life?

Because its easy to drain. The phone has a smaller than average battery and the 4G tech is power hungry.
I've had the phone since release, and I'm always testing tweaks to improve the battery life. This phone is a beast, so it can tear through the stock battery, depending on your use. I only have experience with the TB on LTE though, so I'm not sure how it is for the Charge. I wouldn't trade the TB for anything else though.
been using the phone for about a week and battery life really depends on how its used. for example, on days im constantly texting and using apps, the battery lasts me only half a day. but yesterday i was heading into nyc and needed the phone to last me the whole day and once i limited my usage of it, it did last. the phone doesnt drain battery very fast unless its under intense usage.

The problem with that statement is we shouldn't be forced to limit our phone use to make it through a day. I am not advocating heavy usage...2 days worth of battery etc, but under normal daily conditions the battery should make it through a day...meaning a combination of all the general things done on a smartphone, and then kinda averaged out to make it thorugh 10 or 12 hours.
I know all the arguments about it all ways...all I am saying is a smartphone should make it through a normal day usage...almost as a standard.
I am still torn on the phone...but I have trouble making decisions for myself...so no suprise to me there...I like some of the features of the phone, but really am just blah on it. The power button is under sensitive, the volume buttons overly sensitive and IMO in the wrong spot...dislike the feel of it in my hand *(had it since Tuesday).
The only appealing factor to me is the fact that AOSP has made it (and HTC's recent annoucement regarding unlocked bootloaders...makes me want to buy into the cause....and is what is deterring me from other LTE phones (I dont know why I give it so much thought we won't have LTE here til sometime before December (hopefully)...I just was ready for an upgrade, figured why not get at least unlimited LTE til sometime in 2013 (at the least..)
I am leaning heavily on bring this back for the charge...or waiting til the bionic....though AOSP is a very important factor for me in choosing a phone
I haven't had my Thunderbolt for long, but I'm enjoying it so far. I've liked HTC phones since my days with WinMo, and the TB is an evolutionary, not revolutionary, step up from the Incredible that I replaced. Digging the larger screen and LTE is fast in my area (Pittsburgh). I think it has a better feel than the Incredible, too. I didn't mind the tiered back, but it felt mostly plasticky. The TB definitely seems to be made out of higher-quality materials.
Battery life is it's weakness, though, but it's not a deal breaker. I can go from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed with it, for the most part (although I was able to go 2 days on a charge with the Incredible). I don't think I'm a particularly heavy user, though... an hour of talking, maybe a dozen texts, an hour on the internet, and sporadic checking of my email or Twitter. I keep my brightness set to about 30%, GPS and Bluetooth are off, all vibration is off, Twitter and email are set to update manually. Weather updates every three hours, contacts whenever.
So far I really like my TB. Battery life isn't the greatest but there are people working on that.
We weren't supposed to get 4G until Dec also but it showed up a few days ago.

Is not the phone in TB pretty crappy? It least on mine I get a ton of static when talking on the phone, and the volume is often either too loud or too soft, as if the range for volume control is not wide enough. It feels like my old clamshell from 3 years ago sounded much better.

I wouldn't say it's crappy. I'm not getting static or anything on it. But it does sound a little tinnier than my Incredible did.

This is the primary reason I hate my TB. I use Exchange and Gmail push mail and I have done everything I could to reduce battery life, incl. limiting background data like weather, but my phone still only last 5 hours under normal usage. My old iPhone 4, with the same usage, will last another 3 hors at the minimum.

Wow, 5 hours? That's crazy.
I use my phone to stream music for about 1 - 3 hours a day, sync google calendar, contacts, and gmail, and weather widget and I can get about 20 hours. If I start playing games or make long phone calls, that definitely makes a difference. But I can easily get 20 hours with moderate usage.
Have you thought or rooting and running a different ROM/kernel? I'm running Tesla Coil with leankernel and I love it!
edit: I also leave wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on all day. Wifi is set to sleep after 15 minutes. I'm also in a 4G area.
Well... that is the problem. I'm trying to use my TB professionally. I use it to join conf calls, always with my bluetooth headset, check and reply company emails, etc.
It just doesn't cut it. I always have to recharge it mid day. I never had to do the same with my BlackBerry Curve or Tmobile G2, specially the G2.
Problem is not always I have the option to recharge. And just the fact that I have to pay attention and monitor battery level is not good.
I need a phone that I can use A LOT for email (a lot!!!) and calls, several calls per day, with bluetooth. The TB is not this phone.
I've had mine sine thursday and the battery sucks. It reminds me of the original droid which I ultimately had to buy the Seido extended battery for to get the use I wanted out of it.
If you leave it in 3g it will go all day. On Friday my wife and I went looking at houses (we're shopping to buy) using my wifi xoom to do research while accessing data through the mobile hotspot. We drove around for about 4 hours and the TBolt still had 50%charge when I got home and I still had power when I put it on charge at bedtime. This was on 3g though.
Yesterday we did the same thing but I left 4G on. We drove off at about 2:00PM with a 90% charge on the phone. By 3:15 it was down to 39%. That's ridiculous, and the phone was crazy hot too.

Maybe, but it appears to have a pretty good signal. I haven't been watching that cloely but when I have looked it hasn't had below two bars. They claim the whole city is well covered and quite a bit of the countryside around it. Jacksonville Fl. may not have the *most* in population but it is the *biggest* city in the state.
The TB is Verizon's first CDMA+LTE phone & has its shortcomings, just like any other 1st-gen technology. The battery is only 1400mah, so don't expect it to last as long as 3G-only phones with similar battery size. You can extend battery life by disabling nonessential apps/services & turning off 4G when you don't need it. You can also flash a custom rom & battery sipping kernel, but a lot of ppl are not willing to go that far, especially with the recent bricking issues. The best way to ensure you have enough juice w/o recharging is to buy an extra battery & charger. You can get both from ebay for less than $20. Then you won't have to gimp your TB just to make it through the day

But, coming off at&t iPhone I immediately noticed that t-bolt did not sound as good, and this he first time ever I noticed a difference in call sound when switching phones, so got a bit upsetting I guess. By now I am used to it and sounds ok to me.

When you realize that this phone is more powerful than the computer I took to college and it's running on a battery the size of a saltine cracker, it's only logical that it won't last all day if you're using it nonstop.
Older phones seemed to last forever because all it did was make calls and the occasional text. I had the original enV and if I sat around using AIM and playing what few games were available the battery drained like my bank account at a strip club. Android phones? Fugeddaboutit. We're talking, texting, streaming, listening, WiFi hotspotting, playing, and recording all day long and DON'T think we'll need a power boost? Puh-lease.
Buy a spare battery, keep a charger handy, or just use it more conservatively.

[Q] Cyanogenmod 2.3.4 For Droid Charge

So I just upgraded to a Droid Charge after owning an HTC HERO running Cyanogenmod 7 2.3.4 for a while and as happy as I am with my Droid I hate to say it but I miss my HERO. Anyone else here anxious to see them support this device? I don't know about you guys but I can't wait to be running gingerbread on this bad boy and hope we get some kind of support from the guys at Cyanogenmod! Running froyo on such a nice device these days has got to be a crime! I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this guys.

That'd be nice, but I don't think they have any SGS support for any phones yet.

No, all the 1st generation GSM models are officially supported.
The answer: don't look to the core Cyanogen folks; they're useless with Samsung stuff. Meanwhile the guys who ported to SGS in the first place are now working on SGS2, though they've also helped recently on the Fascinate port. When SAMOLED+ drivers, Verizon CDMA, and LTE support get sorted out on other platforms (SGS2, Fascinate, and Thunderbolt respectively), maybe... But not very soon.
The LTE radios seem to be a hassle to port; there's a few building CM7 for the Thunderbolt, and they're still only Alpha, with the following as known issues: "**Known Issues**
-Possible Data/Voice bugs and issues.
-Video Record mic broken
-gps slow to get locks"
Data/Voice bugs? Deal killer for me, without reliable data/voice you've got nothing better than an iPod touch. LOL.
Can't wait for them to nail it down though; or maybe not...Sense 3 is pretty slick.

Yeah, that's a problem with being on Verizon; you cut down the developer community by a significant portion - not only do you lose all the GSM owners (AT&T/TMo), but you lose all the Europeans as well. Until CM7 finally came out for the SGS i9000, the best ROMs for it, in my opinion, were all from Europe.

The thunderbolt has a CM7 Port already, i was running it when i had the thunderbolt. I am really getting tired of the DROID CHARGE. mine can't last 7 hours on damn standby with radios turned off. I may be going back to best buy to switch back to the thunderbolt.

You're doing something wrong if you can't make it 7 hours in standby with the radios off. I loose 2% battery AT MOST with my phone in airplane mode when sleeping.

lte does/has worked in the bolt cm7 builds for awhile...the only major issue with data is the wifi/lte handoff...you have to screw around with network settings to get it back
wifi to 3g/1x is fine apparently

You've got issues, like a bad phone or battery. Some combination of what you've done should have fixed that! I'd go back to stock and bring it in for replacement.
Yea I had the same issues at first. I used to have it fully charged and I would unplug it right before I'd go to sleep at night and I would wake up to my phone being at like 5% battery left and that was with it in airplane mode with location services and 4g turned off. I swapped it out for a new one and haven't had a single issue with battery life. Fyi these phones are mean to get up to 9 days of standby time so if you guys can't get through one night I highly recommend returning it back for a new one because I've seen scattered complaints here and there about batter issue but nothing wide spread. Its quite common that a small percentage of electronics ship with some kind of defect and that could be the issue.
The main this is having 3g/4g off. It will double your battery life. First week I've had mobile data on all day long and the battery would last about 12-14 hours of moderate usage. Now I switch to Wi-fi at home and work and it lasts me 2 days of moderate to heavy usage. Those 4g radios love to drain your battery.

i noticed the same as well.
when i left my phone on 3G (CDMA mode), i thought my phone battery was never going to die. I was easily able to clear 24HRs of use and there was still plenty of juice left in the battery (like 40%). after 28hrs, i then decided to charge the phone, but wow.
however, compared to being on 4G/LTE mode, the battery drains at a more "realistic" pace. after a full 10hr work day, my battery is usually anywhere from 50-60%. and then i have that left over for the rest of the night.
so, at work, i leave my phone on CDMA/3G mode and then after work, i switch it to LTE mode. this works great for me.

I myself have seen upwards to 48 hours of moderate use since I exchanged my handset for a new one. My only gripe is touch whiz garbage. I really want to root my droid and put a decent ROM on it but I really don't want to put froyo back on my device. I feel like if I'm going to be rooting to upgrade my device then I should be putting gingerbread on it. Touchwhiz is soo terrible, I'm sometimes waiting to use my handset for anywhere 5-10 seconds on wake and I really don't have much on the handset other than games but they are all installed on my memory card. On another note...I'm seeing CM7 on galaxy s 4g already...how much more different is the galaxcy s 4g from the droid charge that a ROM can't be built from it already? I'm just curious...I have zero developer experience when it comes to that stuff.

Gsm sgs phones have gingerbread and in many cars gb source...plus 10x the amount of folks working on it and they can collaborate much easier...also no one who has much aosp building experience has a charge

Searching for Service (aka why I'm ditching my Charge)

So I have two Samsung Droid Charges on my account.
One of them is completely stock, very minimal apps because it is a work phone and has to comply with provisioning standards for my company.
One is my personal phone, which I have rooted and have used various versions of Gummy and Humble, currently running Gummy 2.0 with the EP1Q radio.
While I absolutely love the screen and form-factor of this phone (even the hardware buttons), it seems to have a fatal flaw that I cannot abide. Verizon and Samsung both seem to be oblivious to the issue, but I have experienced it on both phones in several major markets (Atlanta, Charlotte, Norfolk, Richmond, etc).
Occasionally, my phone will simply lose all signal. It will display a 4G/3G/1x icon depending on my coverage area, but the bars will be empty with an "X" and I am unable to make phone calls or send text messages.
At other times, the data connection will simply disappear for no reason, even when I have solid coverage. There are areas where I know I have good service (my office, my home) and I simply lose data for no reason.
Each of these issues occurs randomly as I will have one phone sitting next to the other with signal or data, while the other one does not have it.
Sometimes switching airplane mode on/off will work, but usually I end up having to reboot the phone.
I am posting this to see if there are others experiencing these same issues because Verizon is giving me some push back, insisting that I go through the replacement process (receive a refurb Charge), despite the fact that one of the phones is already a replacement and one was a retail unit off the shelf, indicating the issue is - if not widespread - certainly not isolated.
If there are more people notifying Verizon, they may make it easier for those of us who experience these issues and cannot wait for a software update for which Samsung is notoriously slow at releasing.
(Side Note: The issue seems to be way worse in 3G coverage areas, but it also happens in 4G areas.)
its a known bug with the modems a lot of people have data drop problems. hopefully when GB official is released it will have a better modem
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
We would've had GB a LONG time ago if Sammy wasn't fiddling around with the stupid Galaxy S2. They neglect every other phone on their lineup just because the Galaxy S2 sold so well.
I had 'spotty coverage' with my Charge with some of the older ROMs, however, since I have been on EP1Q (Stock debloated) I have had so few issues that I am perfectly happy to use the ROM as my daily driver.
The radio is fantastic as are my DL speeds. Auto brightness works again as well as the hardware key backlights. The best part of the ROM is the absolutely fantastic battery life! I take my phone off the charger at about 7am every morning and still have 50% left on the battery after almost 15 hours. Throughout that time, I send and recieve alot of email and text messages, make several short calls to colleagues and of course there is the innevitable round of Angry Birds while on the can.
All in all, I love this device!!!

It happens to all of us. Go try getting a new SIM.

I had the problem with my Thunderbolt I bought on the first day fought with version constantly they replaced 4 of them before they sent me this charge, and guess what same issues. I am not a expert but I believe it's the network. Lte has problems and Verizon isn't saying anything for fear of looking bad. They have invested their future in it but there are issues and holding signal is one of them. Battery life is another that has to improve Apple can't release a phone until this is worked out unlike android you can't pop another battery in after 6 hours. BTW 3g had the same issues in the beginning

I was having the same problem as you. Would go from 3g to 1x to nothing. Sometimes it would return in a few seconds sometime i would have to toggle data on/off/on or airplane mode and sometimes it would take a full rebot to fix the problem. I also would lose voice too but didnt happen no where near as often.
Ive had the problems from day one on stock non rooted EE4 and all the rooted roms ive ran. I didnt want to replace my phone with a recert phone so i got the verizon tech to just replace my sim card. Also updated my modem to the newest one the day after i got the new sim card.
Ive been running the new GC 2.0 FE for almost a week, along with a new Sim card and updated modems and have yet to lose voice or data at all.
As another suggested try getting verizon to replace your sim and/or reflash the newest modem. Hope that helps you it did for me.
give the EP1Q modem a try, my signal has improved immensely in the few crappy areas around here
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'm already on my second SIM card and I've experienced the issue on both my stock Charge and my Charge that has been on Gingerbread (currently GC 2.0) and has the EP1Q radio.
I'm just going to head up to VZW next week, show them the threads and hopefully have one of the phones flip out while I'm there and not leave until they either offer a lateral replacement or give me a real time frame for a software fix.

Some of my friends have iPhones too (the dumb ones ) and the only thing im jealous of is the damn battery life. It has a 1420mah battery and easily lasts twice as long as an android phone. The iPod Touch (i happen to have a 3rd gen from before i got an android phone) lasts for a whole week with a 950 mah battery. i want you to get that galaxy player wifi and try getting that thing to last a whole week. I know that there are much more proccesses running in android and real multitasking (not the **** apple feeds to there customers on a white pretty boxed platter) but still, thats how they get that battery life, by limiting functionality. I am not pro apple or completely anti-apple, more pro android and google , but one thing apple has got in the bag is battery life.
An Android device can run just as long if not longer than an iPhone, it simply depends on usage. I'm pretty sure the way Android handles multitasking compared to iOS and push notifications play a role, too.
Regardless, my Nook Color can idle for a couple of weeks with a custom Froyo ROM and kernel. My Droid Charge has lasted me over a day with moderate usage, easily. With heavy use, I get 12-16 hours pretty easily. If I turn off data completely and only use my phone for texting and voice calls, the phone lasts two days, no problem.
Usage is key, and is often misunderstood and judged improperly/subjectively.
But at the end of the day. My droid charge is out of battery and my girls iphone is at 70 percent. I remember reading somewhere that apple has special patented battery technology too. Android needs some special battery technology. I will gladly pay more for a better product.

It's because the iPhone doesn't have that obnoxious hog we call the LTE radio. If you set your phone to CDMA(it disables 4g) you can effectively double your battery life. I disable mine if I'm going somewhere and I know I won't be back in 10+ hours. Or if I'm going somewhere that doesn't have 4g, the battery life with 3g only is CRAZY.

You fail to describe how you and your "girl" use the phone. My money says that you use your phone more heavily than she does. As another poster mentioned, how you use the phone and what apps you are running make a big difference. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the results were quite a bit different if ya'll switched phones for a day, but continued using them the way you would normally use your phones.
You can't compare your gfs iphone to your Charge if you're using the LTE modem. Completely different animals. Once iphones have lte, then you can compare away.
Besides I get incredible battery life from my Charge. I can easily last 20 hrs.
Back to topic however, yes I too have problems with connectivity regardless of Roms or modems I've flashed. If I had to guess, I would say its a network issue with LTE phones... anybody know if the Revolution has similar problems? I believe the TBolt does as someone mentioned earlier, but nobody seems to talk about the Revolution.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Well just to update, I had a pretty serious situation that was caused by this issue. Verizon is unable to provide a firm timeline for an update and won't even confirm that any forthcoming updates will resolve the issue (which they have not yet officially recognized).
That said, the situation I encountered was significant enough that they are issuing a credit toward my bill and the GM of my local corporate store is working on having my phones replaced.
As much as I absolutely love this phone (as one user said in another thread, SAMOLED+ is like the heroin of phone displays), having a phone that is unreliable in important or emergency situations is just absolutely not acceptable to me.
If they do allow me to change phones, I will do my best to move to another 4G phone (not the tbolt obviously) and I will report back on whether or not it appears to be a network issue.
You will find most of your problems will follow you from one 4g phone to another. There are already a few grumblings in the bionic forums radio staying locked on and battery and that is a huge battery

I don't think it's necessarily a DC problem. Here lately my fascinate has been getting 1x locks and my DC has been doing that too. Maybe it's a network issue?

Battery Life?

I was wondering what kind of battery life everyone is getting. I am down to 35 percent and I have only been off the charger for 6 hours. I sent maybe 10 texts checked facebook twice and played cut the rope for 10 minutes.
I unlocked the phone using ACE hack kit and I am not running the CM nightly that I found here: http://iloveabath.co.uk/CM7-Unofficial/ plus the inspiremod 5.0 patch. Also I cant figure out how to get to fastboot to figure out what radio I am running. Im running on T-Mobile in the DC area. I just got the Inspire so any tips and tricks I might not know about would be great.
Thanks!
For starters HTC ace phones don't have the best battery life to begin with because of the sync functions. Cm7 is a great rom but it only adds to the battery issue.
There are serveral apps, flashes and mods to the boot.prop file thar will help extend battery life. Do some leg work and Use the search to find these. I suggest googleing calibrate battery and battery drain on htc inspire/dhd. This issue has been covered repeatedly. And the mods and users don't care for the clutter of repeat posts
Last suggestion. Use the notification bar to turn off functions when you don't use them. Ie.... wifi, Bluetooth, GPS and turn your screen brightness down.
Also unsync Facebook, Google + and drop your email retreave function down from every 15min to several hours or not at all. (You can still get email this way by opening app)
This is about all the advise I can give you the rest is up to you and doing some reading.
I did all of these and I get about 14 hours of heavy ussage.
As far as finding your radio. Download and open this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=608910&d=1306506748

??? They have an Inspire, not an Ace.
Your battery definitely shouldn't be draining like that with that amount of use. Maybe try one of the current tracking apps to see what's using all your power.
Battery life depends largely on how you use it. Screen on uses about 80% of your battery. The more time it sits idle, the longer it goes on battery. I can get a whole day out of mine on a typical day with about 2 hours talking and a little fiddling with the phone. I also use wi-fi whenever possible because the wi-fi radio uses less power than the cellular data connection. If you're running dead after 6 hours I am willing to bet you are spending a lot of time using the phone. Try setting the brightness on the screen dimmer.

My biggest problem is that I want to use my phone without worrying about the
battery going dead, when I mean use my phone, I am talking about games, Internet,
and watching videos, stuff that requires the screen, the problem is that I cant use
the phone like that, at best with the screen on 100% of the time you might get 3 to 4
hours of battery life before the phone is dead, just using it as a phone the battery life
is enough, but if I just wanted a phone, I would have got something cheaper, there are a
few ways to deal with this, the same ways that I used when dealing with PDAs
in the past, -BTW PDAs had about the same battery life as this phone,- I had to
keep mutable chargers handy, one in my my car, one in the house, one in my travel
bag, and keep external battery packs to charge the PDA, I hate to do that, it seems
silly, even more so when the battery life is no better then way back in the early
2000s.
People have to start looking at today's smartphones as "pocket laptops". I've been saying this for a while. Battery size and capacity go hand in hand. You can't have a thin, light mini-computer and expect it to last for days on one charge like the old phones. There are many options to be sure you don't run out of power. Powerskin, seperate power pack, extra chargers for wherever you spend your time, extra batteries. There's not really any other way around it if you really use it a lot.
Battery life threads have been done to death. We all know the battery life is what it is. It will work for a real days worth of use for the average business user but for the kids playing games and watching movies well then it will only last a few hours.
Best advice is keep a charger handy
