I don't have gel, but I have soft rubber. I was told it wouldn't fit, since it was made for 9000, not 9003, but it works fine. has helped me with a few times my phone went BASE jumping from my hand to the floor, lol!
mine was also purchased in HK, is it the same as you have, fxzy?
if not, then these are similar, also on e-bay.

This kind of protection doesn't feature overheating problems? Specially when u use Overclocked Kernells?
My I9003 gains temperature when i use it for a long time, and i think that with a cover like the ones u mention the temp could be worse, affecting directly the processor

as far as I know, any cover will act as a heat barrier, causing temperatures to rise. on my phone, the only time it gets hot is when I play games while charging, or I sleep through my alarm for an extended period of time (lol)
installing any app that provides a heat alarm will help you know when to just stop and let the phone rest

Heat making phone "Special"

i have been a iphone fan since they have first came out... i recently switch from my I4 to the infuse... and i couldnt be happier... Except one thing... the heat... When i am out at the pool with my kid and i am listening to music thru "iHeartRadio" it will switch between my radio app and my music library... and play both at the same time... And i notice the phone gets RIDICULOUSLY hot and slows way down on performance...
Has anyone else noticed these issues? Will rooting and putting the infused 1.5 on help with this? I have jailbroke and unlocked many iphones so i dont see this being a hassle to do...
TIA
yes i have the same problem. Is your phone flashed/rooted? have u did over clocking the cpu? if you did and you have it really high u may want to turn ur cpu down. In my situation my phone was flashed and rooted i had my phone overclocked to 1600 on performance all the time. which burned my vibration cable. You might wanna clear your memory and close running programs this will help your phone a little from overheating.
I've noticed this and I'm still stocked. Of course it happened in the sun, on a 105 degree day, and in a Ballistic HC case. Basically, I was torturing the phone. I wa clued in when the phone vibrated and displayed "reducing screen brightness due to overheat". Turned off the web, took the case off, and 5 mins later all was well.

Not all of us can be basement dwellers.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Now now, it has nothing to do with being a basement dweller.
Example:
If you're out by the pool and want your phone near you, wrap it in a towel.
If you're out rebuilding the back deck and want your phone accessible, put it in a safe drawer of your toolbox or in a case on your belt.
Direct sunlight is the enemy when paired with heat and humidity; not 105 degree heat alone.
I'm not telling anyone the only way to protect your phone is to board up your mom's basement and never come out. Use discretion.
my infuse (with or without infused 1.5) runs hot when playing games within 10 minutes. that's what i have observed
To clarify, it was in the sun for less than 5 minutes, I was standing in line. And no, I am not going to carry an umbrella just to protect my phone. My point was more to the effect of "my phone is actually trying to protect itself", versus "damn overheating iPhone".

Yep sitting in the car dock my Infuse gets extremely hot. My prior iphone4 did the same thing.

[Modification] CPU, Ram and other IC Cooling for OCers

Warning: Attempt this modification at your own discretion. I am not responsible for any damages which may occur.
After attempting to OC my phone, I noticed hot spots when stressing my CPU at 1.4ghz. Looking at the anatomy of my phone (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-I-9000-Teardown/7122/1), I noticed the structural mid-plate is a metallic alloy. This modification tries to cool the CPU and other heat generating ICs by using the phone's mid-plate and EMI shielding as a heatsink.
Test:
CPU stressed for 10 Min at 1.4ghz starting from a minimum cooled state. Application: “Stability Test”
Before Mod: 53oC (127.5oF) at 7 min 48 sec (I cut the test short as I did not want to overheat my phone)
After Mod: 43oC (109.5oF) at 10 min 10 sec
Procedure:
1. Teardown your phone as per the ifixit.com site and extract the mainboard.
2. Remove the simcard & MicroSD EMI Shield
3. Apply thermal compound to all the raised ICs. This allows the EMI shield to act as a small heatsink.
4. Reinstall EMI Shield and press down firmly to allow proper contact with the thermal compound
5. On the other side of the mainboard, liberally apply thermal compound onto the exposed ICs as per the pictures. Note: There is a relatively large gap between the surface of the ICs and the mid-plate.
6. Reinstall mainboard and press firmly against the mid-plate. If the thermal compound is making contact with the midplate then there should be some slight resistance when trying to lift the mainboard. If there is no resistance, then you will need to apply more thermal compound.
7. Install remaining components and close up your phone.
I used Arctic Silver 5 as I had some laying around. It is probably better to use a non metallic thermal compound, but I have yet to experience any problems with electric components.
My phone has been modded for about 2 weeks, running @ 1.5ghz and I have yet to experience any ill effects with operating system or with the OLED screen.
Though this mod is reversible, it may be messy cleaning up the thermal compound from your phone.
Happy Modding
interesting idea...
although it sounds like your just trying to squish as much pb&j between the plate and the ic's.

indeed, i've never had trouble with AS5 but would probably go with a non metallic compound for this.
PS wow, that's a LOT of AS5... must have cost you $5 just in compound just to do that
Either way, conduction is almost always better than convection in terms of cooling a heat source. It might be a little messy, but the mod is quite effective.
The amount of thermal compound is quite a bit, but I wanted to ensure that I made contact with the 'heatsink'. There are many cheaper thermal compound alternatives than AS5, but I ran out of the generic white stuff.
very good idea.. thanks for sharing. do you think using thermal pad in this case would be better solution than thermal compound? or do think that thermal pad. won't work?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Although thermal pads would be cleaner, they are also more difficult to use in this application due to the variation in gap spacing between the component and heatsink.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Wanted to fix the GPS antenna connector, ended doing this aswell, although just RAM and CPU. The amount of thermal grease is really enourmous for a proper contact. To anyone who will do this aswell, take your time, its not hard, just be patient

I havent't measured it with any app, but noticed that the heat is more spreaded over the phone after some time playing a game... That's a good thing, I guess.
Looks like a good idea. Getting the most out of this little device always helps.

Power button question

Is everyone else's power button on the ATT HOX feel like it's hard to push? Maybe not hard to push but it's such a low profile that I feel that I am having problems pushing it... Hard to explain. Just making sure there isn't something wrong with the phone that I have. Just took back a case to Best buy because the power button was soooo hard to push in it. Sometimes didn't register.
Thanks all
AJ
Not just you. I'm having a hard time getting used to it from my old Captivate. (Of course it's about 12 times better in every other category, so I'm not too upset!)
Oh I'm not upset.....I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S2 and this phone is by far the best phone I've ever used so far but since every phone I've ever used has had a raised power button be it on the side or top, I was just worried that maybe I got a defect but I guess I didn't.
That's why I love this board. So friendly and polite. Thank you.
AJ
Hmm... Was your case the platinum holster one? That's what I'm using right now and It's kinda ridiculous how hard it is to press. It registers maybe 25% of the time I press it. I use my nail now though so it works every time almost.

LOL! Yep sure was. Took it back to Best Buy and the returns lady said that this was the third one she had seen today returned! I just want a simple silicone case with good protection and camera lip thing. Is there anything like that out there for the ATT HOX?
Thanks all
AJ
Hehe, thought it might be the same one. I noticed the packaging to my case was actually opened when I bought it. Someone might have returned it Sunday morning xD.
Not really sure what other cases are available that fit correctly. I recommend not getting one on eBay. Most block the camera. There's a thread about cases and pouches in the accessories section.

I just actually picked up that case today! I'm going to return it as well because I too am having a difficult time pressing it. Also, the fourth row of the speaker grill was also being covered. Pretty poor design.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I got a rocketfish gel/silicone semitransparent grey case at best buy for $25...it is light, fits snug and doesn't cover the speaker..covers the back well so that when you sit it down, the camera lens is in no danger of being scratched as the camera protrudes a little bit without case...I have same issue w power button but it's not hard to press...it's that it's so low profile that its hard to feel it...fantastic phone and battery is amazing...got 26 hrs out of first charge...got about 9 on my Vivid...but it was a 1600 mah battery where this one is 1800 or 1850, not sure though..and phone is about 1.5 ounces lighter..battery is better because it is embedded...you lose power anytime you 'plug" in a battery where the contacts are...this battery is directly on the board so there is no loss...same principle applies to hard wired appliances compared to those with plugs...coax cables with multiple splitters result in signal degradation on tvs...I think this is why HTC opted for embedded batteries as people complained about battery life...although my various iPhones in the past had poor battery life...but it is best to charge phone ONLY when battery is down to 10% or less...every time u charge, you lose approximately 30-45 seconds of total battery per charge so the less you charge the better...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Seriously? Do you really think your great batterylife is due to it being "embedded"(which it really isnt) and not having contacts(still has a connector)? Really?
Do you really think you lose 30seconds off your battery life by charging it before it is run down?
Ponderous.
Really erroneous info guy. Not helping. Did you just decide to make things up?
Battery life is better because of improvements with hardware. It uses less juice. PERIOD.
Lithium ion is extremely tolerant of charging from any level. Should have no adverse effect if you charge at any time, full, empty or in between.

Was your 8088 hardwired to your A/C at home so it was more efficient? Programming != electrical engineering.
Yes there is a TINY bit of loss by using contacts. It's an easy check with an ohmmeter. But it really only applies to high current applications, which we are not dealing with here. And no, it's not enough to make any measurable difference. And your coax analogy is ridiculous. We aren't dealing with gain, SNR, taps, etc. Geez.
Going back on topic, I now get 95% registers with the power button. If you press on the far left of the button it works almost every time with the platinum case. I think it just needed to be broken in.

Galaxy S4 GTi9505 Great!!!! But NOT too impressed about the design/material

So its been about 2 days so far and the phone is awesome....BUT....not too impressed on the plastic material design.
Should I be too worried when theres like a heat wave with temps around 100 deg F???
Will the phone "warp" or "bend" or will the plastic melt a little?
Ok ok ok....of course, I will not leave it in the car during a heat wave...Of course I will not do that. But what if I walk around with the phone in my pocket. Will the phone warp or bend a bit during those kinds of temperatures?
Battery life is awesome!!!! Well, because I disabled Wifi, NFC, and all pretty much everything including GPS and for about 2 days now, battery level is still around 70%
But, I really dont like the material and I dont know how will this be impacted during a heat wave.
Whats your take on this to all?
Thx

The OP is asking a serious question.
Mine turned into ice cream in my pocket on a hot day. Had to throw my pants out. Phone was never seen again.
But seriously, no it won't melt or warp at those temperatures. Do plastics in your cart melt or warp on a hot day? Most likely not.

Just afraid that the screen or the phone would warp or bend.
Like I said, of course, I will NOT leave it inside a car during a hot day....But, I would like to carry it with me in my pocket.

I'm pretty sure your phone will be fine, unless there's something you're not telling us. You don't by any chance live inside an active volcano, do you?
Every day for last 1 month was hot day here in India before the recent rains that cooled things down couple of days ago.
36-38°C was daily normal high. Did nothing to my 2 SGS4s.
It takes way higher than 100°F to melt or even soften the polycarbonate. My sister has spilled a piping hot coffee on SGS3 back which used similar material without any damage.
So no, 100F is nothing for these phones.
You will always have horror stories of people magically breaking their phones by doing nothing. Those few are there for every device. I have seen them in SGS3 forums, Note forums, HTC One forums and so on.
Those are not the norm. These phones are not the toys made to be used in nice temperate climate only.
THANKS !!!!!! For the quick help on this.
Makes me feel better now.
Don't worry, samsung qc usually already test usage in extreme temperature (-20 ~ 50 celcius). Even there is user youtube video for this test on s3.

[Q] Heat and Playing Games?

I.m just about to get a new phone maybe today.. And I'm really stuck between the HTC One Mini and S4 Mini.
Even though the HTC specs are alittle less than S4 Mini, from youtube videos games seem to run good on HTC Mini if not better.
My main concern about this phone is the heat this phone produces. I like to play my 3D games, but I've heard that the phone can get quite hot, and another thread describes cracks appearing in plastic?
I plan to use a strong case with my phone, and am worried about my phone burning out or warping under the heat. I'm a HEAVY user.
Whats the heat like for you? Does everyone suffer from heat? Is it something to worry about?
I may choose S4 Mini if heat is going to be a problem.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

In the real world they perform about the same unless you're a heavy user then the S4 Mini will get an edge in multitasking because of the extra 512 MB of memory, but you can always close a background app to speed things back up if it becomes a problem. I've been using my phone without a case for about a little over a month now and I don't have any cracks, but I do have a couple of scratches on my screen and on the glass covering the camera from light use even though it has Gorilla Glass 3. In the Gorilla Glass advertisements they scratch it with a key, stab it with a knife, slide a razor blade across the screen, and hit it with a rubber mallet and nothing happens, yet it scratches simply sliding in and out of your pocket. I've had the same problem with my Samsung Captivate and Motorola Atrix 4G so I think Gorilla Glass has always been a bunch of BS. The only time my phone gets warm is when I'm doing turn by turn navigation (screen on the entire time, GPS, 3G/4G) or if I've been using it for a while. I don't game on my phone so I can't comment on that. I'd suggest playing a demanding game at a local store for a little while and testing it out. The screen, speakers, camera, and feel on the One Mini is much nicer than the S4 in my opinion.
If you're looking for a mid-sized Android phone you might want to check out the Moto X. Even though it has a 4.7" screen it isn't much larger than the One Mini.
Someone else posted a similar thread which I replied to if you wanna check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472682
I prefer the HTC One so sorry if I'm somewhat biased.
I play some games on DrasticDS emulator, gets kinda warm tbh, but I'm usually bored by the time it happens and I stop playing
Had my phone 3 days now and loving it! Been playing all sorts of intensive games and haven't noticed any problems with heat. Yeah it can get warm now and then but with a metal back it's bound too, better at drawing heat away from your chips.
