Yes and no - I agree that porting the OS will be stuck with no dev until Google shows us some love, but someone dumped the ICS apps in android general here at XDA.
We can at least start on the long, slow process of converting the odexed apps into de-odexed version reverse compatible with gingerbread...some very small progress has already been made in this department.
Way off my radar at the moment with all else going on, but there's a start there for anyone who feels like eating some ice cream

First thing's first in Doubleshot development: We need working AOSP.

I agree with the need for a working vanilla gingerbread ROM...gotta get back to basics and go up from there.
Something that turned developers off to the idea before was the fact that you will lose the HTC camera app in the process, and it was generally agreed upon that this was undesirable.
Now that we've had some ROMs come out, we have dev rolling in various directions with different flavors of the android experience working on the device, maybe someone or a couple someones will get together and make some progress in his direction.
AOSP android for gingerbread really is the first step to getting ICS ported.
My time is being focused in other directions - I'm willing to lend a hand or do testing for anyone interested in working on this, but the project itself is outside my interests at the moment.
More and more people are becoming interested in this... Sooner or later someone will take a stab at it and get enough going to legitimately make a post about it in the dev section. I know I'll jump on and help support such a project, and i'm not alone - there are others floating around who will be able to give quality feedback and reports on testing that are waiting in the wings for someone to start this project, and once complete ICS isn't far behind.

I was thinking about getting the galaxy nexus when it came out, but honestly, if ICS camera app is halfway decent, I'm probably going to stick with this phone. ICS looks amazing btw!

Someone will find a way to port the camera's features to an app we can use. Also, the Galaxy Nexus? We have 64GB SD cards coming out soon and that phone has no SD slot!

That's the kernel source for the device itself. This is the last piece of the puzzle we needed from HTC - so we're done with them now.
Until Google releases the source code for ICS, it's unknown what will have to be done (if anything...) to reverse engineer it to work on our device.
Assume lots of work and banging your head against the wall to make it happen, but who knows - it might be little to no work at all. We just won't know until Google releases their source code. I haven't been paying attention, so don't know if any release date's been announced.

Didn't know about this - MT4GS is my first smart phone, so I don't have much history about prior developments, i'm learning it as I go.
This is very happy news, however, and if this is a precedent then a 64 gig card will just read in the phone. Until someone tries we won't know, unless someone can definitively say "yes, it's a hardware limitation" or "no, it's a coded limitation".
If it's just a coded limitation, then we can do something about it. If it's a hardware limitation, we're kinda stuck. If someone knows for sure, please speak up.

Cyanogen beats ALL manufacturers to 2.3

Just read on Twitter. Cyanogen has 2.3. (sadly not for us).
But to put it in perspective. As their official Twitter announcement stated.

yeah my buddy has been running CM7 for a few weeks now i think on his HTC Desire.
because of the camera and mms issues he went back to 6.1 though.
Either way progress up stream always helps us!
Not us specifically since we have already been told we wont be seeing cm for our device unless somebody not on the cm team ports it.

Just saying. Even if we never see CM7 there is still the knowledge that they gained that could be used.
More importantly it shows the ingenuity and selfless dedication that the DEVs in the community have..
Yeah that is true... imagine what amazing things we could get if some manufacturer would hire a couple of these devs and take the risk of having a totally open phone that could come rooted and available to theme and install roms on... the amount of work the developers we have could do if they were being paid an actual salary and had tons of coders and R&D and everything is just too much to think about. imagine how much money they could make from all the hacker/developer people that would jump on a device like that.

well according to some foreigners GB was released for the galaxy family about 2 to 3 weeks ago
but that was a foreign release not an american release, im not sure if that matters
your rite dX but i think the issue is with drivers... like i'm sure u could get gb running... but would be like having an ipad1 lol... if that makes sense....
Yeah I think only the S2 has gingerbread and that's the only one we can port it from. The issues are usually drivers and most of the time we'll lose battery life.
Nah the original galaxy S has gingerbread. We have a kernel and an ext4 fs now so it shouldnt be as bad as trying to port it over like before.

Well, here is where I'm coming from:
While up to this point everything we have, as far as roms, are ports (we don't really have a choice because samsung is stingy with their source codes). While this is great for most of what we use, some parts that are really deep in the code (java, framework, device specific hardware, etc....) will HAVE to be compiled in one way or another. You cant just grab the GB file system and try to slam it into our device...never happen. Far too many parts and pieces rely on each other. So once I can get my stuff straight, I will start a clean repo of the GB source (I already have the samsung kd1 source stuff) and try to merge them the best I can. Then the sh*t hits the fan. Will it compile? Probably not.......Now we have to resort to past experience, help from others that have compiled, and google your ass off!
As an example: Shared libs are a freakin nightmare!! Did you know that things like camera, video, and even some audio stuff use the same exact libs? I didn't either until I started compiling. So if one of these is broken....none of it will work. Probably won't even compile, let alone boot.
I'll support anyone who wants to do something productive with our phone.

Oh absolutely. The key is how the file system reads itself in GB. The cpu just plain 'ol doesn't have to work as hard. Better battery life, faster and smoother overall performance, graphics, etc...... Plus like I said, it has features that froyo just doesn't have. Absolutely no need for task killers anymore. It's all integrated into the system.
And to answer your question, yes. If one part of that lib doesn't jive......compiling just stops, end of story. Now you have to search through all of your source files and TRY to find out what's wrong. Then google google google for any sign of a solution. This is virgin ground when compiling aosp from source. Not easy at all.
That doesn't touch the tip of the iceberg either. Try modifying code (which has to be done sometimes). C, C++, Java, etc.....sh*t can get hairy.

Ice Cream Sandwitch / Android 4.0 Roms

Sorry if this is a dumb question. As i dont know how Roms come to be or how people port stuff from one phone to another etc.
But my question is, once Android 4.0 is released with the Prime. Will there be Android 4.0 Roms for the G2X. And if so... Will it take long?
If there wont be. I might have to switch to Verizon and get the Prime.

Yes, i'm sure once ICS source code is available our devs will port it over to our devices. With ICS being delayed probaly till end of November it's just a waiting game now...
I dont think it will take too long. I guess it depends how fast the devs get it and create one.
I had a Milestone 2 with a locked bootloader and it finally got Gingerbread but I think G2x is unlocked and easy to create.
Im sure it wont take no time to Cyanogenmod to stark working on ICS
I'm sure we'll get it. Thanks to guys like faux and the cm team, we already have an aosp base. I'm sure there will be drivers that need to be written/re-written, and bugs to work out, but we'll get it. Plus, I'd put money on the fact that once the source code for ics is released, the cm team will start integrating the newer version into cyanogenmod. We probably won't get it right away, and we definitely won't get it officially from lg or tmobile, but I'm sure we'll get it eventually.
Once CM8 is released, it should be released on the G2x along with other devices. I just hope we can disable the software Home & Menu keys.

Android 4.0 is suppose to be compatible with all android devices within 2 years old, and manufactures have agreements with Google that there should be official releases on all these devices. I highly doubt that will happen.
Also, the next Nexus device, by whatever name, won't be exclusively Verizon. It may for a period, but the FCC Documents show that it does in fact HAVE AT&T/Global AND T-Mobile 3G/4G bands, and no LTE.
Wait for official announcements on the phone, but I can guarantee the G2x will have 4.0 one way or another.
The agreement to update all devices for 18 months its for devices released post-ics. We're not eligible, though we will probably get CM8.

from what I hear MR. CM himself uses the g2x as his personal device so I think it will happen prety fast probally faster than others. I could be wrong about that I read it on a fourm when the g2x was still new. You never know how reliable those sources are.
I heard he got a job with Samsung. Though I speculate nVidia will release drivers since so many devices use the T2 soc
Not too worried since the g2x community has a lot of talented and smart developers already
I would expect an official upgrade as well though, seriously its a google experience phone, while not the top selling it has the specs and what not to get the upgrade.

OK so the hold up now seems to be LG right? in search for lg device drivers?
I think its ready for a ALPHA test now.. touchscreen works 100% and so does the radio wifi etc.. hardware acceleration wont be coming anytime soon but i can live without it for now
There are a lot of things that will need to be ironed out before we can even consider a beta.
First hand, without hw acceleration the phone crawls.

Hope you can get HW acceleration to work soon. Can't you do whatever other roms like cyanogen mod did?
Its not like they got exclusive access to tegra drivers...
The problem is the binary blob implements hw acceleration according to the way Gingerbread expects it which is different than how Honeycomb and ICS do it.
I've seen at least one person talk about rewriting the library from the android side to match how the nVidia blob works. Which would be a good backup plan if LG renegs on the ICS update for our phones.

Hope you can get HW acceleration to work soon. Can't you do whatever other roms like cyanogen mod did?
Its not like they got exclusive access to tegra drivers...

I understand it's not as easy as copy paste source code, but the strategy should be the similar. I've never done any low level development so I'm just shooting in the dark here.
Also cm9 is expected in 2 months and I assume it will support the g2x. I wouldn't count on lg for anything. So rewriting the library is probably the best bet.
Glad to see so many new people jumping on and helping out. I'm sure most people here would help if they knew how.
Thanks for the work, guys! Where can we donate?
I've been a lurker on these forums for a long time and never realized I had to have 10 posts to post in the developer forums, so at least I can post in this thread. I will be getting up to speed on the ICS source over the next couple days and hope to join the effort in development of the port to the g2x as soon as I have my dev environment up. I'll be sitting in the IRC channel to ingest the info on where you guys are at so that I can jump in and help with any parts (sound maybe?) that you guys need assistance with.
Great job so far, hopefully I can be of assistance.

There's never such a thing as too much help.
I'm sure you can provide something good to the already great team working on this!

NEW video on the front page of the development thread!... although most will probably look at that thread before this one, lol.
But anyways, the touchscreen is fully working now!
The speed of this devving is amazing! I commented on the video already, but wow you guys are doing an amazing job! Thanks for all the effort you're putting into this!

Well seeing as the O2x is getting ICS we should be seeing a fully functional ROM afterall

Thought I read somewhere that they weren't working it for the G2x? Or at least not any time soon?

Actually, CM9 has been running on the G2x since Thanksgiving and according to a dev running well. They're still testing so aren't ready to release anything yet but we'll have it very, very soon.
I'm very curious to see it in action.do we know if it's accelerated graphics or framebuffer?

Ok all g2x ics stuff goes here!!

ICS ANDROID QUESTIONS GO HERE!!!!!
Quite frankly im sick of seeing a new thread or an old thread revised every 4 weeks. Basically from the point of a dev and a fan I am submitting this thread. I want to see every old or dev thread closed and all questions or suggestions pointed here.
I have personally exhausted most of my resources trying to fix the problems we have within our tegra g2x builds. This device is completely closed source rather like to admit it or not. blame it on all you want to.ether
The bottom line is lg and nvidia only releases source for their bottom line **** that makes tegra work, and we have done patched that in and made it work to some extents.
Yes Alot of us devs can make cm9 work and alot of us can make aosp4.0.3+ work. but they will not opensource their work. To the same extent we where stuck at with the vibrant and the gps issue.
All i can say is do not buy another lg device or another tegra device. Yes the transformer is bad ass, but if you protest to a level to where no one wants there work they will be forced as an oem to make there manufactures push their source and make it relevant to the point the oems do.....
Thanks for this, all the other ones seem really useless and never stay on track anyway. . I wonder how long it'll take before some guy trolls the hell out of this one. Lets try to keep this one only pertaining to AOSP ICS or CM9 development and/or progress.
This works...but at some point it will get off track...most of the people that are in the the other threads can't get a working build and since we don't have any builds to test anymore its tough to stay on topic with something you aren't using.

Yea, that's crap, I mean, one of the things I like about Android is the open-sourceness. If only OEM's would realize that an open-source system will, in my opinion at least, get more and better support FROM THE COMMUNITY tahn a totally closed system. Take Windows for example, we all have have things to complain about and most can't do that much, even with third-party programs which can be used to correct problems or bugs or add features. On the other hand, there's a game series I follow where the Dev's explicitly made the games open for easy modification, the only "closed" part is the actual engine itself which was developed from scratch. And what resulted was a fan base who took initiative to correct bugs and add features, sure people didn't like the fact that the games had bugs initially but not only did the community take action but the devs even incorporated community fixes into official patches and credited the person who made the fix. Now the dev company has gone solo and publish their own games and are due to release a fourth in the series with a strong fan base. And here we have people who will refuse to ever touch, Nvidia and/or LG ever again, and not just because of bugs, but the fact that it's closed and we get crap for official releases and fixes and crap for support.
/end rant
Ok let's get on subject, what works and what doesn't work in the ics development for our phone? I don't have a twitter or facebook so I don't keep up with the news.

On the old alpha builds, it was sound and camera that didnt work i believe. On my build, it was data, camera and sound. Don't know about kwes' build. CM supposedly fixed the sound issue, but aren't sharing sources yet. So we're kinda at a stand-still until LG releases some source, or CM lets us know how they fixed the sound issue.
I just compiled the aosp 4.0.3 for G2x. I used the google's sources not CM9. However it doesn't boot. I was just wondering how did you guys got it to boot?
Also, the aosp source requires recovery as well to make the otapackage. Is there any way to make the otapackage without recovery? This is not a very big issue as i can manually make the otapackage.
booting up is the big hurdle. Any help is highly appreciated
Thanks

Even if the CM team let you know how to fix the sound issue, wouldn't you still be at a stand-still? (camera and data)
Seems odd to include the second half of that sentence.

Well CM has had perfectly working ICS build except camera since Thanksgiving. That was like 2+ months ago, maybe they've fixed camera by now who knows.

Right, unless CM got camera and data to work. And if all this is going to be open source anyhow, why the secrecy and lack of sharing? As far as I understand no one is making or going to make money off this so, what is it? Is it some petty game of who's the biggest baddest dev?
People can remember CM for being the first to release ICS for the G2x but only because they kept their work secret and didn't share or because they shared their work with others and others with them and they came out on top because they are better or they didn't because they aren't better, etc.
@moeahmad1995
Back on subject? It's a general thread which is all inclusive: "Ok all g2x ics stuff goes here!!"

I'd guess that there are many reasons for CM to keep their source closed for now, not the least of which is reputation. Also competition is one of the things that drives development. Open source is not just about giving hard work away for free.
Here's a great article that helped me to better understand the nature of open source.

If there's anything I can do, let me know. I can't help much with development, but I have access to a large audience. For those who don't know, I'm a writer for ACSYNDICATE.NET and will help any way I can. Thanks for sticking with it devs, and thanks for all the new roms!

I hope this help fix audio problem...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my fix for SU660 ICS audio...and it work for my ICS AOSP 4.0.3 (SU660 = KR version P990)
I think currently, we must use the libaudio from CM7/Stock rom.......
SO...
1. Modify star-common/BoardConfigCommon.mk
BOARD_USES_GENERIC_AUDIO := false
BOARD_USES_AUDIO_LEGACY := true
# Use dirty hack to allow froyo libaudio
BOARD_HAVE_BLUETOOTH := true
BOARD_HAVE_BLUETOOTH_BCM := true
2. Add audio.primary.p990 audio_policy.p990 into your star-common/star.mk. (This will use hardware/cm/audio. DONT USE audio.primary.tegra audio_policy.tegra!)
3. Use my hardware_legacy.tgz , extract it into star-common/include. The code is mainly from VorkTeam's github, thanks. I only made some fix in it.
4. Copy from CM7/Stock rom : libaudio.so, liba2dp.so, liblvvil.so
Audio should work now...
