Hi Gang,
Just looking for general advice and ideas regarding any solution to this puzzle!
Scenario:
Dell Streak 5, Android 2.2.2, GAUSB1A135100-EU
I've been using Titanium Backup Pro to keep regular backups of the data and apps on it.
Couple of weeks now Android Market was not allowing updates to run, giving the "101 error" etc that other people have posted. Most common solution to this seems to have been do a factory reset, to wipe off the linked gmail account, and recreate to get Market running again.
So I did a TB full backup, factory reset, and recreated my gmail account, and market is back up and running, and now updating the 20+ apps fine.
Problem: My Call Logs, Contacts and Messaging is still wiped, even after I have restore all my data and apps from Titanium Backup.
No, I did not have my contacts, etc synced to gmail, because I don't really use it that much and was concerned about privacy issues.
The question I have is this: Did the full data and app backup I performed on Titanium Backup backup my Contacts and SMS/MMS/Messages? If yes, then why will they not restore? If no, then is there any way to recover or locate them?
I'd like to recover my Messaging section most of all, if possible!
Many thanks, in advance.
WB
If I'm not mistaken, the SMS messages are under the TB entry named "[SMS/MMS/APN] Mobile Network Configuration" Try double checking you restored the backup for that.

No the data and app backup did not back those up.
@JMC: Thanks for the reply; yeah I've tried doing a restore on any item relating to Contacts, Messaging, SMS/MMS that is coming up in the Restore list under TB, all of which appear as Green items and sometimes with the [] at the start as you indicated.
Unfortunately, none seem to be restoring the messages etc. I've even looked on the microSD card to see if the TB backup files are empty, and they appear to be healthy sizes, so there must be "something" backed up in them....
@Zelendel: Thanks; well if what you say is true, then that is a damn shame. I figured TB would do a more complete job of backing everything up like it promises... bad assumption on my part if you're sure of your information.
I guess I'll see if anyone has a contradicting opinion, and the move on.
I wonder if you have any recommendations on how to backup that stuff for future adventures? Thinking of syncing Outlook with Gmail and then syncing the Streak with Gmail from now on.... mind you that won't secure SMS/MMS correspondence, just my issue of Contacts!
Titanium Backup will backup everything, but you have to make sure you have it backing up system app data if too, because the messaging app for texting is a system app. Regular app and data backup does not backup any system apps. You just have to be careful when restoring system app data. I tried restoring gmail settings to a newer version of gmail and I caused syncing to completely stop working. I haven't had any problems restoring SMS/MMS though.

Yes as stated above. Messaging is a system app so it your backing up user apps and data then it will not back up your messages. Then you get into the issue that unless you flash the excat same rom it is never advised to restore system data of any kind as there could be big changes that restoring system data breaks. I would use a 3rd party app to back it up.
LAst time i backed up all my messages call logs and contacts, was using an app called super backup. Havent found anything wrong with it. Forgot which folder it stores the files in, but after i did factory reset and downloaded the app again, i was able to restore everything. Hope it helps

Hi @WikedBlade!
I realise its probably too late to b answering ur q. But perhaps this cud b of help to u in the future:
TB does backup cal logs, contacts, n msgs if u choose to backup sys data. And generally, after doing a restore u need to reboot ur fone for the data to b back again.
It's that simple . And do remember nvr to use backup n restore of sys data unless u r going to b using the exact same ROM b4 n after!
greatttt... thxxx totally helped me out in this matter

Then it isn't advisable to restore system data from TB as
it can cause sync issues or even break certain system functionalities.
So, in the case that you're planning to use a different ROM, I'd recommend that you backup your call logs, messages on this app called SMS Backup & Restore by Carbonite. Thru this you can restore on any ROM thereafter.
I wanted to flash a new ROM and wanted to backup my SMS and contacts. I used an app on the market (Super Backup : SMS & Contacts) and backed up. I don't know where the saved backup is now because its not in the folder where it usually saves in. Is it hidden? Deleted?
Thanks.
If it's not in the directory the application usually saves into, then it is probable that it was deleting during flashing for whatever reason. Try using Recuva by Piriform or another data retrieval tool to recovery them.
I've never heard of Recuva but I'll have a look at it now. Thanks!
Hi,
for sms backup you can test the free app from market "sms backup and restore". After backup your sms you can find the data on sdcard in folder SMSBackupRestore.
For backup Contacts the easiest way is to have a gmail account
Yeah it should of saved into that folder but it doesn't seem to be in that folder.
if there is really such backup process, that would be really great. i'll try it.
Next time save contacts to sim card then transfer contacts to phone from sim card.

Try using Super backup and drop box, both free. Backup your SMS and contacts with Super Backup, then move the backup file, which will be located on your SD card, into your drop box. Then you can restore the backup from any device with those 2 apps.
"my backup pro" will also do the job, have backed up all my data and moved it to a new device numerous times!
Wrong section should be in q & a

Just backup your contacts to Gmail, if you haven't already. Its really the way Android is meant to be used. If your contacts are saved to Gmail, they just sync automagically to your new phone (or when you flash a ROM) when you first power the phone on, and login to your Google account.
Various ways to backup SMS. The app SMS Backup+ works nicely to backup your texts to Gmail.
I've been trying to restore my old text messages to my M8.
I tried before rooting and it didn't work.
I tried after rooting and it didn't work.
I tried after doing the MicroSD hack and it didn't work.
Anyone else having this problem??
please help, thanks!!
Try MyBackup in play store. Worked for me. Hope it helps.
Hmm sms backup has my backup sms saved to Gmail. MyBackup will restore my sms from there??
Thanks for the reply

Try changing it to the default messaging app before restoring. When I used my SMS backup app it told me it has to be default for it to restore the messages. After its done you can go back and change back to whatever messaging app you were using. You can find the option to change apps in settings then more towards the top where the WiFi and Bluetooth selections are.
I use Hangouts as my SMS client and restoring via TiBu does restore my texts.
Hancent has a backup built in but it saves them as xml files I believe.
Never determined how to backup GO SMS.
For me, I want to use TiBu to restore all my texts and have now gotten use to the interface.
YMMV

I should say im trying to recover my SMS but i dont have it on my old phone anymore. It is only saved on my gmail account. Thats how SMS Backup+ backs up the SMS.
thanks
SMS Backup and restore has been working flawlessly for me from the thunderbolt to
DNA to the M8. Great program and even can upload/backup to Dropbox or Google drive.
If you have your old phone prior to the M8..I'd extract those old texts you want on it..then use another program to back them up on the older phone..then get that new program on the M8 and extract the text backup

It has always worked for me as well. Going from GN, to S4, to G2, but for M8 it hasnt restored it.
I have tried a few times and it just says "8548 restored (8547 duplicate)" something like that.

I think you are using a different program than I do. Mine is SMS Backup and Restore by Ritesh Sahu....I think yours is SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel?
So if you have your old phone still, I'd restore all the texts on it (I am assuming that would still work)...install the program I use...back it up and upload the backup file to dropbox or google drive.
Then on your M8, install the program I use and then bring down that backup file from Google Drive (or Dropbox) and get all of your old texts on the M8

Hope it works! And as previously stated...to restore messages in Kit Kat..
SMS Backup and Restore will prompt you telling you it needs to be the default messaging app. Allow that and then you can restore....then go back into your settings and change the default messaging app to whatever you use for texting...probably the stock messaging app I presume.
