[Q] What would happen if I put my 4G sim card in a Xoom 4G? (unlimited data plan) - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Droid Bionic with 4G grandfathered unlimited data plan. Curious to know what would happen

You would then have an unlimited data plan on your xoom.
I've been using my Tbolts on my xoom for about a week. I forwarded my cell calls to my Gvoice number and have been using my xoom as a phone the whole time with Groove IP.
The 3g connection is routed through the sim card too so you don't even have to worry about using your xooms data account(assuming you have one) when you leave a 4g area.

I havn't even activated a data plan on my Xoom which is still 3G. Without a Xoom data plan is this not possible?

If you have had the 4G upgrade done your xoom will be able to use your active 4G simcard regardless of having a data plan for your xoom or not.
My xoom is not active at the time of the upgrade, but still is able to use my tbolts SIM.

Thank you for your shared knowledge
My only concern though is that what if Verizon catches on to this? Should I worry?

I don't know what will happen. I've been doing it for a while now.
But I interpret the following FAQ answer that according to Verizon this is acceptable use of our 4g sim cards.
http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/faqs/VZAccess/4g_sim_card.html?grp=1&faq=8
" Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM in more than one device?
Yes; the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card contains all of your subscriber information, so the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card."

Can't wait to get my 4G enabled phone so I can try this out. I bought a zoom off of a friend that had the 4G upgrade done for a great price so once I get my Nexus I'm all over this.

Thank you again!

Yes, I bought the $15 tether option and ran through 5Gb in a week. My data speed was so crippled apps that require data would have time-out errors. So I made them refund the $15 and now I must wait for when my plan resets for the next month before my speed will resume. Speeds were less than 2kbs.
If having home internet is not possible then find a comfortable place that offers free wi-fi.

To Epic? Will that work? My son always hits his 5Gb about 2/3rds into the billing cycle. I tell him to quit using his 3g my touch as a modem but he takes care of my mom during the weekdays and she will not install install internet, even though we have offered to pay for it.
Thanks.

It seems that you are on a grandfathered plan that probably have a 10Gb cap.

Data Speeds are Unbelieveable!

I am not sure if it is the network adapter that is in this phone but I was experiencing blazing fast web browser experience.
This is a quote from my wife -- "Wow, that is faster than in the computer, It is Instant"
Literally, I click the button and the website is already loaded for me. I was connected on my WiFi.
Same scenario with my previous Galaxy S 4G was nowhere near even though that phone has a newer network adapter as well, supporting 21mbps.
I will be testing the 4G speeds on this phone and will post results.

Where is your information coming from regarding the G2x supporting 42mbps? According to all specs, it supports 14.4mbps.
I read here that it's 21?

"T-Mo has placed some of its own apps in the main menu, notably T-Mobile TV, which should work decent on account of the 21Mbps HSPA+ 4G radio in the G2x."

A blog saying it really isn't very concrete I don't think. I have seen more blogs say 14.4 than that one blog saying 21. However, I can't find it specified on the T-Mobile or LG official product pages. Can anyone find this listed somewhere officially.

I cannot. Both LG and Tmobile never state specifically the speeds this device can support
I think you should appreciate the speed measured in Lower Manhattan.

Text from AT&T about 4G

This morning I got this text from AT&T about needing a 4G data plan. I came from an iPhone 4 and bought an Inspire 4G on ebay and just used the same SIM. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do? I have an unlimited data plan so I don't wanna lose it.

You need to get a 4G sim card from the AT&T store
Sim card doesn't matter
Sent via the power of a unicorn's horn.
@poetofsound,
All you have to do is call AT&T and tell them to switch your plan to a 4G plan. It's the same price as 3G ($15 for 200MB, $25 for 2GB). If you've currently got the iPhone unlimited plan, then you will be grandfathered into the unlimited 4G plan.
is it possible to do that without changing my plan up and would I still be able to switch between iphone and inspire?

Yes, you can just keep the same plan you have now. It's the same plan data-wise and speed-wise; AT&T merely has separate 3G/4G plans in their system, and they've detected that you're using the Inspire instead of an iPhone. No need to change sims or anything, it's merely a technicality in their system.
Alright thanks for the info! I live right down the street from the AT&T store so I'll just go there.
I had a similar problem with ATT that they told me my unlimited plan would not work with the Inspire 4G. I called on the phone and spoke with a manager and she said it would be okay. So, if they keep telling you that you can't do it, just keep at them and they will eventually give in.
I just got a new inspire from ATT.
When I activated the phone, it gave me the 3g plan. I had to call to get it switched to 4g. Is there really any difference in sim card and/or plans other than semantics?

The plans which ATT claim are 4G are capped plans. You need the Smartphones Personal plan. If you had it on 3G you can get grandfathered in. I'm using a 3G sim in a rural area with just one 3G tower and getting 5mbps down with 1mbps up. The salesman at the shack had to call ATT because the plan is not listed, but I was able to keep it. As long as you are within 30 days of signing the contract you have the right to make them give you your unlimited data back.
Sent from my Inspire using the dark side.
The only reason they tell you that you have to be on the '4G' plan is so they can track usage, and the only reason for the '4G' sim is because that sim is LTE ready- so whenever ATT launches LTE, some phones will be good to go.
The '4G' plan is a load. Currently, ATT's '4G' networks is HSPA+... which is just the true potential of 3G, but not quite real 4G... REAL 4G will not be available on ATT till ATT launches LTE sometime next year...
I read the title to this thread
and had hope that they chose you to text that there really is an LTE chipset in the Inspire....oh never mind

Haha! Nice! Sorry for the confusion If I do I'll contact you first
When I switched from an iphone to inspire, they also need to change your voicemail configuration. apparently it wasn't all part of a single process for the conversion. what ended up happening was they did not change my voicemail over and I was unable to access the voicemail system from my inspire.
Have you check out Youview. Great voicemail for Inspire!
AT&T is a bunch of shady bastids when it comes to data plans, they want to charge you for using their under-performing network so they can not upgrade it some more. But if you keep after them they'll switch you to an unlimited 4G plan, grandfathering crosses over.

Blaze showing that I'm connected to "AT&T"

Does anyone else have this sort of issue using T-Mobile? My Blaze is showing that its connected to "AT&T", rather than T-Mobile. No, my phone is not unlocked, nor do I have an AT&T SIM card, or the service. If I enable 3G/4G, the icon will not appear, and data won't function.
This has also happened a few times with my old T-Mo phone, the HTC G2. Its very annoying, because I can't use my service. Seems to be happening quite often with my Blaze, which has prompt me to create this topic for answers, hopefully. So if you've noticed this too, and have an explanation and/or fix, please reply.
Thanks.

I have that happen to me when T-Mo isn't available and AT&T is. That's what happens when you roam on their network. More often this happens in my house as AT&T has better signal penetration.
I don't get good signal at my house either. Mostly EDGE with 1 or 2 bars. Sometimes though, 3G or 4G.
Um.. also, I have Data Roaming set to off, all the time.
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda-developers app
Voice roaming and data roaming are two different entities, if I'm not mistaken. Blocking data roaming will do only that.
So, my phone is basically "voice roaming"? I don't know too much about roaming, other than the fact that I think it allows you to use your device on someone else's network with your T-Mobile SIM, right? And if you do that, the bill is generally more expensive? Anyway, if this is whole situation is completely normal, then I guess I'm done.. still, I find it annoying.
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda-developers app
Tmobile has a deal with att in areas where tmobile has no service you are technically roaming on att towers but your and still paying normal rates. I was worried about my vacation where I had no coverage and att was a partner carrier and service still worked. confirmed by tmobile rep when I inquired about it. so it can happen from time to time
No voice roaming fee- check settings
There's no such thing as any kind of voice roaming charge. If you lose your T-Mo coverage and there's an AT&T tower that T-Mo shares with AT&T (they both often share where there is little population to maintain service in those areas) then once you get back into T-Mo coverage your phone should automatically switch back to T-Mo. You can also select the network manually to the T-Mo network by going to Settings>Wireless and Network>Mobile Networks>Network Operators>Search Now. IF T-Mo shows up then tap T-Mo (wait up to 5 minutes) and volia! You will be back on T-Mo's network and data will be enabled again. You could also just turn off the phone and turn it back on (if I'm not mistaken the phone will select the network automatically). I always run into this when travelling back to Indiana for the holidays when I go through Wisconsin.
EDIT: Domestic data roaming is free but you have a tiny data cap defined here: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-3299
So it is in fact safe to turn on data roaming. But 10-50 Megs will be burned up fast.
Wow.. so basically, my phone was only just roaming... I'm such a newb..
Thanks for the clarificatons. Yeah, I was restarting my device to get it back onto T-Mobile. I'll try that way you mentioned.
Topic resolved.

Question Updated to c63 broke sim.

Op9 global Verizon sim. Na version. As soon as I rebooted into c63 x was in signal bar. Anyone found a fix . I know OnePlus sent some bung build. Any help would be great I've already msm tool back to 11.2.4.4 and updated. signal.is just gone.
So are you saying even on 11.2.4.4 you don't have signal?

Correct. But I just found out an hour or so ago. It's a Verizon network outage in my direct area. Just happened to happen exactly as I was taking C-63 update. Then I spent hours using msm tool to find no data on anything even custom. Hopefully fixed soon.Funny. It's my carrier. Never even thought that once.

I always hear about verizion network outages. ive been on mint mobile for 3 years that is just an MVNO on T-Mobiles network and have never had an outage, just coverage issues in deep rural areas.
pay $15 a month (180$ annually) , 5 GB of data, unlimited talk/text and acceptable 5G speeds. Here is a speed text I just ran on my phone. Not bad for the node it ran against is on the other side of New York and on a lower prioritized MVNO of its network.
