Hello, I have a question I hope you can help me with...
I've got a nexus S 2.3 and Ive just deleted a very important text msg thread, have I lost it forever or is there anyway that I can recover it??
If I can recover it can you please tell me what I should do as I ve never done anything ike this before. Many thanks, concerned android user.
Never tried anything like this before, so just some ideas as a general outline:
The first thing you should do is a complete image of the phone before the data can be overwritten (if it isn't already).
There is no convenient way to undelete that I know of.
I would search for the sms database file and try some sqlite tools on it. Look if there are entries that are marked as deleted or something.
If that doesn't bring anything up, I would use a good (hex-)editor to extract the strings from the file and see, if the data is somehow still there.
Anyway it will probably mean a lot of work, depending on how many sms you have stored and the best you should hope for is that you can manually reconstruct the thread in a text file or on a piece of paper.
Hello cgi,
thanks for the reply with advice!!
what is a complete image? how do i do this?
how do i search the sms database?
where do i get hex editor from?
do i need to back up any data before trying to recover anything?
many thanks,
Ray

An image is a complete copy of the data on the phone. The easiest way to do that is to use a custom recovery system like clockworkmod recovery. If you have a custom ROM installed, chances are, that you already have it.
First: Is your bootloader locked or unlocked?
Second: Which version of Android exactly is one your phone?
If your bootloader is unlocked, you can install a recovery image that will let you backup the data partition where your sms database should reside.
If your bootloader is locked but your Android version is 2.3.3 or lower, you can use an exploit that let's install a different recovery image.
If your bootloader is locked and your Android version 2.3.4 (and your phone is not rooted), then AFAIK you are out of luck.

I don't know in which files your sms are being stored, but it should not be that hard to find out.

There are a lot out there. I use okteta from the KDE project, but you can use whichever you want. You could use notepad, too, i guess, but that won't make things any easier.

That's the image I was talking about. You would first copy all the data on your computer.
CGIi,
Many many thanks for taking the time to reply to my question!!
I dont think there is much chance of recovering this thread, my friend has about half of the 900 texts in the thread which makes it slighty easier to swalow.
once again the importance of backing things up is key to keeping the pics, files, texts you want to keep. I'l try to do this even more in the future, I'm so sick of losing data from old mobiles, PC'S etc, I'm gonna back up everything from now on!!
Many thanks again, RAY
This Guide is for any user that has a Rom installed. This will back-up almost everything the user has put on the phone.
So, here are some things you need.
Heimdall One Click KB2 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172 (thanks to AdamOutler)
1) First, make a nandroid backup.
2) Make an /efs backup (adb pull /efs) (also can use an app called nitrality available in market)
3) Now, you will need to Plug in your phone to the computer. Take ALL the folders on your SD card and copy them to your laptop. (Mine was user/android/sdcardbackup)
4) Remove Micro-sd card, and SIM card
5) Open up your dialer and dial this code *2767*3855# THIS WILL WIPE YOUR SD CARD and /DATA
6) Reboot the Phone
7) put your Phone in download mode, open heimdall One Click and insert the phone and make sure that heimdall recognizes it
8) Flash the new firmware Bootloaders not required
9) Have the Phone Boot up Completely (takes a long time)
10) Check to see if your /efs has been edited. Use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881162 (and your efs backup) to get it back.
11) You might want to dial *2767*3855# Just in case if there is anything left.
12) You should be running KB2, have your SD cleared, and ready to be turned into samsung.
Post Questions and comments below!
i decided to save this one, no clue why, just wanted to feel important...
Better include this or your phone might come back with a voided warranty.

No. Flashing different roms jacks with your efs. A while back I decided to clean up my phone. Internal storage was a cluster. Just for the hell of it I decided to odin back to stock and master clear, then try the 2.2 kies update. Never had tried it. Well got the unregistered device thing and kies wouldn't update it. Found the thread above and downloaded hex editor and followed the instructions, edited my NV_DATA.BIN and reloaded stock jf6 and this time kies upgraded with no problems.
Flashing many different roms changes your product code even though SG tools said I had a sgh-I897, NV_DATA.BIN said I had something else.
When my cappy messed up, my imei got corrupted. Luckily I messed with around with sgs unlock a few months before and still had my back up and was able to restore it before turning it in. first thing I did with new cappy was back up efs. Product code was different also. Flash enough roms and it can mess up something as someone might be a novice coder and mess your device up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Edit: fixed Imei

Yes, I know. This Flash is not intended to mess with the /efs AT ALL, i have checked the package and it has no reference to /efs in the scripting. The post including the package also says this:
This package does not wipe:
EFS(Where your serial number and carrier information is stored)
Data(where your market apps are stored)
SDCard (where your pictures are stored)

So as you can see the number i have them call wipes the data and SD but they have their nandroid and SD backups. The number i have them call also doesnt touch the /efs. Trust me, I tested this method before i posted it and i didnt make an efs backup and my IMEI was perfectly fine afterward. I assume that nothing here messed with my /efs at all.
The only thing that would change the NVdata.bin would be an unlock tool. And i doubt that it even changes it.
OP was updated with more accurate steps.
LESSON LEARNT (for everyone): Please make sure to do a complete EFS backup before you do anything or you will end up like me!!!
So yeah I flashed Deodex_LF2_Cwm.zip yesterday, trying to deodex my DDFL2.
And following that I experienced total loss of mobile signal, baseband, IMEI, IMEI SV, and phone (*#1234#).
And I haven't been seeing this kinda thing to come, I did not back up EFS. (Yeah brilliant me)
So I tried a few of these:
[GUIDE] Recover your IMEI in 9 steps
Repair IMEI using EFS Pro
Reflashing from latona.pit then XXKPE; for a few times
Flashing stock ROM for Malaysia region (Froyo and GB)
Flashing various Modem.tar (DDLE1, DXKP7, etc) via Odin3 at different ROM levels (XXKPE, DDLF2, even CM10A4)
Restoring Nandroid backup from other SL user (Thanks Rich'Dawg')
But nothing worked so far yet.
Now that I checked the /efs folder is empty and there is only a folder named lost+found.
Some websites said about fixing IMEI for small fees but in cases of blank IMEI (*#06#), chances are only 30%.
And my last resort would be getting it replaced in Samsung service centre or any repair shop, which I suspect that the motherboard would be more expensive than some simple new Android phones.
Leaving this forum for the moment as to collect more money to get a new phone . . . :crying:
Lastly, thanks for all the input. Greatly appreciated.
Do you able to call anyone. ? if yes then no need to change anything. if no then you should search for imei solution on xda. there is some tutorial for fake imei.

no idea of how much it should be.
but a idea to help you,
1st idea:
go in recovery and fix permission.
2nd idea:
you said you flash Deodex LF2 in CWM, it should not touch efs folder. so, very high change of your nv_data.bin file backup still good.
OK. use any file browser look in the efs folder, see if the below file still exiting, (they are hidden file)
check on the file date. is the date older than the date you flash the zip, if yes, this is the one original from your phone.
the file name start with a dot
.nv_data.bak - ( this is your imei backup file) copy and rename the .nv_data.bak to nv_data.bin and set permission and change owner.
.nv_data.bak.md5 - (delete this file first)

Fixed permission.
I found one .nv_data.bak dated year 1994 , which I think came in when I was trying to flash some efs fixes i found in XDA.
Without much hope I tried what you said, but still nothing happened. IMEI blank, baseband unknown.
Is it possible to have the mobile phone repair shop with RIFF or Jtag or some box thingy to have this done?
i think you must change the motherboard

Mate, do you like JellyBam V.1.3.0? Because that's the only Nandroid backup i have in my phone. I was thinking to upload it to my Box account for Emergency Backup if i don't have my computer. If you like, i can upload it for you, but the size of the backup would be nuts, it's 850 MB. It's up to you.

a friend of mine ran through the same same problem and i think he did some sort of repair from a shop but later we came to know that the backup can do the task not sure whether that work or not but u can give it a try,, BEST of Luck with that..... Hopit Fix the Issue
Good luck sir! As far as I know, if you would choose to replace the motherboard from repair center, it would cost you more or less 80% of the original price of the phone. So it would seem that you have to buy a new one. I hope that a nandroid backup (as stated above) would solve the problem. God bless you! Think positive
i have the same problem and tried those solution the TS tested and still no luck, i wan't to try those nandroid backup but can't find any.

the problem is we can't find someone to lend us their nandroid backup.
I did it!
Bro, try use Efs Pro, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
Try the new version, you can choise Qualcom version, write you IMEI number, go back to initial and do NV Restore.
My SG Fit go back to life (after maybe 4 months with 0000000000000 Imei). :good:
I´m very happy
Hope it work for you! Good luck!
My i9103 lost its IMEI by itself (100% stock phone). I tried to fix it in some service shops, but they all failed. It's hardware problem, they say. Since I cannot contact samsung to repair my phone, I am using it as a "tablet", and I'm ok with that
However, since the phone is damaged, battery consumption is huge. "Cell standby" and "Dialer" consume most of the battery. For example, after 6 hours "Cell stanby" - 73%, "Dialer" - 7%, "Display" - 5%, "Phone idle" - 2%.
Now the phone is rooted, with stock 2.3.6 rom. Whatever I tried to flash, some stock or custom roms, the problem was the same. The phone is in "airplane" mode, but once activated it cannot be deactivated. Turning off the radio from the config fail.
Is there any possibility to disable (remove) those applications from the Android using terminal emulator on rooted device?
Thanks!

As I already said, I tried to flash all possible roms, wiping cache and everything was the number one in to-do list.
That is the main reason why I posted question here. Maybe somebody know something about system applications, and how to do some hocus-pocus witchcraft on a rooted device If the question was so simple, I would handle it myself, probably

Hi,
I'm looking for a few testers, preferably people who I have interacted in the past via IRC/forums. I finally have my app at a point where I think it's ready for Google Play, but I need to make sure that it works in a variety of roms and environments and that have a non-tmobile sim ready for testing for successful locks/unlocks.
Note that this can potentially leave your phone with a borked efs partition, which is why I want to test the efs backup/restore functionality first. If you are on ICS/JB you will be safer since the bml3 partition is still untouched. If anything goes severely wrong you can use a one-click back to GB which will also restore the untouched /efs partition after which you can flash back to ICS/JB to have a working /efs partition again.
I need people who can test the app using different GB/ICS/JB roms and give me feedback on whether the following works for them:
Does backup and restore work properly? (check /sdcard/efs_backup.tar for the backup, make sure by copying the file to your computer and opening it in an archive program such as 7-zip)
Try wiping /efs, verifying that the /efs partition is borked. After restoring a backup made with the Unlocker app and a reboot, does voice/data/text work again?
Do you get more than one superuser request while using the app in a single app launch (Ex: You launch the app, while using the app does a superuser request pop up more than once while using the app?)
Do you get an unlock code when you press the Get Unlock Code button?
Does the unlock code get saved to /sdcard/unlockcode.txt?
Does hex unlock work properly? (please test with a non-tmobile sim card)
Does hex lock work properly? (please test with a non-tmobile sim card, after re-locking your phone you should no longer be able to use data/voice/text while you have the non-tmobile sim card inserted)
Can you successfully use your phone on the non-tmobile card after unlock, lock, and unlock again?
Again, I'm looking for people who already know their way around the phone for testing. If you've never used adb shell before please don't bother replying.
Thank you in advance for your time.

Back when you first released this (if it is the same app) i used this to test on my phone. I believe i was using and GB rom and it worked perfectly. I can't vouch for any other roms or test right now, as i dont have another sim, but if i get one, I could probably test a few roms for you.
Please don't kill this thread with maybe's,coulds, ifs, and woulds...please show some respect and reply only if you "can" and "will" test.
Sorry FB if I'm stepping on your toes but its not right if your quest for testers gets filled with unheplful replies.
It's OK then. I won't have access to another sim until I go abroad in August.

Does backup and restore work properly? yes it did
1. Try wiping /efs, verifying that the /efs partition is borked. After restoring a backup made with the Unlocker app and a reboot, does voice/data/text work again? i never tested this function.
2. Do you get more than one superuser request while using the app in a single app launch? no i only got one request which was granted.
3. Do you get an unlock code when you press the Get Unlock Code button? yes but this unlock code wasn't unlocking my device, it seemed to be a issue with my device because i check and confirmed the code in hex editor so this should work with everyone else.
4. Does the unlock code get saved to /sdcard/unlockcode.txt? yes this indeed worked and i checked the file to make sure the code was there.
5. Does hex unlock work properly? this was the STUNNING PART! the hex editor was the only feature that unlocked my device! it saved my life because i only had 2 tries left and all i did was click "hex unlock" but the network never came up instantly i had to do an restart.
6.Does hex lock work properly? yes i relocked the device and placed Digicel sim in and it did not register
NB: i got an force close i think from the phone app not sure at which point in time but i dont think it was regarding to the unlocking app because it is perfect !
anything i left out please alert me.

Testing is over. You can now find the unlocking app in the Playstore and support this great Dev by paying the small fee.

Lumin is correct, I have released a stable version of the app. I also have two free unlock methods that aren't as straightforward to use, but still easier than editing the hex file by hand
Hey fb, I noticed Google play says the app was updated on the 14th. Did anything change?

It seems that every time I log into the developer console and check the stats it says the app gets updated :/.
I AM working on an update though, mostly UI stuff to make it more usable, but I've been having trouble getting my source code to compile. :/. Hopefully before the end of the summer
Still need testers?
