So I don't know what's just happened - I don't remember changing anything but as of yesterday, I can't hear anything in my calls, and they can't hear me. edit: There's no sound at all through the headset or speakerphone either.
Also the dialer has massive lag between number inputs.
What is causing it?? The phone is now no longer usable as a phone
I was running InsertCoin 3.3.8 and tried wiping, reflashing, restoring back to 3.3.7, and even tried going to MIUI! Still no luck.
Slight update on the issue:
I noticed that if I put the phone on silent, then the lag in dialer disappears. It's as if the phone is lagging because it can't find an audio output source.

My gTab is running VEGAn 5.1.1 w/supplement. If I play a mp4 and let the tab go to sleep, sometimes when I wake it the audio will be off (still on according to settings) or even worse there will be a repeating white noise. The only way I've found to get audio working again is to reboot. I've tried the stock player, ES video and Mplayer, same results. The tab is rock solid otherwise, no errors or fc's. Any ideas?
I have the same issue with my tablet running Vegan 5.1.1. It also happens sometimes just after you wake it up. I made sure last night that sound was working and this morning after wake from sleep I tested it right away and there was this horrible 'white noise' again (which can't be turned off even by muting and lasts for 5 seconds).
Search reveals some people having this problem, but I could not find a solution. I'd really like to know if it is a software or hardware issue so I can decide whether to send it back or not.
Would a reinstall of the rom help?
audio noise
I am running VEGAn GE 7.0.0 on two different gtabs and have experienced the same white noise issue described above. Occasionally when waking up I have experienced a blast of white noise from the speakers. Sometimes it stops on its own (after about 5 sec) other times I have to reboot.
Has anyone found a fix for this yet?
Both times, I go to bed and everything is working fine. I wake up in the morning and my phone loses audio. When I hit the volume buttons it shows the media volume instead of ringtone like something is playing but there's no sound. Playing music or anything doesn't have any audio. Only solution is to reboot the phone and it works again.
Very strange because both times it happened overnight while plugged in and charging. Otherwise the phone works perfectly fine so it's something screwing with the audio only.
Anybody else have this? This time it happened in the morning my phone had been up for 10 days so not sure if it's a memory leak or issue related to long uptime.

I've seen it as well, but not necessarily related to charging overnight. For me it seems related to using headphones. I think the muting doesn't always get unset when headphones are removed. The last time this happened I put headphones back in, which worked fine, and then the speaker worked once I removed the headphones. Rebooting also fixes it.
It's happened several times, so definitely seems like a bug. But it's intermittent so hard to pin down.
Happend To Me As Well
This has been the case with my phone as well. BUT I DON'T use headphones and it was NOT charging at the time. It just did it, all it took was a reboot to reset it. But it is annoying, along with the random resets/power-off and the Restart=power off bugs...
A known problem. I just reload Sense and it fixes.

How do you reload Sense?
Happened to me once. Rebooted to make it work.
doesn't happen to me after the OTA (1.35) but it's a known problem, if you're 1.35 and above then I suggest looking for incompatible apps, cause it should've been fixed with the 1.35 ota
This happened/happens to me after I quit the iheartradio app, both on 2.3.3 and 2.3.4. A reboot kicks the volume back to system volume.
I have a Nexus S 4g running slimbean official 7. It was been great for the last 3 months then for the last few days I have been losing my audio. It's just phone sounds and audio that doesn't work, notifications, and voice calls. Apps, games, slacker or other music apps seem to work fine. Sometime the audio will work for a little bit and then cut out. Like I can usually reboot the phone and the audio will work, but I will make a phone call and hear the 1st ring, then it will cut out and nothing else will work. I can test to see if the audio is working but just changing the volume and see if it makes the been letting you hear the volume level. Once or twice I can get it to start working for a bit by going back and forth between vibrate and ring, but most of the time that has no effect. I can't really tell what makes it work, and what makes it go out. It has been working great up until now, I really don't want to have to factory reset, I really wanna know what is causing this. One other thing is that it seems like several apps get really slow when the audio goes out, like the dialer app will hang and ask if i want to close it, but if you wait it always comes back, same with my launcher and sometimes the system settings if I am messing around in there, it also seems the volume slider is slow to respond when the sound isn't working, but very responsive if it is working. I haven't installed any new apps or made any changes that I know of since this started. I have tried killing and extra apps with no effect, and tried rebooting to recovery and clearing cache with no effect either. Sometimes you can reboot the phone just for the audio to work for a second or two before cutting out again.
Try greenify app and update slimbean. Make a nandroid backup first then restore via Nandroid Manager.
Download+Backup+Flash+Restore takes about 3 hours for me (i got many SMS).
My Nexus 5 microphone does not seem to be working while in calls. What is strange is it seems to work jsut fine when used in Skype, suggesting that this is a software issue. Also strange is that when I turn the microphone mute on/off during a call, I can hear that when the microphone is muted there is less fuzzy white noise. Has anyone encountered this issue? Is this a defective device? I've flashed this device with alternative ROMs, and now I've reflashed it with the factory stock ROM. But nothing changes the behavior that I've described.
I discovered another thread on this that seems related to what I am experiencing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538979
Have you done anything to the device other than ROM flashing (flashed kernel, MODs, etc)?

I think the answer to that question is no. I mean, I had also installed various apps and the like.

Yep, you have the problem many people have encountered with their Nexus 5. I occasionally have this issue. It isn't as bad as when I first got the phone, but the microphone does occasionally go wonky during a call (i.e. callers on the other line say I sound really far away from the phone). The first 2-3 weeks I had the phone people would say all they heard was static while using the microphone (not speakerphone). It works better now, but the static/distant sound persists at times.
The consensus suggests it seems to be a software related issue that Google has not addressed yet.
Woke up this morning to no sound coming from my Oneplus One.
Never experienced sound issues in the past before, when receiving a text or phonecall the sound works.
Its only when through the OS or apps such as Music, YouTube etc.
Tried re-flashing a Rom, clearing cache etc and still the same problem, as originally thought my little girl had changed some settings when messing around with the phone.
Is there anything else it could be or is the speaker screwed???
