Hello I am new to android I have had my HTC Incredible S for about 2 months and I have been reading on here for a while off and on about rooting and flashing custom roms onto my phone the only thing is is that from what I have read multiple things like that my phone can get bricked and be useless and it is also difficult to root the incredible s as well, I am just asking for people to tell me how likely I am to brick my phone and hopefully maybe some people could talk to me about flashing custom roms onto my phone and possibly link me some websites or possibly a video to show how to do this to my phone.
I would start here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980497
Also try searching here - http://www.google.com/cse?q=android...=ISO-8859-1#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=incredible s root
But next time I would suggest going to the specific forum for that device and, after reading through the sticky/roll up threads, ask the question there.

Thanks for the reply I wasn't totally sure where to post this thread so I posted just tried the general forum I will look there and maybe post there if I don't find what I'm looking for

trying to root my htc sprint hero 1.5 help
Hey man everyone started from the same spot your in. People on here are SUPER helpful, but easily get annoyed by people asking the same questions and not posting them in the right section. USE SEARCH! its your best friend, every question has been asked over 3 times. My advice, read everything on rooting (terminology, dangers, benefits, which type of root fits your needs, which ROM you want to flash) after a week or so on researching, find an RUU file in a thread. Then load that on your phone and follow the command prompt instructions carefully. Remember to use search, and rooting can brick, break, your phone. But the benefits of rooting are well worth It.

Go to the development section and look at the top posts(stickies), they have all the instructions there.

Upgrade to 2.1 first. Easier to root for me plus you're already upgraded then.

Hey dude, I'd recommend using this link right here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
It tells how to get your phone to the stock 2.1 and then how to root that.
If you read down through the first 2 or 3 posts, all the instructions are there and it's really hard to mess them up if you follow exactly what is typed.
You don't even HAVE to upgrade to 2.1, but I'd recommend doing it first.
If you don't want to mess with the link I included above, you can just root it from 1.5 like it is now using some of the one-click methods out there on the forum. If you go to the Development section of this HTC Hero forum and look around for any threads with ROOT in the title, you should be able to find anything you need.
Also check out the Take Control link down in my signature below -- it has a lot of helpful posts and info too.
Hello, I am a new HTC Sensation owner and it's my first Android phone too!
I am very excited with the device but, before I screw up something, I would like to know a bit more.
I know there is the possibility, for Android phones, to flash the ROM and install a new one with improved features.
It is something that I will do, I'm sure, but, as mentioned, I would like to be sure of what I do!
So, how can I back-up the current ROM, in order to restore everything as it was when I purchased the phone?
I know about an app called Titanium backup, but it seems that it requires root permission...
Can you help me?
Thank you in advance!

Htc sensation has a locked builder (S-On), you can't install custom roms yet till it is unlocked by HTC or hacked by developers. keep an eye out in the development section. When it is unlocked. Word will spread there,
Also there will be guides of how to root, s off back up etc. once it is unlocked
In the mean time. Have you tried rom manager from the market to backup. download it. Enjoy your sensation

Hi, before opening a thread do some research. If you did do some, you would have found an answer to your question in the Sensation Android development forum. There is a thread about someone who gotva Sensation with unlocked bootloader. Read in this thread as much as you can and please, on the top right of every single page of this forum is the SEARCH box. Use it extensively, you'll save yourself a lot of time.

no but you can read one of the many stickied guides, i charge for hand holding
simplest way , edit build.prop file , change that 2.3.6 or 2.3.7 or whatever you see , to 4.0.3 , you are now on 4.0.3 ,
What my fellow smart asses are trying to say is: don't worry, you are at the right place. Everything you need to find out about your phone is located here in this forum, but you need to do some reading in order to find it. What you are concerned with can be located in "stickies"- the threads at top of the forums which are indicated by the thumbtacks at the far left of the thread. Don't be discouraged by all the threads. What you are concerned with are only the stickies. It is in your best interest to devote the time to read through the first page of these stickies BC 1. You don't want to permanently damage your very expensive phone and 2. You will be amazed by what this little device can do once you've done a little homework.

First off please don't flame me, I've been on XDA for years an am by far not new to this. I know the procedures and I DID search and try to find these answers but am still a little confused so I would appreciate some help and I'd be very grateful please . I finally talked my buddy into getting an android phone and dropping iOS so he has the sensation and decided he wants to root and install custom Roms so I'm going to do so for him. He's on stock ICS and all the stickie threads for rooting I seen for the most part were last edited or not posted on since before the ICS update. I seen about the tool kit but just want to double check so I don't brick my buddies phone, could someone just link me to the newest method to root and flash recovery for flashing Roms for a phone on stock ICS? Once again my apologies as I know these noobie questions are annoying but my searching didn't help me . Thanks all!

The reason I'm posting is because its so complicated on HTC phones, Samsung is easy lol but I read the thread about how to do things but there's a million different things it talks about. It talks about s off and adb and all that, there doesn't seem to be a good guide in everything to do just to root and be able to flash custom Roms from straight stock from step one. Help please friend may be willing to donate after all said and done.

Hi,
Please check the ☺ A great starting point for all new Sensation owners ☺ link in my signature.
It has all the latest links to the threads you want.
Hey XDA.
I had another topic here but it seems better to make a new one? I left my charger in while updating and now my phone restarts itself randomly.
The update was to Sense Version 4.1
If I load a new Rom on will that help? Also do I need to have root to put a new Rom on or just the unlocked bootloader?
Thanks.

That's no use to me at all. Just pointing me to a random thread that has reall no details about my situation is no help at all.
If you actually had a look, it contains links to threads relevant to Telstra. One of them being this one , which tells you whether or not you need to root or just unlock bootloader in order to install a custom ROM. Which I believe answers your last question in OP.
Dunno why I'm even telling you that after you were so rude to someone trying to help you though.

By the way if you've already posted a thread about this question you shouldn't post another. Read the rules.

Methinks he is trying to get posts, so that he can post into the developers thread
Maybe reading posts that you are pointed to will actually help you. Sounds to me like you bricked it by updating it legitimately, then letting it run out of charge whilst updating.
You may be able to unbrick your phone by going the custom ROM way, but if you wish to retain your warranty, maybe you could ask your question in a HTC forum or even whirlpool.
I know I can unbrick my phone if I misflash mine because I have a custom recovery done with instructions in the thread link provided by timmaaa. I have no idea on how to unbrick a locked bootloader phone, but I am sure that HTC would have provided a way.
And READ before being rude to members, we post links for a reason, its not just fobbing you off. If everyone was answered on every thread, people would be busy just typing all day.
