[Guide] Best Way To Flash A Rom Without Having Problems - Samsung Infuse 4G

The best and easiest way to flash a rom without having any bugs or flaws, etc.
follow this to a 'tee' and you will have no problems, guarantee you.
Instructions:
1. Download .rar from link and extract it
http://www.multiupload.com/FO6TA6OBAH
2. open odin
3. put pda into the pda, phone into phone (their all in the respective folders)
4. let it finish wiping your phone and everything
5. once your phone boots, back up everything on your internal sd
6. go into settings and do a factory reset then let the phone reboot
7. put the rom you want to flash onto your sd card
8. turn off the phone and go into download mode (both volume buttons then plug in your usb cord.) flash gtg's community kernel. (in the root folder, put that .tar into the pda section) let it finish converting the partions.
9. once it finishes and boots up do this:
turn off phone, then:
using three button method. (volume up, volume down, power button. once you see samsung label release power button and keep holding volume buttons til you see your touch buttons light up, thats the way i figured out when to release them)
10. once the red screen appears, do: wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache
11. install zip from sd card, choose the rom that you placed onto your sd card

good job. works for me!

Which version of flashing stock does this use? Gtg unbrick?

Haha, the best way is NEVER using ODIN. Heimdall is much much better.
And why would you return to stock before every flash?

A clean slate. I use to do this all the time with my Captivate. Never had any problems installing any rom. Still do it now with the Infuse, and no problems installing any rom or Hellraiser Hybrid rom.

Never did it with the Captivate, never do it with the Infuse, never had any problems. You have a clean slate every time you flash a ROM as long as you wipe all the data and cache partitions. The system partitions are already overwritten with the flash itself. Basically going back to stock is just doing the same thing twice. Unless you are having some big problems and want to drop back to all stock files to see if you can fix a problem, it's generally unnecessary and just a waste of time. I mean, it doesn't hurt if you want to, it's just redundant.
All you gotta do is flash your ROM from Heimdall or CWM, wipe your data and cache partitions, boot up and you're done. As clean and fresh of a slate as it gets.

yeah i've always had a question about this... would you mind answering?
some instructions say to wipe data factory reset wipe cache before installing custom ROM,
some say after install wipe data factory and all that...
any difference? same? thanks!

I was once watching a youtube video on how to flash and he said something very simple, "wipe, fix, delete, get rid of, whatever. Old school rom flashing: make sure that you knock out everything so that you start on a fresh slate." Jordan is definitely right and knows much more than I. But I agree with AJerman that says its redundant. Just my two cents.

Jordan would you recommend using this method if you just got and rooted an infuse?
(have a warranty replacement on the way )

Using this method coming from Darky in an attempt to flash the FusionXII ROM, i recieved the message "installation aborted" after clockwork mod started and then ended the flash of the file. any advice? i cleared both data and dalvik in that order.
- Thanks

Odin back to Froyo, then Odin one of the gingerbread leaks, Odin entropys kernel, turn phone off and get into cwm and flash Fusion. Make sure to wipe data as well.

Nice guide, it should definitely alleviate lots of the questions around. I'd reccomend maybe flashing a rom with the gb loaders somewhere near the end so that theres no more rainbow issues.

Kernel Flashing Questions

Ok, sorry for the newb questions but this is the first time i am going to do something to any smartphone so there's somethings I don't understand.
1. Will I loose all of my data on my phone? I understand with flashing a new ROM i would but flashing a different kernel is different right? Also, what's the difference between a ROM and a kernel?
1b. If I will loose my data, is there anyway to back up some of that app data without being rooted? I know that once I am rooted I can use Titanium Backup.
2. Would you recommend using Odin to flash the Charge or something else? All of the instructions in the dev section say to use Odin but I've also seen some people say that you should use Heimdall and idk what that is. If you think I should use Odin, what version should i use?
3. Which kernel are you using and which one would you recommend.
4. If something goes wrong, you guys got my back right? lol
Thank you very much
1. No data loss.
2. Kernel is what the rom uses to operate in a sense. The kernel is what drives the phone, rom is what dresses it up.
3. I flash my kernels via cwm... but I use Odin for a lot as well. I use version 1.3 on my laptop and 1.7 on my gf's. Both do the same thing.
4. If you have problems people can help. Just read a lot before committing.
thanks for the reply.
actually, reading more into it, i think I want to flash the altered beast rom. with that there would be data loss right?

pretty sure when I flashed that it did wipe data.
I believe it doesn't touch data. It only has a system file no data or datadata

thanks for the replies. so basically, all i have to do is hook up to Odin and flash it and I'm done? I don't have to do a manual data wipe before I flash it correct?
I'm running stock non-rooted ED2 right now if that matters.

Lock Pattern Screen

Hi I have flashed my phone with a few roms and now that I have flashed any new rom and even whipped out and reformatted my sd card etc. I get the screen unlock pattern all the time.... even though all I have to do is swipe anywhere and not input a pattern unlock its really annoying!
Can anyone direct me on how I should go about this?
I currently flashed :
[Heimdall][One-Click][UVKJ6] The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection [12/11/2011]
But I want to clean it out completely and start all over without the worry of this unlock pattern!

Do a backup, perform a factory data reset, and you should be good to go. It's possible that clearing the cache & Davlik cache might work, but I'm not sure.

Weird. I had an issue like that after installing the initial Octane release. I think I might've flashed chadster's KG4 via ODIN afterward to clean it out as it flashes 4 different files (PIT, PDA, CSC, Phone).

Yeah, that's the one I personally always go back to that one to get a clean start. So far it's worked well for me.
As for what ROM, man, that's subjective I just read that Whitehawkx relased Valhalla Final. As for me I currently have Octane. I'd probably go to KG4, then stock KJ6, and maybe go to something custom from there. Others may have different ideas, though.

Try backing up your sd card and wiping it. Or use a different sdcard.
Everything on the phone gets reflashed. I have tested all three one clicks and have not experienced what you are saying.

To be fair, the one clicks, nor do any other method we tried (odin flashing, cwm falshing), reset EVERYTHING. The thread regarding incorrect time zones required a "hard reset" to get everything right again. Not sure if this should apply to this thread, but worth mentioning.

Do you mean that you see the lockscreen when booting for the first time after oneclick? It looks like a crappy low res lockscreen? If so, just enter your old pin/password. It wont ask again... Until you setup protected lockscreen again.
If not, and what you are trying now doesnt work, then could you rephrase the problem?

[Q] Phone did its own master reset... now I am determined to root

So every night before I go to bed I reboot my stock G2x so that it won't freeze and my alarm will hopefully work. Last night I did my usual reboot and when it turned on, it had done a master reset and everything was lost. So now I want to root it more than ever.
I have been reading a lot the last few weeks about rooting and I am still a little confused. Here are my issues: I have read two things about using Superoneclick and they are that it does work with 2.3 and that it doesn't work with 2.3. Then I have read the ref threads for rooting and they seem to go in circles. Also what kernel to use with which rom.
I am paranoid about bricking my phone so that is why I am (probably) reading too deep into the steps. I just have too many questions, sorry. And yes, I searched quite a bit... this might be my first post here, but its not my first forum.
Don't use superoneclick, NVFlash clockworkmod and install a custom ROM from there, just rooting won't help because then you're still on stock.
Install a CM7 based build, and if you want you can use a CM9 build but those are no where near finished.

You backup everything in cwm recovery and there are only really two kinds of kernels those for cm7 based and then stock based kernels the rom will tell you what it's based off of

Ok, ill help you out since your new here.
Step 1: Head over to lg's website and install the lg g2x drivers
:http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/G2X-Driver/index.jsp
(install tmobile lg g2x android usb driver)
Step 2 :
Install Clockworkmod recovery using nvflash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
To do so
Take out battery,
hold volume up and volume down and plug in the usb cable. Do not let go of these buttons until you complete the next step.
Start the nvflash program, and flash cwm 5.0.2.4.
Step 3 : Get a custom rom.
I reccomend the latest cm7 nightly for now, as cm9 is still unstable.
Download the latest nightly from here: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p999, and copy it over to your sd card
Step 4: Backup your current rom : turn off phone, boot while holding volume down and power button until clockworkmod appears. Use the volume keys to scoll down to backup/restore. Use power button to select it. Select backup.
step5) Go to clockworkmod, and hit install zip from.... Choose "choose zip from sd card". Navigate to the rom, and install it.
step6) Reboot and enjoy!

Wipe data factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik everytime will limit the chances of bugs. Some people wipe dalvik and cache only when updating from the same rom to avoid having to resetup their phones with apps and settings they like. But I always do all 3 wipes no matter what and the only issues I ever have are standard rom issues. Its always best to wipe. I see post after post of people claiming issues when they have not done a full wipe. Someone recommends to them to do a full wipe and that almost always fixes their issues.

Also, especially for your first flash, wipe system, or just get G2x scrubber (flashable zip) which does all of the above and saves you a few extra steps to go to in CWM.
I am doing this on a mac (but using Windows 7 since most of this is for windows) and I am having issues with the apx driver. It doesn't say "update" it just says no driver installed. Sounds like you're on the wrong tab. Go to the "Driver" tab. Start>right click My Computer>Properties>(on new window, on the left) Device Manager>(unknown device should be visible with either a red X or a yellow caution sign)double click on unknown device>left click on driver tab> select update driver or install driver (I forget the exact thing for unk device)>Browse My Computer>point to driver directory, the WHOLE APX driver folder, no sub folder.
I knew that i forgot about something!
Wipe all user data
Wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache.
*** i didn't mention installing the apx driver did i?
plug the phone in without a battery while holding volume up and volume down. Wait for the computer to search for a new device. Upon finding a new device, hit start, then search for "device manager". Open it. There will be an unknown device with a yellow question mark (APX device) next to it. Right click it, then hit update driver software. Hit "Let me choose", then browse to the folder of things you downloaded for nvflash.

Wipe system for good measure.
OK I couldn't wait until tomorrow so after a quick windows update (I never log in to Windows anymore) I tried it again and was able to update the apx. I booted in CWM and created a backup. Downloaded the newest nightly but haven't flashed it yet. How do I flash a kernel since it appears as though for the cm7 stuff I'll need a cm7 based kernel?
You do not have to flash a kernel, CM7 includes a kernel that is stable. If you want to overclock or undervolt there are other kernels as an option.
Don't forget the google apps http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110114-signed.zip
They are flashed from CWM recovery just like CM7
Grab either Morfic's, Faux123's, or Dragon G2x from the dev section and flash it in the same manner you flash a ROM. I would, personally, recommend flashing right after the ROM flash. Also, I think we all overlooked gapps! That's google apps, google it if you want to know why it's not included in the ROM. http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
Gapps gives you stuff like Market and the ability to add google accounts to your phone. Um, let's see, as IRASadPanda mentioned, yes do a full wipe which means either grab the G2x scrubber or manually go to Mounts and Storage and wipe System, Cache, and Data. You will also want to go to "Advanced" and wipe the Dalvik, the thing I am going ot do right after this is see if I can determine for sure if wiping data also wipes the Dalvik (I don't want opinions, please, I have plenty of my own). But just in case I'm wrong, wipe Dalvik. I think everything is covered at this point.

[Q] Tons of problems with my Charge, any help?

I recently bought a charge off of ebay and it came in and I noticed it had an Gmail account still synced with it.
Ok I thought, I'll just remove it. I go to remove the account and it says that "some apps require this account to remove this account you need to reset phone to factory defaults".
Alright so I go to do that and the phone reboots after I wiped data/cache and I go to add my account and realize that the other account is STILL THERE. So I do the wipe a few more times and still stays there.
By this time I figured I would root the phone and install CWM and try and wipe data that way. That still didn't work and I just started trying to get a stock rom back installed and finally I did. Except the ACCOUNT WAS STILL THERE, but now I'm getting a ton of FC's ranging from google apps to other processes. I've tried to install different rom's/CWM's/kernels in ODIN on my Window's laptop and I would alwasy just get the talking voice saying things like "converting data partition" and then it would just boot back into the stock but keep force closing.
I am now using my Macbook Pro on spring break and am trying to fix this using Heimdall but i've still had no luck. Is there anyone that can help me with this?

I recently bought a charge off of ebay and it came in and I noticed it had an Gmail account still synced with it.
Ok I thought, I'll just remove it. I go to remove the account and it says that "some apps require this account to remove this account you need to reset phone to factory defaults".
Alright so I go to do that and the phone reboots after I wiped data/cache and I go to add my account and realize that the other account is STILL THERE. So I do the wipe a few more times and still stays there.

Okay so it seems like you're sorta familiar with this kind of stuff so this shouldn't be too much trouble for you. You're going to need to go back to stock EP4D ROM and re-partition your device. Here is the link to where you can solve this problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486
You're going to have to use Odin (You're going to need Windows to run Odin) fit this because Heimdall just doesn't cut it and personally I've never used it. Get Odin 1.82, it works really well with the Charge. Download stock EP4D and also the charge.pit file from the posted link. Place stock EP4D md5 file in PDA in Odin and charge.pit in PIT. Make sure you have Re-Partition checked and Auto-Reboot and F.Reset Time UNCHECKED and press start. It will reconfigure everything and basically give you a brand new phone on the inside. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions just go back to the link to Imnuts' thread I posted.

Before I do that, which will be in a few days as I'm without a windows computer until at least wednesday. I am able to get into CWM. I installed a TweakStock but upon boot I get FC's like crazy. One after another continuously. I can't do anything. Is there anything I can do to get this working without using Odin? Thank you so much for your help as well.

No problem man I'm glad to help. If you want you can try a full data wipe. Boot into CWM and mount everything i.e. \system, \data, the whole nine yards and then wipe data/factory reset, and also wipe cache partitions and Dalvik cache. Then install whatever ROM you have available and see if that works. Otherwise you're SOL until you get a Windows computer and can Odin back to stock and re-partition everything.
EDIT: Just to clear something up, to mount everything scroll down to 'mounts and storage' in CWM.

Yeah, you need to run the pit file. Might be best to go back to original froyo + pit.

Froyo won't be necessary, just take the GB OTA file, the PIT, and use SamsungPST in bootcamp.

Make sure you Odin Tweakstock and flash cwm imosey kernel 4.0 (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/3426-kernel-gb-imoseyon-kernel-stock-repacked-v400-11611/ ) installed on your phone. Download and install "voodoo control app". In this app go into advance and put 2 checks in for ext4 settings, reboot your phone and report back the results.

It's actually not Voodoo Control anymore. Supercurio updated it to just Voodoo Sound.

This didn't work. I installed TweakStock and the kernel booted up and I got instant force closes that didn't allow me to do anything.
Did you ever try the first froyo build with pit?

Yes, I did. I've heard of "spamming the pit file". Does anyone know how to do this?

I think your partition is mess up due to ext4. I have an idea, why don't you flash the new CM9 ICS rom, this will auto reconvert yours to ext4. You have nothing to loose at this point. Make sure you MOUNT SYSTEM before flashing.

Good luck.

[Q] Totally erase phone

I am looking to do a new ROM on my phone and need to basically do a "format c:" to get rid of all the old app folders ect basically start totally from scratch is there a way to do this?
You mean something like format data, cache, dalvik, system and sdcard?

well I need to get rid of all the old application settings, folders, ect from all the apps/roms that I have installed. I have a TON of old folders on there that I don't know whether they are in use or not and to sum it up I guess i want to make the folder structure ect like it was when the phone was new.
Format everything andros11 mentioned. The /Data folder is where app stuff is kept so it will wipe it clean.

After you do the wipes, you can also use odin or heimdall to flash stock froyo or gb, whatever you prefer.

I did heimdal back to stock gb ukj4. now I have no Baseband ver. and it won't read my sim card. I've looked just about everywhere I can think of and have come up with barely anything, or I'm just completely missing something. Am I missing a Radio? Also I'm getting the Google Talk authentication failed message.

Not sure why people always ask there (somewhat unrelated) questions in other people threads...makes it harder to find the help you need cause people assume the only question asked is what's in the title...so by scrolling through threads I would never guess someone asked about heimdall problems, id assume it was strictly about erasing data on the phone...two unrelated things -atleast post your question in a thread that is about heindall problems or when heimdall goes bad...etc
Anyways...what heimdall did you use? Try running it again, don't close it when it finishes, check the box for bootloader and the do it once more (again don't close the program after the first heimdall flash...leave ot open)

How did you wipe out everything if you didn't have recovery? Just curious about that.
Sent from my SGH-i997 using xda premium
Well. I did have red recovery when I was wiping, then I started messing with flashing new roms and ended up soft bricking my phone. I had the sim card problem before, which led me to wiping and re-partitioning the sd card then using heimdal to get stock back on. I just need to know what I can do to try and figure out what is causing the problem. I was running Aeon with red recovery. I didn't care for it. I had more problems than I wanted.

Go to storage and format the internal and ext sd if you want as well then or you can do it in recovery by wiping phone.
