Wich is the best Android Tablet for gaming? - General Questions and Answers

Im looking fora Android tablet. And i want to use it as a gaming platform. So wich one has the best present/future game support? Im talking about Gameloft/etc.

I would go with either the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Asus Eee Pad Transformer w/dock.

I'll probably go with the galaxy tab, but then aging I haven't seen too much gaming development going on, so I would wait for the next google tablet (maybe some months from now) or get an iPad 2 (definitely good for gaming)
Sent from my iPhone 4S

All honeycomb tablets have the same graphic capabilities. Now which one is overall better? I think the transformer since you can use it as a lappy. But the galaxy tab 10.1 is a bit smoother thanks to samsung. The new galaxy tab 7" will have hardware better than the other tablets, but you will not be able to play some tegra games on it. e.g. monster madness, bang bang racing, GOF2, etc.
If however it is just pure gaming, the iPad2 is the best of them all, no contest.

The answer is obviously the Asus Prime. Comes out next month and is thinner than the Ipad 2 w the quad core tegra 3.

Having a better processor doesn't mean better gaming if developers don't use it, and when was this announced ?

True. An iPad 1 can easily beat the most powerful Android tablet in terms of gaming experience: it's not a matter of hardware, there aren't console quality games on Android, and imho we're not getting any in the near future: it's too complicated and expensive for developers to port the real games to Android, there are too many devices.

Well really all they need to do is make their games in standard openGL and then everyone will be able to play their games. Unless standard openGL just isn't say powerful enough to get the games we want. Well for a console games we're getting GTA 3. xD Wish we could get games like real racing or infinity blade.

No you're missing the point. He is saying that even though it has the power, we have to find devs who will sit down and code these powerful games for us. Which I think the devs who can are already into the console business, just need to convince them that the mobile business is profitable also.

Actually you're all dead wrong. Best tablet for gaming is the Sony tablet S. It actually DOES have console quality games. The full PlayStation online store. Everything the xperia play can do.

I have a transformer and love it but honestly at this point I'd wait for the quad core tablets to come out. Shouldn't be much longer. Although price wise the transformer for the money is a great deal in my opinion.

[23/05/12]Tegra 3 Vs A5 vs A5x

I've been looking at alot of material that suggests the Tegra 3 is weak compared to both the A5 as well as A5X,
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5163/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-nvidia-tegra-3-review/3
this shows some benchmarks between the prime and the ipad 2
edit 23/05/12:
after much debate I finally got the One X and decided benchmarks are not at all accurate with the difference being in software, OS, hardware, etc. being hard to actually benchmark universal and accurately.
after playing shadowgun, riptide and running plenty of apps, watching the beautiful smooth graphics and tegra 3 technology; who's to say which phone is better or worse, all that matters is that the htc one x performs excellent! and I look forward to more tegra 3 optimized apps and games.
already a thread with lot of information in it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544676

At least we know that the A5x is not "4x better than" the Tegra chip.
Look more like 20% than 4x. How can they lie like that?
thats weird, because this video shows it is just over 3 x as powerful ???
http://www.tuaw.com/2012/03/16/ipad-a5x-cpu-vs-asus-transformer-prime-tegra-3-cpu-benchmarks/
this is a benchmark of fps between transformer prime vs ipad3 in the gpu arena? am i missing something here? not sure if the tuaw are using the old linpack test which is stated on gizmodo as not being accurate so they didnt carry that one out???
" (Note: We planned to use the age-old Linpack standard test to evaluate CPU performance, but the Linpack apps for iOS and Android are very different, and their results could not be accurately compared.) " gizmodo - http://gizmodo.com/5893970/ipad-test-notes-speed-versus-tegra-3
im not sure like i said above if tuaw are using the old linpack standard test which could be giving false readings and showing the benchmark for ipad to be just over 3x as powerful as the tegra 3 which might be false benchmark figures,

Paid by apple I would assume.
stupid test IMO
i can agree that the a5x gpu is faster than the T3 but the numbers shown at the gl benchmark is totally biased !!
you need to remember that ANY app that is on the app store goes throgh an apple tech guy and is being optimized to the device before its published.
this is not the case with android market where anyone can put whatever they want , and most of the games/apps are not optimized for a single device (btw that is why apple devices are so good the software is optimized with that device)
i am an android dude myself but i do appreciate apple devices , but from a technological POV if the transformer prime were to be optimized with its os, gpu drivers, and games/apps it will be better than the """new ipad"""

Bull****.
Apple goes through the apps and checks that they work like they should. Apple doesn't tweak or optimize the apps.
The fact is that iOS is better optimized for the hardware it runs on, and since Apple makes both, it's not shocking that their products runs better.
The latest tests shows that the A5X wins at graphical processing while the Tegra 3 wins in calcualtions and memory handling .. and lately they discovered the processing of the A5X and the retina display makes the new iPad get hotter than the iPad 2 by 10 degrees

I thought Samsung made the hardware, well at least the processor?
ZDNet compared iPad3 and Transformer Prime
ZDNet is quite inconclusive, comparing two games, namely Shadowgun and riptide, in a Tegra3 and an A5X device. While the iPad3 has a little crispier colors and text display (thanks to its Retina display), the Prime displays some special graphics effects not to be seen on the iPad3 (yet). So in the end it depends on the other hardware components and the software optimization I guess..

Everyone needs something, doesn't mean they'll get it. Though I am on a G2x and believe the Tegra 2 out does the 4s, that iPad is powerful, if only we could slap android on that hoe.
And to people saying that iOS is better optimized for the hardware, you don't think companies just slap Android on these phones right? Some phones seem like it though which is what gives android a bad name for some. But then some custom ROMs come around and can fix a whole wave of problems for phones (especially my G2x).
Sadly though, I don't think NVidia will ever release Tegra 2 drivers for ICS G2x.

They won't release apps that have accurate benchmarks though and will show that their products aren't so revolutionary. I mean seriously, I like apple, but hate their "Somebody did it first but since we did it months later it's revolutionary," mindset.

Which device would have better graphic details in games comparatively .
for me i hate apple so android wins all the time like most things a name is just a name don't mean its beter
The ipad has a PowerVR SGX543 MP4 after all I read its way ahead of the Tegra 3 graphics.
Is dishing out the extra 300 worth it? IMO no. Tegra 3 is pretty capable even though it's not the bleeding edge in graphics.

graphics wise they are pretty close to be fair, but so much still comes down to the software with tablet gaming still (game devs have yet to get to what tegra 3 is truly about to do I feel).
And when the Nexus is atleast half the price of the iPad, has a better CPU and built with Jellybean the slickest android version yet, its a no brainer, get the nexus 7, get it now!

I would go for the newer Nexus 7, you will not only playing games with a tablet and so viewing a movie is better done on a Nexus 7 screen ratio.
The Nexus 7 has a 16/9 ratio also with Android you'll get more freedom, but with freedom comes the difficulty of choise.
I always say that Apple is like communism they " the company nows what best for you, with Android you'll get democracy this gives you more freedom but demands of course a little bit of effort from you
don't waste time go for nexus 7................:good::good::good::good::good::good::good:
Nexus 7 is faster and less expensive
The nexus's processor is better, but for gaming the iPad is probably better as it is perfectly optimized.

What apps arent available on tegra 3 yet? I've found that on my Prime everything is available on it vs my tf700. Even games were quickly available on Prime ie. Dark Knight, Wild Blood. Including EA games like Need for Speed Most wanted, Mass Effect 3. So I wo I wouldnt discount Tegra 4 just yet...

I totally agree but the issue I think are the devs. They tend to be lazy and only want to add support certain devices. A great example would be Prime and Nexus 7 which are Tegra 3 devices and have a lot of apps and games available for it. Gameloft and EA included. Tf700 does not. But if you side load the games, a lot of them will actually work. Less with EA games though. So for most its probably just adding tf700 as compatible in the play store.
Based on that I dont think it matters too much if you have Tegra 3, 4, 5 or 6 but more device model specific whether app will be available for it or not.

Whoa looks like the GPU will be running past the retina resolution with T4.
1440p video processor?...flat screen LCD TV's have just started showing up in this resolution.
Looks like the big deal with Tegra 4 is the smaller micron die that the processor is built on.
12 nm smaller less heat less power used.
Here we go with the next best thing

Has there been any ouya vs sheild talk?

I think the hard part is getting non PC people to have a PC, with a 650 or better nvidia GPU. And then you have PC people that just need an upgraded GPU. And is nvidia gonna do first party break the ice with a bunch of mini game or small and quick MMO or plan on setting up a special something for shield owners? And then you have people who don't really want the portability all that much and will likely buy the poor man's gaming console, the ouya, which should refressh it's hardware every year or two. And isn't nvudia inside the ouya to start off with? Nvidia could get something jumpstarted where the ouya would work in this equation somehow or be a host server for man, or all out line if the right components are there and up to the task.
my gnote2 is bigger than your puny iPhone.
I'm still not too sure about either, to be honest. My Asus Infinity with a Tegra 3, and a PS3 controller with the Sixaxis app, currently handles all of my Android gaming. The Tegra 4 will be in Android tablets soon, though I think the first tablet getting the Tegra 4 will be running Windows 8. I'm just not too sure, YET, if Project Glass will be worth the extra money...

The ouya has a tegra 3 at 1.3ghz. The Shield has a 1.9ghz tegra 4. Significantly more power.
The shield running stock android means it doesnt need to stream from a desktop PC. With the OUYA also being android based I reckon it would be a fairly easy port to get an OUYA game running on the shield, either with a port of the game code to the shield or possibly a modded OUYA SDK. Dependant on how much source code is available for the Shield roms and OUYA roms it might be possible to run an ouya rom on the shield.
Windows 8 wont run on a tegra 4. Namely because windows 8 is x86 only and tegra 4 is ARM.
Windows RT might but there have been no new windows RT devices announced so none with a tegra 4.
Only tegra 4 devices I know of right now are the shield, the HP splitbook x2 and the NVidia demo phone and demo tablets sold to manufacturers to sample what the tegra 4 and 4i can do.

The OUYA actually has a 1.9GHZ tegra 3 T33 processor (supposedly better than the T30L which is what youll find in devices like the Nexus 7, HTC one and Asus pads) The OUYA development tool (referred to by the developers as the ODK) is easily obtainable from their website. When you download it and install it (it's an apk) it boots you into the OUYA interface, acting like a launcher controlling it with my nexus 7's touch screen was clumsy and un productive and I didnt have access to the app store but I believe it would be quite easy to gain access. I also installed the play station mobile app on my nexus 7 but since it is not an officially licenced device with access to it it locked me out. This was fixed by flashing a package from custom recovery. No doubt the same applies to the ouya market.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Tetra 3 uses a cortex A9. Tetra 4 uses A15 which is about 50% faster at the same clock speed. So even with the ouya being 1.9ghz it still has less CPU power than the shield. Has a weaker GPU too.
Only points the ouya wins on are cost and dedicated developer support. There are probably more people hoping to make ouya specific apps than there are shield specific apps, a relatively minor point seeming as those apps should play nicely on either device anyway.
Ultimately you could still hook a shield up to a tv and pair a Bluetooth gamepad with it (maybe even an ouya one when they get around to selling them on their own) if you want a living room console, then unplug cable and go if you need a portable device. It just comes at a cost.
Wasn't contradicting your statement was merely correcting some misleading information.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
There is a lot of hope from both camps (Ouya and NVIDIA) that these "controller-based" products will really push for developers to support landscape-only devices and dedicated controller support. While Shield has the advantage of a touch screen available, both devices are really driving toward controller-only development.
I could see myself getting one of these. Not at launch but after a couple critical mass games and the one that gets more quality support for console like gaming. The ouya is potentially a GameCube successor and the shield has a lot of potential but are people really going to put their smart phones and tablets down for a dedicated but still portable console.

While I was previously interested in the OUYA for some hard core android gaming on a tv, I've kind of lost interest due to the fact that its model was meant to attract developers looking to make a name for themselves meaning small scale AA games. While there's nothing wrong with producing opportunity for new developers, it does mean that a good portion of the content will not be worth your time atleast in its early stages. The Nvidia Shield not only has the power to handle anythjng the market can pushout for atleast the next two years, the OUYA is packing hardware which is already outdated.

The ouya is supposedly getting new hardware every year. How they plan on doing that I don't know. It would be very nerdy and cool to unplug and drop a new SOC instead of buying the while console each time. And ouya seems to be off to a shaky start already with the controller and lag issues.

I think that is the way it will be, but if they designed it the right way it would be cool to just drop a new soc in and only have to buy a new ouya every 3 years or so. Upgrading just the hardware inside for $50 or so would be really cool on the wallet also.

what are you on about?
The ouya only breaks down into 4 components. Case, lid, motherboard and fan. Nothing is removable from the motherboard and its hardly worth keeping the case between upgrades (besides, case has negligible financial impact). Only way you can upgrade the ouya is swap the entire motherboard in one go, or basically just buying a new ouya.
Swappable SoC's won't work as ARM chips don't maintain a standard pin out. To swap from a tegra 3 to a tegra 4 even requires a new motherboard. Workaround is to use a computer-on-module but that would not be effective for the ouya. Drivers for different SoCs are all different too. There is no feasible way to switch between SoCs in the ouya.
Just expect new hardware revisions every year or 2 instead.
Until then. Ouya VS shield. Ouya only really wins out for cost and size, and its not as if the shield is big. Ouya apps can probably eventually be coerced into running on the shield and ouya controllers would also work with the shield. Shield is more powerful, more portable. Only thing the ouya has and shield doesn't is the touchpad on the controller (exposes itself as a Bluetooth mouse so there is one workaround, or pair an ouya controller with the shield, or emulate it on the shield touch screen).
I believe the upgrade path for an Ouya would be to keep your old controllers, and just get the base unit.

I love the idea of Ouya, but with the Xbox One and PS4 coming out in the fall I don't see a need for it.
The shield wins for me because I love the idea that I can play my PC games anywhere in the house or even the backyard. I love the idea of being able to use it like any other Android device. I love the portability and the power that the shield offers and I love that I can actually plug the shield into any TV im play those games right to it. If I wasn't such a big Xbox gamer and just wanted something cheap to play then I would consider the Ouya, but that's not the case and I have been looking for something that's portable with counsel quality gaming for a while now and the PC streaming is just a huge bonus for me.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
The shield does seem to have a more serious gamer allure but at a higher cost. The ouya would get the all around enthusiast gamer and would be much better suited for family or friend fun. Though I don't see why the shield couldn't support multiplayer from one shield output to a TV. I am not a serious gamer anymore but the Xbox one probably won't ever be in my living room if they really do undermine the second hand market like that. Probably the same for the ps4 if they decide to go ahead and do it. Still very interested in getting a ps4 in a couple of years when ps3 starts to show it's age in blue ray movies. The ouya might pique my interest in the meantime if they have some meaningful games.

More like tablet (singular)

Is it worth it

Hi all i wont to buy Galaxy Note 10.1 and i wont to ask is it worth it i am a gamer and i wont to play this HD games and Order and Chaos can it hold it on high graph.. and what is bad and good in this Galaxy Note 10.1
If you are mostly interested in playing games then I'd look at other tabs...
The main feature of the Note 10.1 is the s-pen. It is good for school work and business but if you want to play HD games there are other cheaper alternatives....
I use mine to watch video's and movies too and find no problem but utilise the s-pen for a variety of things. If I didn't need the s-pen and the phone functions then I would have looked at cheaper alternatives..

I would recommend going to a Best Buy if there is one near you and comparing the Note 10.1 to other tablets. The Note 10.1 is undoubtedly an awesome tablet! I considered buying one myself for a while. I have also considered a Nexus 10, as it's another great choice! With that said, I chose the Asus Infinity over the Note 10.1. I bought it before the Nexus 10 came out, but considered buying the Nexus 10 as well, and then possibly selling my Asus Infinity. I did my research on the two, and chose not to get the Nexus 10. I'm very happy with my Infinity!! I had the Asus Prime before the Infinity, and I feel like Asus makes outstanding tablets! Asus makes awesome phones too for that matter. I actually wish Sprint offered the Asus PadFone 2, as that would no doubt be my current phone!! Asus is also among the first, if not the first, manufacturers to release software updates for their products! The display on the Infinity is full HD and absolutely gorgeous! Not I, or anyone else, can tell you what tablet to get, only you can decide what tablet suits you the best! Just make sure to do your research on them first to see what's gonna work best for you. Check out YouTube videos as well! Also, if flashing is something your gonna be doing, be sure to check out their forums here on XDA and see which developers are cooking for which devices. See what rom and kernel options are out there, as well as themes and mods. Just all boils down to what your needs are, what your wants are, and what you will ultimately using the device for! Either way, good luck with your decision, and I hope you enjoy whatever you get!!
EDIT: FOR GAMING: I can tell you first hand that the Infinity is a beast!! Dead Trigger with the Sixaxis app and a PS3 controller is awesome(just to name 1 game, which is my favorite)!! Even though I have an XBOX 360 and a PS3, I often hook up my Infinity with its HDMI port built in to the side of the tablet, and play on my 55" Sony LED TV! It's absolutely amazing!! If anyone walks in the room, they never believe that I'm playing from my tablet and not a console!! I play Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, Horn, ShadowGun THD, ShadowGun: DeadZone, Modern Combat 4, Max Payne, NOVA 3, Asphalt 7, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Sonic 4 THD, Beach Buggy Blitz, Shine Runner, and on and on, etc. etc. They all look and play amazingly well on the Infinity!! I don't even play Most Wanted on my Evo LTE anymore, only on my Infinity! I expected the tilt steering to be awkward and cumbersome on a 10" tablet compared to my 4.7" Evo LTE, and just assumed I would use the touch screen for steering. I was pleasantly surprised when I first tried it and found that tilt steering was actually better on my tablet than on my phone!!

I had an Asus Infinity and hated the thing, the lag was unbearable, and that was running a custom rom which was an improvement. Gaming was good, and the hdmi out was a plus but not used very much. Also there are some games that are not compatible with it due to resolution. The note although lower resolution is so much snappier. I would definitely not recommend any of the Asus tablets.
In total agreement, I will never purchase another Asus tablet. The Prime was the worst technology buying experience I have ever had. Never again...NEVER!

So far so good I have been running most high end games without lags. I would say am pretty much satisfied with its gaming performance.

If gaming is your main concern wait a little for the new nexus 7 device should be out in two months or so, nexus devices seem to perform well when it comes to gaming
