Messed up flashing - Captivate General

I was attempting to flash back to stock (2.2) using odin3 1.85 but I messed up and now my phone goes to the phone yield PC screen.
I can get into download mode, but odin one click doesn't do anything besides "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)" after clicking start. All the boxes are blank though..
Am I completely screwed here?

As long as you can get into download mode, you are not completely screwed. Open up odin 1 click first and then plug it in. I would use a different USB port. I screwed up once by placing and flashing an infuse rom on a captivate but odin 1 click to jf6 worked for me. Another time I got that phone yield computer screen too, created a jig and flashed to jf6, master clear and reflashed.

Ok, I've been reading over various threads and a lot of them say they have to keep trying to get it to work so I guess I'll keep doing that.
Thanks for the reply, makes me feel better
And I fixed it

once upon a time I flashed t mobile vibrant firmware onto a bell vibrant. instant gg, cst me 100$ at the local phone store to fix. ha ha

Messed up flashing .. cannot get to download
I have a similar and may be a worse problem.
I started out with a perfectly fine factory installed Captivate Froyo 2.2 UCKB2.
I tried flashing using Adam Outler's Heimdal install for Gingerbread 2.3.4.(UCKH3).
Everything was fine until I actually started the flash .. it went on to copy the pit file but spat out an error Loading the Kernel. And now I have a Phone--!--PC no matter what I do.
I tried the button combo, the button+USB combo, the button+usb+battery combo, the adb reboot download thing, but to no avail.
Have not tried any of the "Jigs" yet. Nor have tried the Unbrickable Mod (skilled soldering on the board is a little too much for me). Don't want to deal in hardware unless absolutely necessary.
Any help in getting me to download mode is really appreciated.
EDIT:
WOW ... I was never able to get into a download mode, I connected the phone to the PC with the right drivers, ODIN3 was able to detect the device, Hiemdall was also able to detect the device connected, so I went on to flash the phone with Hiemdall (even though it was not in the download mode [still showed phone--!--pc] ) AND IT WORKED ... I WAS ABLE TO FLASH SUCCESSFULLY .. I am on Gingerbread 2.3.4 now ... !! Flashed without the bootloaders ! Thought I should share it with all ... !!

The phone--!--PC screen is (in a sense) download mode. Just try flashing again from that screen.

Thank you JMTheiss

I did just that and it worked great... Thanks .. although I did it before I saw your post.. I tried it out since ODIN3 and Hiemdall were both "seeing" the device connected and I thought it was worth a shot.
Thank you for the comment though, I would have definitely returned here had it not occurred to me.

unrecoverable soft brick even with USB JIG

so yeah i got my first replacement after the first time this happened... i tried flashing krylon360's rom with odin but got a fail at factory.rfs. keep in mind i am in no way shape or form a noob with odin, i have brought many of my buddies' devices back to life, but for some reason even though i use a USB jig ( which works in my captivate and personally tested and working on the SGS4g before the unrecoverable soft brick) any help please i dont want to have to send it back to t-mobile again... they already charge 10bucks just for shipping.

Hmm I'd say if the USB jig didn't work, you're not soft bricked. That's a hard brick.
What kind of USB jig are you using?
Was it a ROM or a kernel you flashed? which one, version etc.?

donation rewards for anybody that can help! lol this is depressing, my old captivate isnt this sensitive and has been through hell and back, but this SGS4g.... im dissappointed in.
Uninstall all the drivers for the phone make sure you have the right ones also, and try plugging it into a usb 2.0 slot then run it again, this seemed to work for me. I ran into the same issue I plugged in my jig but it gave me a black screen, but odin recognized it and I flashedthe kd1 update and it was fixed. Hope this helps

If the computer is not recognizing the phone being plugged in, how is ODIN going to be able to process? I don't know if mine SGS4G is irrepairable but when I plug it in to the computer, it will not even show up on device manager. The drivers have been installed in the past and I have used ODIN before.
When I try using ODIN now it won't work since it won't recognize the phone.
I have used JIG and simply will not buzz. It's pretty much as dead as if the phone is not even on.
Any help guys??

If its currently in the state which I'm assuming..
-won't turn on, no sign of life period...
-plugging it in the wall charger won't even show the green battery status...
-won't get recognized when plugged into pc (or odin)...
-all combinations of buttons and battery pulling+usb cable plugging does nothing...
Yea I think its safe to say it went to a land far far away just like my friend's phone and only Samsung can revive it now.. Because I remember reading all the stories how everyone brought theres back to life so easily with the button combos or the jig usage, but those phones all at least showed a sign of life with that cable screen. But if its pitch black like I'm assuming then...
Same here. The jig didn't seem to work - I still got the cell + comp but odin worked anyway and reflashed stock. It's probably better to run Odin off a desktop if you have one.
That screen scared the holy hell out of me a couple of days ago. I ended up having to re-install the samsung drivers for windows 7 and then odin picked the phone right up. The reason I *knew* the phone was recoverable from that screen was simple, though:
I read the screen. It wouldn't be telling you to try something in Kies if you couldn't do anything at that screen. So, I just kept ****ing around trying different things until it worked.
*I* have personally noticed that that screen tends to come up when you accidentally or inadvertently select "Re-Partition" on a rom/image that's not setup for it, or if for any reason your phone gets disconnected or powered off during the flashing process.

I second this. I have been running into this screen while trying to install root from the 2.3.4 leak. I have had black screen, fuzzy screen, random pixel screen. In most cases I have been able recognize the phone using odin. A few of the key steps that I have used to get the phone recognizable in odin are:
1. If the computer says "usb not recognized" when initially plugging in the phone, uplug it and plug it back in. Most of the time when I do this the phone is recognized as samsung device.
1b: If odin now recognizes the phone after running through step 1 I will try to flash the files again. it will usually fail after trying to load the flash files on the first try. I have to mess around with this process a few times and I can usually get a successful flash.
2. I had an case when having to deal with this problem yesterday. I was running through steps 1,1b and not having success. Odin was hanging, (I forget which step). I let it sit for about 10 minutes and was still hanging. I unplugged the phone with odin still hanging pulled battery, powered on, plugged back in. Odin, which was still open and still trying to connect, continued its already started process after plugging it back in!!! This was an accident to still have the odin running and trying to connect, but after reconnecting the phone it successfully flashed!

These kind of observations are especially helpful! I can concur that I get the same <phone..!..pc> error, when odin tries to flash and gets a write fail, however, I do not have the "re-partition" option set. I then have to run through my previously mentioned steps to try to get a successful flash.
My question is what can i do to keep odin from failing to write when flashing?? I have only been using PDA packages, with the exception of using discrete packages (pit, csc, phone, pda) when loading the 2.3.4 rom leak.
It seems like the flashing write error in odin in causing the <phone..!..pc> error quite often with different flash processes. Does anyone have a solution to what might be causing this write error and what can be done to prevent this whole cycle? If so I sticky or new thread might be useful for other users. It has caused to have to warranty my first phone, urrrg!
Scariest feeling ever........ Not seeing your phone come up on Odin.

I had the same issue yesterday, when I tried to flash KD1 vanilla (stock) ROM
using ODIN, it failed the first 4 seconds, it boots into fuzzy looking screen and
that's it, every time I tried to boot it the fuzzy screen fades away to pitch black.
there is 2 possibilities that messed up the whole thing for me:
1) Bad ROM.. (i.e, can't be used with ODIN) although some members said it works
but don't know if there anything special to do before hand, if I want to downgrade.
2) Samsung Kies' fault, I installed just right before I used ODIN, and told me my
device is not registered.. hmm.
It could be both cases, but I suspect Kies the culprit, I had to uninstall it, and
uninstall the drivers came with it, installed the drivers found here in these forums,
and Odin recognized a COM port, although black screen on the phone, flashed
to KH1 and I am back to business. phew..
GB is awesome, but I can't stand the weak WIFI issue even with the latest KH1
I have to stand 3 feet away from my router to get a solid signal, with froyo
vanilla rom, I was able to connect like 50 feet away. but that's another problem
not for this thread.
Heh funny thing I read today in some thread, there is a conflict between Kies and
Odin after the incident happened. my fault for not reading a lot, jumping the gun
almost cost me the phone :/

Bricked... Read nearly every post available.

Is it possible to perm brick your phone? My phone got stuck somewhere in the middle of an Odin flash and I had to pull the plug. Since then I have been stuck at the "Phone...!....Computer" picture.
I can get the downloading "Do not turn off Target!!!" section with the cable plugged in and no battery. I also have it recognized by Samsung PSLite, but when I'm trying to flash the stock rom back on through PSLite it disconnects as soon as it goes to 0%.
Will it make a difference that I have Win7 64bit and the VIA drivers say 32bit on them? I'm pretty sure I have every other driver that's needed.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I'm a sad panda without my new phone :-(
Go to the dev section of this forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14147928&postcount=3
Follows these directions exactly. Will recovery your phone for you.
Good part is, you are not bricked.
Yeah, I've been following a couple of forums that all show nearly the exact same directions. Been getting stuck on the same area...
I have very little knowledge of any of this other than following instructions (obviously not that well) but something tells me it has to be a driver issue.
The VIA drivers I installed say 32bit and my machine is Win7 64. Also, when I plug the phone in it is recognized by my computer with no errors. Once I start the install and it gets to "VIA download" I get the error - then my computer tells me the device was not recognized. I have to do a full reboot to get my computer to recognize my phone again.
Thanks for the directions
Hey man, if that isnt working for you (which I dont see how.) You can always call tech support and say your phone is not booting, even after you pull the battery out. Just say it stays stuck on the samsung screen. They will send out a new phone. Just saying but it should work regardless. Also try another USB port, see if that solves your issue and make sure you are using the OEM usb cable.
I'm assuming this will work for you. It did for me. I had the same screen.
Download first file.
Odin 1.82
Open Odin then hook up your phone and put into download mode with the battery out. Crucial part here. Put the battery back in. After flash the first file I linked you to but make sure you check the PDA option and do it through PDA only.
Should fix it I do believe.
If you follow that exactly like is says. from start to finish. forgetting that you have ever tried anything before. And still follow it. You will be fine. download everything it says download, and follow the instructions exactly.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone.
I've been trying everything suggested on here except getting a newer version of Odin. When I get in tonight I'll keep trucking along with different tweeks.
The good news is I accepted defeat (Grrr!) and have a warranty replacement on the way. It kills me that I couldn't get this on my own.
I've even installed everything on my laptop with the exact same results. As soon as I get to the downloading portion where it shows 0% the phone disconnects and my computer tells me it is no longer recognized. This was in PSLite. Odin simply says FAIL when I try to flash that method.
I have a week to return the first phone. I'll use that time to get all my drivers in order and get this figured out.
After you put the phone into download mode when it was hooked up to the computer did you put the battery back in? I had the same screen as you and when I tried to use Odin it would just say it failed every time. Put the battery back into your phone after it is in download mode before you try to flash with Odin.
Also for PSLite I had to plug in the phone (in download mode) before starting PSLite (opposite of ODIN).
Odin... OdinOdinOdinOdin!
That was my problem. I was using silly PSLite instead of Odin.
Thanks again everyone for the help! Now to see if I can break her again...

Actually PSLite worked for me and not ODIN, but for others ODIN worked. I guess it is good to try both. Too bad both seems so flaky! Rooting on the OG droid was a breeze compared to the charge. The OG droid was indescructible.

Then go back to the OG Droid. It takes literally 10 min to root a Droid Charge. If you follow the instructions like we tell you to, its not hard at all.

I agree rooting was really easy. Several people have had issues where they needed to restore using and ODIN and it complete fails (this is after using ODIN successfully to flash ROMS, recovery, kernels). See the end of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108115
You can blame it on user error, but I can assure you that I didn't do anything that should have caused my /data partiion to not mount. Sometimes things happen and the last thing you want is ODIN failing to flash when you have a brick on your hands.
Hope you fix your phone :] It always pains me to see one of these posts where someone has a bootloop or even a dreadful brick.

[Q] Can Someone Help? I'm Stuck In Recovery<3e>

I hope there is a way for me to fix this. I am a noob but, I have been successful flashing things a few times in the past (and not so lucky a few times). This time I had flashed my Infuse back to stock 2.2 Froyo UCKD5 after having Zues w/ Aries HellFire running for a couple weeks. I decided to try another ROM because I was bored. Then I screwed something up thinking I knew more than I do. As I was trying to clean things up in my files to get ready to do a back-up,something happened and about half of my apps, factory and 3rd party had no files or ?? They didn't show any MB in cache / data,in TIBU or App Mgr, only "computing...", and obviously things didn't work right. So I hit the phone's Factory Reset, went into Odin3 thinking I would try doing something I never tried before, stupid me, and installed through the PDA button, zimage root tar file, success, saw the Fugu fish and then reset Odin, turned off/ on. Pulled battery from phone, usb jig to download mode, because three button method wasn't working. I thought it had something to do with the residual kernel or bootloader from Zeus. The kernel that was running is 2.6.32.9 and I don't know what that is. Any way I thought I would install KF1 .tar Odin3 installed it but it got stuck on the Samsung power-up screen, black background white Samsung letters. I usb jigged into download mode , thinking maybe I had the wrong drivers possibly and did the Heimdall Zadig driver install, nothing changed. So, I thought that I better just reflash to stock using GTG's Ultimate Unbrick, used the UCKD5 tar and it passed. Then I unplugged the phone when it shut off to reboot, it booted into blue recovery and I hit reboot and it came right back into blue recovery. I am able to get into download mode or into the ever looping blue recovery<3e>,but nothing else. No programs,Odin, Kies, Heimdall,GTG's, recognize the phone, the laptop does and says the device may not work correctly..., but I did notice what the fails were in the recovery boot-up. So I snapped pics with my Captivate and uploaded them and I will paste them here (I think XDA lets idiots like me paste in this area?). they are readable, but if I need to type everything out I can, but not until someone asks so as to keep this already lengthy story a bit shorter. Did you try clicking flash in Heimdall, sometimes it looks like it doesn't see the phone, but you click flash and it works. Also, have you tried clearing user data and cache? (I know you said you had factory reset at one point but now that you are stuck might be worth a try.) Looks like a boot loader issue, not sure why Heimdall doesn't see the phone, I've had good luck in the past with it.
I'm tempted to tell you to format the internal sd and try heimdall again, but maybe someone with more experience would have a better idea.

Put your phone in download mode. Odin or heimdall back to stock and start over.
Don't worry about anything else as long as you can get into dl mode
Hey, thanks for responding. I know the difference b/t recov. and dload. I am stuck in recovery<3e> blue, it just returns the recovery screen no matter if I press reboot, clear cache, or clear data, or try install zip. But if I usb jig it, it goes into download mode. Thats it. What I have and don't know what or how to fix is during the reboot attempt (you can read it if you click on my screenshots) it says Checksum Fail, Movinand Fail, and lfs undone. I'm gonna try to find out more about those files ( I guess thats what those would be ???) Thanks Bro.

You borked something in the ROM. That's why it won't boot. Files mismatch and don't add up. That's why you're in blue recovery.
You've to get into dl mode and flash a stock ROM img. Then start over.

Just to add this to what qkster said! I know you said you know the difference but be sure to have proper drivers installed I personally used GTG’s Ultimate Unbrick with 100% success. If there is any doubt about bad drivers I would also suggest reinstalling them there is a very easy to use Utility called usbdeview that lets you uninstall drivers and start fresh.

No clue what I did

Hey everyone, I tried looking around but didn't see anything else like this, most people at least have access to the download mode, unlike me. I was installing UNiPoRN and CWM kept freezing for some reason during flashing, so I used Odin to try to flash UCKD5 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021 But it kept failing for some reason, and this last time when I went to put my phone into download, I get a single green pixel towards the bottom right of the screen, no download mode nothing, how ever my computer recognizes that my phone was attached. When I try to turn on the phone normally, I have a diagonal row of green dots, but nothing like the rainbow effect. Does anyone have any clue whats wrong and what I can do to fix it? Let me know if you need more information!!
Thanks thanks thanks in advance!!

When I try to turn on the phone normally, I have a diagonal row of green dots, but nothing like the rainbow effect. Does anyone have any clue whats wrong and what I can do to fix it? Let me know if you need more information!!
Thanks thanks thanks in advance!!

Try the one click method, if your computer recongnizes then that is good...try these links and there is a new odin, well has the updated Gingerbread.
see my signature links to ISET page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610374
but here are the links to look for one click:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
newer odin:

Yes, as mentioned from bigjoe2675 use the newer up-to-date Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705260 And flash the GB Bootloaders afterwards to fix the Rainbow distortion on the boot screen.
2.) I have rainbow distortion in recovery or in the boot animation. How can I get Gingerbread bootloaders to fix this?:
If you have rainbow distortion, you still have Froyo bootloaders. You can download THIS .rar file, extract using 7zip, and flash the tar.md5 package in Odin (use the pda slot). Flashing Gingerbread bootloaders will correct rainbow distortion in recovery and in the boot animation. Only flash these if you are having issues with rainbow distortion, and only if you have had success flashing other, less dangerous items in Odin.

I tried the one click, and it says kernel upload failed. And as for the pixels, I know what the rainbow looks like, I had it when I first installed ICS, however this is not the same thing (at least I don't think so, it looks nothing like it)

Checklist...
1) try a new download, sometimes files get corrupt..
2) try new USB port..
3) have a beer
4) install or uninstall kies drivers...then try new gb odin
5) have another beer...
As far as the pixel...not sure did you do it at at time?
Make sure you flash the bootloader after you had success with the restore to correct the "pixels" which I had before a couple of times. The random pixels are the corrupted bootloaders (I think) which should be corrected by flashing the proper one (GB Bootloaders)

I kinda had a similar problem earlier when I was trying to install legend 4 rom. My phone would flash a boot, then nada. No button combo's worked, nothing. I got the idea to pull the battery, and I achieved the same results upon power up (glimpse, freeze, no button reaction). So, I pulled my battery again, held the volume rockers and got into download mode. Once I did that, I used Odin to go back to stock GB.

kies update bricked my aunts phone

I have already used kies once to upgrade my sgh-i727's firmware to ICS. Anyways my aunt asked if i would do hers for her. I ran kies but after the firmware install had started I got an error message asking me to unplug my phone and boot in to recovery mode. However I can only get the phone to boot into odin mode. Either by turning it on normally i get the error:
odin mode
product name: sgh-727
custom binary download: no
current binary: samsung official
firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies & try again.
Or i can boot in to normal odin mode holding the volume up and down keys while plugging the usb port in. Then I choose volume up to load custom rom i end up at the same error.
I did try endlessly booting into recovery mode holding the volume up and down keys while powering on (also tried just up and just down to ensure i wasn't crazy) and while samsung flashes super briefly i again end up in odin mode with the error message. I tried flashing a stock ICS and gingerbread roms via odin 1.85 but it fails saying there is no pit file. I have searched for a pit file to load but have been unable to find one, in fact I noticed I was not the only one unable to locate one for this model phone.
Even without recovery mode I still did try to do a emergency firmware recovery in odin mode (rather sure it wouldn't work but what the heck) to no avail. I am at a total loss. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this brick aside from haveing her exchange it with ATT? It is only two days old so that is a possibility if worse comes to worse.
I have scoured the forums, Google and everything else I could think of before asking for help so please don't thrash me if i missed something. some help and a point in the right direction is all i ask. thanks!

New to the boards; however, I must say THANK YOU to the persons who own and operate these boards. Also a BIG THANK YOU to vincom and everyone else who helps on these boards.
I just went through the exact same dilemma that the person who created this post did. I thought for sure Kies ruined my phone.
Well I used vincom's resolution and my phone is working again AND I have ICS! Thank you!
Those who are saying thanks should click thanks on Vincom's post as well. Sending one his way for you...lol.
