Internet speed results Q&A - Samsung Infuse 4G

Can anyone here go into detail with what they've done to get their speed results. I read someone achieving 14.4 Mbps down with CM7 so I went to try it and flashed J1 modem with it and got maximum download of 8.22Mbps but its so irratic from 2Mbps to 8.22Mbps its not reliable.
Pretty much I just want to know what ROM, tweaks, modem, signal strength, GPS lock, and download speed. Also note your market area so we know if your speed sucks due to being in the middle of no where with 1 tower 12 miles away.
Note time you ran the speed test if you don't have a screenshot so I can check to see if a tower was jacked up in your market that could cause the speed issue.
ROM: CM7.1 Unofficial Build
MODEM: UCKJ1
TWEAKS: Nothing
DOWNLOAD: 8.22 Mbps 6 PM
GPS: Don't lock at all
SINGAL: Full signal pretty much everywhere.

Never got above 1Mbps down... Never even got a measurable upload result (it takes FOREVER to upload a picture to facebook).

Don't habe anything to screenshot my phone. In Oklahoma, I average 4 Mbps, but can get 6 in some areas of OKC.
A few weeks ago, I drove to San Antonio and got 10 Mbps in Dallas and 12 Mbps in San Antonio. I am stock and using the Speedtest app for results.

I've wondered as well. I've consistently gotten just about 1.3mb down and about 200kb up no matter what ROM, modem, etc and no matter where I go.
I think I have it narrowed down to two issues:
1. I had previously read a suggestion to change the HSPA cat levels by dialing *#1010#. I had changed them to 8 for down and 0 for up because it seemed like it improved my signal in a certain poor signal area. As soon as I changed this back to 14/6, my speeds went up to 3mb down and 1.5 up.
2. Something is wrong with my sim card. I'm absolutely sure of this because my wife has an Infuse that she got at the same time as me and we have the same ROM, modem and kernel installed. She was getting download speeds up to 6mb. I swapped sim cards with her and rebooted my phone and suddenly I was getting 6mb and she was only getting 3mb. I'll definitely be calling AT&T about it soon.
By the way, I'm about 20 miles east of Cincinnati, OH.
ROM: Infused 2.2.3
MODEM: UCKJ2
TWEAKS: None
DOWNLOAD: 6
GPS: Doesn't lock well unless I leave GPS Status running
SIGNAL: Pretty good in most areas

I get about 7 or 8 mbps within about a block of the att store, everywhere else I get 1 to 3 mbps down

Update:
Best Buy Mobile store fail ...
I went in there and told them my problem and they gave me a new sim card. In doing so, they noticed I didn't have a 4g sim card! WTF?! It's not like I'm an old customer coming from a 3g phone. I was a brand new customer coming from Verizon so I never had a sim card before.
Anyway, now that I have a 4g sim card, I'm getting 6mb down and 1.5 up at home.
I also noticed when I dial *#1100#, it says I'm on band 850 now. It used to say 1900 band 2 or something like that.

Can you post a picture of the difference? I have in the 3G sim card and I get 4G speeds??

Ummm dude, there's NO difference between any SIM cards, it's in the phones hardware. You could put an old cingular SIM in and get 4G LTE...

Anyone with more then 10 down with info?
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App

I've been playing with multiple roms over the weekend. I managed to get 10mbps dl once with leaked AT&T rom. I was pretty happy with it until I tested the wifi tethering. It only gave me 1mbps dl on wifi client (galaxy tab 10.1). So I flashed MIUI and CM7 which gave me 6-9mbps down.
I didn't like the MIUI interface, so I decided to go with CM7. Then I found out BT didn't work. So, I tried out GSInfuse 1.6, everything was good but I found GPS doesn't get a fix.
I'm debating which ROM to use next.

See? I'm surprised that he'd make up a story like that, because changing the SIM card isn't going to do anything, it just stores your # on it basically and some core information, it's not an antenna or something that actually affects any type of communicatory waves.

Usually average around 3 to 4 mbps down and 1.1 MB up at home. Get to around 7 at work. I haven't checked anywhere else really. Using dlev and uckj2 modem

Why would I make up a story like that? To fool some people on the internet that I'll never know in real life?
I don't know much about cell networks but I have no reason to make it up. I tested it multiple times. When I had my sim in there, I consistently got 1-2.5mb down. I had this issue for MONTHS and did hundreds of speed tests over that time. I had the issue no matter what rom or radio.
When I swapped in my wife's sim, I got 4-6. I've retested probably close to a hundred times since then.
Whether it's a "4g" card or not, I don't know but that's what the salesmen said.

AT&T 3G VS T-Mobile 3G (Funny/True story)!

I was at the mall earlier with my buddy and he wanted to go to the T-Mobile store and ask a few questions.... I ended up talking to the store owner about random Android/Cell phone bs.
He pulled out a Nexus S (Unrooted/No ROM) and was explaining how T-Mobile 3G was so amazing. So he showed me his SpeedTest app results and they were around 1.44 down and he had one test that hit 2.15 I think.
So I downloaded the Speedtest app on my AT&T Samsung Captivate (Rooted/Serendipity 2.0) and tested. I got 2.23 and my upload annihilated his (don't remember number but it was high.)
He was speechless. Lol!
Yeah.....as long as you live in one of the locations deemed worthy of 3g by at&t. Sadly their promise of 3g here by the end of the year was yet another empty one.

You try hitting them up for a microcell? I have heard if some getting them to give them one due to poor service.
I'm actually sick of people complaining about att speeds since everyone is talking about 4G this 4G that. I know topic says 3G but still lol...
ATT gets 4.2-5Mbps down in my area and 1.7Mbps up. No other carrier I've seen here has been close sprint vzw etc get 100KBps... tops no higher.
Look at sprint's 4G its as fast as ATT's 3G. Vzw laptops only atm. TMo who has even heard of them in my area... they r big in Texas I know but nation wide??? I give props to tmo for using gsm like att so I know their speeds got to be up to par but I look at coverage maps and say really??
But anyway that's just my 2cents I pay for 10Mbps cable and my phone beats my computers speed tests... its sad that att wireless speeds are faster then our cable provider in my area...

Is there a specific AT&T group where I can request a femtocell? I tried at the local store and with the marketing dept, and they both said no. I have 6 AT&T phones -- 4 on a family plan and 2 more on corporate contracts. There is no signal at my house -- in a low area with only 1 tower in town. I can get 3G if I drive about 1.5 miles, but cannot keep a call connected at home. Seems like I would be a perfect customer for a femtocell, but I must not be talking to the right people. Without a signal solution, I am definitely going to try another carrier.

[Q] Is anyone getting actual 4G?

Meaning you go into your settings and you see HSPA? I'm thinking I may need a new sim card because I never see it and my connection keeps dropping. But even on my modded Vibrant, I saw HSPA in the settings when it switched. I dunno... I love the phone though, this connection thing is just really bothering me..
And Rom Manager isn't downloading the recovery, can someone post the update.zip?

I went to tmobile a week ago, and told him I wasn't getting any decent data speeds, and he looked at my sim card, (it was old), and said I had a 2g sim card. He swapped it out, and I've been getting better speeds. I didn't know there was such a thing as 2g sim cards, but mine was about 2 years old, so who knows. It's worth a shot regardless.
I'd like to know, too - I've seen a number of conflicting statements regarding T-Mobile's 4G, i.e., is 4G UMTS or HSPA, etc. T-Mobile's site shows that my area has 4G coverage, I have the 4G icon showing on my phone, but the network type shows as UMTS. The data speeds I'm seeing appear more aligned with that I'd expect on 3G as opposed to 4G; however, I'm far from unhappy.
I'd also like to know if there really is a 4G SIM card that's required. My current SIM came from my G2, which I purchased at release (no 4G in my area at that time, though). The G2 demonstrates the same 4G behavior: 3G-type data speeds and a network type of UMTS.

I can confirm that your phone WILL NOT display HSPA in the settings. Mine only shows UMTS even when I am getting 4G speeds. Last night I hit 10.7megs on my downstream using the speedtest app and when I checked the settings menu, it still showed "UMTS". I have been running a lot of speed tests all over Atlanta and I get speeds ranging from 3-10 megs (usually between 5-8 megs) and I have NEVER seen anything other than UMTS. I don't believe you will ever see anything different in the settings menu as long as you are on 3g or 4g.
I notice the same UTMS is a constant for me however when I get in a known hspa+ area. I get a little better speeds than I did on my n1. I wonder if its the way lg/the radio interface is reporting. my icon in my status bar never shows 3g just 4g or 2g. something is inconsistent in what the device shows vs what it is actually doing.
my. 2 cents
Here's a screenshot (as you can see, the speeds are "4G" but never once did it ever say anything other than UMTS in the settings menu.)

It will always say umts unless you're using data. The only time it will display hspa is when you are using data. I get 4g speeds.
I see it on mines
Not sure if its because I am signed on to Gochat or not.
I'm getting hspa showing in my settings.
See that just complicates things even further. He is shoe HSPA... also I AK using the mobile signal widget and it still doesn't show an H.

This is absolutely correct. GSM 4G is LTE not HSPA/HSUPA/HSDPA or HSPA+ All of the carriers talking about 4G in the USA it is simply a marketing point.
The GSMA allowed the carriers to redefine the definition of 4G is, thus allowing them to brand 3G networks as 4G. Sad really.

This is correct, a tmo rep was in the store when i bought my g2x and he was talking about the new network tmo is working on setting up, he was showing 40mb/s speeds on his test device. true 4g will be able to go up to ~70mb/s in larger cities like wash dc

I've run speed tests in the following areas: College Park, East Point, Hapeville, Fayetteville (today), Smyrna, Cobb County area (near the perimeter), Doraville, North Druid Hills area, Buford hwy (both Gwinnett and Dekalb side), Snellville, Stone Mountain, and Decatur.
In short, I've pretty much tested all over the city. On the low end I'll get about 4 megs and the highest I've gotten is 10.7megs (in College Park near the airport).

Slow Speed + No H+ Logo / Indicator

This is going to sound abit weird and im not sure if anybody has noticed but my N5 seems to be slower (connection) than my N4?
I used to get an avg of around 20mbps download and a ping of around 30-50ms on my N4
on my N5 i am getting 12mbps avg and 100ms ping?
I am on the same network Three (uk) who have DC-HSDPA and i have tested in the same area where i normally do, with full signal and i cant get any better than 12mbps on my N5
I've also noticed that on the N4 within the signal bars used to show an up and down arrow to indicate data activity and the H used to change into a H+ when data connection was active but on the N5 there are no indicators? The H stays as it is and there are no data activity indicators?
Would i be right in assuming that this is normal or has anybody else had a H+ signal on their N5? sorry for the confusing post.
Thanks
I'm on three also . did a speed test and got 22mb down . on the n4 I got about 18mb down ... Could it be just signal issues today ?
Yes I miss the arrows indicating data as well , those will he missed

Go into the mobile network settings and verify the APN information is correct based on your carrier. If you still have your Nexus 4, take the SIM card from your Nexus 5 and put it in the 4, see if the network connectivity is as slow or works better. If it's slower then it could be some other issue; if it's fast like it should be, look at the APN info and write it down, put the SIM card back in the Nexus 5 and modify the APN info to match what the Nexus 4 was using.
Reboot it and that should get you up and functional with the proper speeds, more or less. If this doesn't help/work then you could have some other issues.
And yes, there's always the possibility your Nexus 5 has some hardware issues, it's always something to consider even in spite of it being pretty crappy if true.

I had this same question too. Earlier i was getting around 5Mbps on 3 (UK). I'm told that stock ROMs don't have a H+ icon so that answers that question. I was expecting to get DC-HSDPA speeds though. Just tested again and got 2Mbps.

Also are you running it in 3g or 4G mode? Thanks for your help guys

Changing from 4G mode to 3G mode made no difference to me. I don't see how Italia's APN settings would be any different to ours? I don't have another DC-HSDPA enabled phone to try so i can't tell if it's the phone or the network that's at issue.

I had this same question too. Earlier i was getting around 5Mbps on 3 (UK). I'm told that stock ROMs don't have a H+ icon so that answers that question. I was expecting to get DC-HSDPA speeds though. Just tested again and got 2Mbps.

Ah right, maybe its just the network having an off day then? do mobile carriers throttle the connection like broadband carriers (off peak + peak times) or maybe because ive used quite abit of data this month they have throttled my speed.
I just used the default APN that was on the sim card so i guess changing the APN wont make much difference. I guess i just expected a faster speed from a newer phone lol

It doesn't feel like throttling to me. I haven't used much data recently and it's the beginning of the month. Who knows? I've checked the 3 coverage map and this area is supposed to get good DC-HSDPA. I'll have to keep speed testing over time to see if the situation changes. Maybe i'll drop 3 a quick call if it doesn't improve.
Hopefully this area will get 4G soon, once the rollout begins in earnest.
Not sure how accurate this is. But I read somewhere that the 5 HSPA is at 21 MBPS max vs the 4 which was 42.
Knowing that you will always be lower than theoretical caps, that would make sense for slowing a bit.
But again, I haven't done a ton of research on it.

From GSM Arena: DC-HSDPA, 42 Mbps; HSDPA, 21 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps; LTE, Cat3, 50 Mbps UL, 100 Mbps DL
Phone is definitely capable enough! 3 themselves are quite conservative stating on their website that people should expect 12Mbps on DC-HSDPA. Italia has had 23Mbps already!
Could more 3 UK users post up their speedtest results?
I am with Three and getting bad speeds, download 0.35mbps upload 2.12mbps. On my S2 was getting downloads of 6mb with a similar upload speed. Going to call them tomorrow as all APN settings look fine.

I asked on the OcUK forum and at least one other person was getting 23Mbps, just like Italia. As soon as i got home from work i ran Speedtest again myself and this time got 16Mbps, which is in DC-HSDPA territory. I don't think there's any problem with the phones now, but perhaps the network hasn't been great today? I'd suggest running Speedtest a few more times and in different locations for a few days and see if anything changes.
For those getting 23Mbps on 3G, you should be very happy. My colleague was getting the same speed on EE, but on their 4G network. It looks like it'll be a while before we get decent 4G speeds in this country!

I had to get a new SIM card the other day as my old S2 sim was too big so hoping it might just be a problem with the sim card and they need to activate something as getting 4 bars with a H symbol so would have expected better speeds. Just hoping its not a hardware fault...

With such a low download speed there's a possibility of throttling in action. The last time i had speeds consistently low like that it was definitely because of throttling by 3. Have you used a lot of data recently?
Only normally use 100mb off data a month. Most of the time am connected to WiFi at home/work. It was only looking at this thread that made me check. Been stuck indoors for the last few days with the lurgy but going into work tomorrow where I get good speeds of 8mb+ so will do another test there before I start to get concerned.
Just tested a couple of times first test was just under 20 Mbps the next one was 23.85Mbps.
Just moved from my S4 and never got anywhere near this, the S4 gave me 1/2 bars signal strength the N5 gives me at least 3

Worst 4G speeds in the USA?

Which region has the very worst Verizon 4g network speeds?? I'm betting it's right here in Western New York. Can anyone top this?

Pulling 5.83 down here. But with full signal, so pretty close.

I used to often get 0.5-0.6 at peak hours when I worked in the mall (Aurora, IL), but it is a mall so there's that.

I've had sub 2Mb before, but that was on my GNex. I'm in NE Ohio. On my M8 I've seen speeds up in the 30-40's, and speeds down to ~5-6 Mb. I haven't really paid attention to see if it's related to what area I'm in, or the time of day, or what. But it can fluctuate a lot, obviously.
Past several days I've had around .2-.6 down at home. Elsewhere its 45-55 down though. I'm in south Dayton, OH.
Just an educated thought here.. but if they enabled ~700mhz AWS bands at all in the area you live in... it could be interference caused by local cable tv signals. If the cable signals in your area are in any way shape or form leaking.. it will cause problems. These frequencies now overlap.

Before AWS NYC and metro NJ...especially Newark NJ were under 1 meg down during peak hours
Now it's ridiculously fast.
Although I have noticed a slight improve since XLTE being released,
upstate NY here
just ran test
8.59mb down
10.45mb up
I have gotten fast speeds at the UB south campus. 29 down, 10 up. That was with 4 bars showing. Everywhere else, its still slow.

Wow. Looks like I'll feel like I'm back with Sprint when I go to new York this August for vacation. Some places here in California I pull over 100 down. But usually never less than 20 in worse areas. I think the east coast is just too crowded with buildings to get a good signal. The heavily populated areas don't help either

Has anyone actually found a way to determine the current band we're connected to without guessing by the speeds?

Got a 1.61 up and a 1.52 down yesterday. I am almost always on WiFi, I turned off WiFi just to run the test and I was shocked as you might guess!
I'm in Phoenix, Arizona.
Charging a monthly fee for a feature we can't really use. Interesting business model.

I just measured a half a megabit. Verizon sucks donkey schlong with there saturated network. I am in shelby mi. I tested 3g and its way faster

Ever since they turned on 4G in my area, Blackstone, Virginia, the network has sucked. I use to have full 3G everywhere and now it is spotty 3G and rarely 4G mostly 1x in the house . Yet they seem to show no network issues in my area, even though everyone complains.
In my area (Santa Clara) I usually get 2.5mbps.
Buuuuut I'll take that over sprints .02mbps I used to get here....

They must be doing major network work. Last few days at work near Long Beach, CA I'm lucky to get 2-3 bars 3G, sometimes 1 bar 4G. I use to get 2-4 bars 4G all over work since day one this phone came out. Last 5 days have been craps service! Checked online and many confirm this so not just me. People say they call customer service to only get the run around so who the hell knows what's really going on?
I swear, leaving AT&T for Verizon so I could get this device was the biggest mistake. Never had AT&T issues with network and Verizon acts like their the best in the country! Best at wasting money on T.V. ads instead of investing it in their network I guess. Damn false hope switching to Verizon.

What carrier?
I'm in Phoenix, Arizona and I get 35.59 down and 14.34 up (102ms) in 85302 and 20.95 down and 11.50 up (59ms) in 85301. Weird how down south I'm getting slower speeds but better latency...
I'll have to test other parts of the Metro Area...I'm going to be around Sun City next week so we'll see what speeds the oldies are getting

Verizon, of course.
Just got .74 mbps down and .21 mbps up, that's on 3g.
Rebooted, got .21 mbps down and .25 mbps up.
When I rebooted it did show LTE for a second or two before dropping back to 3g.
I'm not complaining, I get NO SIGNAL at all in my house with T-Mobile!
No wonder I'm always on WiFi! <G>
Got it to show LTE! 2.02 down, 1.01 up.
Pathetic.

what speed are you seeing on Tmo network..issues?

Ok so got the S8+ yesterday and one issue that crops up is my speed on tmo network It's terrible. Far slower than my old phone. I was getting yesterday about a hundred k down. Working with techsupport found if I turned LTE off I was getting better speeds
This morning some was some what better saw some 10meg burst. Let's still not the blazing speed advertised and slower than my old phone ... Now in Las Vegas So should be on the new network
Tmo tech support has been good helpful and cleared several issues. First they saw red flag in system that my phone is not LTE capable. They fixed that ...Today they found the IMEI Number was still showing up as my old phone.
I see a spike for 30+MBPS and then it trickles down into the single digits.. Also having dropped calls and missed text messages. Going to chat with Tmobile now.
Edit:
Funky stuff going on here, Tmobile reset my sim card and now I tried two different speed tests; Traditional Speedtest.net registers 70MBPS and is hosted by tmobile server. When I run fast.com I get 2.7mbps...
No issues here.

No.. I'm on Wi-Fi mode most all times.. it's very rare I get over 2 gig in a month
hell i get up to 70-85 down and 25 up, with averages around like 30-50 down.
Ok this is real crap.. so i had them roll me back to my old note 4... now the note 4 is running at the same 20, 30 k down!!!! This is using my old sim
So its network or my account...
So anyone in las vegas. What your speed on Tmoble?

NW suburbs of Chicago. Solid speeds that I've hit on previous devices, but seemingly more consistent with the S8 Plus. Though we also just got the 700 mhz turned on this week, so that's another huge variable.

100 mb down in ATX.
This happens to me every once in a while with new phones. When it happens, I will put a new SIM in and then call T-Mobile to have them add the new SIM to my account. If this doesn't fix it then you know it's a problem with your areas towers.

speed test was showing decent, but fast.com was very slow! Was at t-mobile store and it's not reconizing it on the comp showing it says "2g" but my phone says 4glte, the guy says he's seen it with release devices/pre-release and should clear up in a day

Ive roll back to.my note 4 and now on it ..it is now the same 20,30k down speed crap!!!
...ive drove in a radius of at least 20 miles from No Las Vegas to the strip by T-Mobile Arena. And tested...its the same slow speed..
I'm not just using a speed tester I'm trying to download apps and they're crawling 5 10 15 minutes to download a simple small app
T-Mobile's now keeps trying to tell me all they're doing a network upgrade in the area for the next few months and that's the reason for this...BS!... this is totally unacceptable and unusable
Is there anyone in the greater Las Vegas area on the T-Mobile network that can do some speed test to see if they're seeing the same ridiculously low virtually out of service speeds
If this is due to a network upgrade then they're the most incompetent Engineers I've ever seen.... I work in telcom!... You would never ever ever break a production Network region-wide like this and take it out of service for days...
I work too many 24/7 365 noc spent too many hours working from 1 a.m. to 5 am on a Sunday morning during the maintenance window when you can afford to impact a production Network for a few hours to do upgrades and maintenance
Houston,TX here.
So far the best speeds I've had on any phone.

What speeds are you getting out in your region? I am averaging a rough 6-10 MB down with a 20-25 ms ping over here on my side of town
