Flash voodoo kernel to stock ROM question... - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I have a NS4G that is rooted with an unlocked bootloader. The only other thing I want to do is use that color enhancing voodoo mod for "richer" color on the screen. I noticed, however, that you need to flash a kernel that supports it.
Would I be able to do that now, or would have to load another ROM first? Just curious, as I would prefer to keep the stock interface...
Thanks a TON,
Matt!

You can flash the kernel now. Just wipe cache and dalvic cache before flashing it.

Netarchy for stability,Matr1x and Trinity for more performance and better battery life.

The only kernel I've had any luck with is the Matr1x series. Currently running v9.5 (the latest) and it's running great.
Smooth, stable, quick, and easy on power consumption. Supports Voodoo, bln, deep idle, etc.
NS4G NSCollab Sprint 1.0.51, Matr1x 9.0, Shady Arctic Blue Theme

Thanks guys....
That really cleared everything up.... I went ahead and flashes the CFS version of Matr1x 9.5. For good measure, I wiped the cache partition and the dalvik cache 3 times each before installing Matr1x from the SD "card." Now i'm off to tweak....
Thanks again,
Matt!

D'Oh! wrong section, please ignore.
Cheers,
Ax

Restore kernel

Can someone help on how to restore a kernel. Kernel was from cm7 nightly 147 stock , try to install T15 kernel but stock on boot lop, so i wanted to restore the stock cm7 kernel without having to restore the entire rom, i did have nandroid back up . Thanks in advance . I dunno why i did it ( my dmb @ss noob brain , i guess t15 kernel is not compatible with cm7 nightly)
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I believe the only way to do it is to re-flash the ROM. And T15 is compatible with Cm7...im using it with MIUI which is CM based.
or try re-flashing T15 again:
Wipe cache and Dalvik and you should be good.
Try flashing the same rom, just wipe cache and dalvik cache and flash. You flashed the old morfic kernel, there is a new one in his thread towards the end of the thread, i think he didn't update the op.
Go here and get the newest one for g2x

[q] my screen is black afer installling kernel!!

I just installed the [Kernel]CM7 [2.6.32.45] on my phone with CM7 already installed. when I turned on the device after the LG logo my screen turns black?!! What coulfd be the issue...I apologize if i come off as a idiot....
You installed what kernel???
From who?
From where?
Cm7 rom has a stock kernel, so you must have flashed a custom kernel, did you check to see if it was compatible with cm7??
Yes its this kernel [Kernel]CM7 [2.6.32.45]. I downloaded from XDA and it says its compatible with CM7. When i rebooted the G2x from CWM the LG logo showed up and then went to a black screen
Just enable USB connection and put a different kernel on ur phone and flash it. Ur phone obviously can't handle the kernel

Which CM7 Kernels could the G2x handle fo.....Im new to the whole kernel thing & im tryna get some help & I want to get more power from my phone.
Each kernel is different for speed, battery life, experimental... so on and so on. Every chipset is different in our phones some can't handle certain kernels.

So what kernels would work on any G2x?? Thanks for the tip idk all our chip sets are different.

Sounds they are referring to Faux's Kernel...
You have to match them up properly as CM7 just went through a few kernel changes and the Custom Kernel developers have to make them compatible. I think Faux has .44 out which is supposed to work...
Then you also have 4 options from Faux: Pre-OC/UV or Stock Speeds; and CM and DS battery drivers.

[Q] What's your favourite ICS ROM?

Hello NS community! I exchanged my Desire for my fiancee's NS and now I'm flash happy.
I intentionally did not ask what the BEST ROM was to avoid a flame war, so please share what you find to be your FAVOURITE ICS flavour.
Until now I tried CyberGR-MOD v1 but it was very unstable for me so I was unimpressed. Next up on the flash list are CM9 Alpha 18 and Peter Alfonso's ROM.
Suggestions?
Peter Alfonso ICS
Thanks, for now I'm running CM9 Alpha18 and seems to be quite stable.
I just flashed bixies' ROM last night and it seems to be very stable so far.
IMO, the real fun with Nexus S is the kernel, we have many great kernels for you to play with

Currently I'm using Matr1x-cfs_v14.0Matr1x-cfs_v14.0. OCed at 1460 and no FCs, no reboots, no freezes, just buttery smooth performance.
Slightly off-topic, but I have to say I'm terribly impressed withe the Nexus S - it's a very powerful device.

I've read good things about that ROM and I'll be sure to flash that next, if CM9 disappoints.

It has been feeling very smooth, at least in the few hours I've used it. We'll see how it goes.
AOSP+ and Matrix 14 cfs gives me a great combination of performance and battery life. I tried ICUP too and it gives great performance but battery life is better with Matrix.
So is CM9 smooth and stable enough to be used as my everyday ROM? Also, are there any posts or wikis about all the different kernels, guides on flashing and their pros and cons? My last dev device was a Blade and there weren't nearly as many different kernels and options available for that. Oh, and does CM9 come with a kernel..I don't need to flash anything else?

Yes CM9 comes with it's own kernel. It's a mod on the 3.0.8 kernel. CM9 been running on my phone for 6 days now without a single reboot and FC.

What I normally do is:
* do a full wipe (system, data, cache) if you are flashing a different ROM
* flash ROM first, reboot to make sure it runs properly
* flash kernel, wipe dalvik-cache (or also cache, just in case)
Always flash a ROM that says it supports your phone model. Also make sure that if you're using ICS ROM then flash an ICS kernel. On the other hand, if you're using GB ROM then flash a GB kernel.

About custom kernels

I am a complete noob and I am so confused. I want to install the matr1x kernel. Do I have to have a custom rom? I don't really want a custom from. HELP

Are you unlocked and rooted with clockwork mod? You'll need to be first.
Flashed matrix kernel over stock ics myself a while back and worked fine. Just wipe dalvik cache in recovery first though.
Sent from me to you via the tinternet thingamebob.
I have done that.
Will I lose any data. Btw. Which version? Cfs or bfs.
What kernel do you recommend.

You shouldn't lose any data. CFS is aimed at multi-tasking, and BFS is more aimed at single-tasking, games, etc. CFS is everday normal use. If you do heavy gaming or other heavy single process stuff then go for BFS.
I hope this clarifies it some for you.
Matrix kernel is fine.
Also make sure you are flashing the correct Kernel for either GB or ICS. 11.5 I think is the latest for GB and 17.5 for ICS.
Successful
