how to change this "orange" hightlight color ??? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i did a search for it
i also a post that says change
framework-res.apk\res\drawable\progress_horizontal.xml
, but after reboot , still shows orange...
that color shows when you slide to the top or bottom
and other one when push it
like attached pictures
thanks in advance

Try this:
http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?894-MOD-Overscroll-Glow-Colors-(2.3.3-2.3.4)
Basically you need 2 .png files with the color you want, and a custom XML to get them working. That topic features some pre-built colors for you, but you could easily make your own if you want. But that's a good base to start

how to use ? replace what?
i download file and read that post , didn't find any instructions....

Obviously you need to put this in the framework-res.apk, found in /system/framework/.
I suggest you copy the framework-res.apk to you computer, open it with an Archive Manager and then copy the content of one of the colours.zip files into it. Then, copy the modified framework-res.apk back to /system/framework/.
Reboot and see if that worked.

okay , one more stupid question , files in .apk are .png, and these 2 files are ".psd" , so , how am i supposed to make them png?

Not a stupid question at all.
You have probably download the source files from that topic. These are 2 .psd files which are Photoshop format, making them highly customizable. In Photoshop (or GIMP) you can edit the .psd files and save them as .png files.
HOWEVER,
That topic has a small box that says "Click to expand choices of colors. (click to expand)".
If you expand it, you'll see many available colors right there (all packed in .zip files), with the .png files already made for you. These are the files that you have to put in in the framework-res.apk.
Let me know if you have any more questions,
Greetz

yes , thanks , i think i got idea how to do this althought i have not tried it yet because i´m outside of home right now
but , still , these files are for my first and second attached picture , how am i supposed to do to change the third picture´s orange color ?

That's actually a lot more difficult, it involves changing the attributes of the listView element. Read up on some theming articles and try to do it yourself. It will take some time but you'll be happy once you figure it out.

You know you can also just apply themes and enjoy the merits of other people's theming work ?

i had flashed MIUI dozens times , it looks great but still , let's just call it battery killer ... as matter of fack , just yesterday and today , i have flashed MIUI and stock at least 10 times ... it's kinda like i have "Rom-Flash obsession" or what ...XD
at the end , i decided to flash stock and wait for ICS ...
i've replaced the icons of status bar , such as WIFI, Signal , 3G icon , power level ...etc
this **** orange is last thing i have to do
by the way , every you post , types "greetz" in last line ... what's that?

Good luck getting rid of the orange, let us know if you succeeded!

Change emoticons

Hi!
I just got my Nexus One last week and its my first Android phone, and so far I love it!
There is one thing that I want to change though, the appearance of the emoticons/smilies in SMS and the "syntax" to use. Right now I have to write to get a smiley but I also want to be able to write just
Is there a way to change this or has someone else maybe already done this?
For the new emoticons I don't really care how they look, just some regular yellow smilies.
Can this be done?
Thanks!
+1 on this, it looks nice on my end with the coloured smiley but if the receiver isn't on android it looks kinda stupid.
+1 and Up
It would be very nice if someone find a solution to change the combinaison of smiley's [ to ] and also change the pictures of the smiley's

I've seen a rom for the Desire with changed smileys. Xperia ones on it. I'd love those for my Magic aswell.....
If someone finds out how to change, message me asap!
Oki, I just found it out!
Not the code combination, but the smileys, the emoticon pictures.
Ofc you must be rooted, and get to the "framework-res.apk"
Then you change the .apk to .zip or open it with 7zip or winrar.
in framework-res.apk go to: framework-res.apk\res\drawable-mdpi-v4 (this may be different from phone to phone, look in all the "drawable" folders to find: "emo_im_undecided.png" every smiley is there with names starting with "emo_im_" Change them in photoshop and you got yourself some different looking smileys
If you change .apk to .zip remember to change it back to .apk after editing it. and allways backup! incase something doesnt work as it should
God, I hate that "of course you must be rooted" - NO, I don't want to root - this should be possible in normal versions. Damn google.
i would like this too!

Do i have re-sign 'framework-res.apk' after i replace the icon ?
i already sent 'framework-res.apk' to my HTC, but why still green smiley appear not my smiley
Please help
thanks a lot, but how we remove the nose ? the "-"
thanks
smiley syntax not
+1 on the syntax of the smileys.
An easy way to change the appearance of smileys is to use handcent as your sms client btw - you can download smiley packages which display different images, and you don't have to be rooted for it to work.
But does anyone have any idea how to make Android display etc as emoticons as well as etc? Most non-smartphone users, as well as iPhone and BB user use the former syntax. It's so irritating that Android uses the latter.
I assume it's necessary to modify either a system framework file, or a file within the mms apk, but I'm no developer so have no idea where to start to tackle this!
anyone ? *sigh*
plzzz... find a solution for this...
Changing icons is easy, but syntax hard, you gotta edit some jar files aka smali editing.
Or if you are feeling adventurous, get the source and find a way to change it (I'll try when I have some free time)
Got the same problem, have replaced the framework-res.apk still the green smilies. any solution?
U need to change smileys from MMS.apk and framework-res.apk
I agree about the syntax problem, I'd really like a solution to this if someone would be kind enough to help. Being the noob that I am, I tried doing a bit of tweaking in the mms.apk file, but it made no difference when I pushed it to my phone.
All my friends use the syntax instead of , so I tend to just avoid typing emoticons at the moment
Doesn't work

Image Editing ... Please Help

Hi there ... my question is for the people who have a clue in editing images .... tried searching here, also in google, but can`t find the answer I`m looking for.
Everyone that has tried to edit a manila file with a .png or .bmp inside has seen that some pictures have PINK background (boarders) that look transparent when installed on the phone. I will attach a picture as example of course ...
So when I try to edit such image using a photo software (for example Photoshop) and save the image after a change or two, I get that PINK to show in my image on the phone .... when it`s not edited the background is still PINK but it never shows up .... so this PINK color is some kind of transparent background that works in a different way than the normal transparent layer that I add to pictures in order to be transparent ....
The perfect example ... I install a SKIN for Resco Explorer ... the skin has a .skn file and 3 png files that are the icons that are used inside the software. All 3 files are with PINK boarders, so when I install them they show completely transparent on the phone ... when I edit them and remove the PINK at all from the image and make that same PINK transparent, the icons are not transparent any more but with WHITE background .... That happens ONLY ON these pictures that have that PINK background by default. If I take a normal image that has no PINK boarders and make it transparent it shows also transparent in my phone. The second try with the png files with the icons for Resco is by editing the file without removing the PINK background ... let`s say I change an icon and then when I save the image and put it in my phone ... I can see the pink behind the edited icon .... when I try to copy just the pink and make it a layer it shows PINK on my phone ....
So in less words ... is there a way to make my own PINK background to look transparent, like in the original files, and is there some kind of tutorial on how to do that .... cause it`s really different when you try to edit an image with that kind of background and a normal transparent background ... it just shows up differently in phone !
Hope people that have worked with photoshop know what I`m talking about.
Thanks for your time reading this whole thing and really hope that someone could help me ... thanks in advanced !
P.S. Uploading 2 images ... 1 is from the phcanImages.dll that has all Images from the Dialer screen , and the other is a png file with icons for resco explorer. Both have that PINK background and both show up differently when that pink is replaced with a normal transparent layer !
Well, a bmp picture won´t give you transparency options.
Attached, see your example as a png picture.
Don´t know about your settings in Photoshop...
And how did u manage to make it look like that .... and if I save that file as .png will I get the PINK background again ?
Ok ... so I tried to save the bmp as png ... the pink background was still there when I saved it as png .... I tried to make it transparent but I don`t know how , cause that is neither Raster or Layer ... it`s background and I cant get it transparent .... I tried another thing ... I made a transparent background ... added a layer and draw custom lines.. then saved the image as .bmp .... I got an image with white background instead of transparent .... how can I get that PINK background that the phone recognizes as transparent and save it as BMP file ???
Ok ... let me put it that way ... someone can really help if he can .... how to make a transparent background in a BMP file ?

This is not possible so far i know!
If you download the attached file ... you`ll see that there is a PINK background that doesn`t show in the phone ... so phone recognizes it as transparent .... I`m asking how can I do such background on a BMP file ......
Anybody
I actually noticed this while messing around with a dialer, it seemed that the pink areas were indeed transparant on the phone. I was able to copy the pink colour to make The answer/ignore slider transparent if i wanted to. No idea if you can create a new image and have tranceparency tho.
try to save it as gif on the PhotoShop and then try to change its extension to bmp, it may work that way. cheers
I`m sure that here are people that have edited tons of bmp files .... it`s absolutely impossible no one to know how can I make transparent parts on a bmp file .... renaming gif to bmp didn`t work !!!!!!

OMG, you can never do this!, contents on file is the same, you are ONLY changing the file extension. If you, for example, create a .wav file and then change it to .mp3 it doesn't convert to an MP3 file, it's only a WAV file with a xxxx.mp3 name, so, as content isn't mp3, you can't read it in a mp3-only player.
Now, with that in mind, an BMP file format (And JPG's by the way) don't have any way to establish transparency or semi-transparency (like alpha in PNG's format.). So many programs needing transparent pixels on BMP files have used along many years a especific RGB color (also called Mask color) that isn't used often in pictures, like a bright pink or a bright green, (pink being the most used). This way, a program reading this file detect pixels with this EXACT color and do their magic ignoring those pixels making them transparents.
This pink color is R:255, G:0, B:255 or #ff00ff in hex.
Green in turn is R:0, G:255, B:0 or #00ff00 in hex.
NOTE: NEVER use JPG format when working with this type of masking, as JPG compression adds artifacts and modifies colors slightly. You must use EXACTLY this color code for masking BMP files (you can't use for example R:254, G:0, B:255).
also dont know, sorry
+1 on post 12.
I did not know the exact color of pink (hex code) but when I worked with xdashutdown skins, the PNG's have pink background so I simply used the color picker and I have perfect transparencies every time. At least now I know the hex code for this pink. Thanks!

Thanks for your responce .... Tried everything I could , but it didn`t work out as I expected ... it still does show PINK on my phone ... don`t know why .... I use photoshop and the BMP I put in the .dll I`m trying to modify has the same hex color : 255 ; 0 ; 255 ... but still shows as pink.
Can you please try to modify the following and see if there is not a problem with the BMP itself. I`m puting the original image from the .dll and the way I would like to look (the Pink that I add must be transparent) as another image.
P.S.
Tried also to save the bmp as 16bit , 24bit and 32 bit BMP in Photoshop ... cause I read somewhere that the BMP must not be in 24bit format .... when I saved it as 16bit the PINK was saved as 248 ; 0 ; 248 .... then I dofied it again .
So I tried everything in every tutorial without luck

Ok I'll look
Update: Your pink color is ok, I think it must be the program (manila?) is not programmed to search transparency in that part of the image. If so, there is nothing you can do as far as I know, as you don't have the source code.

Cant be manila .... I`m editing phcanImages.dll ... it`s the file that has all images from the Dialer ... as I saw there were people that modified some images from the same .dll, I don`t think it`s possible some program to recognize just part of the .dll`s images color, not all the images.
So maybe I`m doing something wrong.
I really tried everything possible with the "magic color"... I know about it for a week now, it`s not new information ... so I tried really everything, read many tutorials, but it didn`t help.

[HOW TO] Animated Status Bar Pulldown for GB Roms

I saw this in an article on droid-life: Here
Original Thread: Animated status bar pulldown for GB roms
Hope this could help some devs/themers get this going for us EVO users
The Author of this is: Alastrionia

MODS: If this should not be here, please remove, and my sincere apologizes.
Animated status bar pulldown for GB roms
First off this should work with all GB based roms that use systemui.apk
there may be subtle differences but the basics should be the same all around.
after much trial and error and ripping what little hair I have left out
success was mine and it's time to share this with everyone
and it's so simple that you'll love how fast you can integrate this into ROM's / themes / whatever your heart desires
1. take your systemui.apk and decompile it
2. navigate to layout folder
3. grab "status_bar_tracking.xml" and open it up in your editor
(now for the fun)
4. to the first line - "com.android.systemui.statusbar.TrackingView" add this ""android:background="@drawable/...anim.xml""
<com.android.systemui.statusbar.TrackingView android:background="@drawable/...anim.xml...>
5. after saving that, navigate back into the drawable folder and add your animation.xml file there
5a. next navigate into the drawable/hdpi folder and add your animated images
6. also in the drawable/hdpi folder find and open up the shade_bg.png with your editor and make it 100% transparent
7. now it's time to recompile your apk , following all the usual directions with that
8. enjoy your newly created systemui.apk with a pretty animated background. new and fresh and unlike anything before
that's it. done deal. it's super easy and fast and breathes life into true customization.
I used the stat_sys_upload.xml from the framework-res.apk as my base
all I had to do was change the timing and change the image names.
also you'll notice above - don't copy it word for word on the xml.
I did the "..." meaning whatever you decide to name your file.
I'll try to throw up a video shortly of my success with this so everyone can see it.

I think by that he means to open the systemui.apk
I used 7zip to open a cm7 nightly just now and it's located in the system/app folder. Inside the .apk theres:
res (folder)
AndroidManifest.xml
classes.dex
resources.arsc
Inside the res folder:
anim (folder)
drawable (folder)
drawable-hdpi (folder)
layout (folder)
xml (folder)
Hopefully some themers can get some pretty nice/cool things done with this.
No you would have to decompile the apk with a apk decompiler..Unzipping it will not work.Thats just for replacing images.

i'll help people if they're having trouble. probably won't do this personally.
and yeah, to see .xml files correctly, you need an apk decompiler.
Nice find! Will definitely try this.

Yeah, I got it working...Needs some tweaking. I tried it with a 24 frame boot animation.. very laggy. I suspect that a 8-15 frame animation would do well

[Guide]Change the Ticker Clock Color!

Alright, I am going to try and make this guide as easy to follow as possible for the 1000x people who requested it, lol...
Before starting there is a few things you are going to need/should have:
apk manager...
text editor...
General Idea with How to Work a Computer/Follow Directions
Since we are going to be editing xml's, you have to use apk manager... Hopefully you have some basic knowledge with this "program", since it takes a little getting used to.. If not though, i will try and make this as painless as possible
First, open up apk manager and decompile (9) the framework-res.apk of your choosing.. You can unzip my gingerbread theme and use that framework-res, or any other one that you can find
Now, go to the projects folder, and navigate to "framework-res.apk\res\layout".. This is where, as the name implies, all the layouts for the ticker are placed... They are in xml format, so you can easily use notepad or such...
The XML that we are looking for in order to change the color is "standbymode.xml". Open it up in your text editor... Don't be intimidated, i know it looks confusing lol.. We are only messing with a little part...
Navigate down to the 13th line, aka "<TextView android:textSize="@dimen/time.text.size"... This is where the phone gets its information about the size, font, and color for the Time!
Scroll through that line until you come across android:textColor="blah"... As you can guess the Hex Value within the quotes is the color the clock is! Right now it is ffeaff00, but we can very easily change that
All you have to do now is by googling "Hex value for purple" or whatever color you want, find the hex value that you want to use The code should be exactly six letters/numbers, no more and no less... Now, copy that hex value, and replace the old code from "ff" on! Do not erase those first two letters, because that is telling the phone what transparency value to use, and we would like to keep it fully visible
Easy Enough, right? The hard part is now done!
All we have to do now is recompile the apk, which can be tricky if you don't know what your doing..
P.S if you know how to do this, you are done! I would still scan over these steps though, just to make sure you are doing it right
To compile in apk manager, just type 11! if you get a compile error, then you did something wrong That shouldn't happen though, this is a relatively easy mod....
Wait a while until you get a "Is this a system apk?" message... type "y".... then type y again for the next message... Now do what it says!
Don't forget to delete the "resources.arsc" file, and the "standbymode.xml" file!
Now you are done!! Just replace that framework using whatever method you use, Whether that be with adb when the phone is in recovery, or by replacing the new modified apk with the original within a zip file already made by me
If you make your own, don't be stingy.. Upload it to XDA or whatever, and share it with the community I will put it up on the front page, and give you the credit Make sure though you share with me what kind of framework-res.apk it is, and where you got as in, if you got it from my gingerbread package, or from my stock 2.2 Accurate theme, or Reboot Options, or any other option
fantastic guide! thank you for this!
but im just wondering one thing, why dont you have a donate button for all the hard work you have been giving to the continuum community? hmmm
Trail, is there any code we can get to that's worth modding that's in Java? If so, I can start doing some development.

I added my own outlined orange softkeys, and and orange ticker color.
and a few things to the lockscreen text for the lulz
Also I failed to mention that it's based on your accurate gingerbread theme.
Thank you Jakeschweinz for sharing with the community I shall put this in the main mod Thread, and make it easy for everyone to find it And i'll be sure to let you have all the credit
Thanks again!
just a quick link to help you guys out with color

and here's my baby blue clock color

And thanks again Trailblazer for this Guide.
You tricky bugger you figured it out without me lol..
Nice job!
So I'm kinda new to doing this, and I saw the upload that someone has on there for mediafire, and I was wondering, do you just download that, or do you put it in the .apk manager and change it?
This guide is very soon going to be outdated

[Q] How to dim soft keys Loli 5.1

Title say all , i have a Nexus 5 lolipop 5.1 and i want to full dim 0 my visor . Softkeys inclued.
Need help please.
If you want to dim the navigation bar (why would you need to?) you'll probably have to decompile SystemUI, modify the drawables then recompile, or use Xposed.
It's not necessary to decompile. As .apk is actually a .zip, you can simply change .png-s inside drawable folders.
But if you use 5.1 it will be much harder to change original SystemUI with yours, because of security changes in system partition.

This one is tricky though since you have to make sure, not to damage the signature. Some PNG use a "special" format and need to be decompiled first --> modified --> recompiled --> injected again in the Framework.

I wrote this many times: you DON'T need to decompile apps which came from factory image. And even .9.png-s can be simplycomment on this are changed. For example: We wish to change background of power widget. 1. Pull the Settings.apk from /data/priv-app. Copy to PC. Rename it to .zip (you don't need any extra tool for this) or use TotalCommander - you even don't need to rename .apk to .zip with it. We must look for appropriate image (appwidget_bg_holo.9.png in /res/drawable-xxhdpi-v4) inside. Make some regullary png in Photoshop in size and resolution of original one - you can free your imaginations about colors as you like. Now copy the name of original image and with paste rename your own. Put your renamed image into .zip (overwrite original one) and thats all philosophy.
This is possible just with apps from factory image and you will not brake any signature. This works for me since Xperia X10 until Nexus 5 with 5.0.2. On 5.1 biggest problem is (at least for me) that I don't know how to integrate updates of system apps into rom. But if you are on 5.0.2 or above, you can simply try. Just remember to backup first.

P.S. Any further informations are welcome, but at least people try this first. And it's a little annoying to write this down over and over again.
Extracting and inserting pictures is not the problem but like I mentioned before, the "9" PNG. If you simply copy them, edit them and reinsert them again, it might turn out to be a mess and these pictures are not displayed the right way. I gave up theming stuff a long time ago since it´s not really worth the trouble anymore. At least if you use a legal Gfx tool ( since I have my doubts that most people own a real licensed version of Photoshop anyway ) like eg. GIMP, you might expect some trouble if you don´t decompile "9" PNGs first. At least I can tell that I had to go through the trouble while I still had my old Galaxy S3 in order to make them usable, the way I wanted them to be
I know the procedure, don´t worry

As I said: you must not copy and edit existing .9.png. You have to create a new one and just name it with the procedure as I wrote above. So you have to copy the name of .9.png and paste that in the name of your own image. Am I clear enough now?
Forgive me to say, but you don't know this. Sorry.
Best regards, Zagor
I guess you don´t read what I write ? If you want to color a existing image ( "9" ), it will be displayed faulty if you don´t proceed like I did. End of the story. You can replace it with another image you can rename but it won´t be displayed the right way in some circumstances. I´m out.

Out of what? Space?
I don't guess, I conclude: You don't read or understood what I wrote.
Back to topic: OP: If you want to change navbars buttons (those are ordinary .png-s) you can simply pull them off, modify them and put back into .apk as I already described. You don't need to decompile, compile, undercompile or hipercompile anything.
Regards from Jupiter (yes, I'm also out), Zagor
And the last and for all!
This has been done without superduperpuper compiling. Just pure windows and photoshop.
@Elluel, @Gorgtech and all of the other sceptics: Look at the navbars of attached screenshot and next time, please check the informations before you disagree with them.
Regards, Zagor
IMO @zagorteney is right as long as you do not unzip/extract the apk. If you check the .9.png with a zip viewer then you can see the black border of 1px. Modifying the icon/log/picture without touching the black borders should not create bugs.
Regarding the navbar buttons it's easier as explained above.
@Primokorn
I've changed almost all of Xperia S UI on that way, to looks more AOSP. But at the end I figured it out, that it's simplier if I get Nexus.
Just to notice you. The problem is because in photoshop you can't create .9.png-s. But if you create your own png and rename it with the mentioned method, there will be no problem with those images either. For example, you can try to change power widget background on this way.

Actually you can create .9.png files with Photoshop. I did it a lot of times.
Anyways all my modded apks have been decompiled/modified/recompiled because you cannot use this method for .xml files, can you? Moreover, theming files with a phone is a mess compared to a comfortable destop version of PS lol
@Primokorn
Yes, its true if we are talking about some serious theming. But OP just want to get little different nav buttons. So, I just want to say, that you don't need to change any .xml for that purpose, you don't need to decompile and recompile and you don't need to worry that you'll break signatures. As simple as that.
That's all folks.

Do not be rude. Nobody can know everything and it is one of the goals of XDA to learn every day. All recognized members deserve their status.

The problem is that n00bs are mislead by recognized members who think that they know everything. At least they could check before post.
And no, I'm not rude. Rude are exactly those contributors.
