[Q] Droid to iPad 1? Is It Possible? - General Questions and Answers

Howdy,
Similar threads found are unrelated. ^_^
I have a 16gb, wifi ipad 1. I'm willing to try and put any form of droid on it, so that we can get miui or better onto it.
We can jailbreak it with cydia/redsnow, and install any recommended apps from that point, or not jailbreak it and follow instructions.
I can follow written & video instructions easily.
I've googled, binged, etc... I've searched this forum under ipad, or ipad 1, etc.
I have the ipad usb cable naturally, am expecting that if there is a successful ipad droid port or variant, i'm figuring it'll take anywhere from 15mins --- 3hrs to complete this task in 1-15 tries.
I have patience, even though I may seem otherwise... I'm willing to try this out.
If anyone can help/point me in the right direction, other then the door ^_^, very much appreciated.
My pc that I am on, is,
Windows 7, ultimate, 64bit.
I have a laptop with uBuntu 10.10, (No clue how to use terminal, however am willing to try).
I have a friend with a macbook pro, can try there also as needed.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone on this, who can help.
With respects,
- rmleloup

It is not possible. It would be awesome though
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium

well, actually it is possible, but its very difficult. see here
http://www.idroidproject.org/

You can't get into iPad's bootloader.
EDIT - mtmerrick's link may just prove me wrong.

http://www.idroidproject.org/wiki/Status
see here for status on ROMs. progress is incredibly slow on this project, but the froyo ports are coming along pretty good on the early devices.

I've checked that site out, but I have yet to see any serious progress over the past year... at all on the ipad... It's as if they've stalled outright.
What i'd love to see, is if there is another team anywhere that could be doing it. It honestly doesn't sound that hard... I know there's code and such, and i'm no where near a codemonkey of any form, but still...

Market Install Process Questions

Need clarifications on Market install procedure:
1. Calls for using "AndRootFile." I go to site to DL and it asks what phone to get right apk. Got no stinkin' phone. What do I put in? Or where can I get the apk for G-Tablet?
2. Procedure call for mounting R/W and making sure to make R/O when finished. How?
3. Guide for ADB setup at the end. Does that have to be done manually or do the files above take care of the changes? Or does the DL usb file replace the stock file?
4. i have had Gmail for a long time. Is anything other than a Gmail signon needed to set up market and the other apps?
Thanks for any help.

I was hoping a couple of quick answers would save me some time and uncertainty or maybe a mistake.
Anyone help?

1. There won't be a version of androot specifically for the G tab. Just find an androot apk and install it.
2. Refers to read/write, and read only. Once androot is installed it will have a selection allowing for you to be a Superuser, and to set r/w, or ro.
3. ADB is setup manually. It is run from a command line. The USB driver gets installed by hooking up your G tab by usb, don't mount it from the G tab though. Then run the driver program in windows to install the driver.
4. Yes, once it is all installed your Gmail login will do it all. There is a market fix that will need to be done also as the market will be really incomplete. The fix is easy...
5. I know you didn't have a 5, and you will think I am beating a dead horse. If you were to just install TnTLite2.2 all the work is done, your G tab will scream, and you will be done...
Thanks for the quick clarifications. Now a comment for your (5) comment.
I have thought of going ahead and flashing -- and yes I know that solves some problems. But aside from being conservative hardware wise:
1. My biggest objection to flashing is that there is no real way back to stock. Vanilla is not factory if I understand right. And I'm not sure cwm lets you make a restorable factory image. If I knew I could restore a factory image, it would make playing a little easier for me.
2. I'm not new to computers or OSes, but I am new to Android. There is a certain learning advantage in doing the various procedures -- the negative being that that makes me have to ask people like you for the little details I need.
3. Screaming is relative. Compared to my PDA and my netbook, my G already screams. And none of them scream compared to my gaming machine which is probably in the top 10 per cent speed-wise. So screaming would only make a little difference for me.
4. And then there the projected Dec. 19 update. I realize that VS has missed the boat several times in all of this, but it would be tooooooooo sweet if they incorporated a lot of the fixes and ideas voiced here into the update and make a stock machine even better.
5. Since you quit at five I will too. I really would like to have a $279 G-Tablet to play with, but I like in the country and even the nearby large city doesn't have either enough Sears or tech enthusiasts for me to get that lucky. If I had a second one, I could play a little more since I wouldn't necessary have to keep it working so I could use it.
Anyhow, thanks again for the clarifications and your comments. There is no dead anything around here, BTW!!!

Well I do understand why you want to do things the way you do. And just in case you may have not seen it. You can go all the way back to original by using NVFlash and the original images made way back a whole month ago. (Seems longer than that). I have done it a couple times while messing around with things that didn't work. Here is a little something I wrote up about how to do it..
http://forum.tegratab.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8
I didn't know what to think when I read your #2 comment. I am not an expert by any means but is it really that bad to have to ask?
"2. I'm not new to computers or OSes, but I am new to Android. There is a certain learning advantage in doing the various procedures -- the negative being that that makes me have to ask people like you for the little details I need."
Anyway, hope it helped..
Number two is nothing except that I am pretty independent and usually I am the one doing the helping -- and I just dislike bothering other people for basic info.
One of my dislikes about the G-Tablet and Android is that there are not many really good "user" books available. Lots of Android programming books, but none that just tell how it works and what to do for common tasks, etc. And what can I say about the G-Tablet manual. It does a credible job of describing the hardware, but I wish they had a few chapters on basic operation.
Well, I guess some of this is just griping so I'll shut up.

P. S. -- Is there any particular version of "AndRootFile" that will work better than the others?

I think androot is the same. The supported list is likely just stuff they have tested it with. I usually use Root Explorer myself. Androot is free, Root Explorer costs a couple dollars but is easier to use, and more capable. I also use a file manager named Es File Explorer. It is free in the market and once you get the hang of how it works it can be used on the lan to move stuff between your pc and tablet, extract zip files, etc.
I don't know if there will ever be a good manual for Android. From what I can tell it is kind of a free for all out there. Does not seem there are very many real solid standards but there sure are a lot of variations.
I think most of the hardware for sale now is not really made by any of the companies with there name on it. The G tablet is sold by 3-4 different companies, just named differently. Seems they are at the mercy, and so are we of how well they can communicate what they want fixed to a company in another country. I wish there was a company that built a tablet in house that was open with the customers. Would sure make bug fixes, and feature changes easier. As it stands, they are happy to sell whatever they get.
Everyone.
You can close this thread as far as I am concerned. I worked with adapting a stock machine until I simply got tired of it. I have converted to TnT 2.20 at this time and am pleased so far. I will write more about the experience when I have time.

Original Impression - Is this for real?

I bought this Gtablet when my wife and I were out doing last minute Christmas shopping on Friday afternoon. No actual live unit on display or available at Sears so bought one based on hope. My first impressions were very mixed. It was painfully slow when I first booted it up while waiting for my wife who had gone into another store and I waited for her in the car (plugged in using inverter we carry with us). Later when we got home it downloaded the update and that helped the speed issue (but still sluggish) but I've run into all kinds of issues that have me ready to return this thing.
First thing I noticed is the number of times that apps force close on the GT including the browser built into the unit. That is about to drive me nuts but I discovered another even more major issue - for me. I planned to use this device to log into our webmail server when I'm travelling in order to get my mail. I can log into the webmail and I can bring up the mail but when I open a piece of email I cannot scroll the screen to read the entire email. I also have a Moto DX and I can read my email via web just fine on that (don't like it because of the small screen and keyboard). So, why does my DX work fine with our webmail client and the GT not work? I am clueless and ticked off.
I was going to return it today but my wife wants me to hold off and call Viewsonic support but I have my doubts that they will be of much help. So, I'm wondering if putting up a custom ROM might help because of using a different kernel?
I have a couple of weeks to return this but I want it either working or gone so I have a proposal. I'm new to Android and don't want to take the chance of bricking this and losing my money and I need this done quickly in order to make a decision. I"m willing to pay a modest fee for someone "KNOWLEDGEABLE" to possiby teamviewer into one of my machines to to root/rom this unit. There would absolutely have to be a return to stock method in case the new rom doesn't work either.

Unless you mess around with the bootloader, you cant really brick it. Nobody has yet, and I doubt you would be the first.
Also I reccomend this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885940
It is like A lite eversoin of TNT lite. It speeds it upi while keeping it stockish.
Many of us understand your experience. Most of us acknowledge that the first software was not what it should have been.
I have a modded machine which is super. I have an OTA 3389 tablet which is more than acceptable.
From your comments, it sounds to me like your plan to return is the best course of action.
The G-Tablet can be a super machine, but not without some interest in working with and improving it on your part.
Sorry this is not better news. Maybe someone else will respond with a different idea.

Yep, just check the dev forum for instructions on installing new custom firmware. I'd also recommend making sure that you install clockwork mod 0.8 to ease backup/restores.
...OTOH from what I've heard is that the new stock fw 3389 is quite a bit better than what it ships with. And from there you can add a few minor updates, rooting, maybe the performance pack, sideload some apps and possibly the market "fix" which might be good enough for you, but even then I'd really have to recommend installing clockwork mod simply for the ease of making an image of a nicely working modified system and then being able to restore that if something messes it up...
Tablet is really nice, stable, and fast once properly setup and it's not really too hard to do any of the above IF you FOLLOW the instructions and READ them ENTIRELY and the caveats BEFOREHAND.
Really it's almost plug and play...

Here's a trick that works for me: if I zoom in a little on the webmail page that I cannot scroll, after the zooming in I am able to scroll to view the entire email.
I guess that soon you'll find the lack of Copy/Paste. Apple was run out of town for this and Windows Phone 7 too. At least with the G Tablet the lack of Copy/Paste seems to be limited to the stock apps.

Thanks John for that suggestion!! It worked and I can read my email from the G. That makes me happy.
Now for a new issue, I formatted a 16gig SD (FAT32) and put that in, the unit says that it knows that it is there but when I connect the unit using the USB cable to my Win 7 (64) machine its finds the machine, I tell it to activate USB transfer mode but I don't see SD2 in there. I wanted to transfer a pile of music onto it but can't do that since I can't see it. I tried transferring the music directly to the sd and then putting it into the G but when I do that it doesn't find anything.
I didn't really find anything on point in searching so if I'm missing that please point me to the thread.
I think I will go ahead and work with this. I've used and moded Win Mobile phones for the last ten years but am new to Android.
The offer for help still stands if anyone wants to take advantage and I would like to use it as a learning experience as I get into Android.
Oh yeah, thanks to all for the super fast responses. That is really appreciated. Even though it only shows that I have 5 or six posts here that isn't quite accurate. Many years ago when this site first opened I found it because I was using XDA phones but those were all WinMO at the time. I drifted away for a long time and when I came back now I am a new member again here. No longer a WinMo user and I really don't like Windows Phone 7 so I bought a Moto DX and love the phone, got my wife an HTC Incredible (she gave up her iPhone for that and that took a LOT of convincing on my part) but I am pretty much really happy with the Android OS and where it seesm to be going.
What I do love about the G is the size, the Galaxy Tab is just too small and the 800 horizontal resolution is too small so when I found a 10" tablet with 1024 and only $379.95 it sounded like a great deal. The screen angle is a ***** but I can live with that but I am sorely missing the Market (GMarket is sad). Looking forward to getting this machine rooted and rom'ed and up and running like it should be.

Install the latest update and do a factory restore inside the security section of settings.
Then if you want install the tnt enhancement pack from the device section. Don't worry about returning to stock because they don't even open the box when you return or exchange. If they did, they would have no idea what they would be looking at.

You should be able to see the microsd on the Gtab using, for example, ES File explorer. It'll be at /sdcard2.
As for seeing /sdcard2 from your pc, I thought I saw a post saying that if you have winamp installed on the gtab, it has an option for mounting sdcard2, and when that's enabled you can see /sdcard2. Haven't tried that myself.

Ahead of the game.
Hi racedog, actually I think you are ahead of the game. You seem to have made a lot of progress if you bought this Christmas eve.
How did you get it to run in the parking lot of the mall on Christmas eve? Even with a power inverter for power, hoe did you get a WiFi connection?
So far my G Tablet is stock and I am over-all happy with it. However, after Viewsonics post that they won't be providing any support for swapping the LCD screen, I feel they are missing the point. Their post said they would be anouncing some new products soon (my guess is at CES right after the first of the year).
I might end up taking my G Tablet back to Sears and waiting for the newer, more powerful and maybe more promising second generation tablets I am sure are to come at CES.
This tablet has been fun and I may keep it, but, I would really like to know the price points on the new models at CES.
Sucks out of the box.
Erase it and start over.
Load Clockwork Recovery Mod first! Put the update.zip on the sdcard, don't worry about the external SD method.
Once you have that boot mod, it's next to impossible to screw it up.
Flash that then get TNT lite 3.1.0 plus the supplement
Make sure you format the SDCARD using the advanced menu 2048 and 0 swap r it will crash on ya.
Do the full market fix. Download Dolphin HD and you will have a very usable tablet.

I will be doing the clockwork mod and putting on a new rom. The question is about formatting the card. You mention above used "advanced menu 2048", I don't know where I would find that on android on the G, or are you referring to something else?
I didn't get it connected while in the car, I just had it plugged in so that I could take a look at it and start putting a charge on it. I didn't connect until I got home. However, I DID try connecting it in the car using my Moto DX with wireless tether. The dx showed that it was running but the G never found the signal from the phone. It did see a few other secured wifi connections but it didn't see the phone. I have no idea whether this was because I don't have wifi tethering setup correctly on the DX or what the deal is but I figured I would work with that later.
I don't really care if I have to tether via usb with the phone but wifi is a lot cleaner and easier if possible. I know that easy tether and pdanet are out there but I haven't checked to see if they have an android client yet, I've only used them on my Win 7 netbook.

I found that the stock rom cannot use ad-hoc networks. I had to use the hack for the 3G Hotspot app on the DX to get it working on the Gtab. Once I upgraded to TnT lite than I was able to use Wireless Tether and stopped getting all the drops and reconnects too.
I really think that you will be happy with this as soon as you mod it with what's here in this community. I have only been here for less than a week and have found answers to all my questions. Good luck.

I appreciate the offer but because of the holidays I won't be able to take you up on it until probably Tuesday, maybe tomorrow Monday if I get REALLY lucky. I going to be trying to do as much as I can myself until them.
I wondered if the problem might be that the stock rom did not recognize ad hoc networks because I looked for the option to select it and it was not there. Thanks for that info.
R
Forgot, the winamp solution didn't work. I selected the mount option in winamp but it did nothing. I will get back to this issue once I get the greater issue of the rom and wifi connect to my phone fixed. Those are the real biggies that need fixing first.
R
Thanks to rothnic this new G has CWM installed and tnt like running on it along with Market and other apps that I've downloaded from it. What a huge difference this makes, my constant FC's seem to have stopped happening and I am now very happy with this unit. What a world of difference.
The screen is still a major issue but I can live with it (for now, will keep watching the screen swapping thread) but the device is fast, functional and completely usable whereas 24 hours ago I was set to return it to Sears but my wife talked me out of that and to try fixing it.
Again, special thanks to rothnic for all the "above and beyond" help and patience and also to all of the Gtab community here for the help and suggestions.

[Q] will the transformer suit my needs/expectations?

im in the market for a tablet and I keep coming back to the transformer.ive done some research but I just need a few questions answered by actual owners to make me take the leap. i need the following in my tab:
eye candy
hdmi out
cwm/roms
no annoying bugs. ( by annoying i mean reboots and such. no stock g2x crap )
from the threads i know it has the 1st 3. but ill need some clarification on the bugs part. now to the deal breakers. I NEED certain apps to work on this bad boy
hbo go
netflix
longevity ( it doesnt have to be as good as the lets say HD2 but u get the point)
ps3 sixaxis controller (ESPECIALLY THIS ONE, ill pass if it doesn't)
also all in all are you guys happy with the tablet? would you prefer another one and if so why? any features that just make you want to smash it against the wall? lol thanks

Does HDMI well, there is CWM and ROMS but the newer models have a different secure key so regular root methods may not work...but when you do get root, the custom roms fix all those bugs. And if not, request it!
As for eye candy, I love showing it off. The key is having it in the dock. Then undocking blows their mind. they go, woah!!! I need to get one! haha.
Havent tried hbo go, sorry.
I hear the last update enables netflix without root!
last long i suppose, no one knows since its been out for a few months. but you could RMA.
The PS3 controller works. Tried it. that was one of the first things I did. I hear they even have an app for the wireless, you dont need the usb cable plugged in to the dock. Wii works too. Not sure about xbox.
Love the tablet. best thing ive bought in a while. use it all the time. its an extension of my main gadgets. My desktop, tablet and phone have all the same stuff, all synced. And when i leave my desktop, my tablet has the things the desktop was doing (either by chrome to phone or remote desktop). The thing makes calls too. And google voice works, so text and voicemail. Overall, I see this as the future. Dock when you need to type fast/add precision. undock for portability/touchscreen. smoooooth. best of both worlds. remoting into windows works perfect, remote RDP supports right click. splashtop is better for streaming however, plays videos like a boss. everyone will get one of these eventually.
thanks for the insight. im definitely looking into this tab
1 have not tried hbo go
2 stock firmware has netflix support now, find the .apk installer in google and download then install
3 longevity, don't know to early to tell, it is not that old. but i would think so because it is a low price and has a unique dock.
4 havent tried this one but honeycomb should just recognize it. somewhere i saw an app to let you connect through bluetooth, but you needed root.
as far as rooting goes some b70 models all ones above were changed so you couldnt root them at the moment. the people who rooted it the first time are trying to get a working root for the newer models to. he may get them to be rootable again and asus may block it again. only time will tell.
some b70's becouse ming was rootable.
Very happy with this tab. I dwelled for hours on it - trying to chose between this and the acer iconia. Both have their merits but in the end decided its rather have this for the dock. At times a proper keyboard can be handy and the extra battery life is also nice. I don't envisage bring away from power more than a couple of hours but good to know I can go probably a few days without needing to look at a charger if I had to.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
yeah i plan on getting it from amazon so im assuming I would get a newer model b70 or b80. hopefully these will be rootable in the near future....i have plans for this bad boy
Well, I'm not... Asus support sucks, mine has been broken since mid July and asus have failed to fix it twice now. Waste of money its spending all its time broken.
^^^^^^^what exactly is broken on yours?
get an ipad.
^^cant....im not a sheep

Just bought mine yesterday from a local best buy store and it happened to be a B60 model. So excited when I saw this. Used it all last night and really love the thing. Best buy I have made in a long time.

Windows on the Atrix 2?

I saw this thread about the HTC Evo 3D and was wondering if it was possible to do this on our phones. I know our phones are completely different but was just curious.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459153
i saw that on engadget too! i tried it and it ran, however it says there can be problems with it(look on the thread) and i encountered those with no luck on fixing them.
I have to say is, why would you want to do that? It will be VERY slow, if you could get it work. This not something I want to spend time on to play with, when we have webtop. I don't know maybe lfaber06 might, but not me.... I am kind of a *NIX bigot....
This phone already has Ubuntu installed on it, and you just need the dock, or a home made hub, and one of the hdmi webtop hacks.... Ubuntu is a million times better than windows on the hardware in this phone.

Ill pass.. Ill keep my Gtab
The specs do not impress.
Watching him futz his way though the test was interesting. That device was lagging all over the place.
I might get one to feed to my Nook Tablet though.
I've just traded my 7" Galaxy Tab for a 10" one. Think I'll stick with that
Envizen Digital, 7"
Hi Friends,
I Have one of these Tablets running ICS.
What i would prefer to have is 2.3 -- does anybody have any recommendations on how I to do this?? If there's any how-to guides please let me know.
What i would like to do is extract the factory image and archive then download the 2.3 rom to install. I will need to know where to download the 2.3 and the
required tools. Please... anything... there's not much info on this anywhere.
Thanks!

New Android 4.0.3 tablet. What's the performance?
but ther's too bugs. Galaxy fit 5670
the performance looks great .
Not great, you certainly get what you pay for ($129 @ NCIX when I grabbed it). The market is also locked down to somewhere not NA, so app availability is limited, moreso considering it posts as a "Unknown v700b".
It works well as a media station, 1080p content lagginess over HDMI is barely discernible. So I won't be using it to play any games, but it works alright for media/web access. ConnectBot doesn't exactly require much though, so YMMV.
The USB host is handy, MicroSD support up to 32G should be standard on all tablets IMO, lack of real camera isn't really that annoying for my usage.
Resolution is 800x480, so there's some interesting skewing when it's rotated in portrait mode, but nothing major.
Biggest issue I've seen thus far is an apparent lack of community support, but for a sub-par tablet from a company I haven't heard much of, that's not surprising.
I've tried a few of the RK29 root procedures out there, though without the firmware image it's proving more than a little difficult. I posted a thread on the Mediasonic (NA distributor?) forum about the availability of the ROM, and have followed up with an email to Envizen themselves without a response as of yet.
I'll post more info if I receive it, but would love to know if someone else has successfully rooted this little machine. Would be great to get the Synergy port working on it, not to mention all the other fun root-required apps.

Could you please elaborate? This Envizen is my first Android anything but I've tried to run root-required applications and I get a not rooted error. And I read the very little there is in the three threads mentioning rooting, in which two try to expain with one more a rant against anyone not using a unix based home computer than doing any explaining and the other being less than informative -to me, at least. I did try to follow and perform what I could decipher but I use XP and Win7, not any version if unix (and I haven't worked with a unix based computer in years so am not even that familiar with commands any longer) and I was not successful in obtaining root. I installed the necessary command application to run root commands but again the error was I did not have root access/authority.
If you would, could you please explain as if I'd never heard of Unix, newbie level? More persons than myself would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance. -Michael
