Market Install Process Questions - G Tablet General

Need clarifications on Market install procedure:
1. Calls for using "AndRootFile." I go to site to DL and it asks what phone to get right apk. Got no stinkin' phone. What do I put in? Or where can I get the apk for G-Tablet?
2. Procedure call for mounting R/W and making sure to make R/O when finished. How?
3. Guide for ADB setup at the end. Does that have to be done manually or do the files above take care of the changes? Or does the DL usb file replace the stock file?
4. i have had Gmail for a long time. Is anything other than a Gmail signon needed to set up market and the other apps?
Thanks for any help.

I was hoping a couple of quick answers would save me some time and uncertainty or maybe a mistake.
Anyone help?

1. There won't be a version of androot specifically for the G tab. Just find an androot apk and install it.
2. Refers to read/write, and read only. Once androot is installed it will have a selection allowing for you to be a Superuser, and to set r/w, or ro.
3. ADB is setup manually. It is run from a command line. The USB driver gets installed by hooking up your G tab by usb, don't mount it from the G tab though. Then run the driver program in windows to install the driver.
4. Yes, once it is all installed your Gmail login will do it all. There is a market fix that will need to be done also as the market will be really incomplete. The fix is easy...
5. I know you didn't have a 5, and you will think I am beating a dead horse. If you were to just install TnTLite2.2 all the work is done, your G tab will scream, and you will be done...

Thanks for the quick clarifications. Now a comment for your (5) comment.
I have thought of going ahead and flashing -- and yes I know that solves some problems. But aside from being conservative hardware wise:
1. My biggest objection to flashing is that there is no real way back to stock. Vanilla is not factory if I understand right. And I'm not sure cwm lets you make a restorable factory image. If I knew I could restore a factory image, it would make playing a little easier for me.
2. I'm not new to computers or OSes, but I am new to Android. There is a certain learning advantage in doing the various procedures -- the negative being that that makes me have to ask people like you for the little details I need.
3. Screaming is relative. Compared to my PDA and my netbook, my G already screams. And none of them scream compared to my gaming machine which is probably in the top 10 per cent speed-wise. So screaming would only make a little difference for me.
4. And then there the projected Dec. 19 update. I realize that VS has missed the boat several times in all of this, but it would be tooooooooo sweet if they incorporated a lot of the fixes and ideas voiced here into the update and make a stock machine even better.
5. Since you quit at five I will too. I really would like to have a $279 G-Tablet to play with, but I like in the country and even the nearby large city doesn't have either enough Sears or tech enthusiasts for me to get that lucky. If I had a second one, I could play a little more since I wouldn't necessary have to keep it working so I could use it.
Anyhow, thanks again for the clarifications and your comments. There is no dead anything around here, BTW!!!

Well I do understand why you want to do things the way you do. And just in case you may have not seen it. You can go all the way back to original by using NVFlash and the original images made way back a whole month ago. (Seems longer than that). I have done it a couple times while messing around with things that didn't work. Here is a little something I wrote up about how to do it..

I didn't know what to think when I read your #2 comment. I am not an expert by any means but is it really that bad to have to ask?
"2. I'm not new to computers or OSes, but I am new to Android. There is a certain learning advantage in doing the various procedures -- the negative being that that makes me have to ask people like you for the little details I need."
Anyway, hope it helped..

Number two is nothing except that I am pretty independent and usually I am the one doing the helping -- and I just dislike bothering other people for basic info.
One of my dislikes about the G-Tablet and Android is that there are not many really good "user" books available. Lots of Android programming books, but none that just tell how it works and what to do for common tasks, etc. And what can I say about the G-Tablet manual. It does a credible job of describing the hardware, but I wish they had a few chapters on basic operation.
Well, I guess some of this is just griping so I'll shut up.
Rev
P. S. -- Is there any particular version of "AndRootFile" that will work better than the others?

I think androot is the same. The supported list is likely just stuff they have tested it with. I usually use Root Explorer myself. Androot is free, Root Explorer costs a couple dollars but is easier to use, and more capable. I also use a file manager named Es File Explorer. It is free in the market and once you get the hang of how it works it can be used on the lan to move stuff between your pc and tablet, extract zip files, etc.
I don't know if there will ever be a good manual for Android. From what I can tell it is kind of a free for all out there. Does not seem there are very many real solid standards but there sure are a lot of variations.
I think most of the hardware for sale now is not really made by any of the companies with there name on it. The G tablet is sold by 3-4 different companies, just named differently. Seems they are at the mercy, and so are we of how well they can communicate what they want fixed to a company in another country. I wish there was a company that built a tablet in house that was open with the customers. Would sure make bug fixes, and feature changes easier. As it stands, they are happy to sell whatever they get.

Everyone.
You can close this thread as far as I am concerned. I worked with adapting a stock machine until I simply got tired of it. I have converted to TnT 2.20 at this time and am pleased so far. I will write more about the experience when I have time.

Can We See If It's Dying Before Scheduling the Funeral?

I have been reading the same information as the rest of you about the VS G-Tablet, Staples and now Sears.
And I wonder how everyone is coming up with such wild suppostions based on almost NO really factual information.
Staples recall of inventory is a fact. I noticed that they are returning stock to VS because of some kind of flaw. We don't know what it is. We don't know if it is terminal or fixable. We don't know anything about remedies.
But whatever it is, it's not serious enough for them to start calling or notifying customers to return units and get their money back?!? If it really is a fatal hardware flaw, surely they will not get by without taking care of customers who already have purchased tablets.
Seems to me we need more info about why Staples did what they did and what is wrong before anything realistic can be determined.
Also, someone reported Sears is following Staples' path. Not trying to flame the poster, but we have (1) a report of no stock in that area (No Big Deal -- we never had any here!! ); and (2) we have an employee (not likely management at the level that would cover Sears corporate operations) saying they've had a lot of returns and don't know when they'll get any (again, nothing new there). Certainly not a stock recall like Staples.
I was in one of the area Sears stores here today and the little cardboard display they put up when they don't have VS G-Tablets in stock was still there. In fact, it had been updated to show the $379.00 price available today.
My point is that until we find out what the problem is that Staples is using as a reason for their action -- we really are just wasting our time speculating. And I certainly think the news media and the A**** fanboys are just spewing the garbage I would expect of them.
Am I the only person around who has noticed that a pile of us -- ranging from devs and hardware experts, down to just every day good old folks -- have been using, programming and flogging the G-Tablet for what (five-six weeks now?) and not one of us has raised a report of a fatal flaw????????????????
Sure. Grant that VS and whoever didn't do an adequate job of development and rushed the G-Tab to market. Grant that the software is not what we think is needed nor what we want. I can see that if it worked faster and better, it might be okay for some basic users.
Those of us who want more seem to be doing all right.
And one by one we have been fixing things.
Speaking for myself, I am not writing off the G-Tablet yet. I have two -- one from Sears and one from Office Depot. I could run down and return both right now.
But I'm not. I'm going to use the stuff that is available to me now to make both work like I want. Whatever else someone may say, it will do what I want it to do with the resources we already have on hand. And unless everyone else gives up, I see no reason we can't go right on and stay ahead of all the folks who are not smart enough to see the potential and go after it.
I am the minister -- so please don't start on plans for the funeral until the patient is pronounced dead for real. I don't see anything remotely close to that yet!
Rev
P. S. -- Sorry this rant got so long, but I just felt someone had to put some balance into what is being said about all of this. And I intended no flames for anyone who may disagree with my point of view. I am a minister and I am redemptive -- it's my job to try to "save" things!!
100% agreed...
As long as they release the kernel source, I don't really care whether Viewsonic recalls all their G Tablets or not. Because I am 100% certain there will be lots of other Tegra 2 tablets which will ship with updated firmware, which will give us a base image for Gingerbread and for Honeycomb down the road. As long as there's somebody willing to compile kernels and glue a kernel into the ROM images from very similar devices, well, we'll be just fine here and the G Tablet will continue to provide us with plenty of useful life over the next few years.
From what I can see from an earlier thread about a poster mentioning using the fact that several of the abilities the gtablet has on the cover do not work out of the box to return the tablet without having to pay the restocking fee. I believe that Sears and Staples are sending the units back to viewsonic and demanding that the touted abilities actually do in fact work before they get them back. (this can only help the tablet unless Viewsonic decides to give up.)
I really hope it stays around, Bought one for the wife, now I want one. (I got a nook color that behaves even worse out of the box. but I figure i'll root/rom it until it does work as the smaller size is definitely more portable.)
Even if Viewsonic were to give up I don't see our tablet caring much. The Zpad firmware works pretty well, the VegaN that I am running now is working very well, and TnTLite works pretty well.
I feel for the customers that bought this and are not techies. I recall the first time I turned mine on it was a barrage of force closes. Everything you touched would force close. It took a factory reset from the settings menu to make it stop. Flash was non-existent, clock had amnesia on wakeup, wifi lost it's mind.... If I was a regular customer I would have been PO'ed... Not known what to do, and it would have gone back with a "I will NEVER buy another Viewsonic product ever" mentality.
If all the above had not occurred out of the box this tablet may have been kept by more people. I'm sure lots of folks would have been plenty happy if it just worked. Most would not have known the real potential that was being strangled by the software overlay, and most would not care.
I think the biggest issue has to do with how things are sold in this country nowadays. Back when America made things, they had control of them. They touched them, tested them, and had a lot of pride in making sure they sold a good product. Viewsonic gained it's reputation by selling one of the best products.
This tablet is not made by Viewsonic. I don't really know how much Viewsonic had to do with it besides just signing on to have there name on the device in hopes of name recognition boosting sales. It reminds me of how companies sign athletes to endorse crappy products in hopes people will buy it because of the name. That is going to bite a lot of companies in the behind. Unless my perception of how American companies desire to do business is completely wrong then this path needs to stop.
Everything seems to need to be done as fast as possible, and with profit being the main goal. Who cares if it is the best.. Who cares if it could be better.. Just get it out there and make money.. Support? Why should we support our product? Why should we put a restore image online? Why should we update our website with info that might help folks understand what is being done about the issues?
This same stuff is happening with lots of companies. Sylvania is another example of the outsourced spin off type of product, there are many others.
I think we deserve better, and if a company has to have there rear end handed to them to figure out that quality, and customer satisfaction still counts then so be it....
If and I mean if VS decided to bail on the gtablet I would think they open the source code to the community. This is a great device.
At this point it doesn't matter, even if viewsonic abandons it.
It's a reference tegra 2 device for current app developers in the states (at least that's how I see it), we have badass roms for it, the advent vega is getting 2.3 which is easily ported...so it's all good.
No mystery
Nice posts. But there is no mystery that VS is getting these back. It's about their profit from sales of a marketable product. Whether this tablet goes the wayof the Edsel is immaterial to us afficianados but its still been a good ride. I think other tabs may sink us but so what.
It's still fun.
Mojav
here's my take on it, and what they need to fix for Joe Consumer
I can readily guess why these are going back, and a Staples rep I talked to actually mentioned that same thing. The stock firmware is bad.
But I don't mean just the Tap N' Tap UI, I mean the boot loops and FC's that occur. We've all seen them, even on TnT Lite. There is some instability that I am convinced has to do with how these devices were imaged.
Here's the problem -- here in XDA, we have clockworkmod and a great community to get us around those issues. But Joe Consumer has neither (unless they search on their own). And due to TnT's stupidity, they can't even download an offline update to at least attempt to fix the problems. Think about it...you're a user with a reboot loop, so you call Viewsonic for help. What can they do? There's no way to wipe the cache, wipe user data or even re-flash the device using the standard tools. It's insane.
What they need to do ASAP is deploy a firmware update that 1) can be run offline with a microSD card and 2) has a more enhanced recovery like clockworkmod to at least give the user the ability to wipe the user data or cache. And, if the user doesn't have a microSD card, they should send them a 1GB card, preinstalled with the recovery image, at no charge. I think it's an absolute requirement I hope VS are reading this and rip their TnT devs a new arse to fix this debacle before they give up on the device completely.
Still, worse case scenario is that we lose VS support but still have the zPad and Vega to look at, even it we don't have source. We have options, at least.

I just got my g tab and am having all the issues u described out of the box. Internet crashes,WiFi dropping, force closes and all, did u just do the restart and it fixed everything? If so how do I do that and if u did more, what else do I have to do? I love my tablet and think it so much better than my friends ipad, but the issiues do bother me.....but I'll never return it, just want to fix it

When I got my very first device (before TnT Lite existed), it was terrible. Lots of FC's, and at least twice it rebooted on me for no reason and wiped my user data. As I recall, doing a manual data wipe helped but it was never really fully stable until I wiped it with nvflash (the bekit image).
Since then, they only time I've ever seen major instability is either when testing mods, which is understandable, or going back to stock.

Well.... We have to go back in history. (Only about 6 weeks ago)
The force closes "Might" go away if you can get into settings and find the factory reset selection. It may be under the privacy tab. I can't tell you for sure because I am not running TnT right now.
The wifi issue was a problem when the device woke up and there was a patch made by a smart guy named Bekit.
The time issue was something where the time zone would not stick. It would always reset itself back to GMT if I recall.
There were patches for all of them back then, and I had them all installed at one point. None are needed anymore.
My suggestion to you, if you actually want to keep the tablet is to read the instructions in the post below and flash a new rom. TnTLite is based on your stock firmware. It just has the bad parts removed, and good stuff put in. All of the major issues should hopefully go away. As Roebeet just told you Nvflash could be in your future to do a clean wipe but I hope not. The stock out of the box firmware is really bad. It is unfortunate because the hardware is really good.

No, nvflash is fairly advanced stuff so I wouldn't recommend it unless you are fairly technical or if its the last resort. You need APX drivers setup on your PC as well as the nvflash image.
Try a user data wipe, as a first step. In stock, it's under Settings and Security, I believe. If that doesn't help, I'd recommend clockworkmod recovery next and try to do a clear cache, user data wipe and a SD partition fix, in that order (do the next if the previous one doesn't fix it). I'd do nvflash last.
I personally love nvflash, but like I mentioned you need to be somewhat technical to use it.
See the FAQ area under my sig for some pointers and links, to start you off with.

NVflash is the bomb... Finding the full sdk anymore... that sucks
juda222000,
Hang in there. I have been working on my second G-Tab and when I started it up, it worked worse than the first one did!!!
But it seems to me like if you just keep using common sense and rebooting to give it time to sort things out, and then using the info in these forums to get it together -- all will turn out well and you will have a really great tablet.
Just be patient and don't get ahead of yourself and cause yourself grief like I have done a couple of times!! Best wishes....

I personally suspect that the fatal flaw is no high price contract with a network provider.
As was stated.....if there really was a fatal hardware flaw we would almost definately know about it on this forum. The stock UI was poor but still not fatal. I would tend to agree that we need far more info before jumping to a conclusion about the life expectancy of this most excellent device (after a few mods).

G Tablet coming tomorrow...would like to get some things set straight. Thanks.

Hey all,
I'm getting my G Tablet tomorrow and I'd just like to get some things clarified.
I know, the first thing some will say is USE SEARCH! Well, I did - and that's actually why I just want to get some things straight before I go down the path of modifying the device software. See, reading it all has managed to confuse me more than help me get a definitive instruction set for forging ahead.
I'm seeing the update "****s on CWM" according to a user...and then a 'fix' for that. Than I see that Gapps causes FCs for some, while it works for others. So...yeah, a little back and forth on what to do and who's instructions to follow.
Alright, so first thing's first....Should I flash the Clockwork Mod that I'm seeing available - 0.8? or is there something else I should consider or that I've missed? or maybe wait for a newer version? Should I even flash CWM if I get the newest (and I WILL be getting the newest) S/W version? Are there any downsides at all to flashing CWM on there in terms of messing with OTA updates, etc?
I read this:
"All the ROMS use a standard firmware updater that can be used by non-technical users. Here is an explanation on how it works:...."
Sooo, does that mean I can live without CWM? If an update doesn't work for some reason, will I be able to fix it or overwrite it somehow if I can't get into the tablet at all from the tablet itself? I read something about going into APX mode and putting things on through Windows, is this an infallible method?
Second of all, I read the FAQ thoroughly (I think and hope) but I'm still not 100% on what Gapps to DL or how to put a working Android Market on there especially with this new S/W update. I've seen how to 'fix' the Market to see missing apps, but not how to actually install it on the G Tablet. I may have missed that post somewhere on here.
I'm also unclear if I should get Gapps or not at all, as I've read that some have FCs on there while others do not - so what's the general consensus in light of this update that was just released as of Dec. 21, 2010?
Ultimately, here is what I'd like from my GTab:
I'd like to run the new official Tapn'Tap released recently first and foremost.
I'd like to have the official/unofficial (w/e) Google Market.
I'd like to run Google Apps (Gtalk, Gmail, etc.).
IF I don't like Tapn'Tap, and this is a worse case scenario situation, as in if I HATE TnT - I'd like to have the option to slap something else on there and I'd like to make sure I don't brick my Tablet. Whether that means storing an original official TnT ROM or whatever.
Point me in the right direction please, especially considering things may have changed as of the new S/W update.
Thanks much and sorry for all the questions. I assure you I used search and I attempted to put it together on my own. It's been a long time since I've modded (G1 was the last time) and I don't do it often. Also, apologies if I posted this in the wrong section....I considered posting it in Dev. section but this one seemed better suited.
Thanks again, XDA rocks.

I don't know how much direction pointing I can do but here goes..
Clockwork mod in my opinion is a necessity. Version 0.8 is the best one for most people because of how it deals with the memory locations. Yes, you can do things without it. The update process is as simple as putting an update.zip file, and a recovery folder with a command file in it on an sdcard and holding the vol + button while hitting power. It is easy. Clockwork has a lot of little features though that make life easier. You can make a complete system backup with it. You can install updates, and new firmware with it. You can completely lock up your tablet and using clockwork and your backup be back in business in about 3-4 minutes. You can load new roms and if you hate them you can go back to your old working stuff in minutes. Yes, there are ways to make one of these tablets work again when they get stuck. I don't think anyone has actually bricked one. Some may think they have, but I doubt it.
Unless you are dead set on wanting the stock TnT interface the easiest way to get what you want is to load one of the roms. Yes, there are ways to get most of it without loading a new rom. Most everyone that has gone the I have to stay stock but want all the mods has eventually just loaded a rom. TnT3.0 is based on the latest stock stuff. It has the market, flash, etc. already in it. VegaN is what I use mostly but they are both stable and fast.
Before you flash something brand new that just came out I would read about it and see what others have to say about issues. It usually only takes about 30 minutes until you can tell if it is going to be good or not.
All of the roms for this tablet have there own little quirks. The stock has gotten better with each update but it still is not as good as the ones I named.
Finally.. This tablet is very easy to play with. It is pretty much unbrickable. Anything you can possibly break one of us has probably already broken before and fixed. There are some people that seem to have problems doing every little thing. Most don't. So I wouldn't let any of it scare you off because none of it is that hard.
With a little bit of searching almost everything you may want it to do can be done. I really love mine, and when I got it almost 2 months ago I hated it...

"Sigh" of relief. Then I'm not too worried. As I said I've dabbled in modifying my G1 and it is mostly cake. But I've just been seeing conflicting posts on whether cwm works with the newest official tnt release or not so I wasn't sure what to do.
Thanks for your advice. And when I said pointers, I meant like this as well as pointing me to any posts I may have missed on how to do whatever. Though I THINK I found most of them.

The new release overwrites clockwork. But it is not hard to put back. Always a good idea to copy the clockwork backups folder to your pc, or somewhere they won't be lost. The custom roms typically leave the recovery image alone and can be installed with or without clockwork by either extracting the zip contents for stock recovery, or installing it as is in clockwork.

I can vouch for that. Erased system, boot, data and cache in preparation for a new ROM. Accidentally rebooted and couldn't get into recovery. Booted it into APX mode, flashed stock and was on my way.
I would just run ZRoot, then upload the TnTLite 3.0 recovery and update.zip and then do the recovery mode process. You should have a microsd handy just in case it doesn't work, but so far I haven't needed that.
This tablet is much easier to work with and very forgiving since VS never took the time to lock down the bootloader etc like Motorola did with my Droid X. You really shouldn't fear changing files out etc, provided you're getting a ROM from one of the people providing them here. If you can press and hold two buttons at once, you can make your gTab an awesome little tablet. It benchmarks about 1000 points higher than my Droid X on quadrant. Can't wait to see what these guys can do with Gingerbread.

It is also not hard to alter the update so that it does not overwrite clockwork.
Open update.zip
Find updater-script, Open in notepad++
Remove the line that references recovery.img

The very first time I rooted, I used ZRoot and installed 2.4.0. I didn't change anything and used the exact same process of simply copying over the 3.0.0 files over to the root directory of the internal memory and did the recovery procedure (vol+ and pwr keys). It worked like a charm.

My device hasn't come yet (damn you FedEx!) but I'm eagerly awaiting it.
My plan:
Unbox, start it....do a factory reset from the getgo if it has enough juice.
Set it back up. Charge it to full. If whatever comes on it is as unbearable as I've seen in on Youtube - start modifications.
Will CWM install on it AFTER I do the update if it's available to me? I've seen that the update messes with it if it's already there - but noone's mentioned putting it on there after the fact. I may just go that route for simplicity sake.
Thanks for this!, and thank you all for chiming in with your experience. I feel much better about just getting my hands dirty in it all. I had wrote something to someone yesterday about jumping in and just doing it, but when it comes to dealing with it yourself it can be a daunting task - especially when it still has that new smell, lol. Anyway, thanks again. You guys really rock.
Will stop back later on after I've done my thing
I think they are both nice devices. There are trade off for both of them. I think the screen on the iPad is wonderful, where the gTab's is okay. But the gTab has a forward facing camera, you can print from it, and you can modify it fairly easily too.

Seriously though...trust the directions from the great devs like roebeet. Follow their instructions word for word. You can switch ROMs and then flash back if you want. No worries...
Off topic!
Well...disappointment! Fedex had my package out for delivery at 8am and at 8pm, they're not here. This is why I like UPS, they show up at my door on the day of delivery, no exceptions - they have shown up at almost 9pm before. The Archos 101 I got was sent out at 8am as well but got here at 1:30pm - I suppose that was before the holiday rush.
Checking the details of my tracking I'm seeing a "delivery exception" at 7:30pm (I guess it was time to get back to the facility so they can clock out by 8pm?) and upon calling them I get a somewhat stumbling but polite CS who tells me the delivery went out "late" - upon which I asked if 8am was considered late, especially from a distribution facility WITHIN the same zip code as I am, and all he could say was "Very sorry about this".
Aaaanyway....I guess it will be tomorrow before I can report my adventures.
Think I'll be able to get my $3.99 back from Amazon? I have Prime and with that the package would have come tomorrow anyway. Basically my $3.99 is wasted. Imagine if I didn't have Prime though? Whew.

If you can figure out how to brick it you will probably get an award.. It won't be a good award but probably one of those top ten dumb things people do awards. So far unless you plug the motherboard into a wall socket no one has bricked one. May think they have, but like I said before I doubt it..
And your right.. If it can be done, someone eventually will figure out how. And then we will all laugh at them.. At least I will
I finally got the G tablet tonight and...alright, don't flame me for this - but I don't see what all the complaints about the screen being horrendous or the device being molasses slow are about?
I don't know how people are trying to view it...but when looking at it or setting it on a stand to watch media, I'm not seeing any problem with the viewing angles. It's about the same as my laptop so I watch it the same way.
It's not even a 1/4 as slow as the stuff I've seen on Youtube or in some of the review videos I've seen around the net. I haven't gotten a single FC. Granted, I haven't put in a SD Card yet so maybe problems will start then?
I guess I should note, the very first thing I did was did a factory reset. Then I hooked it up to Wifi and got the 3053 update. I'm one of those who will be waiting for the 'official' update on the 24th.
I set up the time and date, restarted and everything works. I haven't installed flash yet (don't need it that much) and stuff that I DO want on there right now works fine (skype, pandora, fring, dropbox, evernote). I'm slowly figuring out a list of what I want/need from my Mytouch 4G to port to the VS GTab. Figure I don't really NEED Gtalk, Gmail on there because I have these on my phone AND PC - do I really want them making noises all around my home on 3 devices? I was concerned about getting the Google Apps on but now I'm finding I really don't need them. So it seems to me this will be a matter of learning to separate what I need on a tablet vs. my phone - I was of the mentality that I should just get whatever's on my phone on the tablet, this is something others apparently do as they seem to want everything that's on their phone, on their tablets as well.
I personally don't see the point in that. Had I had the Google Market, that would have escaped me as I'd have used Appbrain to just get my motherload of apps from the MT4G to the GTab. Not having it has slowed me, and now I get to re-evaluate before I do grab apps for it.
Now I just have to merge/convert my HTPC into a NAS device as well and find an app that will allow me to DLNA stream media from it and I'll be in mobile heaven.
I haven't had my wifi drop at all anywhere in my home and I've marched all over with it (I use full Wifi N, no G compat. so maybe my range is wider?). Tried email, etc. to replicate crashes and force closes but haven't so far. No surfing issues. I DID find that one app got 'stuck' being downloaded and I had to delete the file before the 'downloading' icon would go away, even after restart.
Maybe the trick to getting a workable GTab in the first place is to factory reset it before first use? Iunno. Things may change and issues may pop up the more I use it and as time passes - but so far, so good!
Again, I can't thank XDA enough for the advice and info. I've found and been given.

I figured it out. Accidentally hit one of the devkit nvflash .cabs and boom

Original Impression - Is this for real?

I bought this Gtablet when my wife and I were out doing last minute Christmas shopping on Friday afternoon. No actual live unit on display or available at Sears so bought one based on hope. My first impressions were very mixed. It was painfully slow when I first booted it up while waiting for my wife who had gone into another store and I waited for her in the car (plugged in using inverter we carry with us). Later when we got home it downloaded the update and that helped the speed issue (but still sluggish) but I've run into all kinds of issues that have me ready to return this thing.
First thing I noticed is the number of times that apps force close on the GT including the browser built into the unit. That is about to drive me nuts but I discovered another even more major issue - for me. I planned to use this device to log into our webmail server when I'm travelling in order to get my mail. I can log into the webmail and I can bring up the mail but when I open a piece of email I cannot scroll the screen to read the entire email. I also have a Moto DX and I can read my email via web just fine on that (don't like it because of the small screen and keyboard). So, why does my DX work fine with our webmail client and the GT not work? I am clueless and ticked off.
I was going to return it today but my wife wants me to hold off and call Viewsonic support but I have my doubts that they will be of much help. So, I'm wondering if putting up a custom ROM might help because of using a different kernel?
I have a couple of weeks to return this but I want it either working or gone so I have a proposal. I'm new to Android and don't want to take the chance of bricking this and losing my money and I need this done quickly in order to make a decision. I"m willing to pay a modest fee for someone "KNOWLEDGEABLE" to possiby teamviewer into one of my machines to to root/rom this unit. There would absolutely have to be a return to stock method in case the new rom doesn't work either.
I have a Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit machine, Win 7 Prof. 64 bit and a Win XP 32 bit machine available to use. In reading through a number of threads here it seems that various iterations of Windows have issues with the drivers for this. You can PM me here.

Unless you mess around with the bootloader, you cant really brick it. Nobody has yet, and I doubt you would be the first.
Also I reccomend this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885940
It is like A lite eversoin of TNT lite. It speeds it upi while keeping it stockish.
Many of us understand your experience. Most of us acknowledge that the first software was not what it should have been.
I have a modded machine which is super. I have an OTA 3389 tablet which is more than acceptable.
From your comments, it sounds to me like your plan to return is the best course of action.
The G-Tablet can be a super machine, but not without some interest in working with and improving it on your part.
Sorry this is not better news. Maybe someone else will respond with a different idea.

Yep, just check the dev forum for instructions on installing new custom firmware. I'd also recommend making sure that you install clockwork mod 0.8 to ease backup/restores.
...OTOH from what I've heard is that the new stock fw 3389 is quite a bit better than what it ships with. And from there you can add a few minor updates, rooting, maybe the performance pack, sideload some apps and possibly the market "fix" which might be good enough for you, but even then I'd really have to recommend installing clockwork mod simply for the ease of making an image of a nicely working modified system and then being able to restore that if something messes it up...
Tablet is really nice, stable, and fast once properly setup and it's not really too hard to do any of the above IF you FOLLOW the instructions and READ them ENTIRELY and the caveats BEFOREHAND.
Really it's almost plug and play...

Here's a trick that works for me: if I zoom in a little on the webmail page that I cannot scroll, after the zooming in I am able to scroll to view the entire email.
I guess that soon you'll find the lack of Copy/Paste. Apple was run out of town for this and Windows Phone 7 too. At least with the G Tablet the lack of Copy/Paste seems to be limited to the stock apps.

Thanks John for that suggestion!! It worked and I can read my email from the G. That makes me happy.
Now for a new issue, I formatted a 16gig SD (FAT32) and put that in, the unit says that it knows that it is there but when I connect the unit using the USB cable to my Win 7 (64) machine its finds the machine, I tell it to activate USB transfer mode but I don't see SD2 in there. I wanted to transfer a pile of music onto it but can't do that since I can't see it. I tried transferring the music directly to the sd and then putting it into the G but when I do that it doesn't find anything.
I didn't really find anything on point in searching so if I'm missing that please point me to the thread.
I think I will go ahead and work with this. I've used and moded Win Mobile phones for the last ten years but am new to Android.
The offer for help still stands if anyone wants to take advantage and I would like to use it as a learning experience as I get into Android.
Oh yeah, thanks to all for the super fast responses. That is really appreciated. Even though it only shows that I have 5 or six posts here that isn't quite accurate. Many years ago when this site first opened I found it because I was using XDA phones but those were all WinMO at the time. I drifted away for a long time and when I came back now I am a new member again here. No longer a WinMo user and I really don't like Windows Phone 7 so I bought a Moto DX and love the phone, got my wife an HTC Incredible (she gave up her iPhone for that and that took a LOT of convincing on my part) but I am pretty much really happy with the Android OS and where it seesm to be going.
What I do love about the G is the size, the Galaxy Tab is just too small and the 800 horizontal resolution is too small so when I found a 10" tablet with 1024 and only $379.95 it sounded like a great deal. The screen angle is a ***** but I can live with that but I am sorely missing the Market (GMarket is sad). Looking forward to getting this machine rooted and rom'ed and up and running like it should be.

Install the latest update and do a factory restore inside the security section of settings.
Then if you want install the tnt enhancement pack from the device section. Don't worry about returning to stock because they don't even open the box when you return or exchange. If they did, they would have no idea what they would be looking at.

You should be able to see the microsd on the Gtab using, for example, ES File explorer. It'll be at /sdcard2.
As for seeing /sdcard2 from your pc, I thought I saw a post saying that if you have winamp installed on the gtab, it has an option for mounting sdcard2, and when that's enabled you can see /sdcard2. Haven't tried that myself.

P.S. Here's the thread about winamp and sdcard2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880237&highlight=winamp
Ahead of the game.
Hi racedog, actually I think you are ahead of the game. You seem to have made a lot of progress if you bought this Christmas eve.
How did you get it to run in the parking lot of the mall on Christmas eve? Even with a power inverter for power, hoe did you get a WiFi connection?
So far my G Tablet is stock and I am over-all happy with it. However, after Viewsonics post that they won't be providing any support for swapping the LCD screen, I feel they are missing the point. Their post said they would be anouncing some new products soon (my guess is at CES right after the first of the year).
I might end up taking my G Tablet back to Sears and waiting for the newer, more powerful and maybe more promising second generation tablets I am sure are to come at CES.
This tablet has been fun and I may keep it, but, I would really like to know the price points on the new models at CES.
Sucks out of the box.
Erase it and start over.
Load Clockwork Recovery Mod first! Put the update.zip on the sdcard, don't worry about the external SD method.
Once you have that boot mod, it's next to impossible to screw it up.
Flash that then get TNT lite 3.1.0 plus the supplement
Make sure you format the SDCARD using the advanced menu 2048 and 0 swap r it will crash on ya.
Do the full market fix. Download Dolphin HD and you will have a very usable tablet.

I will be doing the clockwork mod and putting on a new rom. The question is about formatting the card. You mention above used "advanced menu 2048", I don't know where I would find that on android on the G, or are you referring to something else?
I didn't get it connected while in the car, I just had it plugged in so that I could take a look at it and start putting a charge on it. I didn't connect until I got home. However, I DID try connecting it in the car using my Moto DX with wireless tether. The dx showed that it was running but the G never found the signal from the phone. It did see a few other secured wifi connections but it didn't see the phone. I have no idea whether this was because I don't have wifi tethering setup correctly on the DX or what the deal is but I figured I would work with that later.
I don't really care if I have to tether via usb with the phone but wifi is a lot cleaner and easier if possible. I know that easy tether and pdanet are out there but I haven't checked to see if they have an android client yet, I've only used them on my Win 7 netbook.

I found that the stock rom cannot use ad-hoc networks. I had to use the hack for the 3G Hotspot app on the DX to get it working on the Gtab. Once I upgraded to TnT lite than I was able to use Wireless Tether and stopped getting all the drops and reconnects too.
I really think that you will be happy with this as soon as you mod it with what's here in this community. I have only been here for less than a week and have found answers to all my questions. Good luck.

I appreciate the offer but because of the holidays I won't be able to take you up on it until probably Tuesday, maybe tomorrow Monday if I get REALLY lucky. I going to be trying to do as much as I can myself until them.
I wondered if the problem might be that the stock rom did not recognize ad hoc networks because I looked for the option to select it and it was not there. Thanks for that info.
R
Forgot, the winamp solution didn't work. I selected the mount option in winamp but it did nothing. I will get back to this issue once I get the greater issue of the rom and wifi connect to my phone fixed. Those are the real biggies that need fixing first.
R
Thanks to rothnic this new G has CWM installed and tnt like running on it along with Market and other apps that I've downloaded from it. What a huge difference this makes, my constant FC's seem to have stopped happening and I am now very happy with this unit. What a world of difference.
The screen is still a major issue but I can live with it (for now, will keep watching the screen swapping thread) but the device is fast, functional and completely usable whereas 24 hours ago I was set to return it to Sears but my wife talked me out of that and to try fixing it.
Again, special thanks to rothnic for all the "above and beyond" help and patience and also to all of the Gtab community here for the help and suggestions.

[Q] Lagfix, Voodoo, Rooting, and other questions

First off, hey all! My first ever post to the forums. I figured it'd be big enough I should skip using the XDA app for now, but I did get it, and it's neato.
I'm using a brand new Samsung Mesmerize, unrooted, stock Eclair 2.1-update1. I considered grabbing the Froyo leak, but the whispers I'm picking up are the USCC is releasing it either this month or next, or at the very least, "soon".
I've got a lot of questions that are loosely tied together, but I didn't really find any answers to my questions specifically on the forums. For the most part, I get *how* to actually do the procedures I'm mentioning thanks to the AWESOME newb guides on this forum, so these are more conceptual or clarification questions I guess.
1. Rooting. Should I really be worried by it? I know it's really easy with the one-click root apps out there, but I'm more concerned with that whole "warranty voiding" part. Should I really be the concerned by it if I'm not comfortable with it, or is it not that big a deal as long as I'm careful with my phone and don't do anything that would actually require warranty work (cracking the screen, etc.)?
2. Is Voodoo the only real "viable" or "best" lagfix, or are there others? Although I'm a Windows guy in the IT field, I more or less grasp the Ext4 filesystem Voodoo uses, and stock Mesmerize does not. Is that fact what makes Voodoo the aforementioned "only viable" lagfix out there, if that's the case?
3. In spite of the ease of rooting from z4root (if I have the name right), I'm hoping to avoid rooting for as long as possible (though, see question 1). If there are other viable fixes out there, will I need to root the phone to use them?
4. If I do end up going with Voodoo, I see that it doesn't require rooting, which is cool. Does having a custom kernel itself technically void the warranty however, or just rooting? .....am I too worried about rooting and it's not actually that big a deal warranty-wise?
5. If using Voodoo, can I select which of the Voodoo fixes I want to use? I'm really only after the lagfix, and I *think* I like my colors just fine (that said, I'm not necessarily opposed to going with any color fixes if I just don't know what I'm missing)
6. I've also picked up that I can maybe do something about my battery life, and that there are other speed increases/battery utilities people are using; I came across this thread while searching for lagfix answers, and saw the poster is using "SGS tools". Is that something I should also look into?
7. I've noticed that some ROMs don't have all apps/hardware working just yet. Is that something I'd need to worry about with loading just a custom kernel like Voodoo? The Voodoo Documentation page seems to mention Kies won't work in Ext4 mode, but that's all I see affected an unrooted, otherwise-stock unit. How badly will I really miss Kies if at all? ...or, what does disabling lagfix (the suggested solution if you want to use Kies) actually do to the filesystem?
I think that's all for now---sorry for the rapid barrage of questions, but hopefully this will tell me if I need to worry about rooting, and if Voodoo is the way for me to go, and if I need anything else and I'm just not aware of it yet. Thanks for helping out a new guy, all!
First off, welcome. I will try and answer what I can and some of the more experienced guys will surely throw in their thoughts as well.

We have the stock operating system available to us if you would be concerned about warranty issues. You can always just flash back to that and no one would ever know you were rooted
Voodoo is the best and only kernel that we have available at this time.
3. In spite of the ease of rooting from z4root (if I have the name right), I'm hoping to avoid rooting for as long as possible (though, see question 1). If there are other viable fixes out there, will I need to root the phone to use them?
You don't have to root but there's really no reason not to. Gives you so many more options than stock and you can get rid of the junk USCC wants you to have
4. If I do end up going with Voodoo, I see that it doesn't require rooting, which is cool. Does having a custom kernel itself technically void the warranty however, or just rooting? .....am I too worried about rooting and it's not actually that big a deal warranty-wise? See above answer about warranty. I would guess changing anything to the stock software technically voids warranty though
5. If using Voodoo, can I select which of the Voodoo fixes I want to use? I'm really only after the lagfix, and I *think* I like my colors just fine (that said, I'm not necessarily opposed to going with any color fixes if I just don't know what I'm missing) the color fix is not available in our current versions of voodoo. The voodoo fix for 2.1 has the sound options in it. Voodoo for 2.2 is strictly lagfix. Make sure you get all your files from the Mes forums or you can run into problems.
6. I've also picked up that I can maybe do something about my battery life, and that there are other speed increases/battery utilities people are using; I came across this thread while searching for lagfix answers, and saw the poster is using "SGS tools". Is that something I should also look into? I've never used the SGS tools but I don't believe it fully works on our phone. Battery life will be greatly improved with Voodoo.
Kies is used for nothing except for upgrading to 2.2 which is already available through Odin without using Kies. Make sure you read through the forums and instructions when doing anything though. Disable lagfix before you flash anything to be safe.
I think that's all for now---sorry for the rapid barrage of questions, but hopefully this will tell me if I need to worry about rooting, and if Voodoo is the way for me to go, and if I need anything else and I'm just not aware of it yet. Thanks for helping out a new guy, all!

Hope I helped some. Most important just make sure you read and re-read before you jump in.
IMHO, I believe that if you are going to spend the money for the device, service and insurance, you deserve to have the latest software available and complete access to your phone. I'm not worried about warranties, (I'm not even sure how long it even is for this phone), cause I'm almost certain I will never have to use it because I have insurance in case of any unfortunate event. That part is entirely up to you. The roms and kernels available for the mesmerize on this forum are completely stable(from my experience) and are without a doubt worth any time put in understanding the processes involved. Just be sure you know what you are doing, read, reread and make backups. My two cents.
Hope this helps, and welcome to the xda forums; it's a pretty neat place.

So an update (for those actually watching and who care, haha):
I did end up deciding to root my phone, especially after bigmike's response. Yeah, why *shouldn't* I get to play with my new toy to the fullest extent? So I grabbed z4root, and I didn't even have to pull the battery, it just... did it. It was great.
I've been using Wireless Tether for Root users as my tethering app, and am in fact posting from my laptop in that way. Byebye Verizon aircard! I know it'll chew the battery up faster, but it means I don't need to actually physically tether, so I can keep USB Debug mode off and charge/transfer files that way. My laptop is always plugged in, so the phone should never actually die while wifi hotspotting. ...I didn't turn on encryption, but I did turn on access control, and I think I'll even scale back the broadcast strength of the phone's wifi while within Wireless Tether; the phone is literally inches from the laptop.
Still struggling with putting Voodoo on the phone... I need to find a good rooted-compatible file manager so I can see non-app files I put on my SD card from my SGS. After that I can follow bdemartino's Newbie Guide from step 2 (RomManager and CWM).
My trouble has been that the one that's recommended in his thread is a paid app, but is in Euros, and I can't seem to purchase it; just puts a hold on my account and looks like a suspicious charge to my credit card company. ....So, any recommendations on a preferably free, or at least USD-listed, root-compatible file manager?

Keep in mind that the step you're referring to is for customizing your phone with 2.1, you don't need to do that if you're planning on going to 2.2 (EB16) Rom Manager isn't used for that process at all.
Unfortunately either way you will need a root file explorer (file manager with root access), but I'm not sure what you mean by having issues purchasing Root Explorer - it's listed as 4.02 USD on my phone... Anyway, all you need is a file manager with root access (just a quick search shows me that Ghost Commander File seems to be a good free alternative)

I suspect not yet. I think I'm going to hang about and wait for the official release---am I correct in understanding that, at least according to rumors, it's coming sometime in the next couple months? I'm friends with a USCC office employee, and that's what he seemed to think, but didn't know any specifics.

It's weird. It's listed the same on mine (~$4.02 USD), but then when I proceed with the purchase process, it changes over to €2.50 (I think is the equivalent value), and won't charge my credit card. It's *possible* they just flagged the purchase as suspicious because it's so small and from a source I don't usually purchase from, outside of the fact it's listed in Euros, but I can't be sure. It's also possible that it won't go through because it's a debit card rather than a credit card.
In any case, I'll give Ghost Commander File a try. Thankee sir!

I'm not sure why you're even messing with your phone if you're going to wait? Having root gives you the access to the system folders/files, but nothing else really...
EB16 2.2 is completely stable and (IMO) is far superior to our customized 2.1 release (minus the fact that since we're waiting for official 2.2 source to make an undervolted kernel yet, it's not as battery efficient as 2.1)
Either route you go, we have an installation that will take you back to 2.1-update1 as if you just pulled it out of the box. (so long as you cleared your sd card) so you're able to go back to stock and then update to US cellulars 2.2 when it releases (which will be slow and full of bloat, so why wait?)
As far as your market issue, it sounds to me like the problem is on your credit card companies end - I purchase things all the time and they sometimes charge me in EURO or whatever else - but I have no issues.
If I were you, I'd do a hell of a lot more reading on the forums while you decide, because it doesn't sound like you've completely got your mind wrapped around all of it yet It takes time though....

I really only wanted to worry about rooting for two reasons.
First, I'd seen the lag issues being mentioned, and how I'd noticed it on my own phone. It's not *terrible*, but... it's there. So speeding things up with a lagfix was definitely something I wanted to worry about. I know I don't need to root to run Voodoo, but I was also concerned about having to worry about flashing a kernel onto the phone as opposed to just finding a simpler lagfix app; the ones I was seeing did require a rooted phone. I ended up not going with any of the other lagfixes as they just seemed less optimal than Voodoo, which is why I wanted to load that up.
The other big goal was to be able to tether (be it with cable or as a wifi hotspot), and I knew that depending on the app I went with, I might need to root. I ended up going with Wireless Tether, which does require a rooted phone.
That said, you're not wrong; if I found a wifi hotspotting app I liked that didn't require a root, I suppose I could take it off, but.... the tinkerer in me finally won out over that stick in the mud worried about warranties (see above). XD

That's another thing I need to keep in mind, which makes me wonder if I shouldn't change my plans and just go ahead with EB16 2.2. With the wifi hotspotting I plan to do, I cringe just a bit at having even less battery efficiency, but since the plan is to cable it to the laptop for charging while I'm doing that, I don't think I need to worry about it.
However, I seem to recall reading somewhere in the EB16 2.2 thread that Voodoo wasn't working with it yet...? Am I just making that up and/or has that been fixed...? I'm almost positive there was a reason other than "US Cellular is releasing the official one 'soon' " that made me want to wait on the leaked version...

Ouch, though I suppose the truth hurts. I suspect you're not wrong about that either though. but it's a lot to take in. I've never really worked with Linux, so I've got no base PC knowledge to draw from, and I still require a google/wikipedia visit for a lot of the terms thrown around here. XD
So yeah, if Voodoo works for EB16 2.2, maybe that should really be my next step. ....and by the looks of your guide, the next step after going to EB16 2.2 is to grab Voodoo, so I guess that answers that question. XD
I'll keep reading, but I think you're right, I'm starting to get a craving for Frozen Yogurt.
You are aware you have a 5GB data cap with USCC right? If you are planning on using tethering as your main internet source you could easily blow through that very quickly.

I suspect you're right--my bank has rather a lot of security protections in place, which has been annoying in the past, but I'm sure the first time it saves me from some financial disaster I'll finally say I'm glad they're there. XD

As far as I know, you need to have root in order to flash anything through recovery, so you would need it to flash the voodoo kernel. Root seems more scary than it should, it does indeed "void" your warranty (if you were to turn the phone in with it still rooted) but the scarier stuff comes when you go to flash things, because that is where you can really mess your phone up if you're not careful.
As far as your knowledge, I come from the same background - 0 experience with linux. After about a month of reading and researching and actually looking into the .apk/.jar file types I was pleased to see that it was very similar to a PC. In fact, if you actually decompile the files it's mostly XML and Java script, packaged within the .jar/.apk file types.
I hope I didn't offend you with that comment, I just want to stress the importance of having an understanding of all of this before attempting any of it - as it seems people jump right into flashing as soon as they register on the forum - then come running when things don't work - so those comments are really more directed at the community in general.
And lastly, pay attention to what Akellar said in the previous post - as if you go over your limit they may look into "why" and see that you've been wirelessly tethering and may charge you for that service. We have had one guy admit that he did this and lucky for him the agent he spoke to was kind enough to cut the overage in half after he showed him the MOD's he did, lol - we all may not be so lucky so just be careful. 3G Watchdog is perfect for monitoring that.

Not that I've messed around with JavaScript or XML much... XD I was into the more web-based languages (if one could argue that's the primary use for those two) when it was... HTML3-4? I kinda got out of it, and never really kept up with playing with it. I'm sure I could work with the syntax and figure it out (eventually, LOL).

I'm applying aloe to my pride. ROFL XD But seriously, I happen to show a brief glimmer of wisdom and read the forum rules, which mentioned that users that speak different primary languages post to this forum, and that it's generally a good idea to take what's posted with a grain of salt since that's the case. I know we're both from the midwest, but it was still a good thing to remember. And like I say, you're not wrong, currently page 14/35 of the Froyo leak thread. XD

You are aware you have a 5GB data cap with USCC right? If you are planning on using tethering as your main internet source you could easily blow through that very quickly.

I can't help but have a small part of me think it's foolish to not be worried about it, but.... I've had an aircard with Verizon for 2 years now, and another of the big reasons my girlfriend and I wanted to get smartphones is so we could eliminate that bill entirely by being able to tether one way or another. I bring it to work every day as my internet while I'm here, and when we travel to Wisconsin or Illinois to see our respective families, it's my internet when I'm actually on my laptop there as well (more IL than WI, Dad is tech savvy and has his wifi setup). In the two years I've had the aircard, I've only ever piqued 2 GB of usage (heck, most of the time I can keep it just under 1 GB) was for a major World of Warcraft content patch *after* we'd left for Illinois, and then streaming Blizzcon while in WI when Dad's wireless was having issues.
Apart from that, we've got a local carrier's 25 MB download cable internet at home, so while it does get usage a fair amount of the time as far as hours of the day and days of the week, I'd still call the cable my "primary". I try and limit the youtubing and such to while I'm at home because, at least while I was using the aircard, it loaded too slowly anyway (bad reception in the building here).
That said, I'll still be trying 3G Watchdog, if for no other reason than I have no idea how having a phone with a data plan will change that dynamic.
Alrighty, back to reading the Froyo leak thread for me. Still looking for where Voodoo got okay'd for the Froyo leak, and maybe a link to the version that includes CWM pre-loaded. ;D
Sooo, I'm on page 26 of 32 of the Froyo EA11 leak thread, but I'm starting to actually wonder---*does* Voodoo work for this build yet? I mean, I see the [KERNEL] voodoo for eb11 fix release thread, but... it just sounds like it's not quite ready, or more to the point, not quite ready for a little nublet like me who's not looking to tweak, just run Froyo + Voodoo Lagfix as his lifeline phone...?
Also, what's the difference between EB11 and EB16? Just a build number of the versioning, kinda thing? What about the terms "AOSP" and "Showcase"?
Seems like you're right, I'm not quite ready to go flashing my phone until I know just which one I want to put on there, and whether or not Voodoo is supported yet. The guide says it is, but I haven't yet caught a post in the EB11 thread that says "okay guys, Voodoo kernel is now supported" or whatnot. Just got done reading through the thread, and it just suddenly switches over to people saying Voodoo works now. ...am I missing some conversation, like from the IRC channel or something? XD

EB11 is for the Cell South Showcase and isn't what you want to use on your mesmerize. The EA11 voodoo works fine on EB16 for now. It will be updated to add a few more tweaks once the official release is out.

See above for EB11 vs EB16. Also AOSP is Android's stock UI I believe. (someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong) THe Showcase is the Cell South version of the Mes.

Again, nothing you read in the EB11 thread applies to the Mes.
Eb11 is the build for cellular south's Showcase, the same model of phone as the mesmerize. The difference is in the software, ea11 and/or eb16 is what you want for the mesmerize. Ignore that thread unless you have a showcase. voodoo for the mez works fine, just no sound control or color fixes as there is no official source code to work on.
as for the wireless hotspot... You have nothing to worry about unless you go over your 5 gig cap. I watch net flix on my laptop via the hot spot sometimes and I don't think ive even reached 4 gigs..on top of my typical usage

Akellar did a nice job answering your question, but I thought i would add that AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project, and as Akellar stated - it's the "stock android rom" meaning no other manufacturer changes to the software (such as touchwiz, etc.)
You should try the vanilla froyo its crazy fast!!! Because I got 2300 on quadrant!!!!

[Q] Captivate/Rooted Trouble with NES/ROMS

Hello. I have done all the research I think I can possibly do. I hate to ask away but here goes. Lets start by saying I am some what new to the concept of customizing my device. I started with an iPhone (i know) and decided I was ready to change to Android for more of an experience. I chose the Captivate because it fit my budget, specs were nice, and I've been with AT&T for ten years. I browsed the internet for a couple of weeks and brushed up on the terms, and concepts of rooting my device. I felt I had learned enough and rooted my phone. To tell the truth, being able to use an emulator to play old 8bit games on my phone sold me on the rooting idea. My root works great and I have all the apps I need to maintain it. I am still learning though and have hit a BUMP in the road. I can't get my games to "play". They load fine after being zipped, and look ready to go, but I'm getting no sound, and the "buttons" don't work. It shows the game, with options for 1 player or 2 players, but I am basically stuck. When I click on the screen it just vibrates. I am using the Nesoid emulator. DroidEmuROMget for my ROM (only thing out there I could find since ROMgrabber recently has been removed) and AndroZip to unzip. All this I can do from my phone. My main question out of this BOOK I just wrote is. Am I doing something wrong? Bad ROM? I want to learn what to do, and can't get the right info, so any help is appreciated. Thanks!
