[Q] Can/should I send my TF to ASUS for repair and its rooted - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
Just realized that it appears my screen is dead. Have been charging my TF but there is no response when turning it on or attempting to use it. I have tried different outlets and still the same result. When I plug the usb into the computer it recognizes the drivers and attempts to install them. To me this means that the unit is on but the screen is not. Since I have a rooted version, I do not want to take back to Best Buy to exchange it. I have contacted Asus and they said since it is under warrenty I can send it in for repair. My question is, since it is rooted and I can not access/use my TF, I can not restore it to stock. Will this be a probably? IF they replace the screen I will still have my rooted TF but Im not sure what they will do once they recognize that it has been rooted (using Prime Rom so as soon it starts you notice it different/rooted). Is there another way anyone knows i can unroot my TF since i have no access to the screen. Thanks.

If Best Buy will let you exchanged it I would go that route. See if they have any B60 or older if not than send to Asus

They wont let me exchange it because I bought it is after the 30 day return policy and I got it on sale (using the Staples $100 off coupon that was offered) They said that I could return the TF and my extended warrenty and get refund but I would only get the 300 I paid and would need to pay the difference to get a new one. I was thinking of going thru ASUS but I didnt know what will happen if they see that the TF has been rooted. Im pretty sure they will void the warranty but Im not sure what that means to me (they wont return, need to pay money repair it, etc)

You can try to stock-nvflash it while the screen is dead. I got this problem too and my TF couldnot go thru with nvflash. I had no choice but returned it (rooted) and they fixed it without problem.

Thanks Hype! How did you stock-nvflash if the screen is dead? Glad that it worked for you (sending it in rooted). I am hoping that the same will be for me. Again thanks for your input.

Stock nvflash only requires that you can enter apx mode. Just go into apx mode, plug your tf into pc, and nvflash away.

My Transformer just randomly bricked :)

So I have a US Transformer, did the 4/23 OTA update a couple days ago. Everything works fine. Haven't even rooted yet because I was holding off for a little bit. Then today I was switching wallpapers, it rebooted, now it gets to the lockscreen and wont register finger touches So it's just stuck on the lockscreen. Haha. Currently searching the forums if anyone else has had this problem, but just wanted to rant.
Going through stock recovery, currently wiping data, hopefully it will restore to usable state **Crosses fingers**
I find it odd that you used so many smiles on such a horrible situation.
It's doubt it's bricked. Use the force power off method (10-12sec power button hold). Then wait 30 secs, restart (5-6 power button hold), then disable the lockscreen if it boots. Repeat this a few times, if still no joy RMA it.

Eh it sucks yes, but I'm being hopeful something I try will work to fix it instead of sending it back to ASUS / returning it, and waiting 50 million years for a replacement.

How can I disable the lockscreen? It boots straight up to the lockscreen and it wont register any finger touches to unlock. Then if I press the power button, black screen and I have to force power off. I tried the stock restore method, vol down + power, press power up when prompted, then power up again, but it just ends with the android and (!) symbol, then reboots and begin cycle again, I tried it again just to make sure.
Haha. I think I'm going to ADB in, put in CWM and pray I can flash a ROM over that way. Was waiting to root, but I guess I might as well jump the gun now.
Have you tried attaching a mouse? Maybe the touchscreen is not working but with mouse you will be able to unlock the screen?

Thanks for the tip, but I don't have the proper cables
But I had enabled USB debugging a while ago, so I think I'm going to try get this rooted, CWM flashed, and then I can flash a ROM on top and hopefully that will clear it up.

You're right you cant then. That's not bricked, it's just faulty. Looks like the digitiser is kaputsky. Probably something as simple as a loose wire inside but in order to check you would have to open it up and that would invalidate your warranty of course. Bad luck man, that's defintely an RMA job.
Do you guys over in the US have different consumer laws to us in the UK, all this talk of RMA on a brand new product is slightly baffling.
Assuming you bought it over the counter from somewhere like Best Buy, why can you not just walk into the shop with it, put it down on the counter with your receipt and (politely) say, this is brand new, its knackered, please give me another one out of your stock room.
Even if it was mail order, return it and demand a replacement by return of post, or a refund. If they won't replace straight away get a refund, and then walk into Best Buy and get one.
Surely there is no need to be hanging around waiting for Asus to fix a product that is only a week old.
I will be picking up Transformer number three from Comet tomorrow, what they do with the faulty one is their business.
And I will continue to take them back until I get a good one.

Most brick and mortar's do not have and have not had units, so taking them back isnt an option if you want a replacement. Since most people bought online, an rma to the etailer is the only option.
Update : Fixed
well, i rooted, flashed cwm, then flashed prime 1.2 on top of stock, and now it looks like everything works? no idea what the hell happened but now it registers my fingers lol. i guess mods can lock/delete this thread?

There are very few in stock, you can't just walk into most places and pick one up. The only option is to RMA back to Asus and wait some undetermined amount of time for a replacement.

Transformer won't turn on /:

So I tried everything in all the other threads and it's still a no go for me. This is extremely disappointing, I was really loving this thing.
I'm scared to even attempt going through Asus's terrible customer service, especially with my TF being rooted and all...
any advice on what I may be able to do?
what happens when you plug it in? Does charger get hot? Try leaving plugged into powered usb overnight.
I had an issue where I left my transformer a week ago plugged into the electricity, and when I came back home - it was out of battery and refused to turn on. I tried plugging into the computer directly but that didn't help either.
Today I went to best buy and plugged it into an adapter on display, and it started working..
When I came back home, I tried my cable again and it suddenly worked!
The moral of the story is it seems the power adaptors are quite flaky. Try to disconnect and connect again..
Also see this thread with some tips on fixing the power adaptor:
http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...er-no-longer-charges-wall-wart-adapter-4.html
I highly doubt the charger is the problem in my particular case because the dock seems to charge fine. Also, my TF died on my when it still had around 80% battery life.
Another thing is that my alarm clock that I have set up on my TF still goes off every morning and the only way for me to turn it off is by repeatedly pressing the power button (this is extremely annoying).
I'm assuming that the screen may have just completely died or something of that sort.
Do you guys have any other advice, or should I just go ahead and attempt to rma it?
thanks it advance
I had this same thing happen to my TF a few weeks ago. The solution for me was to use the tool in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
I used v6.3 for my US 8.6.5.9 rom version. This basic steps I took were to install the APX driver (steps in the thread above), then run the batch file and do 4, 5, & 6. I didn't see anything on my TF screen until the above was completed and then turning it on.
Hope this helps you.

Was your transformer already rooted? It seems as if this tool is for rooting transformers, and mine is already rooted with a custom rom loaded onto it.
Can you please walk me through exactly what you did to get this process to work?
I'm pretty desperate as of right now!
Edit: So apparently my TF is still capable of connecting to my PC and I can view all of the folders on the internal memory as well as put it in APX mode, does this mean there is still hope for me?
Please guys, if anybody has some insight on how I could possibly fix this, it would mean more to me than you can imagine.

I am very interrested in this thread as I have the very same problem.
Asus proposed to RMA it but I fear that they might find some trace of the previous root as I unrooted "blindly"

yeah, that is what i'm worried about as well.
What number did you contact for the RMA?
Well apparently my only option is to RMA the device.
I went ahead and un-rooted it with the BRK toolkit, however after un-rooting it said that I have to load a stock rom and recovery image onto it. How do I go about doing this without turning it on and flashing the zip in recovery?
Do you all think ASUS will even notice it is rooted and if so what steps should I take to ensure that there is no proof of root?
Please help me a bit on this one guys.
I had the same issue with mine last week. Appeare dead but would connect to PC APX mode and could view SD card contents.
When looking at the screen with a flashlight, the text was visible. The unit was actually working but the backlight had died.
Had to get it replaced with new one from place I bought it from on their product replacement scheme. great except its a new one that can't be rooted yet.
Sitting patiently for that to be released so I can go back to playing....

Yes, my TF was rooted and running a custom ROM. When running the batch file that is in the package in the other thread I referenced, I did steps 4, 5, and 6. Then rebooted and it was fine. If you can get the APX driver installed and your computer will recognize it, then try those steps using the tool. Once I rebooted, it just loaded my same ROM as if nothing had happened.
Of course a hardware failure would cause the same thing (backlight or LCD not working, etc...) but in my case it was a software or booting issue and the above fixed it. If you try what I did and still nothing then RMA is probably your only option.
i had this problem too, in my case it was a defective power button. had to push it real hard to get the pad turned on ... rma fixed it ....
i have the same problem also and it turned out to be the power button my solution was just to keep pressing it haha and then it worked strangely enough. ive read somewhere that it it gets misalligned somehow. i guess i have 2 options either send it back or fix it myself at the moment im just living with it.
it works somedays then otherdays it takes a few pushes lol
My case seems to be none of the above.
I tried checking if it was an issue with the back light and put a flashlight up to it in a pitch black dark room but I can't see anything on the screen whats so ever, regardless of the angle I put it in.
I also don't think it is the power button because like I said, i'm able to put he tablet in APX mode and take it out of APX mode as well at will by pressing the power and volume up button.
Thirdly, I tried the root kit several times (version 7) and while it's doing it's job of rooting and un-rooting my TF, there still is no change in the functionality of the screen.
so i'm pretty much sol. I already placed in an RMA to asus, now I just have to ship it off (asus has by far the worst customer service that I have ever seen).
My final question would be is there anyway to load a stock rom and recovery image without being able to turn the tablet on? I'm able to unroot it with the rootkit, but it says that I still need to load a stock rom and whatnot.
If somebody can point me towards directions as to how I go about doing this, that would be great.
Thanks for all the help guys.

Dock dead after .18 firmware upgrade

Hi,
I have a TF700T completly stock without root and upgraded the firmware to the most recent one .18 with the dock attached and it went successfully.
After this the dock does not appear as connected on asus notifications, keyboard does not work, neither does battery get recognized on battery widgets.
When connected to the AC adapter there is no light indicating charging on the dock and also does not appear on the tablet if connected to the dock.
The AC adapter shouldn't be the problem as it charges correctly the tablet and another similar dock.
Also tried to reinstall the download firmware through MicroSD and several cold boots and data wipes, with the dock attached, but got no resolution to the problem.
Tried to exchange it on the supplier, FNAC, since it has less than 30 days but they didn't exchange as they invoke it has scratches (2 or 3 millimeters very lightly).
Now I was trying to avoid sending it to warranty as it is brand new and wouldn't like to be deprived of it.
Can anyone help?

In that case, since the tablet has less than one month, I believe the sensible option is to send it back to Asus..

You probably did not understand my suggestion; you DON'T NEED to UNLOCK or ROOT to downgrade. You CAN downgrade your device to .30
Here is the instruction:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1925230
Only take you about 20min.

I assumed you probably tried to reseat the tablet and the dock already, at this time, I believe you should give Asus tech support a call and if they can't help you they are going to give you RMA to send in for repair. Good luck.
I already called them this morning and they are going to pick it up tomorrow at my place.
Was just trying one last shot in order to avoid sending it back.
I reset the tablet with the dock attached, is there another method just to reset the dock?

[Q] ***HELP*** Transformer won't turn on.

My transformer will not turn on. I used it a couple days ago but don't remember if I fell asleep or powered down. I went to turn back on this morning but there is no response. If I plug in the charger I can see the light come on. Also if I hold the power button it will give a quick vibrate after about 10 seconds. Has anyone else had this problem?
Its rooted and unlocked. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance for your time.
I forgot to mention that there is nothing being displayed on the screen at anytime whatsoever...

Try cold booting it? Turn it off and then turn it on while holding the volume down button.
Try connecting it to your laptop, see if detects it???
Maybe its a software app thing?

Already tried both. Problem is, is that there is no way to see if the device is even powered on... The battery meter on the screen doesn't even show up when its plugged in/charging...
Wow....that sucks.
If your computer doesnt detect it, then idk what you could do.... cuz if it did, then you could try to use adb to try and restarting t.
It sucks that its unlocked or i would have said to just contact asus to get it replaced.
Other than that, its hard to say...sorry man.

You can't send to ASUS when you use unlock tool they get your S/N and save it in case something like this happens. The only way I can see around this would be if you bought it at a Best Buy. They maintain 1 year manufacturer warranties if you bought from them so you could feasibly take to geek squad/Customer service and say it just stopped working. They wouldn't have record that you unlocked the tab. You would most likely need the receipt or some confirmation you bought it there though. Good luck.
Sorry friend, seems like you are in real trouble. I had a very similar problem, my only solution was to exchange it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203565
As you have unlocked yours, the warranty is no longer valid, and although Asus will fix it, you will have to pay to get it done. Since I'm on my second TF, and it even has had a problem that nearly bricked it, I am simply afraid to unlock it while still within the warranty period.
Might get lucky and see something with it connected to the HDMI port.

They did with my TF201 and this guys TF700 just a month ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240970
They took back my TF201 in August last year. I was told by BB it was done under the manufacturers warranty. It really does depend on who you talk to and how you approach them with the problem. Several people had to try different BB stores until they found that one person working there that either knew HOW to do it or was willing to take it back.
I had the same problem. Tried all the ideas mentioned above. I then put it on the charger for a day and afterwards it just booted like nothing had happened.

TF201 is a different tab and basically BB and asus came to an agreement to take them back. The guy in your link got lucky. Probably only got a trade because of the extreme nature of the defect. Fact is you cannot just go into BB and get a new tablet under mfg warranty.

Exactly.
Now for the good news. My tablet came back to life last night after 3 weeks of trying. It was totally dead and wouldn't even vibrate anymore. plugged it in and it actually tried to boot right away but then turned off. Let it charge for a few and tried again and it booted no problem. Battery % is now showing accurately and it has now been running fine for 12 hours.
My problem is I went out and got an HP envy x2 (win8) tab on saturday. Now to decide which to keep... I love the envy but the new quad cores are coming out this fall which should really make it a versatile little laptop. Just don't know if I can live with android now that I have a taste of full win 8.

Any updates? My TF700 stopped turning on as well. Same recovery efforts, now waiting on the battery to drain. I unlocked/rooted for cleanrom (faster/better). Worked fantastic till last thursday and it refused to turn on in my college class. This could signal my exit from Android even though I have a lot of money invested in apps.

I recieved my tablet back from asus. Appears they swapped motherboards and i have a stock tablet again. No charges to me. Took about two weeks. Of course i will try and root/unlock again.

Good to hear. Aside from the snappier response of cleanrom my biggest issue with the asus firmware was the waste of screen space on the home screen. It had like a 1" border all the way around that you can't put an icon in and that annoyed me the most of all. Been waiting the battery to go completely dead before I send it in just hoping that fixes it.

[Q] Returning phone for warranty, how to unroot with no working screen?

My LG G2 stopped working last week. The screen totally went dead out of nowhere, and I went to the store and ordered a replacement. I have the new phone so everything is good, but how do I go about returning the old one? I rooted it like 2 weeks ago, how can I unroot without a working screen? The phone won't even connect as a usb device to my computer anymore (and I can't change the settings cause of the screen..).
Will verizon know it is rooted even if the screen doesn't work? I don't want to get shafted with a $500 charge just for rooting. I'm sure this has to have happened to people before so if anyone has any info I'd appreciate it.

Throw it in download mode and get the KDZ or whatever it's called for your device. it'll install a completely stock ROM on your device.
the last time i had to return a phone for non-functionality after i'd gained administrator access, they didn't even look at the phone before they gave me a replacement. that's what my money's on here, too, especially with a broken screen and no usb function. they probably won't even attempt to repair it, it's just not worth it. they'll try to recover the precious metals from it and be done.
no promises of course, but that's my guess.
