Cell Standby Draining Battery - myTouch 4G General

My phone's battery will decrease down by 30 percent in a matter of an hour from it just being in my pocket, when I check what is using the battery it is cell standby. I have disabled all updating widgets and have turned off auto syncing yet this still happens. Is there any way to fix this?

+1...also the radio that you are using

I am using MIUI, I was using Cynagon but the same issue was occuring with that ROM so I tried switching but it did not resolve the issue. Where would I go to check the radio?

I used this app of the market called battery defender it helps a lot !! An free

Does it protect against the cell standby draining problem? Because that is the only issue.

I thinks so it disconnect all networks activity when idling or standby it helps me I use it and during an eight hour school day I only lost five percent battery while my phone was just sitting in my pocket u can also use setcpu to underclock/volt your phone when the screen is off to save battery hope this help if so slide down to the thanx Button

You're not the only one. Over the past few days something has defiantly changed. Cell standby has been extremely high. It's currently sitting at 57%, followed by Phone idle at 24%, WiFi at 9%, and then Android System and Display at only 2%.
ROM: Newest MIUIAndroid (NOT TDJ's)
Radio: Stock

I have tried everything to fix this issue but nothing seems to work. Maybe its the radio?

watch out there have been more than a few instances were t-mobile network has been messing up and will trash your battery.

FYI, Cell Standby is usually on the top of the list for MIUI and AOSP builds for consuming the battery. its perfectly normal. but 30% in an hour?? could be your radio, OC too high, rogue apps, etc... radio thread is in my sig

Its more than likely an app unless you have it overclocked really high.
If you recently installed a new app try uninstalling it and seeing if you get better battery life.

Im pretty sure its not a new app because I had this same issue with Cynagon MOD and I did a fresh install of MIUI.

Try the battery defender app i suggest this may help or u can also try to recalibrate your battery using the calibration app on the market

well since its not an app we can cross that out. what are your OC settings with setcpu? or are you even overclocked? and which radio are you on? (forgot how to check on MIUI, but for sense its Menu>Settings>About phone>Software information>More>Baseband version) try looking under the System tab for "about phone" or "phone information"

Could be an old app then. Since its on two different roms I am almost certain its an app. Assuming your not overclocked. None of our radios drain the battery so it's Def not that.

Setcpu is set for "smart-ass" and at 902 max, 122 min. I baseband version is "12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M"

^ Basically the same as mine, just I'm using MIUIAndroid instead of MIUI.US. Cell standby is currently using 39% of my battery and the change in battery performance has been very noticeable. Should I maybe try one of the new radios?

I just flashed the newest radio listed here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059347 I'm hoping that it will improve battery life.

Any luck with the new radio?

Battery usage/duration screen shots

I'm curious to see actual screen shots of the battery life screen of different members & which rom, kernal, radio, ril combo being used to get that battery life. I'm using a virtuous unity/honeysense 3d ROM with the recommended honeysense radio with corresponding ril & the rmx 4.3.4 kernal.

everyone uses their phones differently so it's hard to tell which ROM actually gives the best battery life just by judging screenshots.
However I think it's strange that the about battery screen on CM7 tells me that the display only used 2%.

Oh. Well that's kind of a tick against CM7...having that functionality is kind of one of the basics. I assume they are working on it .

um, No, I play with it all day. I read books and listen to Surius XM mainly. Notice the bluetooth usage..That from my Stereo head phones.... It never reports my aldiko book reader time. At all. Plus I sync Facebook and gmail and weather every hour.

What governor do you use (on battery)? I've been using Gingerbeast (overclocked to 1.2 GHz) all this time without PUV. Right now, I get 12-16 hours with 2.5 hours of display time. I'm going to flash PUV and if I see a slight, noticeable bump, I'll be pleased.

A calculator says that 5% of that 19 hours is about 1 hour. All I'm saying is I doubt you do much actually on the phone. Screen time is what kills everyones battery (for the most part, it's usually the largest % of battery drain).
So all I'm saying is 1 hour of screen time does not justify reading books and playing with the phone "all day."
Holy christ talk about defensive... almost insecure...
Also, on the subject of governers, can we include governer settings in details with the screen shots?
I'm currently using on demand... But my settings won't stick in SetCPU (the advanced settings). Every time I close and open SetCPU those settings are back to default..

Which kernel am I running?

Hey all, quick question hopefully you all can help me out with. I am currently having terrible battery issues ever since I flashed my phone initially. Terrible as in 6 hours stand-by my phone would be dead.
Anyhow, I am just trying to figure out who's (which) kernel I am running. The kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622 . I have done searches but biggest problem is, threads usually do not post the version number for me to check what I am running.
I am on Infused 2.1.0 (thx GTG!), but battery life has been garbage on all ROMs so I am certain that is not the issue. Can anyone let me know, me love you long time.

unless you have some other things running thats eating it up. when you check your battery stats whats eating the most power. Display? Android Proccess?

Problem is I bought 2 extra batteries and get exact same life. When I initially bought the phone I would get a days use surprisingly. After that, I have had nothing but god awful drain. I have had almost a dozen android phones and have never encountered such terrible battery life.
I do not have fetch data enabled/gps/widget updates or anything that would normally keep the processor/data churning while in my pocket. Battery use is usually around 40-80% on display, all other categories being minimal (which seems correct).
I'm banging my head on this one, I appreciate you guys replying to my thread

1% per 3 hours standby is FREAKING AWESOME..!!!!
Maybe u have some stray app in the background that's using CPU/whatever it is that's eating up ur battery.
Some subtle things u cud try since u said display is taking up 40-80% of battery:
1. Turning off screen auto rotation, turning it on when needed
2. Turning off auto brightness, turning it on to auto when needed
Use SetCPU like people above pointed out and this would let u see what processor states ur phone is spending most time in.
It sounds like for some people, Infusion 1.1 really flakes out. No clue why. I don't overclock so I don't run it.
It's either Infusion 1.1 flaked out, or if you continue having problems with other kernels, you have a rogue app.
Kernels rarely make any significant difference in battery life unless they're broken.

Running Infusion-GB 1.1 and Infused 2.1.0: I get 1% drain every 3 hours on standby with radio on (reasonable H+ reception) and 1% every 6 hours on flight mode.
It's most likely a defect in your phone or a configuration issue. You really have to be using your phone for at least 4 or 5 hours (screen-on time) over those 6 hours to cut through battery that fast.

when you go to settings > applications > running services - is there anything there that looks like it shouldn't be there?
i know that there is a process that starts with an "o" that is tied into media hub's protected content (DRM) - eats a ton of battery, and isn't really necessary.
it's also possible that you have the SNS service going, but constantly in a restarting state. this seemed to eat a lot of battery also.
otherwise, i'd do what others have suggested and monitor with CPU spy, and i'd also suggest an app called Better Battery Stats (not available in the market - find it here on XDA by a developer named chamonix). this will let you know if you have any wakelocks that are preventing your phone from reaching deep sleep when it is idle.
definitely sounds like you could have a wakelock or 2 interfering with your phone trying to get into those lower frequencies.
wipe battery stats?

Packets in/out isn't what you want unless you also have unusual data usage too. It's wakelock stats you want - look at the BetterBatteryStats app. It used to be only on XDA but apparently it's on the market now.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Wiping battery stats does NOTHING on our phone. Don't go blindly telling people to do something on our devices just because it worked on another device. The fuel gauge chip on GalaxyS series phones works in a very different way than HTC phones. (Exception: I think the GSII has a more traditional fuel gauge.)

[Q] fastest sense rom with best battery?

ive been on AndroRevHD and im not too happy with battery performance, i have juicedefender pro, turn wifi and mobile data off while im in school, underclock it while in school and the battery reaches 30 percent by 12 and i unplug from a full charge at 6 20ish...
also whenever i power on the phone htc sense stops and has to restart everytime
no need to be a dickhead and say theres a website called google... i cant google someones opinion
so anyway from experience which sense rom is the fastest, stablest, and longest lasting battery youve used... besides elgancia and coredroid cause i dont like there theming...
oh and im about to try insertcoin now
I would suggest you try ENERGY ROM, it is still Gingerbread but it is stable and fast my battery lasts the whole day now it is a 1900 battery though, but with stock ROM I only had 25-30% left by 11:30
strange, I have the Sensation on ARHD 6.2.1 and during school I also turn off my mobile network/wifi.. but I don't under-clock, i just set the screen-off governor as conservative.. when I reach school, it's still at 100% battery after listening to some music on the train, when I leave school it's around 92%
stock kernel at 1.5 ghz if that helps
PS. the HTC Sense crash means you have apps on your SD card, go to app settings and un-tick all the apps so that they get moved to phone memory. I have tried this myself and it worked

[Q] Battery life - what mA value is normal?

Hello everyone,
I have looked around the forum and it seems like most of you guys with Sensation + 3.12 or 3.24 or 3.30 firmware and ICS Roms have good or great battery lives.
This is not the case for me unforunately with Sensation XE. battery drain is so crazy that if i go to sleep with 100% charged - the battery is dead when i wake up (in a metter of 8-10 hours) while the phone is not used at all, wi-fi and mobile network off.
I have tried
- full-wipe
- reflash
- calibration
- discharging to 0% and recahrging - couple cysles
- waiting 4-5 days until the ROM settles down
- removing microSD
- canging batteried (i have anker and stock htc both in good health)
- i am not overclocking
but still the battery drain is very bad.
I am now using Battery Monitoring widget but i cannot find what app or process is causing the problem.
Here are my questions
1) What is the normal mA value (displayed on battery monitor widget)?
what are your lowest and highest values? for me lowest is about 65mA and highest over 700mA. Is it to much? Those of you guys with nice battery drain - could you please install Battery Monitor Widget and let me know you values?
2) How can I find the app (if its an app) that takes the juice? I tried to see stats in battery monitor widget - but all I can see is some k.workers
I even tried to full-wipe and not to install any apps. Currently i have GoLauncher, GoSMS and Battery Monitor Widget, PlayerPro and Android Pro Widgets.
3 ) here is my battery history. Does it look normal?

Any advise and help will be much appreciated.
Thanks
It seems high but not outrageous. You gave about 70-100mAh when not in use which is about what I had with factory rom. I assume all the usual things are done like GPS off, brightness low, wifi on etc.
Do you have poor signal, and are you using mobile data a lot? That increases battery usage.
To assess more fully the processes running I use system tuner pro. This allows you to see user, system & kernel processes and sort by memory, CPU time etc.
I currently see around 30-60mAh when idling.

Hello,
thanks for reply.
My Signal is good (full-bars) Mobile Data is off, WIFI, GPS are off as well
and brightness low... but actually the screen is off when i am sleeping...
I understand smartphones use power, especially on mobile-data and WiFi, but I hate that feeling when I wake up and see my phone's battery dead....
never got as low as 30mAh even when completely not in use with everything off.
I will try to use System Tuner Pro - maybe will find out somethinh.
OK post back results perhaps I can help more.
I'm looking at STP now, using task manager I can see my top processes in terms of CPU time are:
STP
android system
Xda premium
Android keyboard
/system/bin/surfaceflinger
Gmail
System UI
do nothing untoward, I would expect those to be running given my usage right now.
Use STP to record a period when you sleep, you can then do this process check to see what's running.

My battery is pretty much the same and I'm on a fresh ics install. This device seems to just suck a lot of battery. The screen especially.

Hmmm my sensation XE used to have at least 1.5 times as much power (when used) and 2 to 3 times as much power when not used befor upgrading to 3.12, 3.24 and 3.30.
I know what you will tell - go back to Gingerbread.
I am actually considering this. but many people say with ICS their battery is better then ever before.
Is it ICS who sucks the power then?
Thanks
From your stats you are losing 1% in 5 minutes in standby, my sensation (with virtuous inquisition ROM) uses less than 1% per hour - that's with a good 4G connection in standby. My 1900mAh battery lasts over 24hrs with up to 6hrs screen on during that time.
To eliminate hardware flash a fresh ROM and firmware, boot a couple of times (don't install any apps) then remove the SD card and put the phone in airplane mode and leave it overnight on standby. If you're losing more than 1% per hour, then your phone may be faulty. If not then you'll need to try things one by one, turn airplane mode off, insert SD, then apps until you find the problem.
Looking at the instant mAh figures won't help you a lot, the battery driver for the sensation is useless and BMW has to estimate the figure.
Thanks for advice.
Could you please let me know the firware you are using?
3.12, 3.24 or 3.30 ?

3.12. I had the 3.24 ready to load when VI 3.5 was released but everything worked fine on 3.12 so I left well alone.
Ok here is what happened
1) i falshed new 3.30 RUU and ROM with fullwipe etc
2) booted the rom put it to settle fo 30 mins
3) rebooted 3 times
4) then charged to 100%, and switched airplane mode ON
with Airplane Mode on - I have lost 25% of battery during 3 hours without touching the phone. That makes 12 hours without using the phone at all.
I am starting wondering if it is not the firware that is causing the problems... Maybe i should go back to 3.12 or even earlier.
Anyone can please point me to some firmware earlier to 3.12?
I do not think it is a faulty phone, because I have 2 phones and both have same problem. and both started having this problem after upgrading to ICS...
let me know you thoughts and please a link to an earlier firmware (earlier than 3.12)
battery drain
i would say you have normal operation .
mine is between 50-100 MA and yet when not using it during night in the morning i am still at 100%......
when keeping it for a whole day not using it i am droping from 100% to 87% for about 24 hours idle use ....
so i would say check your battery when it starts or is it from the day you got your device .....
Thanks for reply, oferyama
Normal operation ??
You lose 23% in 24 hours while
me - I lose 1% every 5 minutes = teh phone is dead after 10 hours of idling.....
Probalby mAh reported vaules is incorrect, and the important thing is how many % you lose per hour
Did you flash a custom kernel at all?
What rom is this problem occurring with?
Sent from my Pyramid-T
I have tried many ICS ROMS - Elegancia ICS, AnroidMe ICS, LeeDroid ICS = same problem. i also tried 3.12, 3.24 and 3.30 firmwares
but I cannot remember if the problem started when i upgraded to 3.12 or 3.24.....
From today I have 3.30 jsut for testing... and if everything fails - planning to go back to Gingerbread to see if it helps...
Hi umka, I had same problem as you. Try this to figure out what's eating your battery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
I'm using VI 3.5.1 beta and battery drain varies from 30 to 82mA while not touching a phone at all on stock XE battery. While i'm typing this, I have 78% battery, phone is unplugged for 10h and 6 minutes. I'm using SebastianFM kernel 1.11 (this one: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64017594/HTC Sensation/Overclocked_kernel_v1.11_1512_MHz_by_SebastianFM.zip) on my Sensation XE. Radio is stock for FW 3.30. Adequate RIL of course. Lots of apps installed, many of them are disabled from autostarting. I'm using Shnizlon's theme (just aosp bar).
Desktop: minimalistic text with weather info, updating every 3 hours.
Hope this brief info will help you to figure something out.
Good luck!
Thanks for reply - trying this right now....
Amon87, could you please let me know what was eating batery in your case?? I have just flashed a new ROM and did not isntall any applications at all... Where shoud I look at?
I was suspecting the radio, but i tried different ones... and i tried airplane mode - but even in airplane mode when radio shoud not make any difference the battery drain is terrible..
i will post you on the results

So no kernels flashed desperately to rom?
Did you have any results from STP finding the battery killer? Do you restore app/data after each flash e.g. with TiBu?
Sent from my Pyramid-T
Sorry to say, but i just don't remember the name of that app. For sure, main problem for me was radio and unmatching RIL.
I recommend you to try different kernel and change governor. I'm using system tuner pro to change this. When screen on: ondemand 192-1.51. Screen off: interactive 192-648MHz. But try powersave.
Another clue. Maybe somehow second core is constantly turned on?
What recovery are you using to flash roms, kernels etc? For me it's newest 4ext recovery test build.

1) In most case I used default kernels provided with the ROM (somtimes flashed custom ones)
2) I am not good yet at looking at STP and BMW stats - so amybe I am missing something, but so far I did not find the battery killer. How do you find the battery killer? a process using more than 10%-20% CPU or smth like that?
3) I used to restore the apps using Titanium Backup, but then, to find out the problem, i just flashed a fresh ROM and did not install any apps at all..
and still losing at least 10% per hour with DATA off, Mobile Network OFF, GPS and WIFI off and Airplan Mode ON.

- Well right now I do not have any apps installed yet, excpet those that come default with 3.30. So its definetely not an application.
- !!! Myabe it is indeed unmatching RIL adn RADIO - coudl you please give me more info on that? How do I find out what is matching. I am in Japan and i bought my phone in HongKong (so it shoould be asia) and default ROM was doing just fine... Could you please point me to correct RIL and Radio - or advice where to look?
- From what i have seen in STP yesturday - second core is off. not sure about now - cause i do not have STP installed after flashing stok 3.30
- I am using ext4 recovery latest.

[Q] Battery from 82% to 4% overnight

My phone drains my battery overnight, and I dont know why. I have Wifi and mobile network enabled, but the phone screen is switched off. Every night that I forget to charge the phone, it runs from almost full to almost empty. Here is a screenshot from BetterBattery. Any ideas?
Remarks:
* I have tried 3 different batteries
* My phone is rooted
* I am running Android Revolution HD 6.8.0 XE
I guess you'd need to find out what's draining the battery on a trial and error basis:
-> Turn off wi-fi and bluetooth at night and see if that makes any difference
-> Turn off the Auto sync another day and see if that's draining a lot
-> Also the Battery menu in Settings should give an idea of what's eating up your battery

You clearly have a nasty wakelock.
BBS shoudl tell you exactly what it is. Look at the "Kernel wakelocks" and "Partial wakelocks" section from the drop down menu at the top of the BBS screen.
It should tell you exactly what's keeping the phone awake. Once you have that info report it back here if you need help fixing it. Though it may just be as simple as a rouge app that's running constantly that you can just uninstall.

Some ROMs just are not battery efficient. I have tried numerous ROMs and most of them do not give good battery life.
I would recommend you to install DarkSense which has excellent battery life.
Till now my phone has been on for 14 hours and it is has gone to 83%.
ARHD 6.8.0 has excellent battery life. Try reinstalling kernel and set governor to conservative and you'll have best battery life.

Thanks for the suggestion Alen. Is there a tutorial I could follow? Could you send me a link?

nandroid backup first just in case
Thanks Alen, I know this thread, it's where I downloaded the ROM. However it is more that 1000+ pages long. Do you remember which specific post discusses your suggestion to "Try reinstalling kernel and set governor to conservative"?
Thanks again

In this thread search for latest kernel v010b7 by faux123 it comes with aroma installer and flash it from recovery. Then download System Tuner pro from google play and set CPU options as I advised you.

I think that problem is related to superSU binary update regarding android mksh superuser permision that causes wakelock no mather you allow or deny SU perminssion.

i just want to ask gurus out there is it normal for google service n android system to use a a lot of batteries?
im using JB miui from stickman, hboot 1.27, fw 3.33, s-off
i think its causing a lot of wakelocks.

Here is a link for kernel tuner http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719934 U can use it to change the governor. Just open it after installing and choose CPU tweaks. On the bottom u will find the option to change ur governor.
