Is new OTA Sense 3.0 ROM rootable? - HTC Desire S

I'm currently S-ON and have non rooted stock ROM. I wonder if my phone would be rootable if I apply the official OTA update? Since it installs new HBOOT, would revolutionary be able to S-OFF it?

Check the revolutionary.io website, it pre determines before you download whether if your current setup is rootable.

I don't know if you can S-OFF and root after the update, but I DO KNOW, that you better don't do it before the update.
I have S-OFFed my phone using revolutionary and rooted using this su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip through the clockworkmod. But after latest OTA update I wasn't able to boot anymore and it pretty messed up my phone. After 4 hours I was able to repair my totally useless phone hopefully.

[Q] Re-Rooting previously rooted under 2.1 US Cellular Desire, S-OFF still set?

Can't find a confirmed answer for this. I previously rooted my US Cellular Desire under 2.1 using Unrevoked, S-OFF was set. I then flashed to 2.2 stock ROM and got the 1.06 hboot which of course can't currently be rooted. Although I have read that people that rooted prior to updating to the 1.06 hboot were still able to re-root. The clarification I am seeking is, once S-OFF has been set, is it still set after the upgrade? Or does the 2.2 rom flash revert this back to S-ON? If people are able to re-root, I would assume that means the rom flash leaves it to S-OFF and therefore Unrevoked should be able to re-root the phone. Is that assumption correct

New firmware RUU...

hi guys i've a question for you: my Desire S is s-off, root but still with stock rom (and 4Ext recovery)...i know that i cannot do the OTA update so i have to choose 2 ways:
1) downgrade to s-on with hboot 0.98 and 1.28 RUU stock rom, then do the ota updates
2) flashing the rom 2.10 with RUU without downgrade
here is my doubt: if i flash now the RUU 2.10, the update will succeed but the device will turn back to s-on without root or the device will result blocked as doing the OTA update?
and when it will be available RUU 2.10 prerooted? i could use the RUU with the device S-off, maintaining root?
Why apply the update?
Stay well clear of it, as it will just limit your devices future functionality and remove future options that are currently open to you, if you want the update then supply a custom that contains it.
Never apply ota updates once rooted

[Q] After official OTA update.. No unlocked bootloader etc. ?

Will I get the official OTA update if I have unlocked the bootloader via HTCdev method? Actually, I unlocked the bootloader via HTCdev on my sensation which is still in Android 2.3.4. (At that point I didn't know that doing that would not allow supercid and all that stuff.)
If I will get the update.. I just wanted to know after the official OTA update from HTC, will it be a like a new phone? (yeah, i know it will be factory reset.. but i wanted to know if my bootloader, rooting and etc. Will that remain?)
I want the all the rooting and unlocked bootloader not to stay so that i can start afresh with Revolutionary and flash one of the Sense 4 ROMs.. Please help!!
Thank you!

Yes you will receive OTA and bootloader will remain **unlocked**. All you need to receive OTA is stock rom, stock recovery and original cid (S-OFF or S-ON doesn't matter).
By the way if you are still on android 2.3.4 most probably your Hboot is 1.18 that means you can S-Off using Revolutionary and then supercid, root etc.. (you can revert easily to original cid and stock recovery anytime).
If you upgrade to ICS 4.0 with Hboot 1.27 you won't be able to S-OFF and supercid unless someone will find a solution. Actually Hboot 1.27 is not supported by Revolutionary.
Ota to ICS 4.0 will not factory reset your phone. Your data and apps will be untouched.
Honestly I don't understand if you are rooted or not. Unlocking bootloader by HtcDev doesn't mean you are rooted. Could you please clarify?
Hope it helps.

Difference between RUU & OTA

Hi Friends,
Have a few questions pls, Thanks in advance.
1 What is the difference between official OTA update & RUU update?
2 Is it required to have a rooted phone to make RUU?
3 In case a phone is rooted already, will it be able to be updated by official RUU?
4 Are there any diff betwee n OTA & RUU in terms of settings, regional configuration, stability.. .etc?

1. OTA is incremental and doesn't erase anything. RUU is complete and erases everything.
2. No.
3. Yes.
4. Completely different things, since OTA is incremental and upgrades your existing ROM. Can't compare apples to oranges.
Thanks, but what is the major disadvantage of RUU, I understand it will erase all my data & will have to restore data & applications, is there anything else that make it a second choice?

Why is it second choice? It's not about choice, it's about picking the right tool for the job. When you want to get OS upgrade, OTA is better - because you get the upgrade without extra pain (without starting everything from scratch). When you suspect your phone is misbehaving, or for some other reason want to restore your phone to the stock state - RUU is the way to go. They're not "better" than each other, they're different, for different occasions.
And im new to this stuff and if you can say or give the link to the thread where i can find what ota is it would be perfect, i searched xda but all i found was roms with ota

OTA is "Over-The-Air", so unless it arrives to your phone automatically, as it's supposed to - I believe people aren't keeping OTAs anymore. Once, when Nexus One was still considered a new phone, they did - but not anymore, for a long time now. In the forum you'll only be able to find RUUs, I believe.
In case a phone is rooted already, will it be able to be updated by official OTA?
It seems that OTA does not work for me anymore after I S-OFF'd and rooted.
I know also flashed a new radio. Does that affect the possibility of OTA in any way?
Cheers.
OTA doesn't care about rooting or S-OFFing. If there is OTA standing - it'll be delivered to the phone. Installing it might be problematic (can't be installed by custom recovery without disabling signature check), but the delivery WILL happen. S-OFF doesn't affect OTA in any way. If you don't get OTA - that's because there is no OTA, the servers are stopped.
I see. Signature check be the problem. Any solution for that?
This is only relevant if you have stock rooted ROM and custom recovery.
In that case, you need to locate the ZIP file downloaded by system update, and install it manually in recovery, skipping signature detection.

5. I've just received this system update OTA - 1.47.61.1 or later. If I install it, will I loose my S-OFF and root?
- Yes, you will lose both S-OFF and root once you update because it will update the hboot to 0.98.0002. However, you can try following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16110608&postcount=5 to update the OTA but not the hboot. Check this one out also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190992 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194488 to S-OFF and root if you have updated the OTA.

I decided that it is probably not a good idea to go down to OTA route.
Hi,
I had the stock rom RUU_Saga_S_HTC_ARA_2.14.415.3_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U and I wanted to install the European RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.9_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U. But in the install process there was an 155 error. I tried some times but the same result. I read here a lot and finally I unlocked the phone HTCDEV as my hboot is 2.00.0002 and flash 4EXT_Recovery_v2.2.7_RC5 and ICE_DS_4.4 rom.
I experience some problem with this rom, so is it possible to install the european ruu of GB?
Yes, if you use goldcard or if you're SuperCID (which can only happen on this phone if you unlock it with XTC-Clip).
If you didn't understand something from the above - Google it.

I know the words goldcard and supercid. I saw few threads name them . Thanks for the reply I will try the goldcard.
So i made my sd card Goldcard. what's next, in order to install stock european ruu GB? some guidance maybe?
Relock your bootloader and immediately install (without exiting FASTBOOT USB mode).

I relocked the phone and when i try to install the european ruu it gives me the error 140, and stuck in bootloader. Then I install the ARA ruu and all gone well the phone runs well.
The problem though exists. I want the european ruu and not the ara ruu. Any ideas?

OTA goodies

What OTA goodies am I missing?
1.) I see h8rift posted that there is a touchscreen firmware update.
2.) a new radio
3.) new hboot or something?
I got the radio flashed. But should I want to do the touchscreen firmware? What about the hboot? I haven't had a random reboot in a long time.
1) There is a touchscreen firmware downgrade. You have to do this if you took the OTA and want to use AOSP roms.
2) Yes
3) Yes, but it write-protects /system
You should s-off before worrying about any of this, if you're not already.
1.) if you took the OTA, And you now need to downgrade your firmware, does that not imply you upgraded your firmware with the OTA? which is what I would be after. An upgrade to the touchscreen firmware that comes from the OTA.
2.)Ok if I flashed the radio then I'm obviously soff.
3.) does the new hboot have anything other than write protection?
Is there anything else that comes with the ota that would be a goodie?
Honestly, I'm not sure all that's in the ota. But I'm running more smoothly and more stable than I ever did before. Note that I ruu'd to 2.20 then flashed the entire ota.
If you're s-off, you don't need to worry about the wp.
