Hi guys, I am looking for a cheap android tablet, nothing too complex, and noticed amazon are releasing the Kindle fire in a month.
I have not been game enough to buy a no name android tablet (of which there are plenty online < $200.. but have been stung with dodgey generic crap in the past...
Does anyone have any hot tips for a sub $200 tablet that is decent quality?
Is the amazon Kindle Fire an open android os, or is it locked down.. ie can I install any app I like?
The Amazon Fire, has a ton of features for the price, with a dual-core and access to amazons special stuff. The only thing is, is that it does not have the Android Market, so if u want to download a lot of apps, you must get them of amazon app store or get the .apks of the web. If I helped please thank me.

My son follows my addiction to android and I'd like to buy him an inexpensive android tablet. Price range $100-$200. Basics necc... such as SD, wifi, rootable with some kind of following would be nice. Internet browsing, games, light apps... I know u get what you pay for but he's also eight(albeit quite savvy)and would like him to cut his teeth on something more disposable (although decent wouldn't hurt). Any ideas, links, etc appriciated. Thanks.

So yes; I have two 2 year olds and they've begun learning to navigate my wife and my android phones. (My daughter can get to Netflix and start watching Cailou on her own! Daddy is so proud!!)
Well, I don't like the fact that she's watching Netflix on such a small screen and I'm hoping to find an inexpensive tablet that has the ability to use Netflix.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Amazon Fire is cheap($200). Really nice for the price with dual-core. You will need to download netflix off the internet, since it has the amazon app store instead of android market. Hope this helps and thank me if it did! Hope u find one ur twins enjoy!

hey all, im looking to buy a tablet for my kids (ages 9 & 11) and want your suggestions. i want to keep it under $150 and have been looking at a couple that have caught my eye, but want to know if anyone of you have experience with them. they wanted the nintendo DS originally, but since i have a tablet and they fell in love with it, i figure id go the tablet route for them too. also, at this price i'd be buying one for each of them.
here they are:

Nook color, you can used ones on eBay that look brandnew for $110 or buy a new one for around $120-$130. The Nook color has a lot of support here, with cm7 stable and ics nightly. The Nook color is unbrickable, so for kids if they are getting into android modding then this would be great

the nook color does look good and i see there are manufacturer refurbished ones for sale too. that might be the route to go....thanks.
No problem good luck

Just my opinion.
I would buy a Galaxy Tab or iPad. I know it's for kids but this way you can also enjoy it. I'm not a big fan of cheap devices, because they mostly are allot worse.
goood tablet
I think ipad could be the most benefit

i have an asus transformer already for myself (will likely go with one of the newer models from asus later in the year, can u say black friday). im trying to actually get them from using mine, lol. i would go with something more expensive, but maybe later down the line depending on how they do with the lesser expensive one. i have 2 other younger kids that these could be passed down to if i decide to upgrade the older kids in a year or so.
Kindle
No one suggested a Kindle Fire, I think they are good and you can get a "refurbished" one too, I just got an email from Amazon having them on sale for $120...

I would seriously go for a kindle as well if i could find them refurbished at that price, but i can't find them and don't see that email (I'm an Amazon Prime customer too). can you provide a link?
I would reccomend the kindle fire over nookcolor but I didn't no that they were that inexpensive the kindle fire is better then nookcolor

awesome helpers! not one person commented on the five devices the OP was asking about! lol
I've gotta say, be wary buying off-branded tabs.
And with that, I'm going to recommend the Kindle Fire as well. Root in and install a CM rom and it will be just as good as a higher end tablet

should I get a kindle fire? or save my money?
Depends
What do you want to do with it? I have one and like it, but then again I have a lot of content from Amazon. Is it an iPad? Never. Is it an Android tablet...not really, it can be rooted but the lack of storage hurts it, but for $200 it is perfect.
i want to have one too...
you should get one. it's awesome e-reader!
fire sucks
I would hold out for a real tablet. I've used a friends fire and even though its technically android you don't have access to standard apps (like gmaps) or the play store unless you root. Plus the lack of storage makes it useless for someone like me. With a real tablet you would have full size usb ports for stick drives and stuff, or to usb tether to your smartphone. Tablets will have a camera for video chatting too. If you just want an ereader you can get a normal kindle or nook for under a hundred bucks, and you can still read in sunlight.

I am selling my iPad that I regret buying. I want something else. I'm between the kindle fire HD 8.9 and the galaxy tab 2 10.1 are there good reasons to get this over the kindle? I see the specs difference. But I'm still undecided. And help would be appreciated.

Galaxy tab; more dev support.
Also would add the ability to use usb memory sticks and some usb devices once you buy the optional adapter. Always handy when you're on the road and without wifi access.
What do you plan on doing with the tablet? From what I've seen of the Kindle Fire lineup, it is a completely different user experience from other tablets. It's all centered around Amazon, and it is much harder to get anything not in the Amazon App Store onto it. It also isn't going to be as good of a hacking platform since the latest version is locked down more.
With the Galaxy Tab 2, you'll get a relatively familiar Android experience that you can access the Play Store, Amazon App store, and pretty much anything else. It is also a more open hacking platform, and easier to get a custom ROM onto. Some of the hardware may not be the greatest, but I haven't found anything in my usage the tablet couldn't handle, especially after putting AOSP/CM on it.
I ordered a factory refurbished gtab for 290.
