I'm most likely getting a phone today as well and I'll be going with the Gs2 because it has root and a few devs already working or getting ready to root. Not to mention the lack of the signal issues of the Amaze and the 4.5in screen.
So the amaze has had signal problemm? And thank for responding... ive read the topics about the amaze and sgs2 also youtuve videos but just cant decide lol
I've been going back and forth between the Amaze and Samsung for over a week now, reading reviews, looking at Youtube clips and playing with both at several stores. Initially I really liked the Galaxy. Then I played with an Amaze and really started to like that. Then I found more and more reviews of how awful the battery life is with the Amaze and people having overheating issues and screen bleed with the capacitive buttons.
The only two real gripes I've had with the Galaxy so far would be the blue/gray tint that I've seen on every handset I've tried so far with respect to white backgrounds/websites. It may not be readily apparent at first but after a few minutes I noticed something isn't quite right with the color temperature/balance. When compared to my current phone and the Amaze, whites simply just do not look white at all. Maybe others don't have this problem but the 4 or 5 handsets I've played with all did. The other grip is the resolution...I still can't understand why they'd put a WVGA resolution on a screen so big. Everything is just ridiculously huge. On the plus side with that though, I found a font replacement app in the market that's free and I downloaded it and installed a smaller system font and that seemed to help a little. Of course icons and such are still huge but at least text isn't as gigantic.
Finally I was waiting to see what the new Nexus Galaxy was going to be all about. I have to say I was slightly underwhelmed by it. The resolution and screen look awesome but other facets just don't scream out "buy me". Looks like it will be on sale for $300 at some point for T-Mo, but when that is, who knows. I can get the SGS2 for $200 so the extra $100 does play a bit of a factor too.
Good luck with your decision. Good luck with mine too, although I am around 80% or more sure I'll be giving the Galaxy a whirl...

Check out the post in the Amaze section about issues and then check out our issues and make your decision from there. The Amaze has a few hardware issues. We have a few software issues. Remember software can be fixed, hardware can not.

haha sounds good thanks guys it looks like im getting the SGS2 unless something pops up and changes my mind... but its a good point hardware cant be fixed (unless with a hammer lol ) but software can... and i dont think i want to hit the amaze with a hammer to fix the hardware problem
is there a wway to make your icons smaller on the SGS2? also on the vibrant did people get sense to work? i like how sense ran and looked and i hope they have it where we can get it on the SGS2

I don't remember Sense ever being ported to any Samsung device other than the Nexus S and it didn't run that well mainly because of the hardware difference. Most HTC phones are equipped with Snapdragon and the Nexus S and Vibrant had the hummingbird processor. I think we might actually see a decent running version of Sense since we share the same processor and gpu as the Amaze and other HTC devices. Things such as image resizing and reprogramming the capacitive buttons might be the only major obstacle devs might face. I could be wrong.

I am sure they are both very nice devices. I feel in love with the amaze so why do I have a sgs2. I like samsungs phones and I felt the amaze was heavy.
everyone quotes build quality and all. But I actually like my device light. I also preferred the bigger screen.
My main deciding factor was software. while I was digging sense. I realized that it eliminated the need for any 3rd party software.
I believe in supporting application developers. I do that in hopes that they will create more apps.

You can't port sense properly without having proper htc software it has nothing to do with the processor. Unless htc open sources you will not see sense ported properly to samsung devices.

HTC announced the launch of their HTCdev platform. It is intended to give HTC developers knowledge and tools to better integrate their apps with HTC Sense. Besides the tutorials, best practices, documentation and support, the portal will also offer the OpenSense SDK providing APIs for 3D display and stylus support. Its not actually the stuff you need to get sense to run. On a non htc device.
Samsung galaxy s2
I contemplated which phone to get for over a week. I was coming from a Sensation, which was rooted and running a custom rom. I went and checked out both the Amaze and the GSII several times. I liked the weight and design of the Amaze. I was concerned that the GSII might be too big and feel too plasticky. Also, I didn't like TouchWiz, at least from what I saw of it and could tolerate Sense. The only thing that concerned me about the Amaze was it seemed to have heat/battery issues as well as signal issues.
With all that said, for whatever reason, I ordered the GSII from Customer Loyalty. Even while waiting for me phone to arrive, I was doubting my decision. Well, now that it's arrived, I clearly made the right choice. What a great phone. Screen is brilliant, no issues whatsoever, and I was able to root it the day I got it. There are a few little things that irk me, but no regrets here.
Hope this helps.
Id wait to see if the Amaze gets unlocked and steady root before deciding. Screen is superior but damn thing is heavy and thick.
Both TW and Sense SUCK. Biggest difference is who will get a good ICS Rom first. Dev support for SGS2 is much much stronger.

there's perma root already for Amaze
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/one-click-perma-root-for-amaze-4g/
Based on build quality alone I'd go with the Samsung device.
Plus, the drivers are of course better optimized. Sammy has stepped it up to new heights with their software in the latest android devices. Too bad the galaxy nexus doesn't look as optimized as the GSII

So I have a G2x sitting in my shopping cart on tmo(not upgrading paying outright so no contract extenstion) and I'm faced with a huge choice. Do I buy the LG now or wait for the sensation? Like sense but always run cm for speed so every phone that I had that came with sense stock always was replaced with cm. There are pros and cons to both phones
htc sensation:better display and bigger(I actually like smaller screens)
g2x: more internal memory but less ram
htc is 1.2ghx and the g2x is 1.
It's such a hard choice to make. So my question is for those of you who got the g2x why did you get it instead of waiting for the sensation? What reasons did you have on going with the g2x as opposed to waiting for the htc? I really dont know if I should get the g2x or wait it out a bit. I am itching to hit that "complete order" button on the g2x though
I'd be coming from a mytouch 4g

I don't own a G2X, only played with one alongside my NS for a bit. I don't really know that you're going to notice a huge difference in speed coming from your Glacier on CM7 at 1.5ghz ...it's a really fast phone. Are there some other features you feel like your missing with the Glacier that you could get from the G2X?
Edit: I don't have a G2x in my cart, but I'm itching too as well...!
I was waiting for the Sensation....but I only made it 4 hours on the 15th before giving in and ordering online.
Only thing I like better about the sensation is the qHD display...but the G2X screen is still nice.
I also didnt want a huge screen phone that hardly fits in your pocket, the G2X size is good.
Well, I guess I'll just list my reasons out.
1. I, like you, don't like 4.3" screens, 4" is perfect for me and the display on the G2X is fantastic, even at 800x480 resolution.
2. I figured the .2 difference in ghz wasn't a big deal considering the resolution difference in the phones, 960x480 vs 800x480. As we've all seen, the G2X smokes the Atrix because of resolution alone, despite the 512mb ram difference.
3. Ram isn't going to make the phone run any better as we've already seen in Atrix vs G2X. It will help if your running tons of intensive apps at once, but it shouldn't be making much a difference 90% of the time.
4. A lot of devs are on the fence on supporting the sensation due to locked bootloaders. Even Cyanogen has said that they may not be supporting because of that very issue. And dev support is VERY important to me.
5. HDMI Mirroring on the G2X. This feature may also be on the sensation, but I haven't heard of it yet.
In all, I'm very happy I got the G2X. It runs like a champ and that's on Froyo. I can't wait till Cyanogen7 comes out.
P.S. The Optimus 2X has already been overclocked to 1.3 and 1.4 ghz if that means anything to you.
Hope this helps man. Good luck with whatever you get.
I never want a phone that has Sense on it.
Simple choice.
Well I got it because I'm a phone junkie. And I will be getting the sensation as soon as it drops. The G2x is a great phone much better than the vibrant and when it get GB it will be better than the nexus s.

Thanks for that man! Is that true that Cyanogen really might not support the sensation? Dev support is also very important to me. I never rely on carriers, always the community. I too am iffy about a 4.3 inch screen. I think my screen on my mt4g is pretty big enough for me especially since I have two android tablets for when I need a bigger screen android experience

Overall you guys are happy with the g2x? build quality is solid? any issues like bad displays or any nonsense like that?
Im in the same boat. im kinda leaning towards waiting though. The g2x is an awesome device but the larger and higher res screen on the sensation is enough to make me hold off.

if this is indeed true then i would get the g2x also. higher res screen (960x540) is nice but not as important as dev support. Btw, where did you read that cyanogen might not support it?

So all these hours that I've been deciding... I decided to do it. It was in stock when I first put it in my cart, when I went to check out it said it wasnt available for immediate shipment. I looked at the main site and sure enough, it was out of stock Guess I will be calling the closest store in the AM seeing if they have any in stock. After looking at some vids of the sensation I think it's just too big for me. I think the biggest I would go is 4" Hope I can pick one up tomorrow
Hopefully! I'll tell you now my store was pretty well stocked and I was there about 2 hours after they opened. Funny thing is the sametime I was going in I counted about 5 or 6 other people going in for the same thing...good luck! =P

I'm personally waiting on the sensation I have a g2x its a nice phone I only use it for HDMI mirroring only use for me. I'm not scared of lock bootloader just be harder to crack. People said the g2 was unhackable and look at it now. Motorola signs thiers and uses encryption. The thunderbolt was hacked as well. If their is enough support it will be broken. Alot of developers are going still get this phone. The evo3d will be hacked as well once either phone is hacked well have an opening.

Engadget had a post today saying that HTC was considering unlocking the bootloader.
In a market where the (good) phones are currently even so far as specs are concerned, a company would be shooting themselves in the foot by restricting a system that the others are leaving open.
My 2 cents.
My other 2 cents is if you can wait, then wait. Play with the Sensation when it comes out. You like it, buy it. You don't, buy the G2x.
My last bit of change, if you are content for the time being with the phone you have, don't jump for either until at least a month after the Sensation has come out. Right now, the G2x user experience for the majority of us is frustrating and I can only imagine the Sensation will be the same. Just wait and see what comes of both of them.
Get all of them!!!!! :d:d:d:d:d
I posted a TON of information why I didn't like the Sensation. The encrypted locked bootloader was high on the list but here are others:
-The Tegra 2 is like 33% more powerful then the dual-core snapdragon
-HDMI/microUSB = No HDMI Out + Charging (since no TV's support the MDLP yet)
-Locked encrypted Bootloader + New Sense = Mercy of HTC for bug fixes
-NVidia pushing devs for enhanced Tegra Apps = No go on non-Tegra devices
-Lower Res Front Camera
It does look like a sexy phone though. We'll see what problems it has out of the box compared to the G2x.
The G2x does have its problems but Tegra chips are new. Most work pretty well out of the box. Most of the issues we have is from the phone shipping with a 2.2 Kernel and everyone is flashing the leaked 2.3.3 rom. The drivers and stuff get funky but we're expected to get an updated kernel soon (the OS was already leaked).
I would agree though that I would wait a few weeks. While the G2x is great, it would be best to know your options to what best suites you. The Sensation is due out soon and you can compare the two side-by-side.
If the bootloader was unlocked, I could "possibly" live with the other stuff.
Wait and see what our big gingerbread update looks like on the g2x because like someone said before, this has been a frustrating experience so far... once we get that bad boy out and assuming it is a stable, quality build with much better driver support then the sky is the limit with this device! it will be the tegra2 flagship phone for the next 18 months
few things about the sensation that bothered me from my n1, and this is an HTC issue, their external speakers are a joke to say the least, poorly positioned, horrible sound, never loud enough... the g2x's external speaker is pretty solid in my opinion. And the HTC cameras are nothing to brag about either. I saw a video of both phones doing 1080p recording and the Sensation had a horrible red-shift problem...

Honestly, I love this phone but the lack of custom ROMs is starting to annoy me. I want a damn MIUI ROM or at least something other than CM7 and EaglesBlood (I love AOSP though but MIUI on top of AOSP would be perfect). HTC phones always seem to end up with the most development behind them and their touch panels are some of the most sensitive in the industry (quite unlike the G2x which annoys the hell out of me sometimes with how hard I have to press on it). I think the tides will start to turn on HTC development though with the locked bootloaders.
That said, between HTC, LG, and Samsung - I'd pick the Samsung. For one, HTC uses Snapdragon chips - Qualcomm has a long (very long) history of promising that their chips will do this, that, the third, and even the fourth - but they never come through. Tegra 3 is coming out this year though and that's going to be a beast to contend with - the Exynos from Samsung absolutely decimates the Tegra 2.
Build quality on my Captivate was phenomenal - I've never had an HTC phone with great build quality - and that's going all the way back to the PPC-6800. There have always been issues. This is my first LG phone and while I enjoy it a lot, the touch panel sensitivity is a huge issue when I'm gaming and really needs to be fixed.
Also, HTC tends to say that the phone has "x" amount of storage space but what really happens (like what happened with the Inspire) is they partition and format it in a way that means you get slightly less than half what they advertise. HTC also has a history of shoddy driver support.
The only pro I see with the HTC is how fast HTC does device updates - that said, they're always sloppy releases and devs have to take them apart anyway - add in the locked bootloader and I don't really see a lot of devs going that way. Also the TegraZone is quickly growing - developers are really taking to the Tegra platform and producing some astounding applications as a result. There is no Qualcomm or Samsung zone and Tegra-optimized applications will not run on another chipset.

There has been some rumors that T-Mo is skipping this one for the Hercules, which will be a 4.5" screen beast, but like jlevy said, nothing confirmed yet.
Hi!
I returned my Samsung Galaxy S2 back to the store and am now waiting for the HTC Sensation. While the Galaxy S2 is a nice phone, I really despise the TouchWiz. Even with ADW Launcher EX & WidgetLocker mitigating the terribleness of the interface Samsung has built, the stock apps still are very uncomfortable to use - especially e-mail, messaging and calendar are lacking. And most of their other attempts at apps aren't any better - dismal at best.
The back cover is unpleasant to remove which is peeving if you like to switch the battery to a fresh one (although spare batteries are not released till mid-june) or regularly move between different countries and therefore like to change SIMs (like I do).
I also would have preferred a capacitive home-button, instead of a physical switch.
Other bugs (which will probably soon be patched) are bothersome as well, like the 3G data connection regularly stalling - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097612
Specs-wise I think having a higher resolution screen will be a very nice addition, the lower amount of RAM & internal storage probably won't be all that noticeable. I wonder why HTC didn't include an HSPA+ radio, but I think that is something I can definitively live with.
Are any other Samsung Galaxy S2 expatriates lurking on this board? What were your Galaxy-experiences, why are you now waiting for the HTC Sensation instead?

Why? He shared a consice rational review based on how the phone met his expectations. With OP having owned a SGS2 I look forward to a direct comparison to the Sensation by someone who has used them both as their daily driver.
You and epsix get bashed because you're rude, immature, and banter between yourselves like 5 year old school girls at recess. All while adding nothing constructive.

I returned my SGS2 as well and got Sensation instead.
Sound quality wasn't very good even with Poweramp.

Next Thing
I fully charged my SGS2 and turned on Google latitude (As i was travailing), my phone was in the belt pouch, after about three hours i pull the phone out to make a phone call i found my phone burning hot and battery was almost drained. Couldn't bare any more.
I came back home after few days, returned SGS2 and got Sensation.
Sensation is so far so good, Over all very satisfied.

I didn't mean to paint you as a fanboy. By the same token I'm not a fanboy either. Before the disaster that was the G2X my last five phone's were HTCs and I really liked all of them. I had to get the SGS2 because the Sensation wouldn't have been availbale before the G2X had to be returned to T-Mobile. I would have seriously considered the Sensation if that wasn't the case. I'm a phone geek which is why I'm following the Sensation; not to bash it. Both phones are going to have considerable strengths and weaknesses. We should be able to discuss them without threads turning in to page after page of "yes it is," "no it isn't." Peace.

i completely agree with you.. but it will never happen because everyone has their opinion and that is what causes all of this nonsense. but fair is fair everyone has a preference but to force your preference on others really pushes my buttons. and you do have to admit they are other who go to other threads to bash others for what they want i do visit the sgs2 forums but out of respect i dont post there because i am not at this moment considering the phone but for knowledge i like to read how it is going.

I disappoint... Galaxy S II is much better!
Since 2003 I'm a HTC sure user but now I have to disappoint at all with you and with HTC!
I'm very sorry the new sensation is just considered worse than Galaxy S II but we have to admit this is the thuth!
1) Also if the Galaxy Display resolution (480x800pxl) is lower than htc sens (540x960) its technology is better than htc because is "amoled" and so we have a lower battery consuption, better coulor and luminosity, and better view when there is much sunlight
2) RAM: 1024Mb for Galaxy, 768Mb for htc: no words.....
3) Internal memory: 16Gb or 32Gb (depends by the phone version) for Galaxy while htc sens have got just 1GB! no words still!!
4) cameras: Samsung first one 8mpxl, second one (frontal) 2mpxl; for htc sens is 8mpxl the first one too, but 1.3mpxl the sencond one....
5) battery consuption: with a very similar usage Galaxy SII lasts about 2 full days, while HTC sens just 1/1,5days
I'm very sad to tell it but this time I'll change and I'll buy a Samsung...
Good decision OP, who cares about SamSux. I'll give give them 2-3 month and all hell will break lose in there. SamSux bashing SamSux, look at our development section phones isn't release and no clockwork mod yet and we have 3 roms already. That just tells you HTC is more superior than SamSux. Untill they change their filesystem, HTC will be prefer choice for dev community. Don't matter what spec they have.

I loved the fact that the Galaxy S2 is a very sleek design, thin and light. But the drawbacks - especially in the software area - are very obvious. Their replacements of stock Google apps are, in general, not better but much worse than the original. Plenty of bugs still plague the software - the current version of Music player causes random reboots, data connection is stalling all the time.
Sense (from what I could test on colleagues phones - mainly Desire HD) seems much more thought out and usable to me. I will, still, probably switch to a stock Android ROM, should one arise. But I don't want to be dependent on that.

While AMOLED certainly does produce excellent black levels and saturated colours (maybe even oversaturated), after owning a Nexus One with AMOLED since release I do think the drawback of the technology is the inevitable screen burn-in you get after a few months of use. Nothing that is really bothersome, but LCD technology certainly does have its advantages (besides the higher resolution)

Considering the high RAM usage of Sense, 1GB would have been nice - but still, 768MB should be plenty.

The actual available application memory on the Galaxy S2 is about 2GB, the rest is formated as an internal SD card. In my situation, I typically have about 500MB of app space used - 2GB would have been a nice, but that will still leave me with plenty of headroom once my Sensation is here. A 32GB SD-card will take care of all other storage problems (mainly podcasts, music).

This will vary greatly, but the battery access cover on the Galaxy S2 is very flimsy and uncomfortable to remove. I always carry a second battery for my Nexus One, I will do the same for my Sensation. Changing batteries on the Galaxy S2 (as soon as replacements are available in stores) will be a hassle.
i've done the opposite i've got rid of my sensation and have back ordered the sgs2 the biggest killer for me was the locked bootloader
i know that htc have said they wont lock any more phones but as yet they havent said that they will unlock previous handsets
i know i'm going to get flamed but i really didnt like the sensation it just didnt sit in my hand properly the sgs2 feels better ...... i know it feels cheaper but whats the point in having the expensive feeling phone if it feels wrong in your hand and therefore is difficult to use

You may get flamed by some of the fanboys, but at the end of the day it's all about what feels good to YOU and stuff the rest. I again prefer the more solid feel and try to avoid "cheap" plasticky feel, plus have been put off by plenty of users in many forums I've been to who knock Samsung's lack of updates. Hopefully for you they sort this out. Good luck with your choice
I probably still have a month or 2 before the Sensation is available here, and am hoping for some positive news re the bootloader saga.

I currently have a G2x as well as the Atrix. Ordered the Sensation and the SGS2 as well. Been using both the G2x and the Atrix for a while now and so far, I'm inclined towards the Atrix even though it has the locked bootloader simply because Ive had too many random reboot issues, freeze issues with the G2x (even though I've returned it twice) and I'm not concerned about the light bleed issue.
Once I've received the SGS2 and the Sensation (This Tuesday woohooo!!), I'll have all 4 to test with side by side. Will narrow it down to the top 2 and those are the ones I'm keeping I usually have 2 phones (1 work, 1 personal). If anyone has any suggestions or want me to look at/compare something in specific, let me know.

So, the Sensation has been out for a while and for me it has not lived up to my expectations. ICS is right around the corner for me but I'm sure it will make things somewhat more bearable until I do upgrade.
What is everyone planning on replacing their Sensation with?
Yesterday, I got to mess around with the Galaxy Note. All I have to say about that phone is that it is obscenely big. I love it. It's the only phone out now that is something truly different. Too bad it's AT&T.
The only other thing that is currently for sale is the Galaxy Nexus. Other than the fact that it's running ICS there isn't much to get excited about. I think I'm going to just keep my Sensation till the New Nexus phone is released and get on that one early.
I'm not a fan of Samsung's phones or touchwiz but I feel like HTC is just making phones while Samsung is experimenting with new forms and new ideas. If Cyanogemod 9 was out and if it were available on Tmo I'd be all over the Note.
What are you hoping to replace your Sensation with?
after so much Android, I'd like to try an iPhone or a WP7 device. then again I have my XE since one week only so I'm still in love
Replacing it now with Galaxy Nexus, ordered international version on dailysteals. I do not need the latest and greatest but want to have no skins and reliable software. I had custom ROMs since G1 but want to see how reliable is original Google software on hardware they test it with.
Sensation will go to DW who will replace her Vibrant.
Galaxy Note.
Or it's future WP7 equivalent because I can.
I'd go for the next iPhone only if it will have a 4" display. I really want to get myself an iPhone and see for myself what's all the fuss about.
But if Jellybean will be as innovative as ICS was when it launched I will definitely stay with Android and go for the next Nexus.

I just got my sensation. To be honest, in my opinion, companies comes out with every new versions of everything. But all in all, they're all the same. I was gonna wait for the HTC One S, but I figured, .3 difference on speed, just a little better on screen res. and beats? Not much of a difference, the sensation alone is fast and snappy, there is no reason for me to get anything high end because the sensation itself is a good device that pretty much do all the work. That's just me though AND, the sensation has a lot of love from the DEVs.

My personal experience is contrary.
My colleagues at work have iphones 4s. They often take photos for documentation. Their pics are generally ok for a phone camera but nothing special.
From what I see on a nearly daily base in real world, iphone photos are in no way superior to the pics I took with my X10i or take with my Sensation, which I think look remarkably clear.
Iphones produce exactly the same amount of crap as other phone cameras do.
Be warned ;-)
So it seems my thread questioning about anyone getting the Relay has turned in the the Dev thread for it since for some reason XDA doesnt want to make a thread dedicated to it. I personally ended up buying a Note 2 which is why I dont follow this thread anymore but I just recieved a PM saying the thread was moved so I figured I would change the title of the thread from "Any one planning on getting the Galaxy Relay 4G" to "Galaxy S Relay 4G Development Thread".
Definitely looking into a replacement for my G2, haven't really seen anything convincing thusfar. With a S4, this just might do it.

Thats what im thinking. I hope that the rumor of a 5mp camera is wrong and it ends up being an 8mp but even if it is a 5 as long as it has a good sensor and flash ill be happy. So far it seems it will basically be a Galaxy S3 with a 4" screen and a QWERTY minus 1GB ram which really doesnt matter. Ive never owned a samsung before but i guess they are really easy to root with a program from samsung called odin. Hopefully CM will be supporting it.
Either way, it could be the next best upgrade for Desire Z owners. Especially with so many discouraged people with HTC and their policy's. They can keep them, and their phones. No ICS update, not even for related phones where we could bum the driver over. Not to forget how locked down the phone is. Plus Samsung phones are more consistant.

Yeah Samsung seems to be the way to go these days. HTC locks their bootloaders, both HTC and LG dont provide updates, Sony phones are just not even close to the competition. Samsung provides the ODIN program so you can do what you please with what you paid for plus it seems they are providing pretty decent updates with the S2 and Note both year old devices getting Jelly been. Where my year old G2x is still on GB.
I definitely plan to replace my wife's G2 with the Relay. I've had a Vibrant and now the TMO GS2, I love working with Samsung phones, much easier.

The only tmo mytouch that wasnt terrible was the first one. I had the slide and it was ok but had a locked bootloader and the genuis button is so stupid, never would buy another mytouch. HTC keyboards are the only ones I've liked. The spacing, depth of key press, and layout are the only ones that I've cared to use. Everything else I've tried feels like I'm using something cheaply made.

Either way I'm waiting for my T-Mobile contract to end. Once that happens, I'm going to give T-Mobile a decision to make. Either give me a new phone of my choosing, or I switch carriers. A lot of my friends do this, and they end up with a brand new phone, like Samsung Galaxy S3's, but they're out of contract and desperate to keep you in it.
Carriers tend to give new contracts better deals for phones then those who just got their upgrade. Also, there's a lot of other carriers who offer a lot more for less then the big US carriers.
