Whats the best way to backup apps & settings when using custom roms? - General Questions and Answers

Still having wifi issues with ALexanders Miui for X10, and wanting to know any advice on the best way to save/restore apps so that I dont have to start fresh on every minor rom update... Thanks!

Titanium Backup is really good for that, backups app data and the apk to your SD for when you need 2 restore apps.

havent heard of that one,.. i think i'll look into it.. sorry, im not the OP but i was interested in it aswell.

Titanium Backup
Thanks, titanium backup looks the goods.
Can you usually restore apps okay when going to different roms?

Apps yes, it just installs the apk. Data, depending on which data and ROM yes. I've backuped everything when using ARHD and never had a problem restoring everything when I wipe and upgrade it. When I put on MIUI I didn't let it restore all the data, just a few things to get call logs, save games n stuff.

How to restore apps after flashing?

Hi guys
In the WM world I was used to re-install all my applications after I flashed a different rom.
Is there some way to restore my apps with android after I flashed a different rom?
Maybe titanium backup?
Yep, titanium backup is the way to go. It backs up your apps and app data on the sd card. After you flash, simply download titanium backup again, and select restore user apps and app data. Simple as that.
okay, ty! That sounds great if it is that simple I think i will give the new CM6 a try

[Q] help with nan backup!

i have a rooted phone and on my current rom im allowed to move about anything to my sd card so i was wondering whats the difference between doing a nan backup and just moving certian apps to my sd card? im planning on upgrading my phone and i dont wanna lose my apps and specially my bookmarks. so any help would be really appreciated. thanks very much.
Hi,
I'm a neebie but i think i have the answer to your question.
With a nandbackup you backup your ROM, not your apps. It's used in order to restore your old ROM if you have a problem whan you change or upgrade it.
If you just want to backup your apps, sms, contacts use an app as Titanium Backup or Mybackup. I use Mybackup since two years and i never had any problem.
Hope it will help you
Nandroid backup is the same as a system image on your PC. It's a snapshot of the entire system, OS+Apps.
Aright thank u buth. Ill try mybackup as im not worried biut my rom. Just worried bout my apps and such.
when your making a nand backup, you can also backup your apps by making a nand+android_secure backup. or you can use titanium backup to back up your apps

[Q] Must Apps Not Working On My Pad Since Fashing

Hey, I wondered if any one could help me figure out why about 75% of my apps ont work on a custom flashed ROM?
I have tried Revolution HD and some 2 others in the development thread. the ROMS themselves work perfectly fine but most of my apps force close instantly. when i revert back to the stock ROM everything works fine and my apps all work again. can anyone help???

are you wiping everything, including data, and both caches when you install the rom? and how are you restoring the apps? titanium or something similar? or just downloaading straight from the market? if ur using titanium, make sure ur not restoring system settings OF ANY KIND.

Well I've used the revolution HD full wipe.zip which I would have thought wipes everything.
When it comes to restoring apps I've used my backup root and I've only backed up apps and media not system setting. Once I've restored them I've updated them to latest version if possible and tried to reinstall them which also didn't make a difference.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong.....
Thanks for the reply

Question about Titanium Backup

Hello Everyone,
I have a question about Titanium Backup. I run backups for all my apps (without data) and when I run a factory reset I have to reinstall everything. I understand this because that erases everything including Titanium Backup from my phone. My question is am I doing something wrong and is there a way to recover your apps with Titanium Backup after a Restore or Reset of your phone? Because once I reinstall TB after a reset none of my backups are there obv. But I have to go and re download everything from the market which is a pain in my behind Frankly. So in closing either TB should have some sort of cloud storage for there users where their apps are being backed up to OR they have something like this already and I am blind. I have looked several places but everywhere I go and it says this is possible they are just showing restoring apps with TB after a new rom is flashed...Not completely reset.
Thanks for any help that can be provided!!

I had the same question when I first started using TB. yes you do lose it when you factory reset, but go into the market and redownload it and the pro key if you have paid for it. and you can batch restore your apps an Data. I do it alot cause I'm always testing ROMS. Btw get the full version it has some nice features like batch install without having to click install for every app. makes restoring a breeze

The backups are stored on your SD card. As long as you aren't wiping that, they should still be there in the Titanium Backup folder.
TB does have Dropbox sync, at least in the pro version. Don't know why a factory rest would delete your backups though, does it also delete photos, etc?
Well all backups from TB are on the sd hence u need not worry !
Also just install TB from market and u will notice all of ur backups are ready to be restored !
consider shifting the TB app to the System intead of Data hence it can survive a factory reset !!
i have installed the all in the system !!
Thanks everyone for your replies, I just upgraded to the Pro Version. Thanks for all the help, yea I do the same thing I am always reflashing different roms to try out and I use Odin to go back to factory a lot too. So thats why I brought the question up. Thanks again!

Switching to a custom ROM and keeping all apps/data

So I am considering possibly installing one the CM ROMs on my Explorer (I guess CM10 if there's a stable ROM). However, I don't want to lose any of my apps or data (e.g. saves in games, settings in various apps, messages, contacts etc.). Right now I am on stock ROM with DarkTremor's a2sd script and all my apps and data on the SD-EXT partition. What would be the best method to make the transition? Backup all apps with Titanium Backup and restore once I install the new ROM? Or is there some way to install a new ROM and keep the apps on my EXT partition working?
If there's no easy way to do it, I'll probably stick to stock ROM. I don't really want to have to reinstall all my apps manually.
Some of your data is in sdcard, so no worries, contacts should be synced to Google, and messages can be backed up with Titanium Backup(Pro?).
Titanium Backup Free can back up and restore apps and app data(includes settings), but not batch, so you have to get Pro or back up/restore all your apps one by one.
However, transition from Sense GB to CM JB/ICS is super-massive, so don't report any bugs if you choose to restore system data.

Titanium backup is the best tool for backup and restoring apps. Get the Pro version its worth it, i change ROMs like in a day or two so i always have a backup with data of all my apps and whether u are coming from gb to ics/jb or going back to gb , just restore the apps. And dont ever restore system apps on a new ROM it is not recommended and csn create instability.
I hope this helps

I already have TB Pro, so no worries there. Thanks for the reassurance, I may look into this further. I've been getting more and more fed up of GB when I keep seeing new devices with ICS or JB, think it might be time to make the switch.
So I can restore all user apps and data, but I should leave out system data? Sounds OK, I don't think I'll lose much by not restoring system data.
Yup I do the same.. Just the system apps.. and keep a copy of the titanium backup ( with apk as i use the free version ) on my comp.. System data wont mostly restore as GB and CM10 are almost incompatible.. you will get loads of fcs..
Hit thanks If i helped !

you do not restore system data on any ROM. It will cause FCs. You should only restore apps and app data
