[Q] ICS to finaly bring HD video to Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love my Nexus S phone but it's almost the only Android phone being sold today without HD video. The camera's resolution should support 720p video (as the Galaxy S), and the problem is the lack of support for HD video by the native Android operating system.
Now, that the Galaxy Nexus will support 1080p video recording with a native Android, do you think the Nexus S will get it too?

No. our hardware is limited.

This is a question I am very interested in hearing the answer to as well. It would he nice to see HD video capabilities as well as the super fast shutter speed be provided by the OS to the Nexus S and not a hardware exclusive feature of the Galaxy Nexus.
It would also be nice if the update to ICS fixed the screen burn in on my phone caused by the notification bar.

I think it's the same camera as the Galaxy S

Have you tried fast burst camera in the market? Just until we get ICS. Works very well

Not even 720p?

i recall the nexus s not getting 720p recording due to codecs

Nexus s is not doing 720p video. It is not a limatation with the os.
Search the forum if you want a detailed reason why.

Yes. Do a search. It is a hardware limitation, not software.

Nexus s camera sensor is different than galaxy s sensor because they needed the extra space in the phone casing for the NFC hardware in our phone. The sensors are physically differant. The pics are around here some where if you search for it. It shows both camera sensors to compare.

So that means the Nexus brand will always have a lesser camera
The Nexus One had a 5MP at launch with no HD video at launch.
The Nexus S still have a 5MP camera with no HD
No, the Galaxy Nexus still have a 5MP camera when everybody else use a 8MP camera.
I can't understand why google equip their flagship phones with relatively crappy cameras

Ahh you are falling foul of the MP myth dude, MPs are a size issue so unless you are printing posters then its not the MPs but the sensor too. You could have a 12mp camera with a ****ty sensor and an 8 mp with a good one and it will take the better picture. It is also dependent on the cameraman too of course.

If you use google plus follow Romain guy he uploaded a sample video filmed with the gn and it is outstandingly amazing, screw the megapixels this bad boy is fantastic!

Someone can confirm that video mode have an image stabilisation option? Or this feature is only important for Apple?

The Galaxy Nexus has it, will the nexus have it nobody knows. It depends if it is hardware or software based.

Thanx! I hope the Galaxy S2 will also get this feature with an Ice Cream Sandwich.

I think the GS2 already have this feature implemented

HD video recording?

Will the nexus s ever receive an update from Google to allow it to capture 720p videos?

Honestly HD video recording sucks on phones and the nexus s can't support it.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
who cares about HD, let's worry about the crappy frame rate it gets right now.. the videos look like jello and it's choppy. I recorded side by side with nexus one and N1 doesn't have the same problem.
I believe the consensus is that the limitation to 480p video recording is based on hardware not software and as such can never be lifted. I'm not really bothered though, my phone is a phone first, a browser second, a PMP third (thanks to the VooDoo sound mod and SuperCurio) and everything else last.
It's limited by software, not hardware. Else we'd have a class-action suit for false advertisement.

Is that because the Galaxy S phones can do 720p? Our hardware isn't theirs. We have a lot of different parts.

Again - where has Google ever advertised that the Nexus S is 720p capable or that it will ever be provided? It's certainly not on the tech specs page: http://www.google.com/nexus/tech-specs.html#
or on Best Buy's page
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Google+...ile)/1484107.p?skuId=1484107&id=1218262482328
Feel free to file a class action suit, but I'm going to guess that it will get summarily dismissed.
Swetland has come forward and stated that the Nexus S lacks the extra hardware processing components due to lack of room on the PCB that was required for the SGS to do 720p.
Question from supercurio:

Is VIdeo Capture 480p choice due to WebM codec limitations on this SoC? software compressor Maybe?

clock rate limitation of the SoC. Galaxy uses an external image processing part as a work around. Not enough PCB space in N.S.

I'm not entirely sure where everyone is getting the impression that 1.) the Nexus S does 720p OOTB or 2.) It will be provided in an update by Google. #1 is decidedly false and #2 is unlikely at best given the information we have.
You may eventually see an implementation (software solution) similar to that of the Nexus One (720p @ ~ 24fps IIRC), but don't expect it to be official.
Whether you want to believe it or not, that page used to say 720p. I remember linking the spec page chatting with my brother about 720p being listed but not usable.
Maybe three weeks ago.

A ROM can't do hardware changes (inb4 Nexus One 720p). It's a hardware limitation.
Please use search, there are many threads about this discussion in the past.
Yea, the Nexus One 720p is just upscaled anyway.

?? 720p front camera???

I just seen that the nexus 7 got a mod that makes the front facing camera able to record in 720p.... My only question is. Does our nexus s 4g have the capabilities of the same thing???

on the Nexus7 it is a simple property file tweak - on the other hand I don't think that either camera on the Nexus S is capable of 720p recording
No. Neither the front facing nor the back camera can record 720p video. Hardware limitation.

Slow motion video

I love my nexus 5, I just hate how it doesn't have slow motion video! All of the other hot phones are doing it nowadays, and google just left it out. Is it possible for this to come in a custom ROM/is it being worked on already?
Up
I'd like to know if it's only software related or it's also hardware related ?
If it's only software can we expect mods ?
Thank you

The HTC ONE X have it too, if I remeber
There were a thread on xda to add this feature to the N4, but I don't remember if something was released. The socket of the N4 is in theory able to do this, so I think the N5 too.
I'm really interested to have this feature on my N5. I will try to find something
No other phone can do it. The iPhone 5S has a camera that can record at 120fps. No Android camera has ever supported this feature yet.

It's not true slow motion that you see on TV though. It's software based. They can't record at 120fps!
The 5S is the only phone to record video at 120fps.
The Moto G can record slow motion although its not 120fps

sorry but it's not software based at all.. I own a s4 and iy can record 120fps videos in 720p you can se it's actually 120 fps by furiously increasing file size when recording...

That is entirely incorrect. The GS4 supports it. The only difference is that the resolution is reduced while shooting slow motion, whereas I believe the 5S does 720p. The phone is actually shooting at 120fps though - it's not using software interpolation.

It is true slow motion video, they record at higher frame rates and replay at 30 fps. My htz resound had this in 2011, [email protected], the new Samsung's and htcs have it as well, they don't shoot 720p at 120 fps but they do 480 up to 240 fps (note 3). Also there is many iOS apps that allow you to record up to 1000 fps on iPhone 4s and newer. It is software related, also all tegra 4 phones can use camera awesome and record 1080p @120fps.
Bump. Is it possible?

Sorry for revivng the thread, but Google mentioned that the N5 can do 8MP 30FPS with the new camera HAL they are working on. If we can have full resolution 30FPS, 120FPS HAS to work in 720p. BUT we still have to wait for it.
And now with 5.1 lollipop, look at what's possible today, lol
Does the Nexus 5 comply with this HFR-Recording Standards?

It won't happen, 5s has special coprocessor in it so you won't see anything nearly as good for N5.

From what I know, the iphone 5s records at 120fps, this is all possible because of a hardware combination of the camera, and their in house processor has a dedicated chip for this. It's the only phone that does this, the HTC One does this, but only at about 1/2 the frames. So I stand by my word. The N5 will not see comparable slow-mo to the iphone or likely even the HTC One. Source http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/17/iphone-5s-review/
The Xiaomi MI2 have a 90fps option without co-processor FYI
So I think the N5 can take at least 90 fps without any problems

G2 also has slow mo, to an extent. Don't see why we can't get it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crT0AmZWiUk
