"Google has confirmed that Ice Cream Sandwich will also come to the Nexus S, according to Engadget. Two Google officials told the site that the company is "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically [it] should work for any 2.3 device."
The phones that run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) are: HTC's Desire, Desire Z, Desire HD, Droid Incredible, Droid Incredible 2, Evo 4G, Incredible S, and ThunderBolt; LG's Optimus 2X and Optimus One; Motorola's Atrix 4G, Droid 2, Droid Pro, and Droid X; Google's Nexus One and Nexus S; Samsung's Galaxy S; Sony's Xperia X10; and T-Mobile's G2 and myTouch 4G."
*waiting patiently*
I have no idea how this "Nexus S will get ICS" means G2X will get ICS.
I predict that G2X WILL NOT get ICS.
That's pure speculation on your part. There's no confirmation of anything.
All this means is that phones currently running GB should have what it takes to support ICS. Not that they will be getting an update...
It lists the O2x, which is still on Froyo.

This can go both ways. And remember both O2X and G2X released on 2.2, instead of 2.3.
And Atrix 4G confirmed not getting ICS.
Please edit title. There are girls here as well =)

lmao definitely watched the same video as you.
Anyways, if I got ICS on my phone I'd feel complete inside!
Personally I don't really care if LG releases ICS for the G2x as long as the guys at Cyanogen get it working and a ROM is released.
It doesn't make google look good if a recent phone with their name on it doesn't get the update :/
It will make people not trust as much in google labled phones in the future.

Indeed. The G2x is an LG phone "with Google." Not "by Google" or "from Google." There's a difference. This is why I hate things like this. People read into it what they want and make bold accusations without facts.
The article stated "Theoretically [it] should work for any 2.3 device." The OP read, "it will work on any 2.3 device." Reading comprehension, not everyone's strong point

Although it'd be nice for them to make a backwards compatible OS for cryin' out loud. I don't know much about OS making, but would it really be that hard?

Sometimes. Plus sometimes by keeping backwards compatibility you bring inherent os problems with you to the new system, unless you do something like emulation. The golden handcuffs. (Not always the case but you get the idea. Don't feel like typing long explanations from my phone.)

Lots of people seem to have the wrong impression about the "with Google" branding... For anyone wondering, the definition of a "with Google" device:
"'with Google' phones have been optimized for use of Google Mobile Services, providing easy access to Search, Voice Search, Google Talk, Google Maps, Gmail, Sync, YouTube and Android Market (where available)."
Nothing more, nothing less. There's quite a few "with Google" devices, many running manufacturer skins (Sense, Blur, Optimus, etc). Doesn't mean jack really.

I totally agree with you. It looks pretty fugly compared to the cap. I was actually thinking that it could have been pretty sexy if they had taken the Omnia 7 style chasis and android-fied it and thrown in some more metal instead of cheap feeling plastic.

The hardware should be relatively similar, probably most similar to the Epic 4g. I base this on the fact that it was originally supposed to be out Nov 14 (I forgot where I read this, androidandme.com maybe?), and that the model number is I9020. I highly doubt they put some next-gen hardware in it that would make it impossible to port the OS to our captivates.
I hope it comes with worth while hardware improvements if its only standard Galaxy S then there is no point upgrading if you already have Galaxy S variant..
how does this mean we are going to be the first ones to get gingerbread / comb? (not trying to be a ****, can't convey tone in type, this is a genuine question) I understand a port might be SLIGHTLY easier, but what if it has a lot of different hardware? (as someone who is not really familiar with phone development, I am genuinely curious) and I really don't think that the release of this will mean that samsung will continue to support its other phones (c'mon people, its sammy). I think Ill certainly buy one, WOOT for updates from google!

It ties in with it being easier to port to our phones, and I highly doubt it'll carry the new 1.2ghz processor.. considering that's slated for the new flagship samsung
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/exclusive-samsung-flagship-phone-with-gingerbread-and-huge-di/
come to think of it, this is samsung's dream phone, they get to utilize all their sexified hardware, and not have to give a crap about software updates since that would (presumably) be handled by google. I think it was meant to be <3 and also WHY THE HELL DOES T-MOBILE GET ALL OF THE DAMN GOOGLE EXPERIENCE PHONES!? (best buy's leaked info suggests it will be through t-mobile, heres to hoping that it carries the at&t bands like the vibrant does)

Well, the assumption was that it wouldn't have a lot of hardware differences (same cpu, gpu, modem, etc.), meaning that porting the rom over to work on the captivate would be a lot easier than something with next-gen hardware, which would necessitate writing custom drivers and whatnot.
Looks like my assumption is turning out to be false though. Sorry to wreck everyone's Friday afternoon with this, but check this article out:

It better not have the same lag issues as the current crop, otherwise im not buying it.
If it doesn't have tons of ram i don't want it.
omg it makes me so sad to see this after ive only had my captivate for a month but imagine what the next year or two will bring!
Unless the samoled 2 is also a solar panel, I don't experience the best battery life...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Probably gonna be bogged with RFS and and TouchWiz. If they bork the nexus S with RFS that will seriously suck. I know we can run lag fixes etc. but it would be nice to get a phone that doesn't need to be hacked just top be functional (totally would still root it, but its just the satisfaction of knowing that I wouldn't have to ^_^)
I'd still pick the Nexus S.
If the Captivate has such awful battery life, I can't imagine what a 1.2ghz processor and a 4.3" screen will do to it.
The Google Experience with a 4" screen is my dream phone. The S2 sure does look pretty though.
with all this extra power, bigger screen etc, I couldnt believe what kind of a battery it would need to be HALF DECENT.
Companies should stop competing in cpu wars, display wars etc and really revolutionize a battery that will last at least a full 24 hours with moderate usage.

This isn't fake at all. I have a very good source at Samsung who can confirm this device, although those slides are not final. Like Engadget said, these slides are 100% real from Samsung... they just used an image of a different device to get their point across. Not meant to be seen by the whole world.
Anyways, the device (which can be confirmed real by Engadget, BGR, AndroidCentral) is called the Samsung Elite: http://briefmobile.com/new-samsung-elite-specifications
It is the successor to the Galaxy S line and it's due in early 2011 for announcement.

Sounds reasonable, I was wondering if it's samsung advertising our a mock up of what might come next.
People around here are so argumentative over things where they have no facts. Also I don't get what people expect of a phone, I find battery life between meets expectations to excellent depending on what rom and modem I'm running.
And where did the notion that amoled displays hog power come from? that's the opposite of true, I don't know what the droid x is like but go buy an evo and check the battery life, it's far from good.
I'm excited about the nexus s and hope the rom and kernel port to the captivate, I just wonder if the modem will be a problem, I'm guessing it will be hsupa+ (4g) and wonder if the hardware is the same in that area and if the modem file will support the att 3g bands, or will a froyo captivate modem.bin work in gingerbread? I'll have to wait and see. As for my next phone I'll wait for a dual core device.

I'm sure you've had several threads on this, but should I return my Galaxy S 4G for the G2x? Is that big a boost in performance? I love stock Android, hate Touchwiz, but the Galaxy S has an amazing screen. Also, does the app Wiimote Controller work with the G2x?
Huge boost in performance. The G2x works like "butter" as many have been saying. G2x's screen is amazing, some are saying it's one of the best on the market right now and even outshines some of Samsung's screens. Wiimote does not work YET due to LG adding in their own bluetooth stacks into the phone instead of the more common ones, however it's generally believed that a ROM (Probably Cyanogen) or a software mod will fix the issue. Hope this helps!

I exchanged my Galaxy S. for the T-Mobile G2X. Yes, the screen is a big change, the Galaxy has a much better screen. But after about 10 days, I've forgotten the difference and was really enjoying the speed increase of the G2X. If you think you can get over the change in the screen, go for it, if you don't, you better stick with the the galaxy S or wait for the galaxy S II coming out soon.

Tmonews is reporting the ICS updates in the near future. The only devices mentioned are GS2, Amaze, and Sensation. I was pretty sure we weren't getting it before but now I am almost positive that we are not. Perhaps if the O2x gets it then we can port it over.
I am waiting to see when will the Galxy Note or Galaxy S3 come to T-mobile. If the date is too far away(We are always that last to get anything) then I am getting a $399 Galaxy Nexus.

Yeah I agree. We aren't gonna see an official ICS update. This phone caused way too many problems for T-mobile/LG. If we were to get an update it should've been before the update for the SGS2 since the G2x came out before that phone.

Ok, so since everyone wants to sit here and bash. Lets me burst everyones "official ICS" dreams. Its not gonna happen. It'll most likely never happen. How do I know this? I sell phones. If T-mobile had plans for it, why would they move forward in production of newer model phones? Oh, and the reason HTC sensation is getting it is because they make money on it. The G2x is falling behind in the market where everyone wants the Galaxy series (say hello to the galaxy blaze and the soon GS3) or HTC. If no one's been paying attention(and I doubt anyone does) HTC, G series, Samsung, and apple are the sellers. Not Lg, not pantect, not any company thats been a waste of funds for the last 2 decades of cell phones. But again, you know, ROMS aren't official, but they're only thing your G2x will get ICS with. So, yeah. Go cry in a corner now that you know LG hates you.

Oh thanks a lot for the explanation captain obvious, hence the topic title being "I am 99.9% sure we are not getting official ICS."
I don't quite understand who is "bashing" anyone in this thread.

As long as the O2X gets an official ICS update from LG, then we'll be fine.
Interesting post from the O2X thread, regarding ICS update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426191
Maybe an incompetent LG representative (since the Wind "O2X" is a G2X without the Tmobile logo) or on the contrary.

Not including any neutered roms we might get (no video drivers = half functioning phone), it seems that T-Mobile has finally sounded the death bell on ICS on the G2x...
from T-Mobile on facebook
T-Mobile USA Sorry for the mix up. Lg did confirm that the G2x would not get ICS. ^AS

why would they want to when t-mobile doesnt even sell their phone anymore
No surprise
But that just verifies what everyone suspected...we'll have to rely on the O2x....
Thought this was already known awhile o.o

It wasn't as of January LG said yes, they would. Last month they pushed the update from Q2 to Q3, now they are in fact saying a flat out no ICS for G2x.

Maybe I am missing something, but once the O2X gets ICS, can we not somehow get its video drivers for the G2x?

Yes that's not a problem, this thread is kinda pointless especially without a link of this guys info... even then we have at least 8 other threads about the exact topic.

That's fair enough, but not big news to hear anymore, if the O2X gets it we are good, its everyone else that suffers!

If the O2x was getting it, so would the G2x as the only difference is the way the internal drives are partitioned. O2x will be cancelled as well, every major hardware manufacturer that has a Tegra 2 Harmony chip has said that those phones will not be getting ICS. You can bet that the O2x will not get it as well.
Confirmed Again No ics for G2x

LG said three O2X is getting it, so that's all i care about! We will be fine guys, just wait...

That's not the only difference, T-Mobile USA is involved with G2X lol, the O2X isn't.

The thing with all this is that both companies screwed us over. In my case, I bought a high end android device a year ago expecting it to last me the 2 year contract I was signing with a phone company that would also be good. 13 months later, I read that even with a phone, that spec wise is still great, I won't be able to experience what is being offered by android because the manufacturer simply doesn't care anymore and I have to rely on modification and root to get what I paid for in hard earned cash? and to top it all off, T-Mobile begins charging me for tethering that when I signed the contract was listed as a feature that was included. This is why android, phone companies and all the manufacturers are going to ****. As a consumer we have to put up with all this and go through having to pay for new devices that have the latest "version" because the manufacturers don't want to spend time on a device they have already profited from even though it is fully capable of being up to par with most new devices. XDA, Rootzwiki and all the great people of the shared android community make this bearable, yet it is beginning to not be enough that we have to void a warranty in order to be content. I am tired of this and with the G2x being my 8th android device in 5 years of android I am just done with the same story every time.

It's ridiculous how they tease us
Android smart phones make dummies out of us.

Realistically, LG can only upgrade the international O2x if they make a small attempt, the G2x has to be tested & "approved" by T-Mobile and they're too lazy to do that (they deceptively make it sound like it's completely dependent on LG). So our best hope is to get the O2x's drivers working for a CM9 or AOKP build for the G2x.
I really am iffy about switching to the new 21y update. Should i dive? Or is it a stupid update?
Please LG release ics, your our only hope!

If you use GPS go for it then use CM7.2 RC3.
Though if you're fine and don't have any problems like me, stick with what you got.
