[Q] help! unrooting without power button. - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

recently the power button on my nexus s(i9020) stopped working (all of a sudden). i was managing till now with cm7's volume wake feature. Now im thinking of getting it fixed under warranty but i need to unroot the device for that.
problem here is all the instructions i can find need the power button to navigate through the recovery menu. i have to unroot AND flash a stock rom without the power button!
i dont know what to do :'(. pls help!

You're going to need the power button to re-lock the boot loader - no way around that.
You can use fastboot to flash a stock AOSP system (/system, /data) and erase userdata, but you're going to need that power button to confirm the lock.

okay, so basically there's no work around with it ... thanks anyway. will they atleast fix it for some cash? i mean without the warranty?

Even unlocked they may fix it under warranty - if it's an obvious hardware issue. The language when unlocking states that it may void the warranty. Even on the Nexus One (which said it does void the warranty) I got a bad trackball fixed under warranty when I told them it was only broken due to being in a car accident.

i use the twrp recovery instead of clockwork. my power button is dead too. you dont need the power button to select in the twrp recovery. also, to select in the bootloader since im without the power button, i firmly flick the back of the phone with my finger right under the lens. that works every time for me, and i spend a lot of time in recovery and in the bootloader when testing out kernels

thanks guys. i just downloaded the beta version or whatever u call of the next clockwork mod and it supports the capacitive keys! yay! ill be handing it over to samsung today. lets see what happens

[Q] Help - Return to Stock Recovery/unroot

All, I need your help. I need to get back to unroot/stock bootloader as I may need to send unit to Asus...
I already flashed the blob from the Asus update on their site, which I believe removed root... however, I cannot get into the stock bootloader/recovery (when holding power and up on volume nothing happens). Is there any easy way to just flash back to the original software?
Please, any advice would be very appreciated.
Thank you
i don't know how as i haven't even rooted yet, but for anyone that has unrooted and gone back to stock recovery i think it would be helpful to make a "back to stock thread"with a quick how to.
You need to press VOL DOWN + Power first to get in bootloader then Vol up for recovery. Make sure you delete su and Superuser.apk too.
Hmm, Asus support had said to push Volume up and the power... is this supposed to do anything?

It will put the TF into APX mode which is useless for us right now because we lack the correct files.
Ah, the reason I was calling in was about the sleep of death issue. They said they knew of a way to fix it (doubtful) and had instructed me to hold volume up and the power button... when nothing happened, I was worried that my root/CWM was blocking something so I asked them if I could call them back. I think I was able to unroot and get the original recovery back on. I called them back, but the support person I talked to was unfamiliar with the process. She said her supervisor would call me in the morning. I will update the thread with whatever they have me do in APX mode (unless they made a mistake with the instructions during the first call).
Thanks all!

I'm thinking like this... connect the phone to your pc. I am also assuming you have CWM recovery.
Then:
-transfer a stock rom from here on your sd storage (make sure it's for your model)
-get ROM Manager and search inside it for a "reboot into recovery" option, or use any app that does that.
The phone is now in recovery
-at this point, you navigate like this: back button goes back, home goes to main screen in CWM, menu goes to the next selection in the menu and search selects the item. The idea is that instead of power button, you can use the SEARCH button. Volume buttons are working for you, as you've said.
-now select install zip from sdcard->choose zip->select your stock rom and it should flash everything, including stock recovery.
-now connect your phone again to the pc, and open a command prompt.(again usb debugging must be checked)
-type:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
(Thanks simms22)
Now, you should be good to go. I'd also be careful about the screen turning off when you're back on stock, with a broken power button... don't let it do that!
dont forget to relock the bootloader.. fastboot oem lock

[Q] HTC Desire S bootloader menu without power button

I have an HTC Desire S with a broken power button. I manage to power on the device by using quick battery in-out trick, and unlock screen with an unlock app. I want to root the device and install custom rom.
The problem is that i cant select items on the Bootloader menu since the power button doesnt work. Is there some way to select items without the power button?

How is the power button broken? You might be able to fix it if you can take the device apart which is quite easy, I've done it. However, that would have to be a risk you're willing to take. I'm not sure if you can navigate the bootloader without a functioning power button. But I know you can access fastboot from the command line. Is your device S-OFF? Is the bootloader unlocked?

The power button became lesser and lesser responsive over time. i had to press multiple times before the screen would unlock. Eventually it just stopped working. I have taken the device apart once, with hopes of fixing the power button, but it seems that the power button is a tiny button surface mount directly to the main board. I cleaned eveything out, but no luck.
The device is S-ON. I havnt done anything other than installing the Official ICS upgrade. How did you fix your power button?

I should've explained why I took mine apart, I took mine apart in order to mod the unibody thing. I've seen websites that sell replacement parts so if you feel confident about repairing it yourself then you could always consider that.
Back to your initial question. You will be on the most recent HBOOT due to being on the ICS upgrade. Follow this guide by skanob in order to downgrade your HBOOT. Then use Revolutionary to S-OFF and install a custom recovery to your device. Then you should update your HBOOT to 7.00.1002 so that you have no difficulties with any custom ROMs.
Remember to read all the guides in full and make sure that you know what you are doing and that you are prepared before you start doing anything to your device. And make sure you are willing to risk damaging your device. Every device is different, personally my DS had no issues with any of these things I used as you can see in my sig.
Good luck.

This is the procedure that i am following. Step 1 itself is to unlock bootloader using htcdev.com/bootloader . This procedure requires me to select HBoot from the bootloader menu, which i cannot, since the power button is broken.

Unlocking the bootloader doesn't require you to select anything. The guide tells you to type some code into a command line. Your PC will do everything for you. To get in to the bootloader all you do is connect your phone to the PC, open a cmd box and type:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Click to collapse
It will then turn off your phone and boot into fastboot.

[Q] Boot Lopp + No Power Button

Hey guys, I just got the older HTC One S (C2) from my sister , to play a bit around.
I rooted, unlocked without any Problem, but after flashing it just stuck in a bootloop . And I can't even escape.
Unfortunately the power button is broken and i can barely turn it on by making contact with a pin needle (works rather badly)
ADB won't find my device, and even pressing all buttons the same time won't change a thing.
Anybody got an idea or some other plan?

Beg your sister for not doing to you what you did to her phone...
Your phone will power of by pressing "Power" for 10-15seconds. Is the button itself GONE? How? Once powered of press or in your case "jumper" the "power button + Vol down" at the same time. You can release power when display turns on and just keeping "Vol down" pressed will bring you into bootloader.
You will have to try getting to fastboot. Or pay 40€ for a bootloader repair. There is no other way :/ for
As you did not tell anything about S-OFF you're probably S-ON. So you may be forgot to flash the kernel???
If flashing means you flashed a custom rom. Bootloader is working in every case.
May you post some more infos?
-Firmware / HBoot
-Recovery version
-rom/KERNEL installed
-any other modifications?
Did you face any issiues while flashing?

If you've damaged or replaced your bootloader and the phone will not boot, all you can really do is send it to a service centre, so they can reflash the memory. I doubt very much there is anything you can do as a "home" user.

Yeah, sure. Kernel control all sorts of things for the device, including the amount of electrical current sent to the hardware such as the digitiser, cpu etc. Flashing an incorrect kernel can literally fry the components.
Besides, he has damaged / lost / replaced his bootloader, which sounds like there is a problem that may not be rectified. He may even have flashed the kernel to the bootloader partition, who knows?
There is only one kind of brick. Hard brick / soft brick doesn't exist, despite what people say. It's either bricked or it's not. If this user can recover his device, it was not bricked. If he cannot, then it is. I will also include in the term "bricked" if it can be repaied, but only with industrial equipment available to a service centre,

If the screen turns on follow my guide about lg flashtool. Link in my signature.
If the screen still remains black you have to claim your warranty. If you cant claim your warranty then you have to buy a new motherboard and replace it for yourslef or pay someone to buy a new motherboard and replace itnfor you or buy a new phone. JTAG is not possible, because every msm8974 soc comes with disabled JTAG. Your other option is to find the right connection for the emmc on the motherboard and solder wires to it between an sdcard adapdter.

This will not be covered by warranty. The only way to get this covered by warranty would be to not tell the truth, which is fraud. Any damage is purely the users fault and not a manufacturing defect,

Yeah, I get your point, I see it like this: Soft"brick" is when a normal user (not users which are in this forums, but users which haven't heard about flashing and rooting) can't use his phone, for him it is literally a brick.
Hardbricked is when you have a damaged hardware/bootloader and not even the best "recoverer" in the forums can't fix the phone on software - layer.

Can you load the secondary bootloader (POWER + VOL UP + VOL DOWN)? If not, then it's hopeless. Why would you flash another device's kernel?

Do you have insurance? Most bank accounts do have them as part of them. If so, throw it on the floor and claim for a new one. They won't bother replacing a smashed screen and damaged housing so they'll just send a new one out ?
