[Q] HTC Desire S bootloader menu without power button - HTC Desire S

I have an HTC Desire S with a broken power button. I manage to power on the device by using quick battery in-out trick, and unlock screen with an unlock app. I want to root the device and install custom rom.
The problem is that i cant select items on the Bootloader menu since the power button doesnt work. Is there some way to select items without the power button?

How is the power button broken? You might be able to fix it if you can take the device apart which is quite easy, I've done it. However, that would have to be a risk you're willing to take. I'm not sure if you can navigate the bootloader without a functioning power button. But I know you can access fastboot from the command line. Is your device S-OFF? Is the bootloader unlocked?

The power button became lesser and lesser responsive over time. i had to press multiple times before the screen would unlock. Eventually it just stopped working. I have taken the device apart once, with hopes of fixing the power button, but it seems that the power button is a tiny button surface mount directly to the main board. I cleaned eveything out, but no luck.
The device is S-ON. I havnt done anything other than installing the Official ICS upgrade. How did you fix your power button?

I should've explained why I took mine apart, I took mine apart in order to mod the unibody thing. I've seen websites that sell replacement parts so if you feel confident about repairing it yourself then you could always consider that.
Back to your initial question. You will be on the most recent HBOOT due to being on the ICS upgrade. Follow this guide by skanob in order to downgrade your HBOOT. Then use Revolutionary to S-OFF and install a custom recovery to your device. Then you should update your HBOOT to 7.00.1002 so that you have no difficulties with any custom ROMs.
Remember to read all the guides in full and make sure that you know what you are doing and that you are prepared before you start doing anything to your device. And make sure you are willing to risk damaging your device. Every device is different, personally my DS had no issues with any of these things I used as you can see in my sig.
Good luck.

This is the procedure that i am following. Step 1 itself is to unlock bootloader using htcdev.com/bootloader . This procedure requires me to select HBoot from the bootloader menu, which i cannot, since the power button is broken.

Unlocking the bootloader doesn't require you to select anything. The guide tells you to type some code into a command line. Your PC will do everything for you. To get in to the bootloader all you do is connect your phone to the PC, open a cmd box and type:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Click to collapse
It will then turn off your phone and boot into fastboot.

Usually the yes/no prompt is selected by the volume up/down buttons.

[Q] HTC One S - Cannot get into Bootloader

I have searched the forum but no luck on this one.
When I Press Power and Down Vol HTC One S just reboots - it does not go into Bootloader menu.
I cant take the battery out as suggested elsewhere because battery is non-removable.
Fast Boot is Off in the Power Menu.
Any suggestions ?

Hi,
maybe you can use the ADB to get in the bootloader.
just look onto this HERE
the text there is english because i've only the german explaining and so i don' need to translate it.
EDIT: Finally got into bootloader by connecting phone to a PC with USB Debugging enabled and entering "adb reboot bootloader" in console.
Hi zobojoe, any luck with getting to the bootloader? I have HTC One S imported from Germany with T-Mobile branding and I want to get rid of that branding by flashing the stock ROM but can't get in to the bootloader same as you. What version of phone do you have?
Hi guys i've search the xda maybe this could help you to get the debranding off and get root acess on the phone i don't testing it because i've only the HTC sensation

Hey, thank's for trying to help! I've seen the thread you posted before - used it to get CWM and root but I've spent last 3 hours trying to get the stock ROM in my phone (I really hate the T-mobile branding) and nothing worked. What I did was I downloaded RUU_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.53.401.2_Radio_0.15.31501 S.19_10.12.31501S.06L_release_251412_signed.exe and tried to flash that using RUU. It didn't let me. So I at least got the zip file from the exe (temp method) and tried to flash that in CWM but id didn't work either (probably because it was not signed). So I tried to extract the system.img and radio.img and pack it again in a new zip and sign it myself - didn't work either. Kinda stuck now. Help from someone familiar with packing ROMs would be highly appreciated. I can't be the only one trying to debrand my phone .

Yes it it. Before I unlocked it, the RUU update ended with error 170. After unlocking it RUU update started kinda flashing something, but then ended with black screen with HTC logo and then turned into RUU fail! red warning.
Hi Andrew SM
I too have been able to adb reboot into bootloader but can't understand why power + vol down just reboots the phone and not go into bootloader as it should ?
Is it the case that it is rebooting straight into recovery mode when I do power + vol down and then just boots ? - what should I normally expect to see when I boot into recovery mode ?

I don't think it is recovery - you would se a black screen with a phone icon in the midddle of it with stock recovery.
But I was able to get to bootloader with VOL DOWN + POWER finally after unlocking bootloader via htcdev.com (bootloader screen starts showing *** TAMPERED *** on the top, but that is normal). And you have to disable Fast boot in Settings -> Power of course.
Good luck!
Boot loader
Little late to the party, but I've found the best way to get into boot loader wiht any consistency is to hold the volume down and power button for five seconds or so, then let go of the power button (while holding volume down), then tapping the power button. Boot loader should pop up
Hope this helps!
Brilliant! Worked perfectly! Thanks very much.

I cannot enter the bootloader too, so I have follow your instruction and now I can enter inside bootloader. I was wondering why this was necessary.
Anyway I just have the massage : locked and NOT the TAMPERED advice.
Anyway I will wait to unlock my one s, I wanna see if a different unlock way from htcdev cames out because I do not wannt risk that the warranty could be void. Have anyone tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578908 ?
Thanks a lot for this trick! This works immediatly!
Another easy way to get into boot loader every time is :
1. power off phone
2. hold the volume down button ( until boot menu open )
3. press power button for about 2-3 seconds then let go

Not able to get hboot screen

I want root my HTC Desire S. While finding out what steps needs to be done for rooting, I come to know that HBoot version is necessary.
I shut down my htc device. When I press volume down & power on button hboot screen is not coming at all & phone starts normally. I want to note down hboot version before starting to root. Any idea why hboot screen is not coming? If I have to see the hboot screen what needs to be done?
Check in settings->power whether "fast boot" is enabled. If it is, disable it. Then power off the phone and try volume down + power again.
also you can adb reboot bootloader

Thank you. I was able to see hboot screen & noted down hboot version also
The Fast Boot option enabled in power settings gave me exactly the same problem in the very early days when I had finally decided to mess with my device. A short, but useful thread for beginners.
If fastboot is enabled you can still enter Hboot if you take out the battery and then put the battery back in before holding down the volume button and the power button.

[Q] Problems unlocking bootloader. Cannot select Yes.

Hi there,
I have a HTC One S and I am wanting to unlock my bootloader and root in order to put CM10 on my phone.
I have gone through the bootloader unlock process and have succeeded right up until the point where it asks if you want to unlock the bootloader or not, it gives you two options, "Yes" or "No" and tell you to press the "Power Button" to confirm selection...
I select YES, press the power button.... Nothing. Nothing happens at all and I just have to hold down my power button to reboot.
Why is this happening?!
I read elsewhere your phone must not be a courier branded phone. I am in the UK and on the '3' Network. They gave me the phone. Is this why I can't do it?
Also, I say about putting on CM10, but wondered what is the recommended ROM? I would like to have a jelly bean ROM.
Thanks to all, in advance!

A good ROM that has recent updates is JellyBam. Thats what I use as my daily driver. Lots of customizations and tweaks on that ROM. Another good one that is popular is Dark Jelly. The 4.1 version of Dark Jelly is more stable, but there is a new thread posted with a 4.2 base for folks to experiment with.

[Q] Accessing HBOOT Please help if you can

Hey community! I have my girlfriend's MT4GS in hand. She wants to factory reset it but cannot remember the pin code for the factory reset. She called me to ask for help and I tried to walk her through the volume down+power method of reaching hboot to factory reset from there. It wasn't happening and I figured user error. The next day I tried it myself and it isn't working. I used to own the MT4GS and have used this method over a hundred times quite literally. I have been to Youtube just to be certain I was doing it right since it has been over a year since I personally owned a Slide.
It isn't working. I'm thinking maybe something is wrong with the power button although the power button functions otherwise. The volume down button functions otherwise as well. I am stumped.
My question is, is there a software method to enter hboot? The phone is stock GB, it is not rooted and I assume it is S-ON.
Any help? Much, much thanks in advance to all the geniuses in the community! I hope there is an answer.
adb reboot bootloader
or in a terminal
reboot bootloader
might need to grant superuser permissions in terminal cant remember... so yeah...
Did you pull the battery before trying the volume down+power combo?
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk 2
Superuser permissions means you're already rooted right. Like I said, this phone is not. That adb method can't be used without root can it?
As for pulling the battery, I have done tried it many times now. The problem lies elsewhere.
Hmm...any other ideas? Can I answer any questions to clarify anything. I'm stumped.

Yeah terminal reboot you need to be rooted but you don't with adb, just turn debbuging on
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Thanks friend! I will try that when home from work!
Ok, adb worked to access the bootloader. You can't factory reset from the bootloader until it is unlocked. I tried to unlock it but the damn power button has foiled me again. I get to the point in the booloader unlock process where you must select "Yes" or "No" to unlock the bootloader and then confirm that by pressing the power button. The power button press doesn't seem to be working (consistent with the problem of the power button not working to enter the bootloader). Is there a known workaround to unlocking the bootloader without pressing the power button. This seems a stretch to me, but I thought I'd ask.
I'm in adb with the entire process done with the exception of this power button press to continue part which I cannot do apparently. Might it be useful to disassemble the phone and mess with the power button?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
so power button functions as it should all the rest of time? then opening it up to clean may not do much but unfortunately i cant think of any other way to select an option in the bootloader screen nor a work around to the unlocking process.
well maybe if you boot to download mode and follow the debricking process? just a suggestion i have no idea if it will help as ive never done it but i believe you can flash over current bootloader hopefully fixing your issue, that is if its firmware and not hardware causing the problem
SEE HERE
Can you access recovery? Can you use adb reboot recovery I think in stock recovery or cwm you can use the trackpad to factory reset
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk 2
did you try to turn off fast boot?

[Q] On black screen, warranty, ruu and other things.

Hi Guys
I'm in mildly troublesome waters and I was hoping that the people here would help me figure my way around a solution.
So about a week or so ago, my AT&T one XL (which is on CM10.1 stable) started behaving weirdly; the screen wouldn't turn on but all the touch functionality would still work as I was able to receive calls by just using my instincts on knowing where what should be. Now at that point, if I pressed different parts of the screen, it would turn on for a few seconds and then the screen would black out again. The buttons do light up.
But as of yesterday, my screen won't turn on no matter where I apply pressure to try to get it to turn on. The screen still works and I can randomly turn on 'Google Now' and and other stuff as long as I know where what is located on the screen.
I called in AT&T as my phone is still in warranty and they are sending a replacement. However, I'm now in a bit of a race-against-time to get my phone back to stock and hopefully even get rid of the *tampered* sign that shows up in fastboot. I was wondering what my options are to get this done at this stage as I'm not even able to tell when I'm in the fastboot mode. I'm worried that if I don't send it back with atleast stock settings then I'm liable to pay a replacement fee of 500$!
Also, does anyone have any experience with sending in a phone that was jailbroken and not running stock but still under warranty?
Any help/information would be great!
Thanks
Angadh
your screens cable is loose or damaged. is your phone s-off? do you recall if u had usb debugging enabled?

if usb debugging is on:
use adb to boot to blootloader then relock and ruu to 2.20 you would need to s-off to ruu to 3.18 or to spoof the relocked. tampered should disappear when you ruu.

So what I tried now was to use the hasoon all in one kit and clicked on the 'Boot into Bootloader' under commands. I got 'error: device not found'. That implies I'm not in USB debugging, right? So do I have any other options from here?

yea you can manually boot to fastboot. press and hold power. the capacitive buttons will blink a bunch of times, when they stop blinking let go of power, press and hold volume down.
then you can go on from there.
