[Q] Stuck/dead pixels - common Sensation issue? - HTC Sensation

Hi all,
Long time lurker, first time poster. A quick "thanks" to everyone who has posted in the sensation forum til now - there's a huge amount of helpful stuff in here, especially for an android noob such as myself.
In short, made the switch from Blackberry to Android a month ago, going for the Sensation. The first Sensation I ordered from Amazon had a "stuck" pixel (white) straight out the box. Returned it for a new one, which has been great until this weekend when I discovered another stuck pixel (red this time). As someone who tends to have quite dark homescreen/backgrounds, this isn't really something I can live with.
So I'm about to return it to Amazon once again, but this time I'm wavering as to whether to simply request a replacement rather than a refund, simply because 2 stuck pixels on separate brand new phones in less than a month is pretty catastrophic. Is anyone aware of this being a common issue on the Sensation? If so, I may have to look elsewhere - I'd budgeted for my new phone to last me a good 18 months or so, and at the moment they can't last more than three weeks!
Thanks in advance for all advice/help

Slightly OT but how do you find Amazon when it comes to returns, are they at all difficult to deal with? I'll probably be ordering my next phone from them.
BTW, welcome!

I got a blue stuck dead pixel on the left top part of the screen.
I'm also getting a replacement

u do no u can get an app on android the MAY fixstuck pixels, search dead pixel or pixel fix

mine also got a white point - don´t know if it was out of box or came just 3 days after use.
thought it was dirt, because I also could see it with screen of - but now I know it was a dead pixel.
Returned it to the shop and tomorrow I get my new one from amazon.
hopefully the new one will be allright, because the phone is great!

I have them if the phone is cold, which in this weather is often. Especially when I was in London today..
But they shortly go. It tends to be in top left corner above status bar..

gavin - yeah, I tried using Pixel Fixer. No joy unfortunately.
seagull - they're excellent to be honest, for high-value goods like phones they send a courier to pick it up(!) and the refund hits your account two days later. (Haven't ordered a replacement so far - the price of the sensation keeps dropping on Amazon UK, so I just ask for a refund, buy a new one and pocket the difference. Has dropped £35 since I bought it 3 weeks ago!)
Cheers all, sounds like a relatively common if not chronic problem. Fingers crossed it'll be third time lucky for me, I was just starting to get to grips with it. Hopefully the rest of my posts in here will be asking for help rooting etc rather than fixing hardware problems!

Definitely bring it back so

My first 2 (original, then first replacement) had this. My current unit does not. The dead pixels were one of the main reasons I was sending them in for replacements.

Both your phones had this? I've never had an issue with mine. That's damn unlucky

got today my new one: this time not only one dead pixel, they are nearly all over mixed with dust. called amazon and get it replaced again...this sucks

Amazon must have a bad batch

Threads like this are so senseless all you will achieve is to accumulate all users that have the problem. And yet the percentage of screens with dead pixels has to be really low. As with all LCD screens there will be ones with dead pixels. There its no reason for the sensation's LCD screen to have more dead pixels than others.

Just bad luck? 2 Sensations, 3 days.

Hi all! New poster here, old reader
I've just gone thru my second Sensation now (in 3 days), had 2 DOA's in a row. The first had the blue light "leakage" down at the home button and the headphone jack was defect. The other one had a battery cover that did'nt quite fit, the screen would creek and move some when you pressed it, the volume rocker was loose and it had touch issues.
I'm VERY dissapointed with the original Sensation and I've never used a DOA before this phone my entire life and now 2 in a row.
Now I got a gift card with the money instead, since I don't dare to pick up my third Sensation from the same store (the first 2 had the same manfacturing date on the battery cover) so now I'm not sure what to do?
Are there any "perfect" Sensations out there? Did HTC do a sloppy job on these phones (always had HTC smartphones before, and no major issues). This can't just be bad luck or can it?
Cheers!
Bad luck.
I've had mine since June or so and I haven't had any problems with it. No real Wifi death grip, no loose back cover, nothing.
Get one from a different store.
All manufacturers are having quality issues, or at least we're hearing about them more.
The more "trouble" consumers cause shops by returning faulty phones the more pressure will be put on the factories to improve.
Persevere, the Sensation is a top of the range phone
I bought mine since June and it doesn't have any problems too. All working great. I suppose its just bad luck for you.
Thank for the replies so far!
Ok, seems (so far) that I've had bad luck. I REALLY hope thats the issue, cause I REALLY love the phone, the design, the hardware etc. But I just can not pay all that money for a premium phone that ain't.... well premium
I took the gift card for the sole reason to try and buy the phone at another store, maybe it was a faulty batch or something, who knows. But two phones in a row, with the same production date (which I can't really remember right now june fifth China I believe, have to check when I get home) wich are both faulty has really made me think twice.
So the news you guys bring so far is really good news to me!
Hopefully, the next replacement you get is a perfect one! It's really an awesome phone and it's kinda sad to get missed out due to some defects. ):
Mine has a bit of play in the cover but that's just how it is so doesn't bother me.
Mines is good so far.... Maybe that store is selling fakes?

Nah, no fakes. It's one of our largest/most spread stores here in Sweden (deals with phones, computers, TV's etc etc).
The thing is. I'm really NO "sitting under the magnifying glas looking for dead pixels" kindof guy, so these phones really was faulty.
According to the replies of this thread though it really seems like bad luck. I will try to buy another one, in a diffrent store (well not by name but location atleast) and see if I get a normal working HTC premium sensation!
It just your luck...
What they are actually doing is giving you reconditioned or refurbished phones. These are cheaper for them and are usually ones that have had faults i.e firmware flash failures, broken screens etc.Demand a BRAND NEW DEVICE as they have to provide you with a new fully working phone when you get it.If you are in the UK we have trading standards that you could contact to start a complaint if they refuse you a new device

same thing happened to me, all replacements they sent me had dead pixels.
though, i used the replacement phones to get free accessories. lol
Just got my third Sesnsation (since thursday) a few hours ago. So far it's just perfect! Sweet! I has NONE of the flaws my 2 previous devices had.
Just to makr sure I got one from another batch this time I got a newer serial number, made in Taiwan instead of China. So far so good!
It pays of to be a whiny ol' customer sometimes

Absolutely, the more legitimate trouble customers cause by returning faulty goods, the more the stores will put pressure on the manufacturers to improve their quality

Mine has a dead pixel but im reluctant to get anbother in case it has more problems, like my mate having 1 million (exagerated) Desires that were faulty.1 pixel i can deal with and i think ill wait till i get a few more scratches on this beauty before i demand a new one
I'm also on my second phone. The first one was just bad all round, and nothing seemed to work properly. The second has terrible call quality and keeps dropping calls. the wifi also keeps dropping out. one minute I have four bars and the next I have nothing. it's like the "death grip" problem but still does it even if i'm not touching the phone. Also have the back cover problem and the screen freezing problem. I love the phone but it's the phone part thats always faulty, it is by far the worst reception I have had on a phone. Oh and just checked mine and it was made in Taiwan.

Any non defective MAO units at all?

Wanted to see if there are actually people with non defective finishes on their MAO black HTC one s after one week+
Looking at the other thread the problem seems to be almost universal, however I assume only users with the fault will look and post in that thread and is therefore not accurate.

It wont survive that. Last weekend I popped my phone in my trouser pocket, crossed the road and realized I had my keys in there. In that space of time it picked up about 4 chips along the top edge (same as on old phone) and a very tiny scratch on the (supposedly hard wearing) back. Any other phone I've had for the rest of my life would survive that.. Not this one which is actually marketed as hard weaning! JOKE!

Had mine 10 days, not a scratch anywhere, dropped it aswell, seems pretty sturdy to me.....
I've had mine 2 weeks, 1 big drop, and still looking fine as the day she was made.
The same here - two weeks no problems.
I've had mine over two weeks, dropped a couple of times, without a case and it seems fine. There is one minuscule dot on the top edge I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen the threads on here. USB port is fine too.

About 3 days and no any point...But this is my second HOS. First one had 3 damage in 20 hours... Strange....
Have IT now for twelve days and not one tiny scratch. T_Mobile Germany sells the Black Edition .

No chipping here. Using it for 15 days now and it is as good as new.

On my second unit after sending the 1st back with chipping. Only been using it for 3 days, but no marks yet. My other one lasted less than 24 hours before it got chipped.
Did the same as the other member, put it in my pocket with car keys by accident, still okay though.

[Q] Nexus 5 dead / hot pixels

Hi guys. I have browsed the forum but haven't noticed any post complaining about screen problems (beside one about yellowish screen temperature).
I was bloody excited hearing my package was delivered only to get hugely disappointed by 3 hot pixels on its screen. Two blue and one bright red almost in the centre of the screen.
Does anybody else found this problem? Or it's just me being unlucky?
Do you have any experience with google regarding to replacements? Is it stress less process or I will have to be prepared for lots of stress?
If you had device replaced was the new unit fault free?
Sorry but I am former Samsung customer (8 Galaxy note8 replaced due to dead pixels) I almost gave up hope for dead/hot pixels free displays

I've got 7 dead pixels on my Nexus 5. Going to phone them in a little, I'll keep you updated.
Be patient. I have spent almost 15 min listening to classic music on hold. They have asked for evidences -so I have sent them photos and still waiting for their decision.
Will keep you posted.
I was on the phone less than 10 minutes. Exchange an email with a couple pics attached, showing the defect on my device. Then, 30 minutes later, had another reply with all the information needed to receive a replacement. And keep the current device until the replacement arrives. For me, great service. Defect is like a leak under the front camera. Where it should be all black, there is a little hole that leaks light from the display. Odd.

I have no dead pixels but yellowish screen temp on low brightness. But this will settle with time, it is the glue that needs to dry out. It was the same with my n4.
One dead pixel
I have one dead pixel, almost in the center of the screen. However, at this resolution it's hard to notice, I think I'll keep it, I don't want to wait for an replacement.

Shoot why it takes them sooooo long in my case? Still nothing. I have received e-mail from them. Replied with some photos and still no reply it's been already 4 hours and you had it all sorted well below 1 hour mark
Just got off the phone with Google. I got a "high call volume" warning but was only on hold for 7 minutes. My guy was very helpful and said they'll send out a replacement which *should* be with my by the end of the week. I keep my current Nexus 5 until then & send it back in packaging the new one comes in. Just waiting on a confirmation email now that this is what's happening.
Edit: Email received & replacement ordered. Fairly painless process so far! (touch wood)

9 dead/hot pixels here, mostly in the corners of the screen. Called Google and was told to restore my device (I was on it at the time). They told me they'd email me the instructions and for me to call them back. I had already restored from Bootloader and I don't think my guy understood the difference between software issues and hardware.
Anyhow, new one is on the way, hopefully this one doesn't have any issues because I really like the phone.

Its not faulty, Google are only changing them out of goodwill, all companies have dead/stuck pixel polices and the higher the resolution the more dead/stuck pixels are allowable before the panel is deemed faulty.
I tend to disagree with you. Yes companies have their policies regarding to dead pixels and how they will treat the claims but do not forget about customers rights. For me dead or faulty pixel on the screen is not acceptable and if I feel unhappy I can (within 15 days) return purchased device. Of course if will do it this would be lose/lose situation as I will not have new shiny phone nor google my money. Thus they are happy to replace it (as long as it is as new and they will be able to put new stickers on it and sell it again - maybe next customer will not be as picky as me). So it is not really about "good will" as Google is not a non-profit organisation it's well calculated. On the other hand I would not expect such "good will" to replace the device after 15 days tho. But who knows maybe I am wrong

Dead Pixel

Have a dead black pixel. Should I return it? Will they return it for one dead pixel? This sucks just exchanged my gunmetal for silver now I have to take this one back.
Technically yes. But depending on the associate you get, they may try to smack the restocking fee on top.

I just had mine swapped for three backlights on the right side of the screen shining through. When compared to the display unit, you could tell that in those 3 spots, the display was adhered to the glass. I could tell because where the lights were on my screen, there were 3 black tabs where the light ever so slightly leaked around. So, mine must not have been adhered properly, hence the light shining through and slightly lighting up the right side of the display when viewing in the dark. At first, when I explained the why I wanted to swap, they began to protest. Once I explained the depth of the defect and how it effected my experience, they didn't hesitate. I think that as long as you go in with a good explanation and a way to make the pixel most visible, you shouldn't have any problems. Also, you have a defective device. Is that your fault? Why should you pay to have a brand new defective device replaced. Even if they try to raise a fuss, if you bring up the point that you didn't just pay however much you paid to get a device with defects, you'll walk out with a new, non defected device. Also, check the new one in store, right in front of them. Just a heads up, the rep I dealt with today, said they would be reselling my defected device as a like new refurbished device. According to the rep, there would be no repairs. The defects have to be a "certain amount of noticeable"... I don't want to believe this but you never know. Good luck!

Yeah, I'll try it, I was reading that when the screens are inspected they let one or two pixels slide by for European and American markets. In Asia people are very picky about dead pixels and they don't let any slide.

Got it replaced, this one has a little spec of dust under the screen. I can live with it I guess. Oh well it sucks. 5 phones later I guess I can live with this one.
Damn dude. That sucks. I know it's not the biggest issue...but it's there. You've been through 5? I went through 5 Nexus 5's . Took 2 months because of shipping. I'm trying to decide if I'm gonna live with the bottom of the right side of my speaker sticking out above the screen. I saw guy who works at VZW say that half the M8's he's come across have that. So I think I'll just stick with this one... Where's the dust at?

Lower half of screen has red tint - replace?

So I noticed today that the lower half of my display has a red tint, and now I can't stop noticing it. It's apparent in both night light and regular display modes. Do you think this is something they will send a replacement for?
It's very noticeable in apps using dark theme like XDA, reddit is fun, and imgur.

use that premium 24/7 support and report back how it was handled. we're all curious how it goes...
On first attempt, I used the chat function. They kept asking for a screenshot showing the red tint, but a screenshot doesn't work like that. Then after 45 min, I was told that this is taking too long and that I would get an email. I asked about a warranty replacement, and was told that is an option if this doesn't resolve.
I just want a warranty replacement...
I'll just call the Google Store during their business hours, obviously the 24/7 support and the Google Store are two different things.
Keep us posted.
I'll be calling the Google store first thing tomorrow, but in the mean time here is a picture of the issue. It's much more apparent in real life, but you can see the right side of the screen is darker than the left.
Just a quick update, they are sending me a replacement device. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have issues!
Good call. Yea that looks pretty bad, I would have returned it in a heartbeat.
Let us know how the replacement is. I have a XL and the top half has a pinkish hue. I'm debating if I should exchange it or not. I have noticed it on every device I've ever had with Amoled to a certain extent or another. It's for sure not as bad as other devices I've had. I'm debating getting it replaced. I'm just worried if I do the next one will have it worse, or a different issue that's worse. But for the amount of $ we paid for the phone it should be perfect IMO. I'll tolerate it on a $400 device.. not a close to $1000 device ($946 to be exact with tax)
Dunno. Ide exchange. I have had perfect amoleds on my note 5 and 7. Its possible to get a near perfect one.

I have the exact same thin on my Pixel 5 inch. Could it be the adhesive for the screen/digitizer needing time to cure? I read that in several places with some older phones and iphones. I might give mine some time and then send it back if it doesn't settle... Is anyone else having this issue? Or can anyone else confirm if their screens are perfectly uniform using a white screen?
Just went to a Verizon store and noticed the display models don't have this issue, I'm planning to get mine replaced...
Is there more than one factory making pixels? Or are they all made in the same place?
I know with the samsung line i had alot of issues with screens made in Vietnam, but all the phones made in China i had were perfect.

I received the replacement and it does not have the same problem, it has a uniform tint throughout the display. Now to see if they accept the warranty exchange or tell me that it falls within "acceptable ranges" and charge me for the replacement... I doubt they will reject it, but hey, it wouldn't be a possibility if they didn't put that in the warranty exchange terms

I wouldn't worry about getting charged... there were a LOT of 6Ps that got exchanged for the same defect and I never heard of anyone getting charged. I went through 4 Nexus 6Ps before giving up on the lotto and getting a 5X. The issue seems way less prevalent this time around, but OF COURSE my Pixel has an uneven screen. Its not as bad as any of the 6Ps I had, but I've had my Pixel since Monday and I just can't live with it. I ordered my replacement yesterday. So far, everyone that has gotten a replacement between here and the XL forum they have been defect free! Fingers crossed.

They won't reject it. Once they send you the link to order your new one they have already accepted it [emoji4]

Did you get yours replaced? How was the replacement? They replaced my XL but it was worse than my original. Sent the replacement back and now I'm waiting for my 2nd replacement.

I got a replacement and it is perfect. Good luck!
I also sucessfully got my Pixel replaced due to the right 1/3 of the screen being darker and pink tinted. One question though: for those who got replacements, did you send back the accessories (cables, charger) or keep them?
I'd love to have an extra charger...
