I just did the Gingerbread update 2 days ago, but this just started tonight..
I used the USB cable that came with the phone (for the charger) and plugged it into my computer to move some pictures from my phone to computer. This is the way I've always done it. For some reason, my computer wasn't recognizing my phone was plugged in even when the phone was set on Mass Storage. I unplugged and replugged a few times but to no avail.
And now, when I plug my phone into the USB cable while it's connected to the charger, on a wall outlet, it recognizes it like it's plugged into a computer and asks me if I want to transfer files and turn on Mass Storage.
It never used to do that before when on the wall, only when in the computer.
How do I fix this? Any suggestions? I also noticed my dad's Mesmerize does it also while on a wall charger, rather than just charge.
Any help is appreciated.
UPDATE
I just unmounted my SD card and took it out of the phone. Then I plugged the phone into both the computer and the wall via the same USB cord, and it connects just like it used to when I would plug it into the wall. No choice for mass storage, or to transfer/move files. So obviously it's something with the SD card?
I'm sure you guys already knew that, but just in case.
I also formatted my mass storage (SD card) thinking that would help.. it did not.

You are not alone
I have experienced the same problem ever since I updated my mesmerize to 2.3.4
I also noticed it doesn't hold a charge as well now that it recognizes everything like it's a computer. Charge now lasts about 60% as long as it used to.
NObody has an answer?

After I installed Froyo on my Captivate, USB is not working. When I connect it to my Win7/64 and Vista/32, I get the "USB device not recognized" on the computers, regardless if I am in USB debugging or not. I reinstalled the Kies s/w in the hopes that the drivers would then recognize the Captivate, but that doesn't work. So obviously USB tethering and Mass Storage are not working. Has anyone else had this problem and how can it be fixed? Thx in advance!
Have you tried mounting the phone in debugging mode? This has always worked for making the drives accessible.

Yep, I stated above that I tried with debugging on and off, and it didn't matter. Usually the phone would mount differently with it on or off, but now it's just not recognized. Very strange...
have you tried using a different usb port? i was having the same problem and got it to work when using a different usb slot
I'm having the same problem. It also often decides not to recognize when I've plugged it in to charge. Used 2 different usb cables, 3 different usb ports on my tower, usb ports on 2 different laptops, and plugged in using the stock usb cable/charger combo. I'd like to flash a new rom, but obviously that's not an option for me right now. It double sucks, cuz I just did a factory reset. I also tried the above suggestions to no avail
EDIT: When I unplug the phone while charging (once I finally get it to recognize that it's hooked up and should be charging), it still shows the battery icon as being charged
same problem. sort of getting mad. i have tried lots of stuff. un install re install drivers a couple times now. both pre select and post select usb modes on the phone well any way lots of stuff. all the usb plugs, tryed putting the plug in the pooter first then the phone on all ports. phone with sim in/out all ports and memory card in/out all ports i reall want to try darky's rom. as sweet as xxxbunker.com is with flash on the phone, i would trade it back for 2.1 so i can use my headphone jack for speaker phone again. please some one help
#edit: my wifes phone still works fine on mounting with the vista pooter. she still has 2.1#
I've looked everywhere and cant seem to find an answer, so i figured i'd start a new thread.
My captivate used to connect to my computer just fine, but there was another computer it would just NOT connect too! Well, after a few months, it stopped connecting to my home computer as well.
I have USB debugging on, the phone is rooted and everything. When I plug it in and mount the USB drives, i get drives J and K on my computer, one for the internal storage, and one for the SD card i have in the phone.
When double clicking any of those drives, it just sits there and reads forever without ever doing anything. I can use the SDK to run "adb devices" and it see's the phone, Odin One Click finds the phone but freezes on reading file line, or just fails all together.
Any ideas?
Try reinstalling the samsung usb drivers and restart your computer, that'd be my first step.

You have to be on the touch wiz home screen if you're trying to connect to Kies, otherwise turn on USB debugging and you should be good to go

SeenNotScene: I've uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed several times. I've been having this problem for a couple months now and i've tried everything i can think of. It doesnt work
bkhams: I dont even know what Kies is? I always have USB debugging turned on, and once connected i bring down the drop down menu and mount the USB so i can access my phones files as if they were another drive.
I had the same problem, and Samsung peeps told me I had to use the USB cable that came with the phone, low and behold they were right. Connected right away with the USB that came with the phone, could that be your problem?
I had the same problem in the past and it was actually a hardware problem with the Captivate and not anything with the computer. I ended up taking the phone in and they exchanged it for me.
I do not know if yours could be having the same problem, but that was my experience. Frustrating, to say the least.
Hmm... Could be the hardware i guess.. I know its not the cable though because i've only ever used the cable that came with it.
Have you tried connecting to the USB port directly off the motherboard? My connections were "sketchy" at best when using the ports of the top of the computer case. Once I connected directly off the MOBO, zero problems since.
Sloved!

Thank you for suggestions! My front USB connector is probably connected to some internal HUB, not going straight to the motherboard and wont work. Connecting directly to MB USB solve the problem. I am a little bit surprised... but whatever - M$ bull*hits. I spend couple of hours yesterday to find out whats going on. Thank you again!
my phone wont let me select what usb mode i want i have been in settings and put to mass storage and nothing rebooted nothin can someone help me my phone is in my sig
come on people who can help my my phone will charge via usb in lappy but i cant get into mass storage wont even pop up to let me pick what to do
never seen this before - although it only charging might indicate more problem with laptop than phone (ie laptop not presenting anything phone recognises)..
It sounds like your phone thinks its just plugged into a wall charger...
do you have any other symptoms?
none at all got a panasonic tv with 2 usb ports on it that i usualy plug it into that and use it as a mass storage device to play my movies from it but still the same guna try diffrent usb lead but i dont think it is my lead as it charges ok with it
didnt want to double post but only way to get it seen agen, seems like my mini usb port on phone is a bit lose now this should be covered by htc but i need to got stock again how can i do this with a faulty port.
Hello there
Ive got a problem. I wanted to Root my SL101 (Firmware 4.0.3 Android) with Peri or THe 1 Click Solution. But the original usb cable only charged my device when I plugged in to power socket. BUt USB on PC didnt work. PC never found device, didnt search for driver and no "BLing" for USB device plugged in. So I ordered a new usb cable (not original, cause asus sl101 already 3 years old). The new cable worked. USB found on PC. Data transfer worked. Charinging over power socket worked, but no charging when connected to pc. When I enabled USB Debugging, it said "Device removed" and then "device started". But there was no deivce seen on computer. No "internal storage". So there is no possibility to transfer data and Root won't start cause it doesnt find device. I installed all driver (ADB driver, also tried Asus Pc Suite), but it doesnt work. Is my device broken or is it because of the cables? Are there any working cables on internet with better quality and supporting USB Debugging? The non original cable is from vhbw.
Is this a common problem with Asus Sl101? I searched for related problems. SOmeone also had problems with Asus original cable. It also charged plugged in to power socket but not with PC and Pc never fund USB conection, never searched for drivers. He ordered a new cable (original, cause his case was years ago) and it worked.
Any ideas how to get it work? Its not really important to root it though, but I wanted to buy Titanium Backup so I can save my apps, and I need root for it. There are f course plenty other apps needing root. Any advices?
Not sure about the data transfer error apart from lack of drivers, but the PC will not charge the tablet while it is running - at least for the TF101 anyway, the only way to get the PC to charge it is to either turn it off while its plugged into the PC and leave it overnight for trickle charge, or I think also if the tablet is in sleep mode, it will also trickle charge - but you have to use the main charger to get a fast charge into it - PC will only trickle charge

First of all, thanks for answering. I tried it, but when I plug in USB, Asus SL101 turns on. I won't charge turned off. It turns on automatically when I plug in USB to charge. And when its turned on plugged in on PC USB, as I explained before, it won't charge.
Somene know where I can get a working cable? Maybe an original working one? Asus SL 101 is maybe 2 or 3 years old know. Shouldnt there be still original ones left in shops? Actually it doesnt have to be an original one. A working one is fine, too. (Working means for me: USB, Charging, USB Debugging). So anyone knows good stores/internet offers (amazon, ebay...) for sl101 cables? Cause I really dont know which one is a good one.
Plug it in to USB and then turn it off, you won't see it charging, it is a very very slow process when you charge from PC (If it works the same as the TF101) - leave it overnight plugged in and turned off
Sounds like your cable is working fine, you get a data connection with USB debugging - so data side of the cable works, and you get a charge when you plug it into the charger, so power side of it is working too
It's likely drivers stopping you using the media transfer mode
eBay would probably be your best bet if you want another one
asusparts.eu sell some stuff too - fits SL101

Ya actually I didnt want to complain. The cable really works fine, but I cant root cause USB Debugging Mode is found by PC, but showing no storage icons on computer. So Root Software dont find device and no data transfer works while it is in debugging mode. Could it be because of my device? Actually it was from germany and the firmware also was DE. But for updates, I had to change it to WW code. Maybe its cause of firmware. I really dont know. Its strange cause for everyone it works, only for me it doesnt work. So original cable was to begin with not working on usb pc. So I hoped the fake one would work full. *sigh*
Thanks for the link. I searched for only the cable (on the given link) and I found it without adapter. But its a pity, Im in germany and if they send the cable to me, I have to pay 46$ for the cable. For US people its 25$ (cause they dont have to pay oversea sending costs). If its also not working, so it would be a problem.. even warranty is expensive (sending back ~20$).
Is there a way to downgrade SL101 from 4.0.3 to Firmware Version 3.2 without using USB Debugging and root?
Case closed, Watson (I always wanted to say that)
I found the error. The cable is working now and USB Debugging working, too. Root was successful. I opened device manager and deleted Asus Epad Sl101 driver and plugged sl101 in. So windows had to search for drivers and it installed the right drivers. I dont know why preinstalled ADB Drivers didnt work, but now everything works.
Thanks for your effort
Great, yea sounded like a driver problem, pleased you got it working :good:
Newbie here, sorry if this is in the wrong place.
I recently purchased a Samsung T7 SSD specifically to use as extra storage for my Note 20 Ultra. Upon unboxing, I noticed that when connecting drive to phone with supplied USB-C to USB-C cable, the drive will not power on (no lights on drive). My phone will not recognize anything is connected at all. I then connected the drive to to my computer and it instantly powers on, I quickly unplugged it and connected it to my phone and the drive lit up and connected as it should. After unplugging and waiting 10 seconds or so, and reconnecting, nothing happens, no lights, nothing. I can even connect it to the usb-c input on the media center of my vehicle to power it on and then quickly plug it up to my phone and it will work fine.
I did do a restart of my phone with the drive plugged in and upon phone reboot the device was powered up, but it still will not get any power from port upon cold connection.
Any help or tips are greatly appreciated.
Did you try to check the cable, because something similar happened to me with a pny external ssd disk and the cable was the problem

Yes, I tried several other cables with no luck. They all do the same. The cable that came with the drive works fine in with every other device I plug it into. Is there a setting that toggles power output from the phones USB-c port? It seems like the phone is not supplying enough power to the drive to start it up.
