Got a message today saying an update is available:
"TEST ONLY -- System update available 1.28.531.9 (10.35 MB) Thank you for purchasing the MyTouch 4g slide. (Internal FOTA evaluation)"
Any idea what is in the update, or what an internal FOTA evaluation is? or if this will screw up my having removed bloat and added google video chat? Anyway, here I go installing it.
I am pretty sure Its just a fix for the vital security hole caused by the sense skin 3.0. I could be wrong.

Strange. Installation failed, but I "fixed" that hole already anyway. Thanks.

It failed becuz you are rooted and no stock recovery. The cwm recovery blocks official updates for good reason. If your rooted then Who cares.

I just received the security update OTA today. No other changes, as far as I can tell.

EDIT: You can also just flash THIS by attn1 to accomplish the same goal.
The update for 1.84 for the Inspire 4G was released on 4-29-2011 as an OTA update. It WILL NOT RUN on rooted ROMs.
Things I have personally observed about this ROM:
Quick. Seems to respond very well to input, no real hesitations. I won't tell you quadrant scores because they are useless.
GPS WORKS! Exceptionally well. 3-6 FOOT accuracy. The highest TTL I have seen is 17s.
Fast. HSUPA is working well, 1.3mbps up. I hit 6mbps down on a regular basis with this ROM. YMMV, of course. But it works great here in North Texas.
Third party non market Apps install. Yes, you read that right. There is no selector to turn it on or off, though. They work for me. YMMV.
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR PHONE, COMPUTER, PLACE OF RESIDENCE, OR PETS.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prerequisites:
S-Off HTC Inspire 4G with microSD card inserted (HOW TO thanks to attn1)
RUU to stock 2.2.1 v1.80 (Located here thanks to cmstlist)
Gingerbreak v1.2 (From Chainfire) loaded on your SD Card
The OTA update note: place in /sdcard/download. This method is untested.
Sideload Wonder Machine if install of Gingerbreak does not work.
A valid Wi-Fi connection
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Follow these steps to achieve a rooted 2.2.1 v1.84 stock ROM
1. RUU your phone to stock following instructions provided in the above thread using the pd98img.zip method, NOT THE .EXE!
2. Boot phone, don't bother adding any accounts or setting anything but a wifi connection up.
3. Go to Settings, choose AT&T Software Update, then choose HTC Wi-Fi Software Update.
4. Download and install
5. Boot phone into updated stock ROM.
6. Install Gingerbreak v1.2 and run it. It will crash HTC Sense launcher, force close it, then you will see an error saying it could not reboot phone. Reboot manually using power button. If it gives you a weird error on boot such as a picture of a phone and a red mark, pull the battery then reboot.
7. ROOT! Yes, you now have root. Verify superuser.apk is in your app drawer, then I strongly recommend installing busybox from the market.
8. Install ROM Manager from the market and flash ClockworkMod Recovery. I have had no issues with 3.0.2.6.
That's it, done! I have had a couple small FC's from SU when first granting permissions to an app, to fix it open the actual superuser app then go back to the offending program. Once granted permissions this should not occur anymore.
I hope this helps!
If I missed anyone in the thanks above it was purely unintentional. PM me and I will correct the oversight.
I think you mean 3rd party apps is enabled? Not slideload.

It may not have rolled out for everyone yet. You can try placing the update file, not renamed, in /sdcard/download then run the update.

so lemme get this straight, AT&T finally enabled the ability to install apps that are not from the market?
Or am I just seeing things and mis understanding.

As I said that method is untested, try the check for updates step and see if it thinks it is a previously downloaded update that wasn't installed.

a little "birdie" told me that at&t is rolling this out to 10K users a day for the first three days, then evaluating the results and - assuming all goes well - will bump up to 25K-50K users on 5/2, and then 50K users a day until done beginning 5/3 or 5/4. don't know for sure, though, if this is why you're having to wait for 1 more day.
i have the update, where do you go to let it install non market apps? i tried downloading the amazon app store thingy but it still says install blocked.

If you downloaded the update prior going back to stock Un-rooted, then you need to either format you SD card or use another one. When I went back to stock, the update didn't show up for me, but as soon as I changed my SD card, the OTA came right up after I prompted for an update.

I wouldn't much worry about updating to this if your phone is rooted. Soon enough someone will have a rooted and CWR Flashable version of this. With so many good roms and Devs here I assume it wont be long.

I think that is the difference maker. Hence why s-off is listed as a prerequisite.

I recently rooted my Inspire. Today there was a WIFI update available and when I went to run the update the screen blacked out with an exlclamation mark. Is this because of the root that the phone will not take the update? Or is that the update process?
Thanks
Is the update from your service provider or from the people that created the ROM? If it's from your provider I would not even try to run the update just wait for an updated version of your rom to come out.
Thanks!
Kind of what I was thinking but being new to the device I thought I would ask.
Thanks again!
This is just to enable better speeds but all the ROMs already enable that.

Actually, its likely the side loading update, which most Roms also have. The speed update was weeks ago...

The OTA update is a combination of a patch pack and some new firmware for the radio and hboot. The first phase is applying the patch pack. For this to work, you need a pretty much stock ROM. If you're rooted, you likely have a few files that will be different and the patch will fail. It also checks the CID and aborts if you're not using stock (ie you used gfree to "open" your SIM, etc.). The firmware will only install after the patching process has completed successfully.
If you are rooted, then your best bet is to just use ATTN1's package that contains all the patched files and firmwares. You can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
I just received a notification of a system update available today (Oct 20, 2011).

Undead already has a patch for this. You can use his I don't think it messes with root as I have his rom. And freeze the updater using titanium backup.
That's what I did.

...and there is the primary reason to root your phone above all else.
How long has the patch been out that undeadk9 whipped up when the vulnerability was exposed?
How long did it take for HTC to figure out a way of patching it, run it through their departments and test it out...
Undeadk9 found out about the problem when someone else posted it here. The very next thing he did was sit down and hammer out the fix into a flashable zip for the rest of us. (Thanks again for caring, btw!)
Nevermind the fact that you should be able to do whatever you can make your device (yea, the one you paid for) do, but being at the mercy of some titan company to grind an update through all it's gears... no thanks.

I wanted to post this little trick I have been using for sometime on all my phones. To avoid the harrassing popups of ota updates aka system updates.
Step One: Go to backup and restore (middle icon).
Step Two: Click on edit filters and type update.
Step Three: click on update 3.0.2115xxxx and freeze it.
Also note, that the other updater is your market updater. I would not freeze that one unless you do not care about your apps being updated.
All done. This also works on other phones, the updater will have a different numberset but, it will always say Updater xxxxx.

Im not sure if it will prevent ota updates. I know however this method will block anything from getting threw and is useable on most phones. Ive tested it on most of the motorola droid phones as well as mine.

Hello people,I just check manualy from my DS for new OTA hopping that I might see the ICS OTA available.
Instead of ICS I see an OTA (downloading as we speak) that is supposed to be about-and I quote- "mail".
Has anybody received this as well?
Any idea what this might be?
I am also receiving the update, unbranded Desire S on O2 network in Germany.
Its been installing for like 10 minutes now allthough it was a small update.Do you have that problem too?

Yes, it is still installing, so I do not know what the update is good for. Mine also said it is for "mail".
I just installed it, it's finished now, but I don't see much difference when I look at the (htc) mail app. Maybe just some kind of small bugfix?
Its been over an hour and its still installing!!!!I even xhut down and restart the device and its still after all installing!!!Any ideas how to deal with this?

Sent from an HTC device soon to be replaced by Samsung. Suck on that, HTC!!
Got it. Took less than a minute to download and install (unbranded, stock, UK). Doesn't seem to do anything visible.
Same here. Everything went pretty fast over wi-fi. Branded stock ROM.
I fail to see the logic and sense why HTC are still developing fixes etc for OLD GB ROMs. They should dedicate their time towards to bloody ICS update.
Ridiculous how slow they are. No word on the update yet, and already in May...
