Market place is up and running
There's only 17 applications in the German Marketplace. That's a bit disappointing, considering they have been advertising their Marketplace among developers for half a year now.
I hope that it gets better soon.
How many are there in other countries?
There appears to be a good few apps on there - more than 17 as I look at it - maybe over 50 (im in the UK).
very few free apps - maybe 3?
I think I will wait until im sure what the situation will be with apps purchased and lost due to ROM flashing. Do you get to download again for free?
In the Netherlands only 4 apps, Microsoft Tag, My Phone, Facebook and 'De Telegraaf' (a Dutch newspaper). A bit disapointing...
Guys,
How do you get the application for it? I'm still using the stock ROM that came with my HD.
Cheers.
Well it not live until tomorrow so any apps are a bonus till then.
Yes, even 50 apps is disappointing. There's some 20-30000 apps for Windows Mobile out there and they could only get 50 of them into their Marketplace within 7 months?
Well... it's not even official yet, so let's wait a bit and see what happens.
Not working for me. The cab downloaded and installed but when trying to launch it searches for an update and informs me:
"We encountered an error while trying to reach the Windows Marketplace server. Would you like to try again?"
Have they switched it off again?
Mine installs but then it cant connect because it says the servers are unavailable. hmmmmm
It's still working here.
Could all of you please tell us what country you are in? That would help a lot.

But I don't think that suddenly tomorrow the Marketplace is full of apps. But lets wait and see!

My crystalball says otherwise .
The market place is still working for me (UK)
The imortant thing is quality not quantity. Obviously it's only just launching and WM isn't as sexy as it used to be, so it was always going to be a quieter launch than we'd hope for. However, I'd rather see an app store with 5,000 quality apps instead of one with 200,000 where there's 542 different "oh look an animated glass of beer" apps, a quarter of the apps are to cover the same OS deficiencies, with ultimately the same core 5,000 quality apps that are now so much harder to find.
That said, WM desperately needs both quality and quantity of games if it and the app store are going to make any real return to consumer level awareness. At least due to the OS's heritage we have an incredibly strong portfolio of productivity apps.
I had that same initial response but it worked when I tried second time around. Hopefully they are trying to load as many apps as possible.
Might be smart to submit an app.

As per my post header, I'm in the UK on Vodafone.
Not working
UK O2
Touch Pro
Working in Norway
But only 2 apps. Facebook and Microsoft tag reader
Still working in the UK on T-Mobile.
Just installed MS Tag and the install process is pretty slick and pain free and unobtrusive - thought it was going to launch the usual cab installation interface.
One thing though is that it didn't ask where I would like to install to, Memory or SD Card, hmmm.....
EDIT: Tag reader installed to memory - hope this isn't the case for all apps - there should be an option to set install location.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do you install Marketplace on the HD? I am on T-Mobile UK.
Thanks,
Petrov.

Looks like pretty soon the days of people copy and pasting apk's all over the place are coming to an end.
I hope this doesn't make theming harder.. We'll see.
From reading that article,
Seems like airplane mode or a firewall would crush all the hopes and dreams of google and app devs.
It seems that every time we open an app it needs to verify that it's been paid for by contacting a "licensing" server and retrieving a response.
I feel like that could slow down launch times, and being unable to use an app when offline would be like UBISOFT hell all over again.
I really hope google puts a lot of thought into this..
I wonder if this if already being done? Every time I try to play that golf game on my EVO on an airplane while the radios are off I get a FC when it starts. As soon as I an on the ground and turn the radios on the game works fine.

what if you are in an area with no signal or on a plane or something? you cant open any apps???
This is already in place in a number of apps, one is IP Cam Viewer.
I paid the money for it. I transferred all my files to my wife's Evo 4G, and thought "hell I'll see if it works..." Well it didn't. When I try to open the app, it tells me that I have to purchase it from the marketplace.
I'm all for buying apps when they're good, and I understand single user licensing. Guess I was just hoping I wouldn't have to spend double the money for all the apps I use.

I've heard of couples sharing the same email as apps get replicated on the two phone
I can confirm that they don't get replicated..
I have two evo's right now under the same email and they're definitely not replicating crap.

Now that's a problem I understand about paying for apps but not working when I'm in a place with no signal. I see a law suit brewing up. I paid for the app I should be able to use the app whenever I want to. Class action law suit coming real soon.

"A limitation of copy protection is that applications using it can be installed only on compatible devices that provide a secure internal storage environment. For example, a copy-protected application cannot be downloaded from Market to a device that provides root access"
...Seriously???
EDIT - the above quote was misrepresented in the place I copied from...research shows it to be misleading. the actual bit of Google's text is posted over on page to of this thread. disregard my indignation in this post...
This is discouraging, because a lot of people like to try the full before they buy it expecting more than what full has to offer, only to be disappointed later.

You do get a 24 hour refund option when you buy from the market so I'm not worried about trying before you buy. I do worry about not being able to play something when I'm in the bathroom at work because I don't get a signal there.
well how many ppl do actually piracy apps??? oh my bad forgot that this is Android, for a second i though it was apple!!
Just to clarify a couple of things:
There are 2 ways to use the Licensing - one is Strict - you CAN NOT USE THE APP WITHOUT ACCESS TO MARKETPLACE. Personally, screw that.
Option 2, however, is a non-strict policy. Server managed, where the license is 'cached' to storage. You also can programmatically set how long your app can be used without any license check.
That'd be the way i go

That'll be up to the developer. I like this approach, as I'd be happy to do say... a 5-7 day turn around on the license check. After 7 days with no data signal, seriously, where the hell are you? LOL
Besides, if you've used a paid app for 7 days, and by that time can't decide if you need it or not - wow.
And of course, as soon as you got signal again, the license check would go through and you can use the app again, no problem.
I'm sure there will be UbiSoft and EA style implementations though - way too damn draconian for my tastes. I don't care to know every single second that someone's using my app. I would just like to know that they haven't 'copied that floppy' as it were LOL
I have no doubts this will be defeated in time, though. All it would really take is mimicking the server license response, which can be extracted from the locally cached license of an actual paid product.
People that pirate software are going to do it, regardless. Don't make the honest people pay the price of draconian DRM.
The best approach I can make as a developer, is give my customers the features they want, in a stable, good performing package, and discourage 'casual' piracy. Beyond that, it's out of the developer's control, and honestly, any more than that usually just pisses off the customer and annoys the pirates for about a day and a half.
Ok...had to read the SDK paperwork as I really wanted to know this...my previous post was incorrect and here is the update...
From Google:
Android Market Licensing is a flexible, secure mechanism for controlling access to your applications. It effectively replaces the copy-protection mechanism offered on Android Market and gives you wider distribution potential for your applications.
A limitation of the legacy copy-protection mechanism on Android Market is that applications using it can be installed only on compatible devices that provide a secure internal storage environment. For example, an application using the copy-protection mechanism cannot be downloaded from Market to a device that provides root access, and the application cannot be installed to a device's SD card.
With Android Market licensing, you can move to a license-based model in which access is not bound to the characteristics of the host device, but to your publisher account on Android Market and the licensing policy that you define. Your application can be installed and controlled on any compatible device on any storage, including SD card.

Also...there are options for the Devs to allow for apps to be used a chosen number of times before they need to check in for licenses. Strict has to check in every time....other option allows dev to choose based on times used or time since last check in.
SO...all in all I am much less worried about this now.

With licensing the dev can choose whether an app can be accessed from different phones. It is an option...
(greeked...multiple times)
Question: Does that mean we won't be able to open, modify, and resign apks? Like...to change the appearance (make a widget clear, etc).
More like bad news for paying consumers. That's who always pays for everything. Those of us who actually buy the products.
I plan on speaking with my wallet. I wont buy any app that requires I have an internet connection.

Wait so according to google us rooted folk couldn't download copy-protected apps before now?
Urrr, i think im missing something
This is actually a nice implementation for both the software developer and the user. Most will implement this where it only has to check-in every week or two. So the odds of getting caught in a spot where there is no connection is low.
At the end of the day, it is a pretty straightforward way to handle copy protection that really shouldn't inconvenience anyone.
Also it will bring more developers to the platform if they know they don't have to worry as much about piracy.
Piracy will still run rampant. People will find ways to circumvent this, that's just how it is. At least it will curb some piracy since copying and pasting an apk file wasn't much of a deterrent.
Hi dudes!
I just bought my first Android phone - Huawei U8150 IDEOS. It has Froyo on it and it is "with Google" on the back, which by the reviews means that is with bold Android 2.2 and not with some apps from the manufacturer.
But, as this is my first phone on Google, I would like some recommendations for apps, security maybe, what to do with it, and of course some basics about the Android itself because I don't know nothing about it. Don't be angry at me for that, and I know that this is not the COOLEST phone (by coolest probably means most expensive ) but it is enough (given the money amount spent on it). BUT THANK GOD, I FINALLY BOUGHT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyways, this may be some useful informations for the newbies also, not only for the IDEOS model.
And.....also I live on the Balkan so probably some apps for US region may not work for me.
Any tip and info will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Am.....sorry if there is some other thread like this one out there, I searched and - no results, but again, I may be mistaken. So if there is something like this, please let me know and then close the thread. THANKS!
Bye!
Congrats on the purchase.
Recommend Angry Birds, Guns 'n' Glory and Pocket Legends straight off for free games. Other good apps include Mini Info, LED me know, ES File Explorer, Foursquare, Bump and 8pen. You'll find some sort of barcode scanner essential (Google Goggles, Barcode Scanner, etc) as there's no App Market available on your computer, so many developers use barcodes that link to the marketplace on your phone instead. As you'll swiftly find out, most of the best apps are free, it's just a case of finding them.
Good luck!
Great

Ahaha. I use 3G Watchdog, as it gives you notifications when you approach your limit.
The current battery percentage (rather than just a simple graphic) is accessible in the Settings -> About Phone -> Status. The number of apps on the market to display the percent as a widget probably number in the hundreds.
But since that's not too amazingly helpful, there are 3 apps I know of that try and see your usage to predict number of hours remaining on the battery: JuicePlotter, Battery Snap, and my own new one Battery Diviner, which has its own thread in this forum.
Other apps I use often:
ASTRO File Manager, by Metago
Quick Settings, by Sergej Shafarenka
Tasker, by Crafty Apps (tons of automation)
Barcode Scanner, by ZXing Team (for the QR codes you see everywhere online)
FBReader, by Geometer Plus (an e-book reader)
WeatherBug
Winamp
Dolphin Browser
Games I suggest:
Solitare, by Ken Magic (includes Solitare, Spider, FreeCell, and Forty Thieves)
Robo Defense, by Lupis Labs Software
Trap!, by Matt Wachowski
EDIT: I just noticed you seem to like 8pen. I tried it out, probably will again, but in the meantime, SwiftKey is my favorite software keyboard.

That's one cool app, swiftkey. Only one problem though that I forgot to mention, looking for free apps. Not that I wouldn't pay couple of bucks for it, but IF I had more money maybe. And I will try using it your own new one Izkata, just I must wait to go to WiFi area, as I already am near the end of the MB provided for free (300MB for the lowest cost package).
I like to do more with this Android phone, just more time to pass, to get use of it and know how the OS works.

Smart Keyboard Trial - Can't post links yet... lol
In my opinion, this is the best keyboard. I never really got good at swype, and this just lets me type so quick, and the auto correct feature is always spot on. You can change it so the long-press duration is shorter, so you don't even have to go to a second screen for punctuation and numbers, they're just alternates...
And the trial lasts forever, with a "bother" message that lasts 3 seconds that pops up like once a day.

Isn't the smart key trial better for bigger screens? I have 2.8 inch, so maybe the swiftkey or the 8pen will be better for me, but I will have to try to compare.
And are you using some apps for the camera guys? Is it going to be better to use some app because I don't have flash and it is only 3 MP?
Thanks!

Are the apps up to date? And are they free to install them, and also secure?
I saw some interesting thing there but still didn't copied to the sd card.
Another massive update. :]
Hex was originally a board game. The goal is to try and connect your two sides of the board before your opponent. The first player has the advantage so there's a "first move swap" where the second player can swap positions on their first move (it's toggle-able). The game gets pretty hard when both players know what they're doing.
The app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sam.hex
The code:
https://github.com/Xlythe/HexGame_Android
You can donate through in app purchases if you like the game and don't mind buying me a soda. And I'll try to help anyone who wants to write their own AI or make a different board game off the code. The code should be a lot cleaner than it once was.
Cool
I got a bit overexcited and pushed without doing a proper code freeze. Needless to say, bugs popped up. How do most people handle this? I assume it's one of the two:
a) Spend the week cleaning up and release a clean, solid app
b) Push updates periodically as you clean up all the known bugs (despite the likelihood that more will pop up)
I've been doing the latter, not wanting an app that's broken (especially if I have the fix for it), but I'm a bit afraid it'll annoy users with the frequent updates. I should have just forced myself to be patient and waited a week... And written tests...

Haha, yes. There's another computer, Bee, who's a lot smarter but also a lot slower. I thought the default, Will, was better for showing someone new how to play (Faster, more beatable).
It's really easy to write a new AI (a good one, though, is a bit harder). If anyone writes something good and wants it pushed to the market, I'll gladly pull the changes. No one's really shown any interest in the game (programming wise), though, and it's at a good enough state that I'd rather write a new app than tweak Hex further.
Now in the F-droid repo, the only one with NCSA license; congratulations
Maaaaassive update. It's been a while since I learned how to code for Android, and everything I've learned has been put back into the game. It's animated, fluid, and just looks amazing. There's Google+ Achievements and Net play too.
This game is driving me up the ******* wall! (which is a good sign I suppose, because it means I am obsessed with it.)
How are you supposed to swap player 1 and player 2? There's an option in settings to enable swapping, but how do you actually swap? I want to let the AI go first.
small screen problem
I can't press the left lower cell because of a small screen size. All time I press the Undo instead of the cell.
Nice :cyclops:
You cant swap who goes first right now (it was there, but got lost in the ui overhaul). I'm probably going to randomize it.
I'll add smaller buttons for smaller devices.

Dear Forum,
I need help from someone with android development experience to help me with a small issue I'm having. I'm trying to play Duke Nukem 3D on my tablet in offline mode -- since I no longer have a sim card in it, nor a home wireless connection -- but unfortunatly, without an Internet connection, the game displays a popup which prevents me from continuing my gameplay until a new connection is established. So I thought I'd just make a simple edit to the APK and remove this popup. I extracted the APK and fiddled around with the manifest and strings trying to get rid of the popup, but with no luck. Maybe someone here can explain to me how to go about this popup removal business?
Any help will be appreciated. I have been itching to play this again for quite some time, but this connection requirement is in the way.
Thank you,

i dont think we are able to help you with that, if you got a version with adds it was most likely free and if so the Ads are helping the developer make money and i think there are just legal issues with that so you cant get xda in trouble
Reply
Thing is. Duke Nukem 3D was free when I downloaded it. Then the devs began charging for it. But those of us who got it before they began charging were allowed to continue using it. We had free licences, and every time you start the app it verified that licence. But if you were not connected to the Internet, then the app could not verify the licence. Thus it would display a popup telling you to connect to the Internet in order to verify your licence. Now I can no longer play it with an internet connection, so this popup is preventing me from playing the game (Which I legally own) IMO this is very unfair. So I thought it would do no harm to simply get rid of the popup. (There are no ads)
But you're probably right. Editing the APK is probably against the EULA. I know what. Let's say that in the hypothetical instance in which I procured an open source android game, and the game showed me a popup notification everytime I lost my Internet connection. How would I go about editing that out of this (free open source) hypothetical APK? This way XDA is not assisting me with anything remotely illegal, and then it would be up to me what I choose to do with the knowledge learned.

I don't think anyone will be too upset if you edit that APK... Machineworks no longer has a license to Duke3D on Android and the app is no longer on the Play Store.
Full disclosure: I hold the license now and have an awesome version coming out later this year. Keep your eyes peeled. If you'd like, send me a message and I'll invite you into our closed beta. The beta costs a dollar (the full release will be more because it will include a lot of content) and you'll need to supply your own DUKE3D.GRP from the PC version (or play the included shareware episode), but it only requires you authenticate online once, not every startup.
There are modified ad-less APKs around the web. Search around and maybe there's one for Duke Nukem 3D.
