I wanted to start a thread for apps that people are using. Sometimes it is hard to find a good app your looking for if you dont know the name of it.
There are many apps that i have found just browsing androlib but sometimes you just dont even think of looking for a kind of app till you see it.
I know this is probably not the place for this but i am here browsing in the forum the most and some apps are releated to the Hero so here goes.

I know what it does but I have not used it yet lol. You never know when you may need an app. And since i have apps2sd why not right ? I have 640mb to fill up

There used to be a free version but now only the paid one is listed on the market.
I just buckled down and spent the whopping .99 cents and got it.
It is worth every penny if you use your lockscreen

Imdb App?

I find it surprising there's no Imdb app. Is there a reason for this? It would be really useful...

It would be really nice to have the IMDB app on my phone. It isn't too bad in the browser, but always much better to have the app.

There should be some kind of 'Devs for hire' forum.
I wish I had the ability myself. If someone gets a half decent Imdb app, even for 50p or something, they'll probably make a tidy little sum...

But then you would still be able to get the data. I once saw a friend doing it on a desktop app for his movie library. He had the scores, summary, genre, cover in 1 app. But yeah for personal use only. so It would get pulled from the market fast.

If you are a swedish user I suggest "Filmtipset" app.
It shows many nice info about films, and also the IMDB score.

Tbh, the score is the least useful item on the page, next to any adverts...
For me it's looking people up an seeing what else they've been in, maybe with pictures of them.

Iphone has had an IMDB app (which is really good btw) on their appstore for several months so I guess they don't care that much...

Quite possible, and if so, let's hope they release one for android aswell

I was going to start on it until i saw that.

The Movies app in the Market (Flixster) used to pull IMDb's info for individual movies. If you scrolled to the bottom of the movie details it linked to IMDb, but it looks like they've pulled it. It still links to Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes though.

I can remember pausing my vcr to get film credits to enter into IMDB. Now they have taken all of the data they got for free from users, studios, and artists and license it for a minimum of $15,000 per year. Nice business model, you give me yours and you can pay to see mine.

Most movie/DVD catalog software I have come across (Extreme Movie Manager, Med's, etc..) all scrape from IMDB and other sites without problems. I have owned Extreme MM for years now, and with periodic script updates there has never been a problem. I have yet to hear IMDB ever complaining or going after someone fro scraping.

[APP] Prox: Control of The Force :) A new way to command your phone...

Hello all! I had a thread but it was locked because it was a paid app. Now, there is a free one to check out. It's called Prox Lite and it has just been added to the Android market.
Prox makes use of the phone's proximity sensor and accelerometer to initiate an action. Prox figures out what orientation you are holding the phone and then activates that action when you swipe your hand across the proximity sensor. Prox Lite has 4 actions:
*Flat - Emulate home button
*Toward - Expand and contract notification panel
*Left - Launch phone dialer
*Right - Launch browser (google.com)
All you have to do is turn on the service through the app and then tilt the phone in the direction you are trying to activate the action for and then pass your hand over the proximity sensor and it will activate the action for that direction.
You can amaze your friends, and feel like a Jedi. Imagine the look on your friend's faces when you do things without even touching the phone itself. Just to ease your mind, Prox is disabled when the screen is off and when you are in a call. Normal proximity sensor usage is preserved during these situations to you don't have to worry about Prox doing things when you don't want it to

P.S. Some users are having trouble with making this work properly. If you are having issues with the left and right actions, try just a slight tilt and then a swipe. Refer to the video for an example of this. Also, different phones have different proximity sensors and some of them just happen to work better than others. Give it a try to see what you think and don't forget to leave a rating in the market. I hope you enjoy this app

This is really cool. My biggest concern right now, having only just tried it for a few minutes, is potential battery drain. If it doesn't end up being too bad, i may consider trying the full version. It would be nice to be able to hide the notification bar icon, but the full version may already have that.

Battery drain is really not all that bad. The listeners are unregistered when the screen goes off. During normal phone use during the beta a few months ago, Prox was only using around 3 - 4 % battery during a normal day. But alas, this depends entirely on how much you actually use the phone itself. If your screen is on for the better part of the day, then drain will occur. But under normal use, it really isn't that bad. Thanks for the feedback

Yeah. I was originally going to put it into the Productivity category on the market, but I think it's more of a novelty than an actual productive applications. It's just cool to show people. There are some things in the paid version that can be put to actual use though. There is a Timer mode that activates an action based on how long you cover the sensor. It could be useful in a car dock or a cradle at home.

I picked up the pro version. So far it's pretty solid. Battery drain is pretty much non-existent, maybe 2% with a lot of screen time.
Some things I would like to see:
Tasker integration (this would be the best addition by far).
A combination of the Timed and normal types so you could hold over the sensor longer for a different option.
Being able to hide the icon in notifications.
Media button options like Previous Track, Play/Pause, Next Track.
Simulating a long-press of the search button to bring up Voice Actions.
Profiles that automatically change based on what app you're in.
Thanks for making this, I've been using it a lot today, and it has already become habit. Keeps my screen cleaner, too.

Im glad that you're liking it! A lot of the things you have mentioned have already been pointed out to me and I am thinking which ones will actually be possible. Some of the things will require root access. But I have a summer job atm (10 1/2 hour days) so I am not really tinkering with it right now. When I get back into school mode, you can pretty much expect to see some if not all of this added to the pro version. I appreciate the feedback and be on the lookout to some awesome future updates

It is not currently on any other market but the Android Market. I may add it to some of the ones you have mentioned but it may be a bit before it gets there.
My portal says that it should show up as compatible for the Desire HD. I see that you are running MIUI so that may be the reason for it not showing up. Some custom ROMs and leaked builds of Android cause this and I have no reason why.

I love the camera holding thing.

trials?

sorry but I'm new to wp7. I just have a question about the apps. do the trials have like an expiry date? or are they just ad-supported, but can be use like forever? Thanks in advance!

It's completely up to the developer of the app in question how the trial version of their app behaves.
Like you say; some trials are fully functional for perhaps a number of days, and then revert to a reduced functionality mode after that (or lock up completely). Some just give you an idea of what the full app is like, but stop you using the best features in the hope that tempts you to buy the full version.
Usually trial mode isn't used with ad supported apps; they're usually 'free' forever (as the developer is getting paid each time you're shown an ad / click on an ad). To add to the mix some developers release both a paid and an ad supported version of their apps so you can choose to have the app either 'free but with ads' or 'paid with no ads'.

Then how do I know which 'type' of trial app it is? Like will the developer state it in the description box or something? I haven't got my WP7 yet actually. Getting it next week. Can't wait!

Developers don't usually describe the trial in the description box - usually you find out what the trial has just by installing it and trying it (all for free of course); it's a quick process to put it on your phone, see if you like it, and if you don't you can just hold your finger on the icon (on the start menu) and an option pops up to uninstall it. If you do like it the developer usually puts a big button in the app to let you buy the full version. With games you sometimes get to play e.g. the first level and then if you want to play more you can choose to buy it. It's a really good system that lets you buy with confidence.

oh I see. by the way. I saw that there are like Xbox games on wp7. do they have trials too? and if there is, do they all have the same 'type' of trial, e.g. have to buy the full version after 10 minutes of gameplay, or are they all different? sorry for all the questions

Not sure about xbox live games as it's not something I use. Angry Birds I think lets you play until level 21 in trial mode.

edit: just installed the app..sometimes the app makes the phone go crazy!! i have to logout fro the browser or turn off wifi for the phone to become normal.

This is without a doubt 'the best' app for controlling your phone from your browser. I've installed and played with many and this one tops the lot in my opinion.
It's clean, easy to use, great interface (both on the phone and PC).
Side note: This thread would probably be much better off in General Android Apps and Themes forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530. The app isn't specific an LG Optimus.

I'm a little hesitant to try out apps like this as well but they have nothing but good feedback on the market and a good following on both Facebook and Google+, as well as having their own website, so I was happy to give it ago.

@smackdownn Yeah I am with you on the whatsapp, this app is brilliant.
@Nucleotide & SpyderTracks Seriously? Whats the issue with privacy? Scared these devs are going to email or sms your gf while you are out? Either that or learn to hide your porn somewhere that is not your phone. I have said this before on so many occasions, when you were using a nokia/winmo/other NON android phone, they sneakily NEVER asked for permissions, but you installed apps that could pretty much do anything on your phone anyway
This app is by far the best solution I have tried in this regard, it just works and damn well too

Lol.... I get what you're saying, but I think it's a little naive... the information we hold on smartphones these days compared to "our old nokias" means security is vital. After years of dodgy torrents, malware and hacked accounts, I've learnt to take it a bit more seriously, albeit probably to the extreme

I agree. I don't have anything I would call "sensitive data" on my phone but I do have a lot of contact information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and other information which although not really sensitive, I still don't want other people to have - especially if I don't know about it. Not only that but apps can track your location, the buttons you press on your phone, numbers dialed, text messages sent, websites you visited, and the list goes on.
With that in mind I take caution when installing any app. I check for things like the amount of reviews on the market, the quality of the reviews (good vs. bad), does the developer have a website, a Facebook page with a good following, and so on.

have been using it for about 2 days and I have to say it is great...downloading files takes a very long to though
-love the SMS from desktop feature and comes very handy for different ROM users when putting files on devices

I love AirDroid!!! It helps me to transfer photos and files from my phone to my PC wirelessly. I don't need to carry my cable anywhere with me. It's a great app. Nice job!

You don't need to install on the PC. You just need to open the browser and visit web.airdroid.com to log in. Then you can manage you phone on the web. Easy, right?
