Custom boot animation troubles - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using the cool Terminator boot animation which inspired me to make one of my own. I've been working on the tractor beam power down sequence from Star Wars Episode IV and I can get it to work aside from the fact that it starts out black for about 4 seconds and then cuts off early about 3 or 4 seconds into the animation. I have no idea why, and countless Google searches yield no results. Maybe someone else would be willing to test this out and let me know if you see the same thing? I have nothing else to test with, so that's why I'm posting here. I welcome any thoughts as to why this isn't working.

i had the same problem, ok before i try and tell you whats wrong, do you have the text document? that is neccesary if not just dl 1 one here i got it off off revolverbootanimation, i used it as a template
Sent from my revolver!

Text document, as in desc.txt? Yes, that's in there. It's odd because the boot animation shows for a few seconds, so based on the reading I've done, that shows that everything's setup properly. I mean, the desc.txt file is just an edited version from another (working) boot animation, the zip was packed by 7z with no compression, and the folder structure is correct. I'm using JPGs but so do the Terminator and Galaxy Nexus boot animations (when I used PNGs, the file size shot up to around 150 MB). I don't see any visible corruption on any of the images, and I've actually gone so far as to recreate them to test - it always cuts off at the same point. So I'm just left scratching my head here.

megacoolrock, if you have time and are willing, would you mind testing this to see if it behaves the same way on your device? If you see the whole thing, then I'll try reflashing my ROM.

What part are you trying to use man? I can help out with the animation if you let me know what parts of the movie? I have them all in avi format.

Actually, so do I, that's how I ripped it to begin with. I'm using the scene in Episode IV where Obi Wan turns off the tractor beam - there's a cool shot where the power meter goes from 100% to 0% and there are LEDs on the top and bottom that alternate on and off. I had planned to use the scene from the point where he walks in to the tractor beam control room and loop the part where the power meter is sitting at 0 and the LEDs are flashing on and off.
I've already ripped it, converted the video into JPGs and created a (partially) working boot animation. Only problem is that it doesn't play the whole thing. You can download it from the link in my first post and play around with it if you want.
Also, I reflashed my ROM today (wiping data and cache - totally fresh installation) and the first thing I did was try the boot animation - same problem, so that rules pretty much points to an issue with the boot animation.

sorry for the delay, ive been trying to get ubuntu up and running on my pad today lol sure ill test it for you, downloading now

just because you asked nicely ill fix it and upload it for ya

ok first of all these are JPEG and they need to be PNG
---------- Post added at 07:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:56 PM ----------
ok, sorry dude. i dont have a converter but if you have photoshop you can do it that way

I finally managed to get this working. Not exactly sure what the actual fix was but I recreated all of the images from the source files and went from there. I might post this in the Themes & Apps section after a little more tweaking if you guys like it. Maybe I'll add a scene of the Millennium Falcon escaping the Death Star hangar bay. Any other suggestions are welcome as well.
Anyway, if you're interested, you can download a working version from here.

Splash Screen Repository (Merlin XP Added)

Hey all,
I think it would be a good idea to have a one stop shop for people to get splash screens. It's something that's easy to add to your phone when it's done up but it's not always so easy for people to make them up with all the kitchens.
any way I'll try and start it off with a splash screen I made a while back and finally got around to putting on my phone if anyone wants it.
It's a simple one, but I think it fits in great with the Wizard Mobile Theme Though
I created the first one a while ago(with nothin's background from core kitchen 4.0 as a backdrop). I still have the layered pngs so I'm sure I'll end up swapping out some different backgrounds that I create or find(and uploading the merlin pngs if anyone wants em).
Let me know if I'm posting something that's already been done.
Update: Ive added an xp themed version now. I'll leave both on here if you like the version with nothin's crossbow background better
Each zip file contains an nk.nbf file to flash with the rom upgrade utility of your choice and a cab file to install the 3rd splash(welcome) screen
Just an FYI, but the 3rd splash screen (welcomehead.96..png) should be 320x320 (your's appears to be 240x320) so that it will work properly in Landscape mode. Main graphics should be in the 240x320 area, but it won't look right if you happen to be in Landscape (keyboard open) when you reboot.

Thanks mfrazz, I didnt realize that. Ill change the third splash screen a little later tonight, and will post when I do. Feel free to post any splash screens you've made as well
Ok I padded the third splash screen so it doesn't show a black bar in landscape mode and updated the original post with it.
Does any one have any splash screens they have done or any that they would like to see?
btw....why you used my old xplore splashes without permission....:S
they are there - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=304876&highlight=xplore
my original one(3rd splash, "crossbow" was second one):
nevermind...though.

Recently, I edited the original post hoping to turn it from a question to a discussion, and in doing so I left out where I got the "crossbow" background. I got the BMP from the Core Kitchen 4.0 release, I then created a layered png out of it(only b/c they were the only 24 bit bitmaps I had on hand) for each merlin screen(only using your image as the backdrop). If you want me to remove your background as i stated originally that i planned on doing anyway when i update, i will.
My original post was to ask if we had a repository, and i had said i came up with these by adding merlin to the spash screen images included in the core kitchen. that's why the post said "Like I Said" although what i said isn't there anymore
Although, if the images where included in a kitchen to use freely, why would I need your permission to use them :|
no ouches required.... i re edited the original post to state that the background image came from the core kitchen.. why not link directly to your post with the splash screens here so others can get some use of them from here(although a link to the post is probably sufficient)/ thanks for your input to the "community"....
all right.
Ok I added a new version of the Merlin Splash Screen to my original post. This version uses a bit more color and is a little bigger but still flashes fine and looks good.
nothin i also left the version with your background attached for people who want the gray version, but I noted you in the file name of it. If you want me to remove it alltogether let me know
Here's a pic of the new version
Merlin XP
Im going to make a vista one soon too. Let me know what you think or if you have any cool splash screens feel free to post them.
Has anyone ever made an app to swap the third splash screen each time the device boots? That might be a fun tool to have

[Q][REQ] boot animation help

how can i change the boot animation
this is something like what i am looking for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701574 or like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308294
I would also be interested in this. How can I Change it, (or can I just remove it to speed up the booting process?)
Removing the boot animation doesn't help speed up boot times. It's been widely spectated, that's why there still is one, since it's pleasing to the eye while waiting for the rather long load. You can easily change the boot animation, by editing the build.prop file.
I was wondering about this too, One will it screw up my rom? I like to mess around with modding my phone but really hate the whole backup, wipe, flash thing and would like to avoid that. Also I really liked one certain boot animation from a Custom rom that I can't remember and dont seem to have on my computer. It was little colored light ribbon things crashing into an X like symbol and it looked really cool. I'm currently using Generic Ginger 4.1 and I'd like to see something different than the basic android thing when I turn my phone on.
system/media/bootanimation.zip
Need Bali or Platypus.
Use the search feature. Freedom of choice.. is what you got.
It depends on what you would like to change it to... like orange said, thats the extension to get into the file. bootanimation.zip is the entire boot animation, to replace it, simply replace it with another bootanimation.zip... There is a list of many of them if you google it. If you replace it, sometimes the screen size is a little different so you will have to change the first 2 set of numbers in desc.txt in the zip file, I've done it for the haters gonna hate boot animation.

Preview of my upcoming Boot Animation...

A taste- still working on some banding in the images after the resize, once it is fully optimized I'm going to let you guys have it (and it will be finding a home in a custom ROM near you..).

i like looks pretty cool. i want to figure out how to add boot sounds. is it as simple as adding a "oog" or similar , that would be really awesome with an electrical type sound

It's like transformer-ish metal plates sliding together with a jet-engine 'eye' spinning up in the middle..
The hard part was getting the bootloader screen no screen cap for that
Me and Sharpe are working on a nice theme for his upcoming ROM release (not spilling the beans I hope Sharpe?? ) so this is a teaser..the theme should work for all versions..this is just the boot animation for it..
Going to release this as a raw bootanimation.zip file here in the OP once I get it just right
Hey luna_c666 , any chance of sharing the bootloader screen ? . I wanna incorporate that into my next boot animation
I have the three bootsplash images but getting them in just the right position on a black background will do my head in lol.

Sure just credit me because you are right it was a bit of a pain to reconstruct with accuracy..
Good job. In the future, you might find it easier to simply create a .gif from all the .png files and put that in your initial post as opposed to a youtube video.

Yeah, this was just a test of one of many versions I made, and I made the vid for someone I am working with in development of a custom ROM, and, I also was asked to show a friend over facebook. The youtube video of my test bootanimtation booting on my own TF solved all three of these demands
Also, since it isn't the final version I didn't want to create a gif for it just yet.
Wanted to bump this, let you guys know that it's coming along, I am trying to optimize the images so they won't band so badly before I release it, but in the meantime I have a teaser of a new theme (and more to come of this theme's variants) for the TF101..I've put a good deal of time into it, so I figured I would share a glimpse or two So far I've skinned the notifications bar, buttons, quick panel and some of the random status bar icons (like micro SD, SD, and HDD icons etc.). More to come!

BrainDrain: App made by 14 year old!

Hey guys, With a the help of few on-line classes, I have been able to develop an android app called BrainDrain. It is puzzle based.
I have released the app on the Google market place, yet there are certain things I could change to make the app better.
For instance, I haven't figured out how to stop the background music when the app is sent into the background. Also I don't want to have to go through the process of making thousands of Xml's to support screens with bigger sizes, is there any short cut or some kind of easier way?
If you could please test the app, and reply back with suggestions regarding these problems, and also suggest solutions for any other problems you come across? Thank you! .
"BrainDrain" is the app's name, please search for it on Google play, I'm a new user so I don't have the permission to post links!
I've never developed android apps, but you can use a mathematical model to map out the screen for devices of all sizes. Find the proportions of each object and run it through a function which will decide where it goes based on the dimensions of the screen.
Just a theory
Hey there,
I haven't tried your app yet, but I have to say: It looks quite impressive for a 14y old kid. When I was at your age, I knew a little bit of VBA (I was able to create some simple things like MsgBoxes and InputBoxes and stuff inside of excel sheets, but nothing really fancy). I was learning some C at that time too, but I just was not able to understand pointers and so my capabilities were quite limited.
Now seeing a 14y old toying around with Java is quite impressive :good:.
If you are having trouble with screen sizes then maybe you should use density independent pixels inside your layouts (dip).
Im not quite sure if thats correct, but I believe dip works the following way.
48dip -> 36px on ldpi screens -> 48px on mdpi screens -> 72px on hdpi screens -> 96px on xhdpi screens
Using these metrics will allow your content to be scaled according to the screens pixel density.
---------- Post added at 05:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:48 PM ----------
Oh and by the way (before I forget it)
I cannot really see the point of your app needing all this permissions (for a simple puzzler I mean).
I will have to try it out later when I get some time.
I am just learning how to code little things now with buttons to add and subtract numbers. According to the tutorials i am following you can use dp instead of px, perhaps it is a variant of dip like the post above me says. It is used for multiple screen sizes to show the same percent of the screen as far as I know.
Good work making an app at age 14. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks I will be able to make something as complex as this.

Hey there cmg5461, Thanks a lot!
For someone who hasn't developed android apps, that's quiet a witty answer. That would be possible, and that's how I did it. It's a custom setting that comes in eclipse. Thanks a lot!
Hey there Isam2k, Thanks a lot!
I've added advertisements, that's why those permissions are needed, I plan to make an ad free version of the app, maybe for 1$.
You have helped a lot, I tried what you said, It has worked, but I'm still facing a problem, all phone with screen sizes between 4-5 inches are having a problem. All the images get cluttered and overlap each other. Thanks a lot!
Hey there KeylanHalfdan! Thanks a lot!
I have used dp instead of pix, and I've messed around quiet a bit, and finally I managed to edit the xml files, But I'm facing another problem that I've mentioned above! Thanks a lot, You've helped quiet a bit!
Hmm, I am not sure about the large screen size issue. I am still early on in the coding process, but if I come across anything, I will let you know.

[Q] Please help me port a lockscreen theme made for Apple to Widgetlocker

Hey everyone, this is my first post here on XDA so hopefully someone out there is kind enough to help. I recently ran into this beautiful lockscreen on Deviant Art and I've been trying to port the slider to widgetlocker. I've come close but it still seems a little off. Since I am a new member to XDA they will not allow me to post an outgoing link in my post so if you would like to get a better idea of what I am going for please PM me, hopefully I can send a link to the original work that way. I can't even post the "Preview" url image to this post which would make it a lot easier to explain of what exactly I am going for (urrgh frustrating, again...hopefully in a PM links will work). I will upload the original files (lone_by_rjd2k3-d3buggf.zip) and my wltheme.zip (lone9.wltheme.zip) that looks, to me anyways, the closest (I've had many trial an errors lol). If someone could please review my work and tell me where I am going wrong. I tried messing with the pixels and image sizes for the slider to make it look more like the preview on Deviant Art but it's just not there yet. It's close but I would like a second opinion and/or if someone could be so kind to fix my issue and tell me what exactly I had to do fix it myself. Basically a crash course in widgetlocker theme pixels and allignments lol. I thank you so much in advance to whoever picks this up.
Also, I wasn't sure where to post this so I hope I am doing this right and don't piss anybody off. I couldn't find a "Widgetlocker Help" thread anywhere on here so I thought I'd just post it as a question. If I did this incorrectly please point me into the right direction. Thanks!
