Okay so I had a G2x and tried rooting it and I think i did something wrong. With all these instructions ramble on about one thing and another hard for me to really understand all the correct steps.
So can I please have someone give me a hand with this? As in a step by step process of everything? This is my second G2X brand new from T-Mobile has the Gingerbread 2.3.3. So if anyone can actually tell me step by step and what files I am going to need so I don't brick this one because 300USD is getting expensive.
u payed for ur replacement? lol
use the one click flash nvidia tool, to flash the clockworkmod, you dont evne have to root it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG08Uc8pQT0
yeah I had to pay for a second one. GRRR T-Mo actually checks their phones with sprint if I bricked or something just dip it in water and send it in. They would never check to see if you rooted it. So anyways do I install Clockwork or only do the steps in the video with the nv flasher?
And whats the best rom? I really like the looks of MIUI sorta looks like my wifes iPhone.
i think you screwed yourself on this one... this phone is like virtually unbrickable, nvflash should be able to bring you out of any soft bricks you might run into and ive run into a fair share of them and never had a problem...
i would recommend you sift though the development section and read all of the tutorials and have a very good understanding of what you are doing instead of having someone spoonfeed you everything when you really dont know what you are doing... (im a high school math teacher and cannot stand it when students are just spoonfed information because in the end they really dont understand what they are doing)
start here though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Yeah, what he said. maybe you shouldn't be messing with your phone if you don't understand the implications.

Best thing I've ever read. It helps shine a light on why so many people almost daily are asking for help on how to do something when this forum is riddled with tutorials. I personally stopped helping months ago with any questions on how to root or flash or just anything that there are tutorials for. It just gets crazy redundant.

Then why even post in here? Don't be a ****. Even more frustrating than people who can't use a search feature are people too uptight and high-strung to help someone. Yeah, maybe the OP could have found the answer himself. But he's obviously been following a tutorial (likely in this very forum) that's not working for him (hence his replacement phone). The guy just needs two seconds of help from someone. In the amount of time it took me to copy/paste the following links, I could have torn him a new one thirty times over. But I'm not a ****. So, if you absolutely HAVE to post here, at least make it constructive. Incessant *****ing does no good for anyone.
To the OP:
Firstly, you'll need to flash CWM. This is super simple, given you're on a PC. If you're on Mac, things will get tricky (i.e. virtual Linux environment, headaches, etc).
Next, you can find an easy to follow rooting method here. It even has an unroot .zip option given you have to send your phone in again (will save you another $300 ).
And of course, you can PM me if you need any help. If these are the steps you have already followed, here's a YouTube video with some visuals. When I'm stuck on something, that usually helps me a lot.

Good luck!
Uhhhh... i really dont understand how i was being a ****... I simply stated that he should have a holistic understanding of what hes doing before he starts tinkering because the figure it out as you go method can lead to a 300 dollar paper weight. Not to mention I pointed him in the right direction to start....
All I did was give a bit of advice that I felt was in his best interest and then sent him on his way...
If you think what I originally posted was flaming then you clearly have never seen me tear somebody a new one lol
Dont worry man

They are being difficult. What they realize is that the OP has already stated that he's bricked one device because he cannot follow directions. He obviously does not know what he's doing, and has problems following instructions because, as he put it..they go on and on... In the end even if he successfully roots his phone, he may wind up causing himself problems by having access to system files because it's obvious he doesn't really know what he's doing. Everyone shouldn't root. If you cannot follow the simple instructions to root without "bricking" a device, and you cannot follow simple instructions to bring the device back to an operational state, then perhaps rooting is not for you (OP). It just sounds like he is going to cause himself even more problems.

^^this... root access to phones is not a hand out, it has to be earned, and you earn it by educating yourself about your device and its capabilities and by following simple instructions...

I can't believe no one has said this yet.
Most phones have water sensors, so dipping it in water would just void the warranty. Sorry if you were joking. But as many have said, it's pretty easy to flash the phone back to normal so the TMobile doesn't know it's been hacked. Did you ask here first?
I am thankful for all the responses. Sorry if I caused grief and headache to anyone. I was finally able to get my phone rooted giving the information that someone provided to me on here. I sent him a PM to personally thank him.
By all means I should probably be *****ed at if I don't follow instructions very well. I have always considered myself a visual learner. If I don't have hands on and able to see it done, it really complicates things for me. I guess you can call it a disability.
Anyways I have come from a long line to HTC which I can say is way different in rooting then these phones. I root them to begin with to get rid of all the stupid software T-Mobile places in my phone and to normally switch to CM7 which I have found out is giving me problems which I am currently trying to figure out.
So please negative comments and put downs are always accepted it comes with the questions. But I don't want to sound like an ass or anything when I say this because I mean it in the upmost respect to everyone, but isn't this a forum? A community forum?
Someone once had to show you, all I did was ask for the same help. And this whole GSM network ways of doing things is different from my typical Sprint CDMA network that I am used to. Everything was pretty much the same when it came to that.
Again please I AM VERY SORRY truly if I caused any problems. Please don't be upset at me. Thanks.
I don't think anyone is upset with you. We're all here to contribute and help. Have fun with your rooted G2X

Don't feel bad. I bricked mine upgrading to GB, and I'm still not sure what went wrong. I got it fixed for free by sending it into LG.

Do not sweat the whiners. Here is the way I look at it... It is a forum for developers. I can not develop crap, so I try to do my part by being helpful when I can. Everyone here was brand new at one point. Make sure you do your part by reading as much as you can. If you still have questions/issues, send me a PM.
Why does every noob question get followed up with a bunch bullshizz. We were all noobs at one point, I remember when my Huawei ascend scared me. Nothing is worse than bricking your phone and being upset than a bunch of know it all asses being pricks. Is the g2x forum the only one full of d-ckheads? I've never heard so much whining and holier than thou bs. I'm surprised we have any devs, ungrateful bunch of *****es. Wah, nvidia never, wah, everyone else has ics, wah, that noob asked a question, wah, I suck. I love my g2x, it's a typical musclecar, way over powered and finicky as hell. The g2x is not a beginners device, this is for big boys and girls. I wonder what the whiners would do if they owned a ferrari? Newsflash, they break down, a lot! I remember when xda was where you went for help and support, now I come here to be entertained by the ignorance of the know it alls. Go ahead, blast me, I'm a writer for an Android website and I'll make it painful. OK, then, how bout all these new roms and updates? It's like the g2x is reborn. Hey, wait a minute, I thought the g2x was a useless, unsupported piece of ka ka? Frickin morons!

Well first I am glad you were able to fix the phone however I understand knowledgeable people get frustrated because this phone is simple to root. With a phone that has been out this long there is no reason anyone can not find out what to do on there own.
There are so many YouTube videos and forums like this. You are not the second person to too your phone or to brick it so why create a new post looking for help when you can simply Google it. I know your lazy and expect someone else to do your work for you.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...9l19l0l3l3l0l1535l5020l1.0.3.0.2.2.1.0.1l10l0
See plenty of info on the subject I am sure one of these other people have been helped.
This is why devs are tired of these questions they have been answered over and over. You may find this mean to say but you most likely found this forum by using Google so use it to fix your phone. Stop wasting peoples time by being lazy and use your head.

The problem is this. Ppl dont know how to research their issue. Also ppl in our generation cant seem to follow directions worth ****. I was the same way. I learned on my g1. Rooted it successful and then bricked my friends. Over the years ive learned alot about computers/phone/cdma flashing. Playing with the big boys. You develop problem solving skills that you can apply outside of this. It truly makes you smarter. So yea. Maybe we are know it all asses.

Either come back with the HD or move on to the Galaxy Note. I'm leaning towards the Note. GL, HF.
total noob and i need help.... here is my problem... I unlocked my new infuse and then rooted the phone. everything was fine fo several hours and all of the sudden it started vibrating and would reset with out turning all the way off. the android drop screen does not function. everytime you try to pull it down it starts the above issue. if a text comes thru it does it again. i did a factory reset and this didnt help. i still have superuser on the phone but cant seem to get phone to function it has power and works to an extent. you can tap apps and go thru most of the phone but it will reset and go back to main screen and vibrate and start process all over.... any ideas. i am a noob and not very technical, prob why my phone is f'ed up right now. using my samsung captivate for now. please help the new guy. i looked for threads with similar issues but found nothing with search bar. thanks ahead of time
I'm not familiar with unlocking...i do know if I'm not mistake you have to root first then unlock....but that should not effect your phone...but phones are so different....even though we all have the same model....
I would reload stock and re root....then re unlock....ate you runnning stock or custom rom?

Why yes glad you asked...check my signature...for the iset page....
You will find a **** ton of info....since your somewhat new...do a lil reading....ok ....do a lot...
Look for the one click methods by qkster....although the new odin links are great also....your choice....
And any questions the op for those threads can provide you with great help and you can pm me also...
And don't forget to thank the op dev that provided you with what you need...kk
In that case I like to suggest you to unbrick the cellphone (restore again to FROYO) and test the cellphone... If you do it, you will loose the root, however the unlock will remains
You can re-root the cellphone later... the issue could be also being caused by an app that you had installed
*** If your cellphone is from AT&T you can use the GTG's Ultimate Unbrick tool, to go back to FROYO
Remember that you must have ODIN to unbrick the cellphone..

If you can not figure out how to go back to stock, then i know mobiletechvideos. They got my old infuse running again when the usb port got borked. If you need a link ask me, idk were the link is lol. Trust me though, it worked well. Only thing is it costs money. Better off to learn how to do it unless if hardware is actually broken, not software.
Btw you may want to learn how to unbrick and learn your basics before you attempt at doing something like this again. Just making a very logical suggestion.
For sure check out the Odin videos... I have a feeling that they are going to come in handy a few times..
Everyone has to start somewhere and we all had to learn, I was really overwhelmed when I first started looking into it, but then it was like "oh! That's it?"
Most people here are super helpful (I'm not... I'm a n00b) but don't be mailing your phones to someone you don't know or anything like that... you're begging for someone to rob ya..
Just take it slow and read, read, read... when you have read enough to have a handle on it.. read some more!

Awesome brother!
Welcome to the addiction!
It is so interesting to me what can be done with minor and major changes how simple things make HUGE differences.
Next thing you know, you will be grinding out apktool changes and making themes!
I need to make an apology. Another dev had to do this earlier and now it is my turn.
He was right. We are all a bit angry at people who are posting unnecessary things, but that is no excuse to be rude. I still maintain that this forum has one of the best communities, and I will not let anyone tell me otherwise. I started on this forum in april of this year. That is 4 months ago. Look what I have accomplished. I am nowhere near the level of some of our other devs, but I am so much better than I was then. I WAS a N00B. I was that person with a million questions.
I remember the first time I soft bricked. It was late at night and all of a sudden that beautiful boot animation that I just realized cold be changed started repeating itself after I tried to flash an update to scv5. I panicked. I opened up the lifehacker article on unbricking, posted a new thread with a stupid question, and I started to realize I had no money to buy a new phone. Bottom line is it was the end of the world for me.
But, thanks to all the wonderful people here, i got it fixed. My heartbeat was probably 200 while the fxz flashed, but I got it done
I now bootloop every other day practically. restoring is no problem. ICS was a whole different story, but that is not for here. That is when I had my first hardbrick. but once again thanks to the help of others I am now on scv7 with some mods to it.
To all of you who have posted stupid unnecessary things, and yes there are many I am sorry. as the Moderator Moscow Desire said in a PM after me posting a rude response that lead to me writing this "n00bs will always be at XDA. This is a fact of life. Yes, they post stupid things sometimes, and yes, they will always NEVER do a search or read other posts. It's always been like this. And yes, it gets frustrating at times."
We know you are out their. and we can try to stop it, but there will be people who do dumb things. But that is not an excuse for any of us to be rude to them. Those of us who are more knowledgeable about dev stuff should be helping those who aren't. My mom always told me in school that there will always be bosses you hate just like your teachers, and coworkers you hate st like your classmates, so you might as well learn to get along with them. She was right. we just need to get along. For us devs there is an IRC channel, and believe me we talk about this stuff, but we all get along well. so for the rest of us t needs to be the same.
Let me start this by saying i am still a N00B, saying that Initially i was also annoyed with all those questions people were asking.. i myself started a new thread trying to clear few basic questions.. but as the time went by realised that the senior community was more harsh than anything else.. the more we teach the more we learn thats what say in my part of the world.. but i believe all is well, all that is needed is that you guys get into serious ICS development once the OTA arrives.. and <3 you guys..

Yeah, but on the other side of the coin, if you are on XDA that means you are looking to experiment, you want to try new things, you need a fast and functional ROM or that mod you like so much or simply want to root it and then there are few who are here just to learn.
But for all this you gotta have few attributes
1. Guts
2. Little knowledge
3. Able to go through few threads before starting anything
4. And last but most important, knowing where the search button is.
This still a n00b saying this, dont get me wrong. I am here to learn, i am getting into it slowly but surely. Thanks to the devs.
Ps: this post os taken better in lighter vein!!!
Speak only when it improves on your silence.
I think it is a huge deal to see a post like this. Kudos to you, Ikrasner! You have been much help to everyone, along with the rest of the devs. Thank you all for your time!

We ask stupid questions coz we are scared that the beloved fone will brick...we want to be 10 times sure that flashing will not render it useless...but still we do it ..coz everybody loves a kick!!!! I guess.. my take on this....

Well it is really not patients that is the problem that we are all having at the moment. It is the fact that everyone now seems to think they are the ONLY one with a certain problem with x, and rather than posting in the thread that deals with x they make a new thread, and then when you ask why they did not search it is always "I searched, and none of the threads deal with MY exact issue".
The issue with this is that is shows a lack of respect for everyone in here, that might be working on an issue, and that person just bumped another thread that might have that or a similar issue in it, and now everyone is reading that new glowing orange thread on the board.
The next issue is that people have to trust us.
Next, it seems we have a new rash of noobs that don't want to listen and then still post a new thread when their issues is not solved in another thread and then keep bumping that thread if no one replies.
Again these are all thing that show alot of issues and lack of respect to your dev team, we are here to help, but the more you guys all help us, the more we can help you.
P.S. I had to post this same thread a few weeks back, because of all the frustrations as well.... see a pattern here.
I know what you mean, its like you cant even blink in this forum, without starting a witch hunt.
I just joined XDA not long ago and I too have noticed a lot of pointless threads. I admit I did post a stupid question before, but I found the answer myself and went back and changed my question. But I did not go and make a new thread about it. I think the issue is A. people are lazy in general, and B. There is so much to try and wrap your head around, and no one wants to brick their device. I only have 1 device and I would love to try experimenting with different ROMs and things, because I am constantly wanting a new phone. I have had the A2 for about 9 months now and I am bored with it. But I have that fear of bricking it and then I am screwed. So for now I will continue to search through different threads and try to learn as much as I possible can before I jump in and try flashing ROMs. I notice some people just try flashing ROMs without really any knowledge then post new threads with the issues that they have. If they would just take the time to read through threads prior to jumping in there would be less of this issue. I just want to Thank all the Devs here that put so much time into all the work they do here!! Definitely the best mobile dev community out there!!

I know, it was amusing. But the fact that you're feeling the urge for clarification makes me second guess that was a "joke". (I'm kidding)
That's what we need more of here, people with a sense of humor. I applaud you for that, hopefully the lighthearted approach will carry through with the other "business class" folk.
I sit in the back of the bus, that one being driven straight to hell, if you know what I mean...

im not gonna lie me myself often sleep next to/on it but damn...
maybe if it was a sgs3
Okay, so i've managed to create a rooted rom that I was happy to do. I stayed up all night and up until now figuring out what i had to do. I need just one more thing, A EFFIN' CONVERTER OR A REPACKER THAT WORKS!!! okay so i opened my system.img using sgs2ext4 and edited what i had to so that things can work. Ive been mainly up because i cant find a re-packer that actually works for windows. i know most are gonna say linux, but, i did that with a live image boot and it was painful as hell. looooonnnnnnng boot up, system lags and freezes, and im on a macbook with bootcamp windows and a small ssd. I just need something for windows to do what i need done. ive tried so many within the past 7 hours. much appreciation for anyone who may help.
And please if you are gonna be a smart a$$ and reply idiotically over typos, irrelevant answers,etc... please dont bother.
i am doing this for myself and the community to contribute something that since rev2 has hit our device, only one other has been doing for us, partcyborg. he deserves a break and so here i am.
thank you
repacker
https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/tool-auto-tool-unpack-repack-rom-t3278393/page2 have you tried this one?
Edited....
Thanks ijoxer It's almost complete and I will test out Rom before release. Thanks

Listen man, I'm not a mod so feel free to tell me to go kick rocks, but I'm just gonna lay it out for you. I think I can speak for everyone when I say, you don't always have to be so confrontational with your post, and it seems to be every single one of them (take a look through and tell me it isn't to the point of ridiculous). Nobody here is out to get you, and I know XDA isn't as user friendly as it once was, but the majority og users here will be grateful for any and all contributions, because it's what we're here for, to find and test custom projects that we can freely tweak and mod ourselves. You're almost always going to have at least one smartass taking a jab at you, thats life, and you have to learn to roll with the punches instead of making it a big deal. How you worded your post is far more likely to attract asshole comments (and this isn't meant to be one either) than any other, simply because you're making yourself an easy target for those looking to stir some **** up. You basically held up a sign that said, "I dare you to piss me off, just go ahead and try" and you know damn well someone will.
All that aside, I'm excited to see what you've come up with, I've been anxious to do something custom myself, mainly for personal use (unless it seems stable and different enough to release). I am genuinly thankful to have someone else trying to put up some development for our device, as it's been lacking now with all the consistent updates (@Jrkruse, I'm looking at you) So, shoot me a pm when you release it, or quote me if you don't mind, and please don't take any of that personally, just don't want to see another flame war start flooding your thread before you even get anything released. Just ignore the haters, and I used to be a grammar Nazi myself, but honestly, don't pay attention to those making fun for incorrect grammar, English isn't a lot of peoples first language anymore, and even for those it is, we've all had those moments.
Take care man, hope the development is coming along smooth for you! :good:

Haha yeah man no offense taken..... I was just about to edit the post because I found DD and it's about time. Of course I post combat mode haha. It's not exact my right and like I said, I was just about to edit it.
So I'm building the blocks for my ext4 and hopefully soon it will be ready. Partcyborg has been helping me a bunch lately, so much appreciation and credit goes to him. I'm just trying to create a stable rom that's rooted. Hopefully once I get this one down, I can get something else in the works. I have and idea that will probably lighten me up a bit more haha. I apologize ONCE AGAIN. Haha. Yeah most times I'm in that mode, but, when it goes off, no one wants to bother me cause really I am asshole. Don mean to troll or troll my own threads. You had me laughing as soon as I read the post though. Stay tuned and hopefully soon more to come if I can get this damn thing correct.
Word of advice guys, no sleep, computer vision all night= one frumpy son of a ......
Sleep early, stay off your computer= happy guy.

Well, glad it made you laugh, and definitely no need to apologize, I just know I can be an easy target when I'm in asshole mode myself. And like you, it'd probably be less frequent if I didn't stay up all night coding or reading, I'm on about 70 hrs straight right now (remember to get up frequently and get that blood moving fellow geek insomniacs ?), but hey, I'll sleep when I'm dead, because I'm here for a good time, not a long time.
But again, excited to see what ya came up with, and shout out to @partcyborg for being helpful and making his awesome roms, aaand getting v2 bootloaders running root, looks like we have a clear MVP for this device moving forward. I'll probably try getting in a few Zs, and then going to tinker with my N/O hybrid I just started phasing together.
Happy New Years ladies and gents, another night to to stay up and not even feel bad about it lol, maybe I can make some decent progress before the dreaded 9-5 is back to running my life. ???

Bro really? 70hours! Damn I'd be wigging out on everybody. Must be some good meth there buddy hahaha. 9-5? I lost my job cause I stayed up every night so far haha. Oh well, I just wanted to get something out before next week cause I won't be in front of anything that communicates with the world for a year or 2. Jail is where I'll get my sleep haha. Hopefully it doesn't go that way, but, if it does, Tuesday I won't be available and by the time I get out partcyborg will already have had this phone bootloader unlocked with Roms galore and probably will ha e moved to the n3xt best device haha. I just want a to contribute something before I leave,so, I kinda feel pressured. It's not anyone's business but I'm upfront and at least I tell the truth. So to be honest that's sort of f2f he reason why I been stressed lately and act like an asshole. At least one thing done positively, satisfaction in myself that I can say hey, even if it wasn't huge, I did my small part . Know what I mean? And yes I agree with Partcyborg being the MVP of this thread. He has been the only one to remain here and provide things for us when all others seemed to have abandoned us. Dude is extremely helpf and hasn't lost it on me yet for blowing the he'll out of his inbox haha. And yes jrkruse where you At? Hazmat where you At? Hazmat was the first on these s8+ threads I kept up with. He left after almost completing his of a update root, I finished it off and haven't seen him post or nothing ever since. The 3 greats in my eyes and onlyh one is still standing with us. Ok now I gotta figure out my block size and compile to ext4. I'm here typing a novel haha
well, dont know whats going on but when i build the blocks and count my linux freezes and does absolutely nothing. any pointers greatly appreciated

I tried to pm you all day but xda says your account was deleted. I was stuck in travel hell for like 20h yesterday dealing with crap airlines at the holidays
Yea, great meth, but yours must be better with that short novel? ?
Now it says you've deleted your profile, tried messaging you back bud, sorry, had to get some sleep. Hope you don't go to jail, I couldn't do time myself, my anxiety would kill me.
Anyway, hope to see you back soon, and hopefully you made some progress.
