Hi All,
playing with custom ROM's and flashing and learning it all slowly.
See plenty of posts about different Radio versions and HBOOT's but cant really see anything explaining the point of them?
What would I gain by changing my radio version or hboot version?
Thanks
Hboot or more over "Bootloader".
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Glossary#Bootloader
Radio.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Glossary#Radio
Upgrading your radio may improve your mobiles signal, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Simply, your phone may be able to hold a more stable connection to towers by contacting them more often, WiFi may not drain as much power when in use, while also having a stronger reception. Each radio just contains minor improvements that the engineers at HTC have been able to tweak to ensure your device performs more efficiently.
Just upgraded my Radio to the latest version after reading that.
Doesn't sound like I'd gain much from a bootloader upgrade so not going to bother with that one
Cheers!

Good call, it's worth knowing that even though radio upgrades can be benefitical to signal reception and battery life (of cause they could also have exactly the opposite effect) if they go wrong they can brick your device!
So it's always worth checking the m5dsum for any files that you download once they're on your device just before you flash them to ensure that no file corruption has occurred during file transfers.
It's not worth upgrading HBOOT to the 2.xx.xxxx until the current customs ROMS are written to take specific advantage of it.

OFF TOPIC
I have been thinking about this for awhile, I've got to do some research but I'm not sure but I've got a feeling the newer hboot may be sort of bonus for the more recent radios, I won't explain why because all the thoughts I have are hypothetical, but it has to do with the phone communicating to the radio. As I was actually able to "lock" my radio through a ROM the other night, which resulted in a lot of thinking on a solution to the problem ;-).
Problem was solved in the end, but I doubt anyone else will ever come across this problem.

I've got to do some testing .. which unfortunately is rather time consuming, so I'll probably be able to post some results and more information next week . Chances are though its a one off thing that will never happen again ;-).
Can you please also explain how to check the md5sum for any file / ROM ,etc ?
Sorry for the noob question ...
Thank you in advance !

Download a md5 checker or go into 4ext recovery, select option for md5 generator or something like that
First off, think how to help yourself google is our friend.
most free file manager apps (astro etc) on your device should show the m5dsum of files on the device under properties

chill dude .. it's just that i m new to all this .. & since most of the ROM thread's don't allow posting for users with less than 10 posts ... these are the threads where i can clarify lil doubts I have , especially from lots of senior members here!
If google is the answer to all solutions , the OP could have also searched the same thing on google / xda-forums ...
Thank u for the answer anyways ...

The Op created a thread for a specific question that was answered by several people including me.
You high jacked the thread and asked off topic questions which I also answered to a point, where I felt that google search would assist you. I also provided you with answer to your final question so really no need for the chill line.
If you have any question no matter how trivial or small don't worry about opening a new thread in the Q/A section of this forum add that is what it is designed for, you then have every right to go in any direction and ask any Queston you need.

Hi-jacked , Off Topic ?
I thought my question was in continuation to the discussion of flashing a hboot / radio .... especially after the precautions mentioned by you on checking md5.

Been trying to get used to flashing from SD card but can't seem to find a Stock ROM that is suitable. They all seem to come as exe files. I found a good list of reconstructed 6.0 ROMs but can't find any 6.1 ones.
Does this mean everyone flashes to Stock via USB first? Or am I missing something ?
I would like to know this too!
I pulled the nbh from the exe on at&ts website but when I tried flashing from my sd card it only changed my spl and radio back to stock but not the rom.
try to unrar .exe file with winrar

Thanks. Look like what I was after. Will give it a try next time .
I think almost all cooks have their own stripped 6.1 ROMs. I have one in my thread, and I think zelendel posted one in TPC's thread.
I posted these before.. but here it is again.
Below is the same is the one linked on the other post above. I just named it with correct version number.
Kaiser HTC ASIA HK WWE 3 34 721 2 no radio
RUU Kaiser CINGULAR WWE 3 57 502 2 no radio

Thanks for those . Any particular difference between the two versions? Is the Cingular one onlt for AT&T maybe? I have a UK Orange Tytnii.
Just thought maybe I shouldn't be keeping recommended radio when I reflash ROM? Is it best to reflash original radio first too or doesn't it make any difference?

Damned if I can see anything in your ROM thread or in TPC's lol. I've also tried every search term I can think of.
All I can think is people who bother to do the recommeneded flashing back to stock must be using usb.
Anyways I have a couple now so next time here goes .........
Thank you.

No I'm not. Maybe I am going blind but all I see is your link to the AT&T stripped rom but I'm looking for HTC - as I said I've got a UK Orange TytnII which from what I've read says it should be flashed with HTC stock. Or maybe you are saying it doesn't matter which stock rom? And there is definitely no mention of stripped rom on TCP's page - I know that by heart now lol.
Anyway I have 2 now so I will have a go next time. Thanks again.

How dare you jump in here with that attack. I really object to this. Where have I been impolite? Have you read my OP?
For the record I not only read the instructions. I devour them! Then I learnt them parrot fashion before I began. I have been a lurker round here for years but only started flashing last week. And for the last several weeks I have been trawling through literally thousands of posts to be sure of getting it right.
Now please show me on those instruction pages where it tells you how you can find a stock HTC ROM without radio that can be flashed from an SD card!
ai6908 kindly referred me to his page where there is only a link to a stripped AT&T stock rom and to TCP's page where there is no mention either. I was also asking if it was necessary to reflash the same radio every time as none of the instructions mention if you have the radio you need already. Still not had an answer on this so maybe it's just a stupid question - just wish I knew the answer lol.
Thankfully more helpful souls than you have provided me with the file I need. Thanks again F1ip and Pisca.
Some of you people on here can be arrogant so and so's. I belong to many forums and have never come across anything like it. Look at all the space you wasted flaming me and now me having to defend myself! No wonder the kids on here post the way they do if this is the example they get set by senior members. I would wager well over half the posts on this forum are pointless flaming. And just ask yourself how many questions are really new and have not already been answered by someone somewhere here. And look how much space would have been saved if you hadn't butted in here on your high horse without reading my question properly .
Rant over.

Stock ROM is the same, it doesnt matter much for it being HTC or AT&T. Base ROM is the same on both of them.
Actually in my opinion, you dont even need to flash to stock ROM. I never flash stock ROM when I flash, and I flash about 10 times a day sometimes.
Sometimes occational hard reset might help. So in my opinion, just flash to any ROM, and do a hard reset after flash and when it prompts for screen alignment. That should solve all your flash issues.

Interesting, thanks. Certainly would save time not having to go through the whole rigmarole every time. That's one of the main reasons I was asking about the cut-down roms. As least I wouldn't have to keep doing the radio as well. Now whether with my lack of experience I should be going against what the 6.5 chefs seem to all be advising ....... .
On the other hand I may never flash again since TCP's latest seems to tick all my boxes. But having summoned up the courage to get going in the first place and it opens up a whole new lease of life for your phone, you kinda get a bit hooked. So maybe when I find one where MotoHome runs fast and smooth on my old Kaiser ........

Apologies accepted . As you might be abe able to tell, the flaming that goes on verywhere around here really gets to me and you certainly hit a nerve. I sometimes wonder if I've wandered onto some Fight Club site by mistake lol .
Yes I do know the exe files can be uncompressed but the radio is still in the nbh file - and one guy who tried using the nbz file on its own said it flashed the radio part ok but not the rom itself .
What I will do is delve a little more into what makes up the unzipped nbh file. Might be a good way to start getting into this kitchen stuff .
Hi all! i wanted to start a FAQ thread because im sick of seeing/reading threads like "what is best custom ROM? please help", "need OC help, please help!" and other very useless threads. i come acrcoss these kind of threads almost every day :/ thats why i want to make this thread to minimize the amount of useless threads
red = question color
green = answer color
@please make this thread sticky so it will always remain at the top
FAQ
1.) what ROM is best/stable/battery saver/fastest?
this is the MOST asked question of all time and short answer is: test every available ROM! everybody has their opinion and it is just stupid to make this kind of thread because most likely it is going to end up like this:
user24 says: InDroid is the best use that!
user25 says: lestatious is the best use that!
user26 says: no use kyrillos, its the best!
so DONT post threads like that!
2.) best filesystems to use?
most of the people say its:
stl6 ext4
stl7 ext4
stl8 ext2
3.) what is the best stock ROM?
almost everybody recommends JPM
4.) is there going to be official 2.3?
most likely NO!
5.) im from another SG forum and id like to flash SG3 ROM, can i do it? we have very similar specs
you can do it but it wont work!
6.) OMG, help me, kies wont recognize my phone and i cant revert back to official firmware!
Kies wont recognize your phone if its rooted, if you have flashed a custom ROM or if you have flashed unofficial samsung ROM!, so you need to find out what is the official firmware in your country then find that firmware on www.samfirmware.com and flash it via odin
7.) is it dangerous to flash a custom ROM?
Most likely no but remember you are flashing on your own and the risks are still there no matter what
8.) How to root android 2.2 FROYO?
use super1clickRoot, z4root wont work on 2.2!
9.) how do i know if my phone is hard bricked?
you CANT enter recovery, download (using 3 button (power+vol down+home button)) or boot the phone
10.) my phone CAN enter download mode but cant boot, is it soft brick?
yes it is! just flash another ROM and everything should be ok
ill add more FAQ´s later but now i got other things to do oh and also you can suggest different kind of questions and answers you want me to add
also tell me what you think of this thread
ill add links here
- www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i5800.htm for official and un official firmwares
- http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i5800_galaxy_3-3395.php full SG3 specs

4.) is there going to be official 2.3?

but is still to be confirmed by other users ^^
anyway I don't understand why people get so mad because of such threads, if you hate them, just ignore them. no one forces you to read or even answer

not all new roms last long you know..
I'm sure after the rom tutorial was out many new roms came up but lasted for less time..(no specific names please!)
So it wont matter much..
But if a new rom was really awesome and worth the entry in the poll haree could add a option(maybe) or could restart the poll with new option(definitely, this can be done by a mod)

Two solutions:
1) Don't hold the phone in landscape as problem is much worse when held like this..
2) Achieve S-OFF and install a custom ROM which should have a software fix.
If you need to know what S-OFF then you probably are S-ON. To see how to get S-OFF then use search within forum and google.
Look at other posts before creating a new thread......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036357
i did a research on s-off but could'nt find any topic to show how to s-off the HTC Desire S.

No idea, I'm afraid. I'd also recommend that you don't ask that question in the thread as it will simply annoy the developers who are working on the solution as fast as they can.
It has been shown to work on the Desire S already, but isn't yet released. It's released for other devices which shows that its not vapour ware and is worth waiting for.
and yes I'd suggest waiting a fortnight to a month at least....before contemplating XTC

take it easy, u might hurt ur self
ok its not quite in the right place, but no need to bite his head off.
anyway, in answer to your question, the way i removed the branding from my vodafone DS was this
http://revolutionary.io/ download this tool and follow its instructions, this will root your phone and give you a recovery tool that will allow you to flash a new ROM onto your phone.
With the phone rooted, you will be able to back up your data using an app from the market. Titanium Backup is the usual favorite.
EDIT : may be wrong about it providing root, I personally skipped the backup step as I had no data to lose, but if that is the case there are guides in the forums for obtaining root access
next look through this forum to find a ROM that suits your needs, from the sound of things you want the stock one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230029 should suit you.
download the zip file and transfer it to your SD card.
next you need to reboot into your recovery mode by turning the phone off, then hold the vol down button and power button together and selecting recovery from the menu
finally use the volume buttons to select install zip from SD card, and point it at your downloaded rom. it may take a few mins so allow it to finish then select reboot phone.
again this first boot may take a little time, but once its up you should have a debranded ROM as if you had just bought the phone new.
Add the details for your google account and redownload your backup app so you can restore your data and you are good to go
thank you very much for your help,
I shall give it a try,
by the way, will be able to install official updates on it, or will I have to stick with custom ROMs for ever?
thanks again

Nooo, not forever. Just until you get a new device
But seriously: Custom roms don't work with official updates. The trick is that most of the custom rom developers provide their own flashable updates for their roms. The difference is in the way you perform the update. There are even fairly developed custom roms, like MIUI, which have their own over-the-air updates (actually more often than official updates are coming.)
EDIT: In fact, you can switch back to a stock rom anytime and get the official updates back.

lol, possibly....hello,
although a lot of effort had been put into creating a lot of resources which are very user friendly, so it's quiet frustrating when they aren't even looked at.
Plus development is for just that, which is why the moderator moved the thread.

OK, I understand... but how do I get the official stock rom?, and by stock that means it has no Orange apps at all right ?

Once unlocked, i.e. rooted, you can use titanium backup or a root file explorer to uninstall the apps you don't need from the rom you are running atm.

Well, again: read around the forum a little, please. There is a sticky thread right on the top of the development section, called ROMS/RECOVERY/ROOT etc. It's a must read for newcomers. Very useful thread. There you find a link to a collection of stock roms. These are distributed as .exe files, so you can run them in windows and a simple-to-use installer will pop up and help you with pushing the stock rom to your phone. It is advisable that you double check that you are flashing the rom you really want. Someone here will help you to choose the right one.
EDIT: By the way in the general section (where we are now with this thread) there is also a very useful sticky. It's called Guide for Newcomers to Android. Seriously, it's a good read, given that you own an Android phone...

OK man, I will do that, thanks for the tips
Thanks chris5s, Ill definitely give it a shot.
This tool would help to get rid of the annoying Orange splash screen, and other useless apps could be removed as stated before.
Of course, best way is to install generic HTC European rom or custom rom of your choice.
Aforementioned tool would also help install roms, radios, etc, of your choice.
Good luck
Peace
Edit: sorry, Android flasher won't help install roms, but will help with installing custom recovery - Ext4 or Clockwork Mod - essential in s-off/rooted flashing.
Hello,
First of all, thanks for this great forum, i'm new to android and being here is really helpful.
I've read some of the guides posted, still i'd like to have some tips and infos.
I'm from Italy and my Desire S is still working on Gingerbread (!). I would like to update the firmware, if not to Jelly Bean (since the custom one is still beta, but advise me here), at least to ICS, but i don't know the routine to follow (ROOT, then Flash one of the custom ROMS? Being in S-Off mode is needed i guess). Another thing i don't get is flashing radios..
Help would be really appreciated, THANKS.
There is nothing to tell you that you can't find by reading the stickies and understanding what to do.

If you haven't messed with your phone, i.e. rooted it, flashed any fancy thirty party rom, etc, and the phone is running official HTC ROM and in the exact same state as you bought it, I'd suggest OTA and upgrade to official ICS since you are new to android. Go to setting - about phone then update from there.
If you'd like to try other ROMs then there's plenty guide in this forum already.
Imo official 4.0.4 is a bad idea.
1) It has bugs
2) hboot 2.02 cannot be downgraded without htcdev

My Desire S is new and "untouched". For what i had got, the official htc release is to be installed manually and has some issues, so I had thought a custom and more recent ROM would have been better.

Then use revolutionary (S-OFF) not unlock via htcdev.com, 4ext recovery and you are good to go
If you are on Sense 3 you will have to downgrade in order to use Revolutionary.io
And of course I concider the ROM in my signature as the best to date

If you are going custom better not use OTA
Revolutionary will install custom recovery so the next thing will be a backup of your stock ROM and installing the Rom.zip from the sdcard via the recovery. No rooting, because all custom ROMs are pre-rooted.
My ROM is ICS, there is no complete stable JB yet but once you have s-off you can try them all within minutes. And do not forget to sync/backup your data (contacts, etc) to Google or with some app from the Play Store. And read some guides before starting anything. I am just giving you directions not a tutorial

So why do you "root"? Just to unlock the phone without touching the FW?
Going custom i guess it's the only way, because htc is not going to update anymore, so better learn how to.
Anyway THANKS A LOT, it's more clear now

Yes you can root your current software (the stock one) if you need just root for an app or something specific without changing the software.
But going custom means to run Android and Sense version which you will never have officially. And they all come pre-rooted

One last thing amida... What's the difference between the various Sense versions? Just the theme? Will it be updated along with the installation of a custom ROM?
THANKS AGAIN

They have different versions, because they are ported from different devices and there are difference between them. Not only visual but also performance.
More info about each ROM you will find in the first post of its thread.

The best app for applications and data backup is titanium backup. It also allows you to make a flashable update zip you can flash after installing a new rom

Ok, and for saving an image of my stock ROM, just in case i need to go back?
Nandroid backup is a part of the recovery and not an app.
Start reading instead of asking, please. The procedure is covered a million times in a million places.
To the answering guys, (almost) off-topic:
I have a riddle for you, or actually, a somewhat sad observation to share and see your opinions. Since this thread is one of the examples for what I'm going to talk about, and it's useless anyway, I won't feel any remorse diverting it.
I've seen several threads during the last couple of weeks where a random noob got the best out of one of the knowledgeable members of the community - in this and other forums - and they helped him instead of sending him to read stuff that he was supposed to be reading to know the answer.
In absolutely all of those threads, noob questions continued and deteriorated to the most basic ones. There wasn't even one thread where the noob wouldn't continue with flood of basic FAQ-sort of questions.
I've wrote in a couple of them more or less what I wrote here - an unpleasant message to stop the flood of baby questions.
All of the noobs were offended.
All of the noobs actually searched and found their answer after that message, and stopped the flood (with a message that here, they were so great they actually found everything themselves).
It's kinda sad, don't you think? Quite a few times bad treatment seems the most efficient way to achieve the best results... Guess there's no miraculous other way I'm missing, or maybe there is?
(P.S. I'm also moderating a local motorcyclists forum, and keeping the same harsh line in technical sub-forum. Works 100% for >5 years already. But sometimes it gets you wondering about human nature...)

don't worry i'm not offended... i read most of the stuff and guides out here, not taking just a minute to post the thread and having everyhting done by someone else.. i just needed directions!
