[Q] Root via Downgrade of firmware? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone confirm that it is possible to downgrade the firmware on our b70 devices in order to root them? I saw this on another forum and wanted to know if anyone else has done this succesfully before I mess up my monster of a tablet?

Can you post link to where u seen it? Only thing tho if we have b70 sbk2, i dont think you can downgrade, and rayman has found that b70 and b80 can be rooted, hopefully he'll release soon enough root for them

No, because it is not the firmware you can't root, but the SBK, which is in the hardware.

That would not work unless Team RayDroid releases the SBK for B70/B80 models. If we know that, then yes, we can modify the old ASUS firmware for downgrading.

Thanks for the clarification yall, i feel real stupid now, I should have known this stuff already...

No. SBK is different from the key used for updates. Releasing the SBK wouldn't change a thing.

OOps. At least I got the point across that it's not possible...

Even if one have the older SBK, once you're on 3.1 you can not downgrade.
Except the old SBK can use NVFlash.

Can anything be done with this tablet other then the stock rom?
There is no root/cwm for b70 and b80 models at the moment.
So I guess you have to wait before the bootloader is unlocked.
They are working on it.

figured as much has any other tablets had this issue outside of asus.
I'm using a B70 Transformer, and I was able to root it.
Check the SBK Detection Thread, so see if you have v1 or v2. v1 can be rooted.
SOME B70 are rootable, do yourself a favor and at least run SBK check like P500
stated above. Doesn't hurt.

As far as I know if u got a Pre-B70 device u can still root with Universal Root Toolkit using APX mode.
I am havin a B80 transformer and updated bymistake and am stuck.
If ur on 8.6.5.21 and hav a B80+ Transformer all you can do is Wait for a new Exploit
I have a B70, cannot root with .21! Shame, will wait for update.

Try using the Universal RootKit here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
I've successfully used it on my B50 and just this morning used it on a B60 model for a family member. It may still work for a B70 edition.

Agreed I've heard lot's of success stories for the B70 with this tool. I'm a B80 so I'm screwed (for now I hope), grrrrr Asus.
i just got a transformer for Christmas and its a b70. Will attempting that root method brick my device if it fails? I was following a root guide and stopped part way through just after i updated, came back and it said it wanted to update. Oops. Gotthe .21 update

It shouldn't brick it if you do it right, but there's always a risk associated with rooting a device. Some B70 users have had luck with the following rootkit, but not all B70's will work on .21 with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
Did you tried to root with RazorClaw ? Maybe it works with B70 AND .21...
(It doesn't work anymore on B80 AND .21...)

Razorclaw don't work anymore on .21 version, regardless of your serial number.
If you have serial number before B70 (and some B70) then the methods (like this) using nvflash work.

Unlock Bootloader Asus Updates

I understand that it voids the warranty etc (although it seems asus are better than some at fixing hardware issues on unlocked devices, and my warranty is with amazon anyway...)
What i dont get is the deal with updates. Does unlocking only stop ota updates? or will it prevent me from updating by downloading from the asus site, and doing a manual install?
Thanks for any info, i finally have a sound TF700 (3rd time lucky on RMA) and want to start trying out some of the ROMs!
Do not attempt to in install from Asus website. It will brick your tablet. Check the prime forums. There should be numerous post on this when they first released the unlock tool. Since you don't have nvflash I would advised against being adventurous.

Only OTAs are affected after unlocking, but you can manually update using the firmware from Asus site. With the firmware from Asus site you can recover your device or update but you can't downgrade to a lower version.

ok so two very conflicting answers XD
i would hope/assume that the second is true, but if anyone else could shed some light it'd be great :good:

This is absolutely untrue. Many of us that unlocked before the .26 update as well as some that have soft-bricked after flashing a CM10 pre-alpha were able to use the official updates and firmwares to get patched or back in working order.
^ This.
But I believe it re-flashed the recovery back to stock for some? (so better use those re-made zips with blobs posted here if on TWRP or other custom recovery or be prepared to do some re-flashing - just choose the most comfortable option)

I'm just going off of this in the dos and don't section of the prime. I guess it has worked for others.
DON'T
Once you unlocked the prime and installed CWM,*do NOT*try to install a super blob from ASUS (that is a blob file from one of the 'full' updates from their site)It seems that doing so*totally bricks your Prime*with no chance of recovery... (happened at least twice so far)

I believe some have flashed the official update using TWRP (don't have time to search for posts atm) and I know for a fact that you can manually do it by writing the blob to the staging partition with dd. Maybe CWM on the Prime has a bug with regard to official blobs?

As far as I know only the OTAs are affected, but why would you unlock if you were only interested in ASUS' branded firmwares anyway? The whole idea of unlocking is to enable installing custom ROMs! I sincerely do not mean to be rude, but I am going to direct: if you would, in any way, shape or form, be inconvenienced/scared/depressed/frightened/saddened to lose the functionality of updating from ASUS' repository, well, news flash: don't unlock at all. ; )

[TOOL][BRICKPROOF]TF700 NVFlash release!

Nvflash for TF700 is now among us!
This release allows unlocked devices to create a set of device-specific files that lets you access nvflash.
Once the procedure is done, you will always be able to recover any software brick (even bootloader!) as long as you keep your files safe!
NOTE:
THIS REQUIRES A NON-BRICKED AND UNLOCKED DEVICE. IT WON'T WORK ON ALREADY BRICKED DEVICES
THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE A PRE 9.4.5.30 BOOTLOADER
More details at http://androidroot.mobi/?p=492
Important note: License: Due to the nature of wheelie and the importance of people always using the latest version, Wheelie is NOT redistributable! You are allowed to download it and use it, but you are not allowed to redistribute it in any way - this means no GUI's including it, no reposting zips/tar.gz's and similar! At a later date, we will be releasing our source code and relicense it as GPL.
Enjoy

Thanks for your work. I was waiting for it to try new ROM.
Unfortunatly I have already received the .30 update
For my information, what render impossible the use on nvflash on .30
What probability do we have to see nvflash working with .30 ?
Great news! Thank you guys for your great work, you did it again. Also i think is time for us ( users) to show some appreciation for this and start helping Androidroot.mobi devs with some donations ,they truly deserve it,and not only for the tf700t work but for all their work on the Transformer line .
Wonder if they'll call it a day or try to get a method working for newer bootloaders as well.

We're obviously looking at options. Note that once a device has nvflash accessible, you can update all you want to any rom/bootloader etc.
They can only prevent creating the blobs, not using them.
Bad timing indeed for me too...

Is it possible to use nvflash if I've already installed .30 update but I'll make downgrade with command dd if=/Removable/MicroSD/blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4 and blob from .26 update?

that's how people with the transformer and prime have revert theirs. however, the .30 firmware supposedly has the same check in it that prevented the tf300 jb bootloader from being downgraded.
Just completed this.. thanks a lot!!

Is there's any way to know which bootloader I am running? The first rom I've installed is the Zeus v4 one.
Thanks

[Q] TF700KL

Anoyone wjho knows anything about JB og a Root for this device?
Iwould be happy the day i can get a custom firmware on it, sad that i dont know how to make this things on my own....
i think theres no way to root right now because the tf700kl has another soc as the tf700t and so the recovery from tf700t doesnt work.
and the recovery is the only way to root a asus device with jb on it.
so someone must make a recovery optimized for the tf700kl

There is still no bootloader unlocker for it either. I haven't dared to try the one for TF700T ICS. So even it there was a recovery, we might be screwed. The TF700KL is on ICS 4.0.4 atm btw. And the method what worked for TF700T 4.0.3 does not work it seems (I tried...).
