[Q] SOLVED App or Mod for Power Button on to Soft Keys? - HTC Desire S

Guys I was just wondering if there's an App or Modification that can be done to use the Soft Keys like Search Button as an alternate Power Button or maybe just Wake Up/Sleep?

Well as far as I see unlock needs to be on hardware buttons only, but to turn off the screen and lock without using the power button you can use screen off and lock, it gives you a home widget and notification widget option that'll turn off the screen.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium

I don't think the soft keys could work as they rely on the touchscreen which the screen needs to be on for. Soft keys for power is a bad idea anyway!

look at this video guys I think he manage to use the Search Function as Screen Lock/Sleep and as an alternate Power Button.
I can also do Screen Lock with Screen Off and Lock App, but not the Power Menu.

I want the same thing too. I wonder what did he do to his phone? an app or he mod it himself?

The soft keys are still a part of your touchscreen, pointer mode and opening the phone can tell you that. So of you want to use it to wake your phone, the whole touch screen must be activated....
It IS possible, but not battery friendly and not very easy in use.
Instead, why not use volume keys?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App

Use this to TURN OFF the screen using the search key. Just follow the instructions.
Screen Off and Lock
Then this to TURN ON the screen using proximity sensor. (might not be battery friendly)
Tap Tap App
Confirmed both are working perfectly..

Screen off and lock is great but to turn phone on it can't be done, was hoping of application that can get the phone to switch on via volume rocker

I managed too.
I had a tip from this post: Push me
The point is to edit the *.kl file.
But first do a nand backup!!!
I edited the following files (don't now if all are needed, but i thought i take the ones who match to me/my language):
saga-keypad.kl
saga-keypad-wwe.kl
saga-keypad-ger.kl
qwerty.kl
The files are placed in folder /system/usr/keylayout/
Copy them to your pc and make a backup somewhere.
Open the file(s) with an editor and change key 217 SEARCH into key 217 POWER in every of the four files (maybe to edit saga-keypad.kl is enough -> try out and report).

}
Then copy those files in your computer to c:\
Connect your phone with usb cable to pc and boot into recovery. (Make sure adb is correctly installed!)
Open cmd and type in the following commands (after every line push return on pc/cmd):
adb shell
mount /system
exit
adb push c:\saga-keypad.kl /system/usr/keylayout/saga-keypad.kl
adb push c:\saga-keypad-wwe.kl /system/usr/keylayout/saga-keypad-wwe.kl
adb push c:\saga-keypad-ger.kl /system/usr/keylayout/saga-keypad-ger.kl
adb push c:\qwerty.kl /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl
adb shell reboot
After restarting this should be working like in the video.
Good luck!
If this works for you mark the thread as solved and push thanks
Thanks @ andypig04 for showing the way!

I will try this Sir thanks
need to edit 3 files

Thanks.

[PROJECT] Volume Control *Developers needed!*

Hey Guys,
last night, as i was lying on my bed, i heard music as everyday on my HD2.
I recognized that the "volume control" issue was very annoying, so i thought nearly 1 hour at my workstation before sleeping about an app which could be very useful.
And i got it:
Now this tiny App lets you do a long press on the not used place left and right (left=system and right=ringing volume) in the home tab, and a volume control appears. Then you just swipe your finger up or down for volume adjusting.

This is just a project, and not a ready app. It would be very nice if developers would help me in getting this finished. My programming skills are not very good, therefor i need someone who works with me.
I also thought about making this to an widget for CHT, but i think this will be too difficult at first, we should just make it easier for the alpha.
I also please you not to just "take my idea" and develop something to get fame or so.
If the implementation will be with graphics like images and so on, i also would like to take part in it by designing those over photoshop (as you can see in the preview, which was made by me in about 15 minutes).
So, i hope that there will be somebody who is interested in getting this project alive. Please tell me when you want to take part in this project (post in this thread or PM)
regards,
sallal

Congrats on your 100th post!
I don't really think this is a "problem": There is no big difference between what you're suggesting and the way it is working now - I would even say the opposite is true: Using the rockers is possible in all apps - so you can change the volume any time. But using the solution you suggest would only be possible on the home screen, right?
I'm sorry if I'm putting down your initiative...
You don't need to swipe up and down to increase/decrease the volume. You can press the button and keep pressing it.
You also don't have to press on the grey background. It will automatically return to where you left off after a few seconds.
@MAMeingast: yes, i think you're right.
@Ruudford: if i keep pressing it, it rushes too quickly in a direction and gets too loud/silent.

Don't keep the button pressed - press it once to make the volume dialog pop up and then press it again to move the volume up and down in increments!

is there any way to reduce the amount of increments ? so that it jumps 1 bar and not 3 or so ?

Sadly, I don't think so. That is something I have requested myself (and many others have as well) but until now I don't know of any way to do that!
The only indirect solution I know is this. These registry tweaks will enable the small volume overlay (like the one you get when you press the volume rockers when on the Music tab instead of the big one covering the whole screen) and the small overlay uses smaller increments. I have made a cab with the registry keys for many apps. Try it and uninstall if you don't like it!

[MOD][SCRIPT] Enable/Disable softkeys Leds..

Hi guys,
If you are tired of the Led Soft keys aching your eyes when you are in a dark room playing with you gadget watching a movie then here is a simple solution.
It might as well save Battery by turning off those softkeys led lights or dont want LED lights to be ON while watching movie or during the day..
So here it is... Simple script to turn led lights ON/OFF when u need it.
I have no doubts it will run on all roms
FOR ROOTED PHONES ONLY...
ITS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP FILE
here is a noob proof guide..
How to Install:
1) Download and install GScript Lite from Android Market. Its free
https://market.android.com/details?id=nl.rogro.GScriptLite&hl=en
2) Download the attached gscript.zip file and extract the two files buttonledON.sh & buttonledOFF.sh to SDCard/gscript (make "gscript" folder in root of sdcard if not present already)
3) Run Gscript Lite. Allow root permission .Click Menu >Add Script.
If u have placed the two script files in correct folder, they will appear. Open and save them both. (dont edit anything other than the Name..you can change it to LED ON/OFF... See screenshot)
4) Two icons of script will be there to let you turn on/off those led lights.
Run one to turn off led light, other to turn on back to normal.
Here is a screenshot

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Rebooting phone will automatically disable this mod.. So u have to just run script again from Gscript Lite to disable led backlight of soft keys ..
You can exit or kill gscript after running the scripts.
Remember to hit THANKS if it helped
DOWNLOAD
So no body tried this one?...
Nice! I would have used it on some ROMs when the backlight keys were always on!

Thank you very much for this app, very useful! It works perfectly, however I only really want the LEDs off for certain apps, like the car mode or when I'm watching movies etc. It is possible to automate this? I have the app 'Tasker' which does allow you to automate the phone but I can't seem to work it out
And is there any way to stop the LEDs being OFF every time I turn the screen on?
Not sure how likely it is that you'll see this as the thread is quite old, but worth at try anyway.
Thanks again, great app!
EDIT: NVM got it working! Now just struggling to get the script to run in the background and not pop up every time I want the script to run!

[APP][update 17] Photo Button - make photo using volume buttons

Despite the fact that button phones became a thing of the past and touch screens perform almost any functions, in some cases buttons are much handier. For example, when you need to take an instant or secret photo. In case of a touch screen, you have to take several steps: unlock the phone, turn on the camera and press “take a picture” icon.
The Photo Button app enables you to take pictures without unlocking the phone. Just double-press any volume button and you have a photo!
The program has the option of switching from landscape to portrait mode, turning off sound and vibration when taking a picture. Additionally, the app gives notifications about new snaps.
To make the app power saving, activation and deactivation functions were added. The functions were complemented with a little widget for easier use.
Currently the application works on most models of mobile phones. But unfortunately, there are some phone models which don’t support the app, for example, some LG and Motorola models.
Install from Google Play
How to use it?
1. Install and start app.
2. When phone is locked (screen off) quickly press two times volume button (+ or -)
***New version***
Improved performance (especially one camera phones)
Flash settings
The focus mode (off auto shooting speed increases!)
Shooting mode settings
Notification about new photos added, you can click on it once to view a picture
Widget to control the activation of the camera added. Helps to quickly turn on / off applications to conserve power.
Vibration settings
Sound settings

The application still in development. If you check it on your device, write here.

Great app - works flawlessly on my p990 with TonyP's cm10.1. Would like to see a possibility to use press up- and down keys together instead of the double press option.
But all in all perfect for snapshots =). Thanks man...

I'd like, but I didn't assign credit card to my account with google play.
This is great, I've been trying to do this with Tasker for like a year haha. To make this perfect for me, it would have an option to take a quick picture when holding down power and volume up buttons (just like taking a screen shot except with vol up instead of vol down) Would gladly pay for the pro version for that feature.

I buy pro version of this app in 2013, I buy new phone but is removed from Google Play store, anyone have .apk I really need this app.

Simple, no Xposed, KK/Lollipop, Torch Lockscreen mod.

This is a very simple mod to enable the Volume-Up Torch feature on the Lockscreen in KK and Lollipop TW ROM, yes including OA8.
A note about the usage of the Flashlight. The mod stay enabled for 30 seconds after the screen goes dark, ie. you have 30 sec to press vol up to get your Flashlight On once the screen is dark.
You just need Root and a SQL editor.
Settings Storage -> settings.db -> system
add two entries:
torchlight_enable = 1
torchlight_timeout = 30000
Reboot

It is not a file, it is a database, you'll need SQLlite or any other SQL editor.
You then select Settings Storage
Then select settings.db
Then select system
Then you click the little + sign

Thank you for that break down of steps, it slipped my mind, rarely used sql

Ok, I made the necessary changes to the database using SQLite, but I still can't turn on the torchlight using the volume key. Am I missing something here? Also, you're picture isn't showing. Could you re-upload to see if I goofed the db changes?

it's not a perfect solution sometimes you have to "wake up" the up volume button by lighting up your screen with the power button briefly, hit the power button again to shut screen off then try the volume up button, torch should work then. sounds like its a hassle but its just three quick button clicks.
Well it's not sticking, the lines are being removed, how, I have no idea what would be writing over the file?

Make sure you are in r/w mode and not r/o if your using Root Explorer. if your using ES Filemanager make sure you granted root access and have it enabled in settings.
It would have warned me about not having root privileges, and I'm set to always grant... Funny thing is, it now sticks, so that's weird.
Only thing I was missing from xposed was my flashlight.. This will definitely hold me over till they get that fixed..
Can someone explain how to do this on lollipop? I updated the database located in the directions in the link below but it doesn't stick. I go back in after a reboot and they new lines are gone.
http://pocketnow.com/2015/01/01/nexus-6-tethering
edit - I copied the database out of that area, made the edit, pasted it back and it sticks now. It still doesn't work. I see another database entry for torch_light = 0. Is that overriding the new entries?
I can´t find Settings Storage with aSQLliteManager. Where is it? on the SD card or on the system drive?

I was having the same problem as my Power button was broken and I really wanted to restart my phone after regular intervals to get it's performance balanced.
I searched many websites and downloaded many applications to get rid of this problem. It took me long but I finally succeeded in the end.
Here is the simple step you need to follow to get a virtual power button without your phone getting rooted.
1 - Open Playstore
2- Download an Application “ Assistive Touch”
3- Go the settings of the application and click “Lay out”
4- Click on the + button which you can find on the screen easily
5- Add power button from the list of icons you want to add
6- It will ask for a permission, to add Assistive Touch in your services of your Accessibility.
Done. Now you have the Power button Options in your Assistive touch button and you can restart or power off your Android device by simply tapping it.

Manufacturers make sure to use the finest quality of robust material in order to ensure that you get a smartphone that stays with you for a long time. However, at times due to certain accidents or mishaps there are high chances that a certain part of your smartphone can deteriorate if proper care and protection is not given.
In the same manner the power button can deteriorate due to a mishap. But what to do if your power button is broken, how to switch on your smartphone before giving it to the repair person?
Switch On Your Smartphone With Broken Power Button Using These 4 Amazing Tricks!
Below are some techniques that you can try on your smartphone to switch it on without using the power button.
Technique 1: Use Physical Objects to Press the Keys
In case your power button is missing then you can consider putting any thin physical object like a toothpick or hair pin to press the power key. Keep pressing it till your device turns on.
Technique 2: Connect Your Phone to Charger or PC
This technique is applicable to a very few devices but it is worth trying. Connect your smartphone to PC using an authentic USB cable. The phone will start charging as well as it will switch on.
Technique 3: Press Volume and Home Button
If your device is an old one which consists of a physical Home button then you can try to switch on your device by pressing volume keys + Home key.
To follow this technique first press both the Volume Keys of up and down. Connect your smartphone to PC using an authentic USB cable. Next, while still holding down both the volume keys, and with the device connected to USB, hold down the Home button. Wait for a few minutes for the menu to appear. Once the menu appears, release all buttons. If you had rooted your device previously then get ready to get loads of warnings and commands on your screen. Simply use your volume keys to go through the options. Find and select the option of restart or switch on the device using the home button. And your device will switch on.
Technique 4: Press Volume Keys
If you have the latest smartphone which does not consist of a physical Home button then simply use your volume keys.
Hold down the volume down key and connect your phone via USB cable to your PC. Keep the volume button held down until you see a boot menu. Select the ‘Start’ option using your volume keys, and your phone will power on.
I hope my answer helps you in switching on your device with a broken power button.
