AT&T '4G' Sim cards increase Cappy Speeds?? - Captivate General

Just received my new sim card SKU 73057 that enables '4g' phones to get access to the faux G network...
wondering if i register this new sim that it will increase down/up speeds?
Anybody have one of these new sims and what are your speeds?

Not likely, as the Captivate doesn't have a 4G radio built into it. Your other option is to flash an i9000 rom. That'll get you faster uplink speeds -HSUPA.

'4g' sim cards arent magical....
they dont actually provide any more bandwidth than a 3g because what matters is what is provisioned to your account. sim card doesnt mean squat. i have a cingular 3g and a new 4g sim card....same speed on each one. no matter what phone i try it on. inspire 4g, atrix 4g, gs2, captivate, desire z, etc

anyone able to get download over 3mb with stock rom un-rooted?
i rooted my phone, my H+ icon is gone, i guess i'm not connecting to 4g network?
i never get speed over 2.5mb!

You mean 4G like speeds?
The highest I'm getting in Houston is around 3.1 mbps, a rep told me that Houston went green on Sunday but that they're waiting on the new 4G sim cards. Supposedly this will give us the speed boast but I'm not about to hold my breath.
Those new 4G sim cars do not affect HSPA+, those are for LTE when that is deployed. Only the backhaul increases speed.
I live just south of Dallas. I rooted my phone and The most Ive gotten is 4.38 down and 1.31 up. On average I get about 3.1. I am also using a 3g sim card.
Yea I wasn't quite sure if that was true at all. I just kept nodding my head like "okay that's nice".
Yep that's exactly it. The 3G sim cards work just fine for hspa+ when att goes to lte then you will need a new sim card.

I was getting over 4 mbps late in the evening. But average around 2.5-3
All the speeds that you guys are posting are 3g. The only exception might be the 4.38 klquicksall got. The phone will work perfect with a 3g sim but all ATT employees are instructed to use the new sim cards. I highly doubt ATT would make us use sim cards that do not have a purpose. If the sim cards are for the LTE network that would be really strange considering that is not even supposed to be released for another 6 months at least. I am not completely sure that they have even flipped the switch on the HSPA+ network yet.

i believe this is right. there hasnt been advertising for 4g yet. their commercials still say "now getting faster with 4g" and their website says the same thing. If they had it on, it would probably be different like "now with 4g". i think once they have their hspa+ network on, you will see advertisements about it. those who have the H+ shown on their phone probably means that you are in hspa+ coverage once it turns on. that is just my theory on the subject though.
Also, everything I have read says the Inspire is NOT even LTE compatible.
The new sim cards or for LTE use which wont have any effect on the phones we have now. The only reason for the push would be so when LTE phones are available int he future all you need is to replace the phone and not the sim.
And yes the Inspire is not an LTE phone but this information has been available since before launch as its simply a US version of the DHD. Its 4G through HSPA+.
PS: Have had the Inspire since launch and love it!
4g speed
I actually got 15.89 up and 3.66 down yesterday. That freaked me out!

how is that possible? you mean the other way around? And were you on wifi?

Coming from Samsung Captivate...

What do I need to know moving from a 3G phone to a 4G phone (HTC Inspire)? Will the SIM and everything work with the phone right out of the box? Will I be charged extra for being on 4G?
Switching sim cards is not an issue. 4G technically doesn't exist yet for the Inspire.

It will work just fine.
It should work just by swapping sim cards. Eventually you may have to get a new sim when HSPA+ rolls out.

Sounds great...thanks guys.
There should be some clarification made here. The Inspire requires a 4G data plan code to be added to your account - and it does require a new SIM if you are in a 4G area. Most of the coastlines around the country are 4G already. Well... "4G" anyway - the maximum theoretical modem speed in the Inspire is 14.4Mbps/5.76Mbps, which is pathetic considering T-Mo's 21Mbps phones and their 40+Mbps network.
Verizon currently holds the speed crown overall in the country when it comes to 4G speeds but it really depends on your area. Here in Colorado, Sprint bested both Verizon and T-Mobile on "4G" speed (WiMAX in their case) by a good margin in random tests by an independent lab not hired by Sprint.
Either way, I've seen T-Mobile tests that have passed 25Mbps - no joke - and I've yet to see more than 10Mbps (this was a test on Sprint) or 7Mbps on Verizon but at&t struggles to get 2Mbps so its a huge upgrade anyway.

According to several ATT corporate folks the 4G sim cards will probably not be required for some time. Its basically a new paint job on the old cards. And this is coming from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, aka Big Blues Backyard. Eventually 4G will he turned on. Then ATTs version of LTE. And it will be widely used & consumed. But until then its no real worry. Think about when 3G phones first started rolling out. We were still rocking our old sim cards for quite a while but there was an eventual need to change.

I got the information straight from a manager in business services. The new SIM cards that are being deployed with these phones are required, along with a new SOC code for "4G" internet service to work when it is deployed. If you go to at&t's website and look at their 4G map, it has been turned on in a very small number of places (Texas and Buffalo, NY to name two) and if you are using an old SIM, you will not get the faster speeds. I hate this SIM card business honestly. Coming from CDMA, it royally sucks when you have an issue and your cell is your only phone because of the fact that inactive SIMs cannot call 611. I went through that hell today. Inactive CDMA phones will still call customer service, giving you the freedom to get technical support without much of a fuss. I had to call at&t three times today because of provisioning issues with my Inspire and being unable to call from another phone.
In any case, if you are in a 4G area, you need a 4G SIM to be able to connect to the HSPA+ network, just like EDGE SIMs didn't connect to the 3G network when it FINALLY started to launch.

Well when I bought mine they changed the sim I used to have in the iPhone 3G with a new one... So I guess you should to.. It's free so why not?
It's true the 4G it's more an 3 1/2 G but what is gonna happen when they actually enable it???
This is why I said you "may" need the card. At&T has been vague on this

a few questions

i have a few question. i just bought my sensation. i would like to know if tmobile is going to charge extra for 4g usage conserding im using a 3g sim card. i read somewhere that 4g phones have different plans.
2nd is tethering free on the sensation and if not is there a way to make free (rooting or something)
3rd is there a way to disable 4g to improve battery

You should be able to stick with your current plan. That's what they did for me, and many other posters.
Are you actually seeing a 3G icon? What UL/DL speeds are you getting?
There's currently no way to disable 4G and force 3G. You can disable WCDMA, but that will force 2G only.
Tmobile's 4G is actually just 3G plus great marketing. You can disable 3G to help your battery but then you'd be down to just EDGE.
I am getting 4g service I was just wondering wether there was a 4g sim cand or something that would improve the spewed cause honestly its only a little faster. Also for some reason my Yahoo mail won't sync any sugggestions. And btw I'm loving this phoon coming from the hd7

So, to clarify, are you saying there's no protocol difference between TMO's 3G and "4G"? Is the TMO 4G just an upgrade in speed of the same 3G data connection? Since it seems there are 4G SIMs, and the IMEI needs to be registered as 4G, and the phone needs special HW and SW for 4G, I was under the impression that TMO's 4G is actually a different protocol.
I understand TMO's 4G does not meet the speed definition of true 4G, but it could still be using a separate data format and protocol than 3G.
On my phone so I really can't provide all the links and stuff but tmobile's
4G is hspa+ which is 3G tech. You can research more about it if you want.

Sprint vs Verizon sim card

How come Sprint doesn't use a sim for their LTE? Is the sim even necessary or is to bring global usage to the Verizon version?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
The SIM card is used for 4g. 3g and voice is over the cdma radio. And sprints does have a SIM if I'm not mistaken it's internal tho and cannot be accessed.
The biggest problem with the "non-removeable" sim setup that Sprint uses is you can't just pop it out & stick it in another phone.
I do this all the time with my VZ sim card.

thats for sprint? it looks like verizon its all handled through the sim for both lte and 3g.... right?
As far as I know its just the lte that needs the SIM. Now of course the phones are made to not function w/o them but I'm pretty sure it's only the 4g that actually relies on it

[Q] Verizon 4G Sim in 3G GSM device

From what I've read, you can pop a Verizon 4G sim into pretty much any unlocked LTE capable device and have it work.
Now I'm guessing this is going to be a no, but...
I got an Airtel 3G Data card (specifically the Huawei E1731) when I went to India and unlocked it, if I remember correctly it kept swapping from CDMA and GSM signals. Now if I pop the Nano SIM I got with my iPhone 5 into this data card, (I'll try to make my self a Nano SIM to SIM adapter) is there any chance of it working?
I've also heard if things like the 4G sim being deactivated when you swap to a 3G device. But wouldn't putting it in a 3G device be the same as using the iPhone 5 with LTE turned off?
And is there any chance of Verizon messing with my data plan if I put the sim in the data card and start using it with my laptop?
I just saw a a video of someone putting a nano sim in an iPhone 4s and it working so I think this should at least work on the data card, still worried about the Verizon side of this.
Also I just remembered something about different frequencies, would the fact that the data card is from India affect my ability to use it?
Actually, I'm pretty sure Verizon SIM cards are only for their devices. I don't think they work otherwise

I've read from a few different reliable sources, don't have any links on hand. But its the phone that is locked to a carrier, not the sim that is locked to the phone, so as long as the device is unlocked and has the required hardware, it should work with that sim.
In verizons case, at the very least the LTE should work with an LTE device, I'm not sure about voice, 3G, and 2G.
In that case you wouldn't get 3G on other phones, since the SIM cards Verizon has are for 4G LTE only, their 3G networks are CDMA and thus built into the phone.
LTE is a GSM technology which is the only reason they use SIM cards at all

That is what I was thinking, but the data card seems to have both CDMA and GSM bands and when I pop out the LTE sim from my phone I lose all signal not just LTE.
Now what I'm thinking is that, since the SIM holds all the Account info, etc, not just 4G related things, that if I pop it into the 3G data card, (I've seen Iphone 5 SIM be put into a 4s and work) that it should work. That is if the Data card is compatible, which I'm not 100% sure on.
The SIM in a GSM phone holds all the account information. The SIM in a CDMA phone is for data only - the phone will work for voice/text without it. The SIMs are different software/wise.

That's what I initially thought but, If that's true than why is my iPhone 5 not able to use Data, voice, or text without the SIM inserted?
I'm not to worried about it not working, the thing I'm concerned about is verizon messing up my plans if I try using the sim in a data card.
