So often, before I go to bed, I would charge up the phone completely and turn it off. 8 hours later, I turn it on, and the battery is at 70~80 ish.
Yesterday however, I just put the phone on airplane mode without turning it off, thinking it might make a difference. I woke up and the battery was 99%.
WTF?

Because when you turn on airplane mode, you turn off radio, wifi, etc about signal and data. It is about 50-70% power consumption. Consequently, when data is cut off, apps that needs to update via data, either wifi or mobile, won't update. That is another less stress on the battery. So on and so forth.

Well that's weird cause I put my phone on sleep last night without airplane mode and with 3g on, and it went from 90% to 87% by 7am. Maybe it has to do with low signal? I know when I have low signal my battery drops SUPER fast.

yes it is a factor. Same issue i have, low signal at home.

You totally failed to understand my problem. I'm saying airplane mode with phone ON consumes LESS battery than turning the phone completely OFF

I completely misunderstood your problem. Hmmm, in THAT case only thing I can think of is the phone not being shutdown properly. Aka the phone got stuck in a low level state with the screen off/unresponsive but maybe the phone was still processing network information. Then when you turned it on, you shut it off and turned it back on without really noticing.
That, or the FBI has been tracking you in the night.
We still didn't answer his question! Its weird that the battery is getting drained with the phone completely off.

How about telling us also what rom/kernel you are using?
Sent from my Calculator with Android.
I had an issue with my phone charging, it would take about 18 hours to charge the battery completely. Turned out the cord had gotten screwed up somehow. Also if you're using a USB extention cable, if you use more than one it will do something similar.
Charge your phone, turn it off, remove the battery and check if it still looses power.. so we will know if it s a battery problem or phone drainage problem
1. rom/kernel: cm 7.1.0.1, default cm7 kernel
2. update: second night with this Rom, and when i turned it off and on again 8 hrs later, it was 91%. Not bad.
3. I have charged full> powered down> removed battery> 8hrs later> insert battery & power ON, battery is full.
4. Computer USB charging takes probably over twice as long compared to using the outlet adapter.
I understand that phone goes into a low power state when it is turned "OFF", but really, what gives?

I have a feeling that the phone is not shutting off all the way. How about trying to shut down your phone, pull the battery, reinsert it, but DON'T turn your phone on and don't touch the power button at all, just reinsert it. Wait 8 hours, check it then.

My phone was off all night and charging. When the phone came off the charger this morning the light was green (100%) and powered off.
I powered the phone on when I got to work and let it discharge while sitting on my desk. I got to work at 8AM. By 12:30 the battery was at 35% and now an hour later the battery was at 8%.
I've attached screen shots below showing the battery level, time started, time with screen on, etc.
This can't be normal battery drain? In less than 6 hours my phone battery was dead. Screen was off, just sitting on my desk with the occasional use to see who was sending me text messages.
Running the deodexed and debloated ROM with Adrynalyne 4.4.2 kernel (running at 1GHz and smartass governor)
WIFI does put a drain also, shouldn't that much unless it's consistently searching or connecting and disconnecting
I believe Cell Standby means searching for service. Any areas where you have poor service at your job? Weak or no service will run the battery down quickly because the phone constantly searches and strains for a signal.
Where I work my desk is in a basement, and there's no or barely any service, and the same thing happens if I don't put it on airplane mode (but I turn WiFi on).
Same thing happened with my Droid, but it might be more noticeable on the Thunderbolt.
I took the screenshot in a conference room where signal is a little less. I sit near a window and usually have 4-5 bars. I had wifi on for about half the time it was started and turned it off when I noticed the battery at 60% in 2 hours. Still went down another 30-35% in the next 2.5 hours with wifi off, so about the same battery drain rate.
Bars don't mean a damn thing, the signal level (db) is what tells you how good of a signal you have.
this surely doesn't look right. I am on same kernel, stock battery and my phone lasted 28 hours doing almost nothing. I usually get 8 hours on normal use.
god, i am stock and can leave my phone on overnight and wake up with over 90%
30% cell standby is a lot of time searching for signal. Use the sense widget to turn on and off mobile network (if on a sense rom. If not d/l one off market or go into settings) and turn it off at work. You will still get txts and calls when you have service but it should save some significant battery life not going in and out of data service. You can of course use airplane mode if you don't mind missing calls and txts

Go to the market and download the battery calibration app. Follow instructions to a T n you'll prob be good. Charge it to 100% at about 4215Mv, then hit calibrate. Remove charger, let drain till phone turns off on its own then let charge to 100% before you unplug. Takes time, but worth it. Also a little FYI, after you calibrate it and unplug the charger, the battery level may drop a few % instantly. Just because the phone doesn't really know where the charge REALLY is till you turn the phone back on and charge again. Hope this helps. And YES you need to be rooted
4Geezy ON DopeDiculous's ROOTED TBeezy!
dopediculous's idea is good. I've never tried a calibration app, but it sounds like it would work.
Something else you could try... this works for me every time. What happens is when you flash a new kernel, your battery stats often go haywire for some reason. Here is a good fix that won't take much time to perform:
1. When your battery is at a 100% charge, reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery.
2. Scroll down to Advanced and hit your power button to select it.
3. Scroll down to Wipe Battery Stats and select it (this wipes your battery stats).
4. Repeat.
5. Scroll down to Back
6. Reboot.
EDIT: Sorry... it was late and I was very tired when I wrote this last night, but before you begin the steps above.... completely drain your battery first (phone should shut down). Then, keep your phone turned off and completely charge it until the light turns green, and then begin Step 1.

the battery calibration app does the same exact thing without the reboot to cwm
Check your setcpu settings. On some Kernels I've seen them switch to performance without me touching it, which put the phone max setting the same as the minimum setting.

the battery life on my tb was like this...i went to www.htcthunderbolt4g.com and tips and theres a suggestion on how to retrain your battery...let me tell you it takes 12 hours.
On a four hour flight this past weekend, I shut my stock 1.12.605.6 ThunderBolt off completely by holding the power button, then selecting "Power off". The battery level was at 68% at the time. When I landed and booted back up, my battery was at 17%. That's a 51% drop over a four hour period with the phone powered off.
To test it further, on the way back, I set the phone to airplane mode. The battery was at 71%. At the end of the four hour flight, I powered up the screen to see that the battery was at 68%. That's a 3% drop over a four hour period with the phone powered on, but all the radios (and the screen) off.
Has anyone experienced this?
That is strange. Have you reset the battery stats?

That's weird. Turning on/restarting your phone drains some battery, but not that much... I'd just leave my phone on airplane mode...

You need to clear battery stats or condition you battery with bump charges....when I first got my phone I charged it to 100% then unplugged it and immediately rebooted and it dropped to 78%. The batts are just weird imo

It didn't actually drop that much. It wasn't reporting the battery % right. Either before or after the reboot.

Ok I have searched and not found anything like this yet so I am going to ask. I know the phone has battery problems all around for a lot of people. Mine seems to be fine when it is on. It can sit and idle powered on all day locked and stay at full charge. It runs about 10 hours with minimal use and maybe 8 hours with some data use and a few calls and texts. Now I am experiencing a wired problem. When I go to work we cannot have cell phones. I leave my phone in my locker and power it off. After my 12 hour shift is up at work I come back to the phone with a dead battery? What could be causing this? And has anyone else noticed this issue?
defective battery? pull the battery and see if it still does it. If it does, gotta be a defective battery.. if it doesn't do it when pulled, you're not shutting off the phone maybe?
Yesterday I tried leaving the battery out. I took the battery out and let it sit 12 hours and it still had full charge when I put it back in. When I go to work I long press on the power/lock button and choose Power off then I watch it shut down and it just dies before I come back. I wish I could watch it the whole time. Today I left the phone off for around 6 hours and came back and it was fine though. Maybe it gets turned on some how at work. I have no idea. Or when I go to power it on it is just the issue where the phone isn't reading battery % correctly and it just says 0%
Seems like a battery driver issue or a defective battery? definitely call t-mobile and check if it's the battery. I've had some issues as well, but not that bad.
Weird.
So the phone powers off after you turn the screen on and it won't come back on? Try putting the phone in airplane mode.
Also, I'm assuming you are running the stock roms?
Might also want to check into a battery monitor to see if any 1 thing is pulling it down.
I think it might just be the battery driver. Sounds like the phone is in suspend so it doesn't power off properly until the screen is turned on and is revived, updating the battery % status, seeing 0%, and turning off.
CM7 fixed the wonky battery issue a few nights ago. Right now, I think a current CM based rom is the best bet as it has most of the drivers fixed. I'ved used mine pretty heavily today, unplugged at 8am and I just got a 15% battery warning at 11:30pm. It will usually last until I go to bed at midnight but I might want to play with it some more.
My HTC Sensation when turned off for a few hours it became very hot, I was stunned by that as I didn't know my cpu is still running when my phone is switched off. Anyone know the problems?
That's unusual. I'm not sure but if you shut it down, I think it actually goes into a sleep mode. It sounds like yours isn't sleeping properly. Have you tried pulling the battery, restart and then try shut down again?
Are you using the standard battery?
did you make sure your gps is off?, i left mine on for an hour and my phone was scorching!

I have totally turned off the phone, pulled my battery out for about 5 mins, and put in back and let it rest for a few hours and when i touch my phone, it was quite hot even though i haven't turn my phone on.

Yes, I turned off my GPS
The weather of the city you are living is too hot? if not,it's a serious problem of your phone.
I charge my phone to 90% or 80% each night, power off, and go to sleep. The next morning when I power on the battery has dropped 2%. I would appear the phone is doing something when the power is allegedly turned off.
What's happening? Is there actually a way to turn if OFF?
just put it to airplane mode and compare it.
Okay. First I'll do A/M with power on. Battery drops just like at night. I'll do A/M with power off tonight.
and why u not charging overnight
Uh, I don't won't to. It isn't required. I charge it to either 80% or 90%, power off, and go to bed. Why would I want to charge it all night? Last night I put it in airplane mode, charged it to 90%, power off, and went to bed. I turned it on this morning and it was at 88%. I'm just curious what it's doing overnight when it's in airplane mode and supposedly powered off. I don't know that it matters but I've had the phone since August 16th and I got it new.
than get use to it
I'm just curious. I contacted Sony Support today but since my issue isn't really a problem they didn't have much to offer. They were very courteous, though.
2% is "NOTHING" for an overnight drain. Please note that power off/on also consumes considerable power as it puts a load on the processor as it has to unload/load all the processes during that. My Sony phone loses 5% on an average per night and that is completely acceptable as it constantly works in the background (some apps keep refreshing every now and then, I also have poor network reception so that's also a consideration). I'd say: don't sweat too much and your phone's just fine!
On a side note, I also have a Samsung S22 Ultra that has an average 13-15% drain overnight.

Thanks. I wasn't worried as much as curious. Since I don't do games, music videos, or Facebook my battery isn't a worry. Just a curiosity. If I lost 15% in a night with power off I'd wonder if my phone was moonlighting as an Uber driver.
