CDMA phones and ESNs... - General Topics

It's been a while since I was on a CDMA network, so could someone refresh me on when my ESN becomes clean? I will most likely be switching my Bionic for a Nexus Prime if/when it releases, and I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any problems transferring it once the Nexus is activated. I don't think I ever had any problems with this on Sprint, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks in advance!

I'm sure Sprint can tell you the true status of your device's ESN?

The ESN is just like the IMEI for GSM phones. It is the serial number for each individual device. A "dirty" ESN refers to one that is reported in the computer system as lost or stolen or otherwise unusable on the network. If you buy a phone that is not one of those things it has a clean ESN most likely. When you get your Prime, just call 611 from a phone other than your current phone and tell them the ESN from the Prime. They will switch it in the system. If you get it from a store they should do it all for you. Does this answer your question or did I misunderstand?

Basically, I just wanted to be sure that my Bionic won't have any problems activating on someone else's account after my Prime is already activated on my line.

Possibly simlocked?

Is it possible I bought a simlocked I9020A? Works fine on at&t but my tmo simcard wont work at all (no edge). I got it off craigslist but did a factory reset, so figured anythng the previously owner did should be undone.
Aren't all GSM Nexus devices unlocked by default, only difference being GSM/3G frequencies?
So why did you buy an att nexus s when you have T-Mobile?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
If you're able to make calls with the tmo sim then it is already sim unlocked. Though I am not sure why you're not getting edge.
Btw, is it rooted?

yeat I thought I'd at least get edge with a Tmo sim in. I use ATT in the US, the Tmo sim is my womans and was just to test it since since we are traveling to Europe in two weeks.
It won't hurt to check your IMEI and /efs
Sorry, didn't see that it works on AT&T :/
You should get Edge at least. Guess there's something wrong somewhere else. Talk to your carrier. If you can use some features it's not simlocked at least.

I would try adding a tmo apn. Not sure if it'll work but worth a shot.

I have the same problem, but the other way around. I have an I9020T which does not seem to work at all with AT&T. I've made many phone calls to Tmobile, to AT&T, and to Samsung's tech support. I haven't found a resolution, yet. The last thing that was told to me by the AT&T tech support person this evening, was that perhaps I need a newer simcard - one that is fully compatible with this newer model of phone.
I'm also prepared for the possibility that the phone has a hardware defect, however I don't want to send it in for an RMA until I'm absolutely certain.
Samsung (after checking my IMEI) has told me that the phone is definitely sim-unlocked and usable on any carrier.
A couple helpful hints when talking to any tech support person:
Make sure that they cross check your IMEI number. They have a database, and if they can establish some facts about your phone that way, it can really expedite the process.
Also, be aware that tech support people step through flow charts with you, and they usually aren't actually very technically savvy. If you can get them started on a constructive tack - they'll find the right flow chart, and you might get a lot more help than if you simply call up and say "it doesn't work."

What can I do with a stolen s4g?

Call the service provider you have and tell them it was stolen. They can lock the IMEI on the phone rendering it useless unless the main board is replaced.
Contact your carrier ASAP.
If your in the US, there is no imei blacklist. They'll block your sim but they claim they can't block the imei. The truth is that they can, but they won't.
Make sure the person that stole it from you has it to their ear then, send a frequency that liquifies their brain.
Wishful thinking.....
If it's not yours don't touch it...

That might possibly be true, I do not know for sure as I have not really researched much. But I seem to remember a XDA member reporting that they got T-Mobile USA to blacklist their HD2 that was stolen. Wish I could remember the name of the thread, but it was several months back.
Now at the OP of this thread. You may want to check out the advice given in the threads I linked here. Also have a look here, it is a link from one of the threads I linked.

What "Plan B" does is to install the apps remotely via PC - Market which using same google account. Then the said App will send sms to your pre-set phone (maybe ur friend or wife phone), please search andriod market for more information.
Thanks mils69 to introduce this great app to me.
We do NOT blacklist GSM phones per some order from the FCC GSM standards and conduct jargon. We are only allowed to blacklist SIM cards. So if your device is stolen they can pop the SIM in and use it instantly with no penalties.
However they CAN see who is using that IMEI ince the "new SIM". However the person can saybthey purchased it from a random on the street and then be let go instantly. That's the law. Receiving of stolen property/goods for some reason does not extend to cell phones for some legal reason.
I've worked for Tmobile and AT&T and Cingular and they were all the same rule set. So i know this to be 1000% accurate. Sorry bro.

anyone have a dead Sensation IMEI they could give up

Trying to activate a a simiar on Tmobile for prepaid for my kid. Have activation kit but it asks for my IMEI number. If anyone has a completly dead bricked Sensation sitting around, If you could PM me the IMEI number I would thank you.
Why not use the imefrom theSentation you're trying to activate? It's located under the battery on the sticker.

First thing I did, Tried mine and my wifes. Says call customer service. Thinking its due to our IMEI in use now on our contract account. I searched online and this is a known issue. Need a dead or not used (and not stolen) IMEI to activate with same features.
Figured someone in the Sensation forum must have one in parts that they would not care about sharing the number. I dont think it matters what country it is from. Just need it to activate his.

i suspect that there are details that are being left out. It makes zero sense that you can't use the imei from HIS sensation, the one trying to activate. No one in there right mind is going to give you their imei number. there is too much info a smart person can gain from it, if it's from a device that was activated.

doesn't make any sense, man. have you called t-mobile? what are they saying?
You could also put an imei from any old tmobile or ATT phone and it'll go through..
On prepaid there isn't any "features" that will be different if you use a sensation imei as opposed to any other random one.
Besides, the system updates later on with the imei of the handset in use.
Unless you're trying to game the insurance policy and reported one lost. Then you'd have a "lost" sensation whose imei you don't want on your prepaid line.
If that's your worry then I can tell you you shouldn't worry.... Put a different or no name and address.
Unless it was reported stolen..
All speculation of course..

[Q] Changing Numbers when Flashing to different carrier

In this thread, i do not ask for any help with any flashing to other carriers. I only have a question about it
Donor: Samsung Prevail
Phone to be flashed: nS4G
So i got a used NS4G from a friend. It has his number on it
My question is...if I flash it, will I have to take the phone to sprint to get the numbers changed? or will the number change to my donor number when I flash it? oR WILL a new number appear?
by the way my donor is activated and was used before
:banghead:
Be careful. What you're talking about doing is a felony and you seem to have no idea what you're getting into.
Good luck

Not to be rude but if your title is more specific, e.g. with NS4G in it, maybe there wouldn't be that many viewers. I thought it would be something I could help with, but I'm not familiar with CDMA networks. I used to be on Sprint once upon a time, and I remember I had to take the phone to the Sprint store to have them activate my number on it. Goodluck!
This may work but u 1st need to get the MSL code for the ns4g. Try the app called "get my msl" . U need this code to call sprint. Just say ur buddy had sprint and he gave u the phone.
When u call they will have u enter the phone prompt commands so be on a stock ROM so they work and it will match what they see in their monitor.
This is compared to actually having an old phone that u wanted to switching to ur number.
Now they may catch on or say that the phone was never a sprint phone since the ESN # behind battery isn't in their system. So hopefully they don't bring that up.. then ur good just as long as u did the flashing correct.
Good luck

Felony? How about the carriers give users the ability to move a phone from one cdma network to another just like GSM phones are capable of. Is unlocking a simlocked GSM a felony also?
What should be a felony is having a user buy into an expensive 2 year contract by spending $299 on a phone made in China for $180 cost and not letting you use it anywhere but their network even after the contract.

Its sad you have to go through such measures just to get a decent phone without paying an arm and a leg for it. But to answer your question if I understand correctly, one you flash it and use the donor phone on ns4g it will look like the donor phone to sprint or other cdma carrier on the network. So the old number should no longer matter and the ns4g should register the Samsung Prevail number.
OK thanks for the help

I got my NS4G flashed to boost, it is actually more than a simple flash, the ESN is changed to that of the donor phone. So sprint will always see it as the prevail. Just remember the prevail can never be used again without changing that ESN also.

You need to have your NS4G connected as USB modem.
my 10c on the matter - the number is tied to the SIM card you are using. No matter what you flash, you can't change that. My advice - do not play with this type of things, you'll get your phone locked up and from there on it's all downhill

[Q] Flash US Cellular GS3 to Verizon?

So we all have heard about the locked bootloader on the Verizon GS3. I was looking at the differences between the many GS3s, and I noticed that the US Cellular and Verizon phones had the same radios. Would it be possible to buy the US Cellular version for the unlocked bootloader and activate it on Verizon's network?
Verizon won't activate a phone that doesn't have their logo on it. The ESNs are completely under their control.
If you have a really good friend working at Verizon, they may be able to hook you up, but like the previous poster said, they won't generally activate any phone that isn't a Verizon phone.
What i been wondering is maybe they could take something from the us cellular phone to unlock the bootloader or something for verizon because they are pretty much the same radios
Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
Again, no. They don't give a damn about the radios, it's all by the ESN. If Verizon doesn't have that ESN in their database, they will NOT activate it, period.
Also, for EndlessDissent, your "good friend" would have to be one of their database engineers, because a retail employee can not and will not add an ESN to the database.

This. At the store we cannot do anything about it. If you know someone that has a 4g phone you can try putting the sim card in the us cellular phone and see if that works. Normally when we activate a new sim card in the system we don't need to input the esn number, just the sim card number. Worth the shot. Let me know if it works. Thanks.

Yeah... I think you misread the question. Activating a phone on a different network is completely dependent on the ESN (which I learned a few posts ago). Also, his question doesn't seem to involve helping to unlock the Verizon bootloader at all.

My Verizon 4G LTE SIM Works with the US Cellular GS3
I bought a Galaxy S iii for U.S. Cellular used from someone. I was planning on selling it since I got it cheap, but i decided to put my galaxy nexus sim card in there for the hell of it. IT WORKS! But I warn you, it's not fully working. Here's what works:
Phone, Text Messaging, and pretty slow Data (NO 4G)
Doesn't Work: MMS (picture/video messages) 4G Data
I am pretty excited and am trying to figure out a way to get MMS and 4G Data working. For the price I paid for the phone, I'd say I got a pretty sweet deal on a GS3 that works with Verizon.

This is very untrue, I have my phones flashed from any carrier, to my network through a retail employee. Not completely sure how the process works, but I do have issues with MMS, (I have to use GoSMS for MMS) and I can not get support for my phone from customer service, as well as insurance, etc..
Although, Flashing it is the easy part, and activating it is the issue. The only reason I am able to activate is because he is a retail (Store front owner) employee with the carrier.
Flashing to Boost or Cricket is exceptionally easy with flashing and activation.

I once called Verizon to see if i could activate a flashed iphone 4s. They said no because they would need the ESN number in their database which it wasn't. However, he said if it was a flashed 4g phone with the SIM card , it would be possible.
Verizon Samsung SIII
ROM: Jelly Beans 8

I have a US cellular GS3 and put my Verizon sim card in it. the phone works fine, data, calls and txt etc. the only issue i have is the phone wont go to 4g. 3g perfectly fine and i know the bands are the same for LTE. and i have LTE coverage from Verizon in my area.. any thoughts?
