Hi. I just received my Xoom back after the 4G upgrade and now I'm unable to root. I've followed all the steps, but when I type fastboot oem unlock, the command prompt just says <Waiting for Device> (I've confirmed that ADB can see the device), and that's it....it just sits there. Can anyone help me?
Did you boot up the xoom? And do a DB reboot bootloader? Then fastboot OEM unlock?
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
Yes I did...
Was it unlocked when you sent in? If so it may still be unlocked.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
It was unlocked, but they've upgraded the software to 3.2.2 and it's locked again.
It might not be. They don't have to lock it to flash it. And they probly didn't check either.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
Ok....pardon the ignorance but how can I tell? I no longer have Superuser. I can't even flash a custom image. Should I downgrade it to 3.0, Root, and then flash it with the Custom 3.2.2 found here on XDA?...
No not that way it screws it up! Use this and only this! Skip the unlock and see if the files work, then you know you were still unlocked.

Hammer....tried that....no matter what, once the Xoom bootloader reboots, all I get is: Starting Fastboot Protocol Support. Nothing else happens and my adb windows just sits there and says Waiting for Devices.

That's because your timing is slightly off, and you're letting the stock recovery overwrite your custom recovery. You have to "catch the boot"
You can follow these steps:4. Install recovery image (CWM)
If you haven't done it already, download the recovery image file and save it to your computer in the Platform Tools folder.
(Download the recovery image from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1074979 only the img file flashed through fastboot Remember, never try to flash a zip file through fastboot!)
4.1 Boot into flash mode with 'adb reboot bootloader.'
4.2 Install your downloaded recovery image: 'fastboot flash recovery recovery-solarnz-100611-1150.img' or whatever is the exact name of the recovery img file you are flashing.
4.3 Enter CWM recovery with the procedure below.
4.4 Restart the device with 'fastboot reboot'. Timing is essential here, so be alert when the device restarts, or you will have to redo section 4.
4.5 Once the Motorola logotype is shown, start counting to 3. At 3, press the Volume Down button. This should result in the text 'Android Recovery' in the top left corner. If it does not work (if you see Starting Fastboot Protocol), experiment with the timing (see below).
4.6 When 'Android Recovery' is shown press the Volume Up button. This should invoke the CWM recovery menu. If that works, then congratulations for getting this far!
Here is a potential pitfall. If you are unable to enter CWM *before* the device boots into Honeycomb, then the newly installed recovery image will be overwritten by the system default recovery. Just repeat steps 4.1 through 4.6 if that happens.

I got mine back yesterday morning then used the Universal Xoom Root instructions and files to root it yesterday afternoon. Perfect!
-ts
I've tried that...won't work. As far as my timing being off....I'm literally watching the Screen the whole time...I never even get anything except the Fastboot Protocol screen...nothing changes. I simply can't go further. I've tried loading the img file (Step 4), but can't even get that far. I've spent an hour on the phone with Motorola yesterday and after being bounced to 5 different techs, they told me to contact the developer.....which I've done, with no success. I'm almost tempted to send this damn thing back and ask them to revert my device and install an older OS onto it.
Let the device boot all the way and make sure debugging is checked.

It is. That was the first thing I've checked.
Then androidsdk may be fubar. Reload your sdk and try again. Make sure to use the newest and download all the files it needs. Redownload the root files too. Then see what happens. My sdk had to be updated when I bought my xoom.

Ah, I will do that. Matter of fact, I'll download it to my other laptop...which never had any sort of anything SDK related on it, give it a fresh start. Thanks....will do this when I get home this evening.
No such luck. Step two: Fastboot oem unlock....window says: < waiting for device > and my xoom just sits there and says: Starting Fastboot Protocol Support.
I've tried this on a totally different laptop, brand new SDK installed, fastboot, and the motorola drivers for the xoom. I'm at my wits end.

Hey everyone. I figured id make an official thread, although a thread a few down is very similar but still quite different.
I attempted to re-lock my XOOM wifi and I got the error.
-only able to get into RSD mode 2 or Fastboot protocol
-pc will not recognize through adb or RSD 5.0
-tried various command and no luck
-Screen wont turn off unless battery dies.
- reinstalled sdk, drivers etc.
I might of missed a few details, but ive been all around the forums and have yet to see a solution for this other than send it to Motorola. Ha just curious to whether anyone could shed a little more light on this situation. Not being able to RSD or adb seems like a bad situation, even if we did have that darn sbf id still be stuck! Thanks guys!

Try to get the xoom back into fastboot by rebooting (vol up + power) and then immediately holding vol down + power until the fastboot screen comes up. From there try pushing system and boot .img's through fastboot. Then you should be able to reunlock from the fastboot command on your pc. There is no way that I know of to re-lock a wifi only xoom as of yet.
Yeah, my bootloader screen says that im "Starting Fastboot protocol service" but I get no response from my PC. I've never had problems with adb recognizing my xoom before this. Its like the drivers arent even compatible with the device anymore?? For craps i attempted to send some commands through adb even though it didnt recognize the device, and had no luck. ADB simply replies "waiting for device" for all of them.
try reloading your moto drivers
Make sure you aren't using a front panel port. I had thus problem for ages, XOOM is a power hog. As for the LNX failure its the result of relocking with an invalid image, don't do it.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Yeah, i spent days trying to figure that one out with the front ports vs. the back ports with my droid. I could never get it to remount in RSD when flashing a .sbf.
Thanks for the heads up though. Im not sure what made me think that it would be ok. My failure to do some research always lands me in pretty much the same spot! Here.
I reloaded all the drivers ect and have been unable to get anything. My droid works great, but no xoom.
Had this exact thing happen to me today. What fixed it for me was
- boot into fastboot (Power+Vol Up then immediately hold Vol Down until you see it display the fastboot message) and push the stock boot/system images found all over this forum for your model (Wifi/3G)
Now obviously your ADB isn't seeing your device... neither was mine
- Go under Device Manager on your PC and uninstall your Motorola drivers from whatever devices are listed
- Do a fresh install of the Moto Drivers and restart your PC
- Run, 'fastboot oem lock' to allow RSD to do it's work
That's what it took for me. If that fails, unplug your Xoom from the PC and set to debug mode, then plug back in and let Windows find your drivers. Windows could take some time, and actually took me unplugging/replugging twice until it decided it found them.
RSD is a load of junk, but when it works it's like the miracle worker =P Good luck and keep your head up! These things are harder than people think to completely wreck =)

Sorry I guess I didn't mean to set it to Debug from the Xoom, but as in to remove it and boot into Fastboot. Then plug it back in and allow Windows to install the drivers.
I had a hard time getting it to work, but after uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, it recognized it and allowed me to flash the SBF.
Correct me if I'm wrong here! It's what worked for me. My Xoom went down like this and I resurrected it this way. Been working flawlessly on Tiamat 1.3.1 ever since.
Sorry guys, but the condition I'm in is becoming popular lately. I'm able to get the XOOM wi/fi to show "starting fastboot protocol" but absolutley no recognition on the pc. RSD or ADB. Therefore all commands sent from the ADB simply respond with "waiting for device" and unable to flash any images onto the device. Its in a real brick mode. At least for the time being with the lack of software communication on the pc and no .sbf yet. I sent the device into motorola for repair. They said the repair would be under the warranty and free of cost. I was honest as well, telling the repp I had unlocked the device and attempted to re-lock. Thanks for all the suggestions and input guys.
follow up?
hello i am curious what happened with your returned brick? did moto replace it?
I ask because i have the exact same issue and have gone through all the suggestions.
same error, cannot get into fastboot, no adb, no RSD, nothing. tried the various vol power button combos etc. no recognition on PC at all. yes i re-installed drivers etc etc etc... i have been reading...
it seems only option is to wait on SBF or return?
Yeah the only solution would be an sbf flash. But even with that i do not know how because the RSD lite does not recognize the device either.I simply placed an order online, they sent a box the next day, sent it and got it back in two days. Extremely fast. I told the tech rep over the phone that i had unlocked the device and and then downloaded an app that starting causing for restarts and so i attempted to re-lock the device and from there it was officially a true brick. I was honest and they seem to be very understanding. Im sure they understand that the lack of support for the device is evident and we are all beta testers. SO let em know whats going on. I also let him know i was a developer, whether it mattered or not i dont know, but i was just being honest. Its all covered under warranty he said. I didnt pay a penny
OK well its good to know I am totally screwed!!! thanks for the reply...
I told the rep on the phone what I did but I don't think he had any clue what I was talking about... he asked to me to reboot with vol up, then try to boot into fastboot, but didn't once say fastboot, just said vol down, then said he would send me a shipping box.
Get it today!!
I am in this situation after trying to re-lock in order to install the 3.1 update. I tried re-installing and updating the Moto drivers, rebooting etc but I can't get my PC to recognise the device in fastboot or RSD. I am on a stock Canadian ROM (but unlocked obviously).
I have sent an email to Motorola and been honest with them. Will see what they say.
That's the thing - moto provides all the tools to relock for US ONLY! There is no official way for canadians, which makes no sense. So us canadians can unlock no problem, but cannot relock, yet US units can? Strange to me...

Anyone who locked the zoom back and now can't boot, try my instructions from another thread...
1) Turn the xoom on and leave it plugged into USB. 2) When it says Starting RSD Mode 2, type the following in your command prompt in windows "fastboot oem unlock"
*Make sure you are typing these commands within the directory where your fastboot and .img's are located. ( I dropped mine in C:\Android-sdk\platform-tools\*The Xoom will not respond initially and your command prompt will say "waiting for device".
3) Hold the power button and volume up to reset the xoom. The fastboot command should intercept the xoom booting and take you to the unlock prompt again. Follow the on screen instruction.
*This will wipe the device again, which I'm assuming you did when you locked it with a custom kernel (boot.img)
After it is completed, type "fastboot reboot" in windows command prompt or just reboot however you can.

I have just tried this and still no luck. Fastboot just sits there with the "waiting for device" message and the Xoom just boots with the "Starting RSD mode 2" message. I also tried your suggestion with rebooting into fastboot mode by holding the vol down button and that doesn't work either.
BTW I don't have a custom boot.img. I am on a stock ROM but I just had the bootloader unlocked.
Incidentally I have tried RSD lite 4.8, 4.9 and 5.0 now and none work.
I've got a Nexus S that got screwed up from the 2.3.6 OTA. It can go into fastboot mode and recovery mode but it will not boot into Android. When you try to unlock the bootloader you get the unlock screen, can select yes but when you press power the device just hangs. If you go into download mode you get a screen about unlocking the bootloader. Odin detects the device, retrieves the pit, sends the image you want to flash to the phone and the phone says image verified. Then it just does nothing. Odin just sits there and there is no other feedback on the device. It looks like if the bootloader is locked you cannot flash with Odin either. Or at least if the device goes into the strange unlock bootloader screen instead of the true download mode screen Odin flashes fail. I have searched and searched and cannot find a resolution to this problem. Has anyone figured out why some devices hang when you try to unlock the bootloader and has anyone found a way to work around this problem. I am trying to help a guy out and don't want to give him back his phone telling him there is simply nothing I can do for him. He has a TMO device in Thailand. Samsung service here will only service phones sold in Thailand through authorized channels. Since it has a TMO model number they won't touch it.

Can't. Clockwork recovery image is sent to the phone. Then it says failed because bootloader lockaed, use "fastboot oem unlock" to unlock the bootloader. And on the phone it says something like Flash FailedState LOCKEDbootloader.
Without being to unlock the bootloader no image can be flashed. I even tried a stock boot image just for a test and it was rejected in the same manner. With the bootloader being locked down it won't let me flash anything. I would need a stock signed rom with android-info.txt and android-product.txt files. I have yet to find one. I think that would flash the phone.
Odin is a no go also. The images are pushed to the phone, the phone verifies the images and then doesn't flash them due to the bootloader being locked. And in download mode I don't get the shovel guy I get a screen telling me to unlock the bootloader but I am connecting in the manner that Odin can see and talk to the phone. The phone just refuses to flash the images once they are downloaded to it.
same for my nexus s,how to solve it?thx
I'm also having the problems here.
However, I simply cant get fastboot to work. It is continually stuck on 'waiting for device' (since the 2.3.6 OTA update).
I tried to flash an old 2.3.4 stock ROM I had on my SDcard, but recovery wont let me. ClockworkMod also cant be flashed because of the fastboot problem.
Yes, I checked that my drivers are up to date, I've tried using fastboot from both windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04.

Do you mean getting stuck when you try to unlock the bootloader (fastboot oem unlock) or can you not even get into the bootloader at all.
I can get into the bootloader with "adb reboot-bootloader" or just holding the power and volumeup keys on. However, no fastboot commands work at all. My lock state = unlocked, but even though I have the superuser app installed, I dont have root access.
All the problems started when I foolishly applied the OTA update from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6.
maybe try on another pc?

For anyone who comes across this thread again, the tools you need seem to be in the SDK but do not work. The tools that work are at the website of the above video-maker (I cant post links yet, but if you search google for 'nexussrootnew.zip' the first hit should be the website nexusshacks.com)
I'll be installing cyanogenmod I think, since I'd rather that I never again have an OTA update from google.

I tried this but it still requires bootloader to be unlocked so it didn't work. My problem is similar to OP's. My phone appears to offer the bootloader unlock option, but selecting 'yes' to unlock fails to actually unlock. So nothing else works to restore the ROM. Though the phone does accept commands from adb just fine.
Anyway, I'm just posting this in case anyone else has the the same issue w/ bootloader not unlocking.
i may be up a creek now. i've tried everything i can.
here's the whole situation, maybe someone can offer some guidance on how i can get my phone back.
i installed this rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835478, but did not see that there was a problem with people getting stuck at the initial google boot logo. i wouldn't have tried it if i did.
but it's too late now. so i too have that problem. in addition, i also have that problem with the nexus s in that the power button is busted, works only to boot the phone.
so i boot the phone normally, i get to that boot logo indefinitely.
i press up and power button i get to fastboot screen. for some reason the volume buttons don't work on that screen so i can't pick recovery there. only thing that works is hitting the power button and reboots the bootloader.
i plug the phone into my pc and i can't access it through adb, fastboot... does not recognize a device is connected.
so in summary, all i can do is access the fastboot screen or the boot logo screen.
if someone can help me figure out how to do one of the following: boot into recovery instead of fastboot, figure out how to use the volume buttons in fastboot, or get the phone recognized by my pc so i can use adb, that would be awesome.
i feel like i just bricked it for good....
thanks
Install the SDK. Launch it. Find the drivers to download in the SDK. Install them. Boot the phone into fastboot and connect it to pc. Open up a command prompt IN the directory that has fastboot in it. Type in the command prompt fastboot devices.
If your serial number shoes your good to go. Get the .img of your custom recovery and type fastboot flash recovery nameofile.img. with that being the exact file name ( hint type the first letter of the recovery and hit tab)
Yep, you gotta get fastboot working again. It's pretty important.

and if it doesnt then let me know i will try to help out more if i could
P.S I am also new in android so pardon my noobnes
i went another route...
i figured i had nothing to lose at this point... so i ripped the phone apart and attempted to fix the power button, which i believed in turn would fix not being able to use the volume keys in the fastboot screen.
i was correct. i jiggled with the power button inside and it seemed to work. the volume keys now reacted in the fastboot screen.
i was able to then get into recovery, wipe the phone, connect the phone to the laptop and put a new rom on it.
i'm not sure if its fixed the button completely, but at least i can get into the new rom

+1, I agree with you. It does not cost much as well. I had this problem and was managing with apps. But finally got it replaced for good.
Today I bought the HTC One X
I immediately jumped on xda looking to root, I've rooted in the past with Samsung Infuse and Motorola Backflip, and I'm very discouraged right now
I installed the One_X_ATT_All-In-One_Kit_v2.1 and everything was going well, until I tried to flash the TWRP recovery, and it ran, but didn't at the same time it was very odd
Anyway, in Fastboot I can't flash a recovery because the cmd promt says "error: device not found"
also, there is no OS installed so I'm in a constant bootloop
Main Issues:
- device not found
- boot loop
- recovery won't work because the SD card won't mount, something along those lines
- also day of the super bowl...
Not sure why this is all happening, who can help me out? Willing to donate...

You probably factory reset in bootloader by accident... You'll have to plug the phone in and right click on removable storage and format. Even though it doesn't recognize it should still format.
When in fastboot, type in --> fastboot devices
See if it sees anything

It also sounds maybe drivers aren't working? I have no idea. Just throwing an idea out there.

I ended up relocking my device, and below **** RELOCKED **** it says **** Security Warning ****
also, typing in fastboot devices worked at first, it showed up, then i relocked device and now it doesn't show up.
Plugged into computer, doesn't show up though, it's charging can't format
Since your relocked (you shouldn't have but its cool lol) download the RUU matching the firmware your phone is using... Run that and it should get you back to stock

How am I gonna be able to do any of this if the device can't be found in order to try and flash it?
Can you take the SD card out,and use external SD card to USB to format

Reinstall HTC drivers.. Restart computer, and plug USB into back of comp if on desktop, main USB if laptop and try again. Make sure when in bootloader if says fastboot USB in red.
Once again type fastboot devices
See what happens...
Also... Try to right click on your adb/fastboot folder and choose "open command prompt here"... Run CND from that path and see if it helps... Just a thought....

GREATTT!!! for some reason now, on my HOX the fastboot usb is only available for one second...
I can't find anything anywhere on this problem, when i boot into bootloader, it's for less than a second... Unbelievable
Relax, then try a different port and cord combo. Then if possible try a different pc

ok I fixed this problem, so now I am still stuck on the error: device not found issue
that's my main concern, I can't flash because it can't find the device
Man there's some funny business going on... Try to right click on your adb/fastboot folder and "open command prompt here".... See if that does anything better
It should find it if your in fastboot. You at least sound fairly knowledgeable about most of it.. So I can't say user error... As wrecker said try different ports, try reinstalling HTC drivers and restart computer... Try unplugging and plug back in
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk 2
you can always try with linux then you dont have to mess up with additional drivers

fastboot can find it now, and I was able to read the CID, just 11111111
going to try and flash from fastboot command prompt, how long does it take usually to download boot.img through DOS?

Have no clue, why would you do that? Why not just download a recovery image and fastboot it

What are other methods of flashing not through the AIO Kit Hansen2000 or something like that?
Also, I tried this http://www.androidauthority. com /one-x-revert-stock-recovery-76854/
and it seemed like it worked, but still no OS installed, constant boot loop

Don't use anything that's not from xda. OS stands for OPERATING SYSTEM! you need to install a recovery first. The toolkit should have contained the recovery image. It should be like open recovery.twrp.2.3.3.img or something like that. Download that file, and drop it in your adb/fastboot folder. Enter fastboot, right click on adb/fastboot folder and choose open command prompt here. Type this --> fastboot flash openrecoveryname.img
^^^ of course replace the end with the exact name if the recovery script you downloaded. Easy peasy right? If you manage to become successful, reboot bootloader and now you can boot into your "custom" recovery (twrp) . if you manage to be inside twrp, High five yourself.
Back on your computer, download cleanrom 5.1.. I'll explain why later once you have a working phone again.
"Mount" in twrp. Watch for your computer to prompt you if what you want to do. Choose "open to view files" or something like that. Next window is your sdcard. Drag cleanrom5.1.zip anywhere on your SD card, just remember where.
In twrp, unmount. Choose install, find the cleanrom5.1.zip. Flash that biootch. Let it boot and report back with any questions

So if you run into any more device not found stuff, put the folder of the one x toolkit directly in the root of your C drive. That worked for me.
Edit: I think this actually solves a different issue that I may have confused with yours, but worth a try.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
you should of just run a ruu when phone said fastboot usb and left it stock for life until you learn something
you should also stop using the toolkit and learn to do it all manually first, i haven't yet used the toolkit since this phone is super easy once you learn the basic android stuff and read. flashimagegui is ok since it allows for flashing roms on fly without using pc.

Agreed. This webpage the OP mentioned is not even for our phone, its for the quad core version (code named ENDEAVORU). Which is often the case if you go to other websites. They don't clearly delineate between the dual core and quad core versions, which can lead to a real brick.
Particularly in this case, if the file had flashed properly, you would have bricked. Installing the recovery from the wrong device is a bad idea. And recovery is not the same as the OS or ROM.
As others have suggested, it seems the OP needs to read and learn a lot more before doing anything more with the phone, or else permanent damage is going to happen.
Hello all,
I seem to have really soft bricked my TF300TG. I've now run out of ideas and maybe someone in here can help.
The following happend: I wanted to update my rooted TF300TG from running JB (CleanRom 3.0.4) with Bootloader ww_epad_10.4.3.9 to the current stock Rom from ASUS ( V10.6.2.6 ). I did unzip the zip from ASUS once and used the resulting zip for the flash.
I attemted this via Method 3: TWRP v. 2.5.0.0, following this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187982), guess I should have read the whole thread, not just the first 20 pages.
What happend was, that during the flash in TWRP I got an error with no error message. I tried to flash again for three times with the "same" error. Thats when I panicked and rebooted the device.
Since then its sitting here, just showing the ASUS logo and doing nothing. I think I understand why its doing nothing since I have still the old bootloader v 10.4.3.9 but a new 4.2 Stock ROM (albeit maybe damaged).
Sadly I have also had no success communicating with the device via ADB or Fastboot.
I still can access the bootloader menue which shows 4 icons: RCK, Android, USB and Wipe. But: the volume up key is not working (did work in Android though) and the volume down key traverses the item entries. So I have no way to select USB which should put me into fastboot mode.
Does anyone have any idea? Otherwise I'm declaring this my last Android tablet (loved it but it didn't quite live up to expectations, Tegra 3 just sucks) and move on.
Thanks for reading!

Try resetting the device (the little hole beneath the volume rocker and try to get to fastboot. there is no real reason other than broken PITs or trashfiles in /misc that should prevent you form getting fastboot.

Hi buster,
thanks for the reply. Sadly I can't seem to enter fastboot since "fastboot erase system" stays at "waiting for device" when I reset the device with a paper clip and press the volume down button.
I'm trying this on linux but that should be a plus versus using windows.
Thanks again

Yes I have fastboot and adb installed. They come with the Android SDK which I need for work.

I have the same problem. Difference is that I did a reset after a failed install of CM11. Stuck at ASUS splash. Cannot access recovery or any other option that was previously available. Nothing is detecting the device as it sits...Tried Ubuntu, Win 7, Win 8.1. I have tried installing all drivers I could find, even tried installing as legacy device, but all drivers give an error that device cannot start. Did A LOT of searching around, and it seems to come down to the tablet not being detected by PC in the state it's in. Seems like there is a lot of help out there for folks that can get their computers to at least see the device.
Would die for some help!

CWM from probably close to a year ago. I attempted to use Rom Manager to flash a newer recovery that would work with CM11, and got stuck in a bootloop. Then I stupidly did a factory reset from boot menu . Wish there was a way around this...and I think I could work some magic if I could get a computer to detect the brick.

I was able to get to APX mode with the universal drivers (Vol +reset)...looking around to see if anyone else has had success. I never installed Nvflash...

Since i have apx access, i'm assuming the data side of the cable is working...plus, without being able to get into adb/fastboot on the tablet a new cable would be useless. Thinking about getting a mobo on ebay...one for 50 and one for 75$ i think. will have to get wife's approval first

So I'm assuming there is no solution to this problem without sending it to ASUS or getting a new Motherboard?
I'm in the exact same position...

Wipe data from the bootloader erases everything, if you don't have nvflash blobs I think you're done for.

"bootloader wipe data" soft brinks your tab.
always use custom recovery or fastboot to wipe the tf300t.
otherwise you need to erase all partitions and reflash recovery and start from scratch. assuming that fastboot still works.
cheers

Boot loader wipe is a hard(ish) brick unless you have nvflash blobs since all you have access to is apx mode, no boot loader, no recovery, etc.

not necessarily, I did it for cm10.1 (drunken flashing not advised ) and i don't have an NV backup.
and i had fastboot to work with.
but things may have changed since then.
