Ok my G1 is done and out, i'm not sure what phone to get. I'm staying with t-mo because i'm still under contract on some of the lines on my family plan. My limit on spending on the phone is $300 so no Nexus or Milestone,I AM eligible for a full upgrade price through T-Mo though...
Here are my current options
MyTouch Slide-Not too crazy on the cpu, not a lot of feedback/hype of the phone, so maybe not alot of support will come to it after it's release?. Dont really like that it's targeted as a beginner android phone
wait 'til Galaxy S comes out- But will this thing even come to T-Mo? If so WHEN?
wait 'til Motoroi, havent heard much about it. Highly doubt it will come to T-Mo
wait and see if Nexus One comes to retail store???
wait and see what this whole "Big thing" in June 19th is all about that T-Mobile is talking about
What do you guys think I should do? I would like to get into a new android phone within the next month, I'm using an ancient brick right now and I really miss having a smartphone
Honestly, I don't like any of the phones you mentioned. If I had to reccomend a phone, or two, I would suggest the Touch Pro 2 because of the keyboard, does what you need it to do and then some, great deal of applications and custom roms available. Second would be the HD2 because of everything that I said about the TP2 but waaaaayyyyy faster.
I dont need a physical keyboard, though I want to stay with Android.
I had my eyes on the HD2 but only because of the possibility of porting Android onto it, but looks like that wont happen.
Isnt the TP2 a dated phone? How is it faster than the HD2?
hmmm well i got my nexus one for 365 without a contract but i dont think you could do that anymore since they cancelled the online store... i ordered and cancelled and just paid the ETF instead of the 529....for me its all about the support from google and the devs, since the mytouch slide has sense ui itll take wayyy longer for it to get updates from google.
I would wait out to see what happens with the nexus one bro, this phone is the best thing and i came from the g1 as well.
I know man, I want to get either the Galaxy S or the Nexus but I dont know how long I can wait..
I was thinking of getting a mytouch 1.2 or something from craigslist to cruise until something worthwhile actually comes up from T-mobile and then selling it off again.
I did this when i broke my 1st G1, i got a 2nd G1 to cruise until something comes out,but the 2nd G1 didnt last long either. IDK if I want to pay the $200 for a used mytouch 1.2 with the fear of not able to sell it later down the road....
Hey im new to XDA but so far i like it a lot looks like a bunch of great people. I'm eligible for and upgrade and am seriously considering the Inspire any reasons i shouldn't get or should i wait for the new latest and greatest willing to listen to anybody opinions let me know what you guys think
I've been watching the conference coverage happening in Spain right now (Barcelona, right?) through Engadget. So far I haven't seen anything that is making me P.O.'ed at purchasing the inspire.
The future is dual core processors apparently, but reaping these benefits is still a ways off... Enough for me to enjoy the inspire, and possibly purchase a new phone in a year when LTE is rollin'. I really don't have the best handle on this stuff so don't quote me.
I'm wondering the same thing. I've heard rumors that the Samsung Galaxy S II will be coming to AT&T. I would like a new phone now since I am eligible for an upgrade, but as soon as the S II rolls around I'm afraid I'll be regretting the Inspire.

You won't.. I bought the Inspire just to get away from Samsung (they don't care about their customers and never release updates), and am so glad I did.

But if I'm rooting it doesn't really matter what Samsung decides to do. AT&T hasn't updated to Froyo on my Aria, but I'm running CM7 so I don't really care.

This.
The Captivate, without the help of XDA is a crap phone.

It does matter. Without an official Froyo release, there won't be official Kernel source code. The Captivate ROMS are GOOD, but they are pieced together with source from other models.
The reasons there isn't CM7 on the captivate are there's no other phone similar enough to it unlike the Aria, so no source, and the fact that they used a very borked up file system and without kenel source, it's virtually impossible to re-write the file system and not have something else be flakey.
thanks for the help so far guys any more opinions would be appreciated
I would say go ahead and get the Inspire it is a nice phone and I don't have any regrets buying mine. I also look at it this way.
If you wait for the next latest and greatest phone to be released; you might as well not buy anything. Since; when it comes to tech toys; once anything is released to market; from CPU's to graphic cards to smart phones to tablets; there is always something in the works that will make it old tech within a few months. So chasing the latest and greatest becomes a game that you most likely will loose.

So basically... I'm wondering what maybe some of the Captivate users are looking at getting.
I'm on my fourth Cappy. Now the speaker stopped working on it (Just the headphone jack works for sound now).
Pissed at this phone, honestly.
I'm going to see if I can talk AT&T into letting me get a different phone, on the basis of this being a lemon.
Any suggestions?

If I had to replace my phone right now the Inspire is the one I would get. It's really a nice phone and has a lot of developer support.
I bought an inspire off-contract to replace my captivate... it's pretty nice. I would recommend it.

My speaker stopped working twice and had a new one put in warranty. Third time it happened I just tapped on the speaker and it came back on and now I keep a lil peace of paper inside right below the speaker to keep a lil pressure on the connections. Been working great

Press the speaker usually works.
I'm done with the Captivate, in other words. Too many issues with it.
Custom ROMs are the only reason I've hung on this long.
Would you not consider the Atrix or (shudder), Jailbroken iPhone 4? The Inspire's battery is so small.
My main thing- is I think I'll sorely miss the Super AMOLED. The next phone with AMOLED is looking to be the Infuse, and who knows when that comes out.
I've tried replacing my captivate but imo there is nothing out that compares yet.
I started with an inspire but took it back 3 times due to poor screen. Then tried an atrix but mine was junk. I had it for 2 weeks which for half of that time it was in it's box on the fridge while I went back to my trusty old captivate.
I think no matter what I end up buying eventually I will still keep my captivate as a backup just in case.
If I were you I would try to get another one, I've had not a single issue with mine other than the gps crap. Get another captivate and wait for something better to come out than the crap that att is pushing now. The inspire is an old design and the atrix was released too soon in my opinion.

Its so sad that ATT doesnt have much options in smart phone section. Still the best android phones are inspire, atrix and captivate....
I own a captivate and i am very happy with it...but when atrix was launched i thought wow dual core will be so nice...my room mate got it...and i am so happy i didnt just jump on it....the first thing is screen...nothing can replace SAMOLED....other thing was I saw Atrix hanging, where as my custom rommed captivate was running smoothly...Atrix has that locked bootloader issues..
Sorry I'm on wrong forum but got a friend whose captivate wont turn on its dead not rooted.

you talking about the speaker phone or the internal speaker??? i have an extra internal speaker if ya need one. they're really easy to replace
Wow I've had my Captivate since 3 days before official release and it still works perfectly.
Honestly I'm waiting to see if T-Mobile and AT&T merge, that way when I get my upgrade (In August) I can hopefully buy the sidekick 4g... But that's depending on so many circumstances, plus samsung is making it. *gags*
Design Gears dumped the Atrix, eh? That isn't too reassuring, lol.
Infuse is out based on the battery life.
It looks like the only option is the iPhone 4..... 3.5" display... Not as much power under the hood as my Captivate, either...
Hmmm, I've got some decisions.
I guess I could always sell said iPhone 4 in 6 months when the GS II comes out or something. Apple fans are always willing to buy.

The merger is a year out. That's already in black and white ink. In other words, they won't even start the process, until a year from now. Which means it'll be at least, 2-3 years before customers see the benefit.
Just learned in this thread DG returned his Atrix... Checked the signiture it's true
Maybe should wait for a while, there are many phones coming to AT&T this year.

From what I've been reading, all Tmobile bands will be switched to ATTs bands so the radios would have to be replaced.
The Inspire is the best thing AT&T has at the moment, but its battery is horrible.
CM7 Inspire 4G
So warranty does not have access to iPhone's.
It sucks, but I don't think I'll ever be able to get them to get me one if I want one. It's also not surprising because obviously part of Apple's deal is that Apple takes care of warranty for the iPhone, thus ATT Warranty does not have access to any.
What they offered me was pretty much anything else though.
The Inspire and Atrix were too new, they didn't have any in warranty yet. Those are the only two Android phones to be considered equivalent or upgrade (Inspire is out solely based upon the battery).
They also offered me some Win 7 devices but in all honesty I don't see those being equivalent in any way. I haven't really researched it and know squat about Windows 7 Phone.
So I'm stuck now. I don't know if I should wait a month or two to see if the Atrix comes into their warranty or just replace the Cappy...
I also got sick of the Captivate and got an Inspire. It definitely works a lot better than the Captivate, and aside from the battery it much nicer. If you don't like the big screen though that might also be a consideration. Personally the battery does annoy the hell out of me though.
I just switched to the atrix other than shi$$y programming in loved cappy so I just took it all the way to stock kies'd it to 2.2 and gave it to my nephew. The atrix is like running a custom rom except its stock that actually works heard a lot of good things from the guys over in the atrix forum is love it so far.

It is upgrade time.
I have been on a bit of a Android/iPhone magical mystery tour for the last few months after many years of Blackberry'ing.
Been through the following -
BB9700
BB9100
Atrix
iphone 2g (back to unlimited data)
Captivate
iphone 3GS
Inspire
iphone 4
Back to the Atrix, which I currently have.
Now due to my own ignorance my Atrix is now temperamental, managed to lose the original pds.img with multiple ROM upgrades, downgrades, sidegrades and grade I could throw on it.
Anyway my wife has been looking at me suspiciously due to all these phones, truth to tell I guess it has cost about $150 after selling these on.
I think I have the Atrix back to usable now and I really like this device but for a daily drive I keep looking at it and wondering how long it will remain stable.
So my choices are get a new Atrix or perhaps look at the Infuse. The reviews of the Thrill have left me less than thrilled and not convinced by the 3D aspect after playing with a pals Evo 3D.
That leaves the question buy an Atrix or Infuse or wait for another Android device of similar specs comes along to AT&T ?
Whatcha think ?

You should probably wait few months more.
or try the inspire.. plenty of nice roms. great build quality... prolly my fave phone right now.. batt life still sucks compared to other androids out there. but since im at my computer all day at work. im by a charger, same in my car..
oh and cant beat the price 99 at att. or like me 1 penny at amazon..
the infuse is nice. but still dont care for samsung.. and moto. well never cared for them either..
or just wait it out. til another htc mega droid comes out prolly later this year.
Im at the point where i dont care whats current or coming down the pipe. cause seems like android is gonna be in saturation mode before to long. too many phone coming out to keep up with..
Thank you for replying.
Think I am going to have to do something sooner rather than later as my Atrix keeps going...well... the only way to describe it is whacka-doodle.
Did have the Inspire for a bit but managed to forget it above. Nice phone but that battery life killed me.
Guess it is off to Ebay to get something else to play with and then will see what the pre Xmas launches brings.
I've put it off for as long as I could, but it's come time to put my trusty captivate to rest and get a new Android. I've been with AT&T for 2 yrs, and really don't have a preference on carrier and am willing to switch to Sprint or Verizon, just not T-Mob.
Due to Amazons crazy penny sale, and black Friday I thought now's the time and wanted to get some opinions on a few phones. As mentioned, I've been with my Galaxy S for 2 yrs and have loved every minute of it, and while one of the Galaxy SII variants is the obvious choice I've also been checking out HTC and a few of the other brands.
I loved my captivates screen... I'm rough on phones and it's held up to everything I've put it through; it also has great depth and is crystal clear even compared to my brothers Droid X2 much to his surprise lol. Dual Core is a must of course, and as far as updatability goes I'm sure I'll have it rooted and rom'd asap so I'm not that concerned with "Will it get ICS?" like some other folks will be. I've been rom'd since I got the Cliq ages ago, so no worries there
I guess I'd like to hear some opinions on whats best of the bunch with the Galaxy SII variants, and which other companies/phones are comparable to those in terms of power, etc... I'm not new to Android world by any means, but I've lived in my Samsung powered bubble for the past year or so which means I don't know squat about the new, and its overwhelming to take it all in.
Any help or advice would be appreciated, I figure once I can narrow the phones down a bit I'll start looking at carriers a little more and see who's got the best 2-line family plan.
Well for black friday (Boxing Day...or week here in canada) the Sprint SGSII is a great buy. But if you have that extra money to spend and if you dont need an SD Slot, get a Galaxy Nexus. It's Google's flagship phone after all.
in my opinion, the GSII on at&t is the best looking...thats why i have one
i'd say either the sprint to at&t version would be great, or a galaxy nexus, but in my opinion, i think the GSII with ICS in going to be a better phone than the galaxy nexus
The Nexus would definitely be on my list, but its not going to come out here for until December so it's out for now. HTC and LG are the only other two brands I'm looking at right now; I like the Razr, but had bad experiences with Motorola in the past, so I'm on the fence about that one...
LG is just as bad as moto, maybe even worse. look at the 2x. It's either sammy or HTC.
Being in Alaska, USA I have very limited choice on carriers. AT&T is the only "BIG One" up here.
I also have been using the Captivate and with various ROMs recently to keep things fresh. I to have been looking and I do love the Samsung screens but I might jump for once. Been debating with myself on another Samsung like Galaxy Nexus or the Sony Ericsson Arc S, unlocked only $380 and in various colors. SE did announce official ICS update for this phone.
Samsung, cuz it has the most awesome screens or HTC because of the overall quality. Don't think you can really go wrong with any of those 2
HTC Evo 3D 1.2 ghz dual core, HDMI out, Wimax and 3D movies, photos and video recording. Whilst its a lil gimmiky its Loads of FUN. Otherwise it sounds like one of samsungs latest offerings is the go.
What about Nokia N95, I heard it's an iPhone killer

I am going to be the LG-P930 troll that I am and say "LG-P930".
On a more serious note, I can show you anything about this phone.
