[Q] Will a factory reset take my Xoom back to stock? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Will simply doing a factory reset take my Xoom back to stock (for the 4G upgrade) or will I have to go through the un-root and re-lock processes?

Unroot and unlock.

if you are running a custom rom, factory reset will only wipe all user data, bringing you back to the beginning of the rom (like booting the rom for the first time) do what the guy above me said to go back to stock

You can probably find the stock image for your specific device here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049485

Want to go back

I recently updated my nexus S i9023 to 4.0.3 and dont like it, its very laggy! How do i go back to 2.3.6?
Restore a nandroid backup...
Choose a rom from here and flash. You'll probably want 2.3.6.

Before you revert to gb, you'll have to perform a full wipe, not just a factory reset. Open the Mounts menu in cwm, then format system, boot, data, and cache - then restore your backup or flash a different rom.
How do i do that?

I take it you're bootloader is not unlocked? You'll need to unlock your bootloader in order to flash a different (in this case older) rom.

Factory Reset doesn't get me back to "Factory"

For whatever reason, when I do a Factory Reset using Clockworkmod, it only takes me back to a ROM I had installed a while after I rooted the phone. How can I get all the way back to "rooted factory"

Flash sparksco ROM. He is the only one with a rooted bone stock GB ROM. It should be in ROM manager.
*wipe data/factory reset in recovery=worthless

Factory Reset for selling phone

If I factory reset will it reset the kernel and radio to stock? I also have a few mods, will factory reset delete these? Should I just erase all data in CWM instead?
It will reset to the your current setup unless you actually flash the factory ROM.

To make it simple no it won't. Factory reset will wipe your dalvik/cache/data. To return it to stock your going to have to flash a stock image. Which can be found here and will give you stock radio, kernel, recovery and will get rid of the mods you installed. Dont forget to wipe your sdcard AFTER you've done all that and your set. You can also relock your bootloader if you unlocked it.

[Q] Can I go back to stock GB from stock oficial AT&T ICS?

It's a simple question, I'm on oficial stock AT&T ICS and I'm rooted
Can I reflash with rsd 2.3.5 or 4.0.4 fastboot files without any brick risk? Should I remove the root before flashing or it will remain in the next firmware?

Since you are on Stock ICS you will not be able to go back to GB. You will brick your A2 if you try. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961310 I'm not to sure about the your root question. If you search the forms I am sure you will come up with the answer. Good luck.

Ok, I will stay in 4.0.4, can I reflash 4.0.4 with rsd lite to recover all default system apps?
Also, is it secure to wipe data factory / cache partition with a2 bootstrap?

I'm not to sure about the wipe with bootstrap. I know with a custom ROM it is not recommended. Maybe one of the senior members can help us out with this question.

Yes it is perfectly safe and recommended to wipe data, cache and dalvik if you are flashing a new ROM, to do it from some type of CWM recovery (which bootstrap is). I would not do that if you are having a problem though. I would instead do a factory data reset from the system settings. If you can not get into that, then I would just fxz back, to stock 4.0.4, which will wipe everything anyhow.
Ok, so there is no risk of reflashing the fxz of 4.0.4 again when Im rooted?
Root stays in new flash or is lost?
Btw, I wiped cache partition and Dalvik with a2 bootstrap and no problem with that, I haven't wiped data factory yet. (Oficial stock 4.0.4)

You lose root cause fxz wipes EVERYTHING the reflashes. It is completely safe as long as you don't interrupt the process. Make sure you charge your battery to be safe.

Return to Stock

I'm sure this is discussed already but I can't seem to find it so if someone can help me or point me in the right direction.
I have a VZW GS3 that I have rooted, unlocked the boot loader and flashed CWM recovery. I then made a nandroid.
The main reason I did this was because I wanted Jelly Bean, and since Verizon is the slowest, I didn't want to wait so I installed custom ROMs.
Now that Verizon has released JB, I want to go back to my nandroid and then use the OTA firmware update service to upgrade.
Am I missing anything along the way that's essential for this to work?
Will the updated software re-root and/or relock my bootloader?
Will this automatically update the Baseband from my current VRLG7 to whatever the new one is?
One other thing, Will I still have CWM recovery after this happens? or will it revert back to stock recovery? or do I need to manually do anything to the recovery?
You're doing this to ultimately stay stock? Do you intend on flashing roms again or no? If you did a nandroid just after ONLY rooting and unlocking bootloader then restore it. Here's a step by step:
1) boot into CWM, restore your rooted, stock nandroid
2) Download EZ recovery, flash stock recovery
3) Wait for OTA
The OTA will relock your bootloader and unroot your phone. The JB OTA will also update your modem, and everything else, to VRBLK3.

No, you will lose CWM if you do what I detail above. The OTA will fail if you still have CWM installed.

For the time being I intend on remaining stock, but I still want to root. Maybe once CM10.1 becomes stable, I'll go back to it, as of now I've had too many bugs with 10 nightlys and stable and 10.1 nightlys.

I don't recall, but it's possible I did it after flashing CWM recovery, would that make a difference?
Thanks for your help!

Nah I was just verifying to see if you modified any system settings or apps while on ICS TW. You should be in the clear as long as you reset CWM to stock recovery if all you did was root, unlock, then perform a nandroid.

before I restore the nandroid in CWM, do I need to do any wiping? cache, dalvik or full wipe?

No you do not, the nan will overwrite everything anyways. If you feel better then factory reset and clear caches, but it's not necessary.

I followed the instructions above and I'm back on my rooted TW.
When i try and update i get the following message:
Service Unavailable
To check for system updates, go to Settings > About device when service is available
What's wrong, how do i fix that?
searched around on google and a lot of people had the same warning error, multiple solutions were offered but none of them worked.
in the end, I ended up installing from odin completely stock unrooted, locked bootloader etc 4.0.4 (as f i want to return my phone to verizon) and once i did that it automatically updated to 4.1.1
