Hi guys,
I have a newbie question again.. I just want to know what are the common problems the captivate have?
If you were given a chance to replace your fone, will it still be captivate or other fone? and why?
Did you regretted that you get captivate and not the other fone?
So far for me, it's the best smartphone out there..
Any input is allowed.. But hope not a bad one.. Thanks for reading..

some people love it and some hate it.
the hardware is awesome the software kinda sucks.stupid rfs file system that the distros no longer use for obvious reasons.
I bought mine in july and its now jan, still waiting for the "soon to be released 2.2".
the new samsung looks awesome but I will most likeley switch to htc because sammy has made me wait toooooooooo long for something I should already have.
It seems like the only main common problem is decent GPS. I've had good GPS since I bought the thing, others have never had good GPS no matter what ROMs or Fixes they tried.
I went with the Captivate because I had to stay on ATT and didn't want an iPhone, but I'm happy with my choice.
The gps is an easy fix using lbttest mode. I get 12-30 satellites. So no complaint there. I've fixed it several times, but older captivates have the issue of a bad gps unit.
I'd say no problems here except for stock rom.

If I had to keep it stock i would probably hate it. There are quite a few custom ROM's that make this phone unbelievable. I personally don't for stock so it works great for me. I've had iPhones for years and thought iphone was the best phone until I got my android. Its a major hassle just to JB the iphone. I have already replaced and stayed with Captivate and have gotten a few more since then. I currently use Cezar's SE ROM and its flawless. Awesome GPS/battery/speed/stability. If you like a good kick in the pants you can flash the OC'd GT version.

So for I love my Captivate. I have had it for about 3 months and I am getting the itch to root and play with ROMS.

Its one of those things when you do it you'll probably think its a different phone from every aspect. If you research and educate yourself you're good to go. I'm yet to brick a phone and I flash about 2-3 different roms weekly. Backup your original ROM before you start flashing. If you love it now once you customize it you'll probably want to sleep with it

Do not scratch that itch unless you plan to scratch it for the rest of the time you have an android phone. Coming from a rooted and romed backflip my captivate was running 2.2 within 15 min of the box being opened and I have flashed nearly every rom out there.

I plan on doing the same thing once I get my phone in a few days!!!
I don't know about anybody else, but when I had my captivate, I would frequent these boards and download just about any ROM I could get my hands on for the quest for a better phone.
Since getting the Inspire a week ago, it seems as though now I frequent the forums just to read. I have no ambition to have anything but the stock ROM because it is just that pleasant to use.
In fact, I really don't even think I want to root.....not really much of a need anymore other that Titanium backup and easy sideloading.
This is the first smartphone I have been truly pleased with out of the box.
If I could get the wifi hotspot to work consistently I think I would skip the root too. I am coming from a bone stock Nexus one. I really like vanilla android, but Sense does add a nice touch.

Ya What he said! Just rember to reboot everytime you change your apn. it works great and from the testing i have done and speaking with ATT they cant tell the difference..
Agreed, but
I loved this phone out of the box, but i have to tinker. It is a problem i have. I rooted and have tried just about every ROM out there. Nothing is quite as good as stock, but there are some really good ones out.
If you are happy with your phone, i say leave it. But if you want to root, this phone should be great as the devs start working with source and cooking up great ROMS and kernels.
The only tinkering I want to do now is theming. I will patiently wait for someone to deodex the stock Rom.

I'm not really sure where this belongs, or if I should post one of these at all, but you can comment on that if you'd like, I'm not going to care.
Anyway, I am a proud owner of a rooted HTC Inspire (or Desire HD as it may be called elsewhere). I got it around late May or so, and rooted it not to shortly after.
This is my first Android phone, and it is going to be for a while, at least until this thing breaks, we switch carriers, or something else happens. I got the phone at the time because it seemed like the best out of AT&T's current lineup, and was within my price range of <= $100.
Right now, I am currently running Cyanogen 7.1RC1 with LordModUE 6.0.1 CFS 2WCR, and themed with UpwardSpiral's excellent collection of themes (currently Orange Octane). I am also using radio 12.39a.60.19x_26.06.06.30_M (AT&T - April OTA) with data speed fix from here.
As for my status on XDA, I am obviously a noob, and my main goal is to at least get a promotion to full member (with it's extra benefits and such). I'll be hanging around the site, asking questions, posting info, and stuff like that. Until then, farywell!!
Welcome! I got my Inspire around the same time and am loving it. I was planning to keep this phone for awhile but may have to upgrade to the Holiday when its released. Hope to see you around. Later.

Welcome to XDA. Great ROM/kernel combo BTW.
Welcome, indeed! Can't go wrong with Cyanogenmod at all. I still like to try pretty much all of them, especially when there's an update. You will love your phone and the many options available here.

Thanks. While I do use Cyanogen as my primary ROM, I have tried out both MIUI and Leedroid - but I haven't used either for very long, so I can't say whenever I like these as much as Cyanogen, unless I decide to use them more.

Thanks. However, I have actually never heard of HTC making a phone called the Holiday. Googling showed that it a dual core 1.2GHZ Snapdragon (which is very advanced for a mobile phone), and it's preloaded with Gingerbread Sense. Interesting. However, I can't really buy it when it comes out, as I am on a tight budget, and at most, I can't get a phone until after two years if I want a discount for it.

And I got it running at 1382 max, 122 min with brazilianwax and PUV. It also scores 2729 on Quadrant overall too.
I also used your APN fix too, and the GPS fix additionally.
If you want to try a great Sense rom, take a good look at Virtuous Unity. Amazing Sense rom. I ran it for a full month until I got that itching need to try another AOSP rom.

Hell Yeah man, welcome!! I got my Inspire around then and it has carved a new direction in my future - quite literally! I've changed my Major to computer programming, and traded the Ibanez (guitar) for my Inspire. Maybe I can make some money this way....
Gotta love a Noob with the fever. Ole henrybravo really reamed me once for going on and on, and on....in response to a fellow noobs question. I will admit the possibility that it was warranted.... The resulting post was reminiscent of the dummy books... "Flashing for Noobs, By a Dummy"
Lol, ok man - Welcome and Kudos on your post. I didn't have the balls...

Welcome, but I think these kind of threads clutters the forum. Please enjoy your stay on XDA. I will recommend that you read a lot first.
Enjoy.
New to forums, new to the Sensation 4G.
So far I've had this phone for less than 48 hours. What I've noticed about it thus far is it is fast, and it seems like I'm using maybe 1/16th of it's potential. The only apps I've installed thus far are the Tesla LED flashlight, and Facebook. I've also got a 32GB micro SD card in the mail which should be here Monday, and I've already got a Jawbone Icon for it as well.
What are the worthwhile apps to have on this phone, and are there any other mods that I should be looking into? Is there anything else I should know? Thanks for the help ahead of time.
Edit: Good cases, screen protectors, etc?
Welcome aboard!
Have you S-Off'd or rooted yet?
If not, get to it!
It's a blast and the phone will fly!
No, I haven't done anything to it yet as far as rooting or s-off'd (<-whatever that last one is).
Any chance you can point me to some good threads on both of those subjects? I'm really new to this whole modifying phones thing. I've been building computers for years, but this is obviously different.
Start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
And then look thru the Development section and choose a rom.
The Apps and Themes section also has a lot of goodies.
A lot of things in that section need at least a rooted phone.
To install roms you will need to be S-Off'd.
S-Off = Security Off (Unlocked Bootloader)
Oh yeah...
Remember do a lot of reading.

Hey guys , I'm new to androids too ...... I was on the iPhone hype since the 3g and now I have left my iPhone 4 for an htc sensation ! I believe its on 2.3.4 ..... I'm wondering if that's rootable and can it be done on my MacBook ?! Sorry for newbish questions ..... Thanks in advance for any and all help

You can root from a Macbook. There are a few threads in the development section on it.
But if you want to s-off , you will need a windows or Linux machine.
Or you can install windows on your MAC.

Also, can you point me to a good thread or something on the insertcoin? I have no idea what that is or even does and I'd want to of course compare to other programs/mods that do the same thing.
Thanks.

After dropping my first captivate in a river early this year, I finally got a new one a couple weeks ago.
I must say things have changed a lot around here, after reading for a few days I am finally caught back up on everything I missed

There are already a lot of ICS threads on here. I believe the A6 ROM was posted on the "ICS ported to i897" thread in the development section.

I would never go there for roms.
I am running A6 as we speak which I got from these forums.
Camera doesn't work (for video or pictures)
SU doesn't work (haven't toyed with workaround yet)
3g (I am trying work arounds now, doesn't work by default)
Still a really impressive interface to play around with, and I think I can live with the cons for a little while until a more stable rom gets hosted. I will say I am in love with this os though.
The interface alone is so modern and fresh feeling I can't entirely explain it.
kjdoug............THIS is the only site you need to mod your captivate. forget any torrent site when it comes to the OS on your phone.
BTW welcome to the forum! READ lots, you will learn, also there are a lot of top notch guys on here that will help you out.

Waiting for more of the bugs to be worked out before I flash it. I use my phone for work so it has to be almost 100% stable

and ICS beta1 works mighty fine, i might add!
So does CM team's Build 3....
Yes I would recommend the CM9 version (or working towards it) if you want to try out ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
The 3g works without any manipulations, almost everything works as a matter of fact. Calendar sync did need some .apk switched in to get calendar working in beta2 but at least for me in beta3 I didn't have to redo anything. All my apps from tibu work and download correctly. It just seems to be very smooth.
PS. I also upgraded to the ATT SGS2 and love it but I also have my cappy as backup and love messing with all the roms for it still. Basically testing it all out. Plus I am pleasantly surprised that the cappy got ICS before the SGS2.

yahh I'm on the Beta 1 dev version, I feel it is smoother, there is no need for scripts anymore, everything works without doing extra flashes(besides kernel and superuser). I get much better battery life out of this one too! The one from DemonWav's thread.
