Whenever I try to play 1080p videos on my phone they lag significantly for about a minute and eventually the player crashes.
I used Rock Player Light and the default Video player included with Ninja (ROM).
Any ideas as to what the issue could be?
i use mobo player it plays 1080p perfectly..if u still have problems overclock to 1.2ghz and set performance mode ONLY WHILE UR PLAYING THE VIDEO u can keep it clocked at 1.2 ghz but use some other governor like ondemand,performance will suck up ir battery..
Idk about 1080p but I have Mobo Video Player Pro and my 720p mkv and mp4 videos play perfectly.

720p plays perfectly on my phone as well, I just don't want to have to convert all my 1080p things to 720p every time I want to put them on my phone. I'm about to try overclocking it, hopefully it'll work out. If not, i'll stick to 720.

dont think it will... altough i can play 720p mkv very smoothly with Diceplayer !! did test a couple 1080p which wasnt that smooth....altough i heard that converting into .mp4 results into much better playback because of native support
Of course it can play 1080p videos.
Using the standard Gallery, it can play the 1080p videos that the camcorder records, and it can (so far) play any 1080p MP4 video that I put on the SD-Card or stream from my media server.
There will be some file formats that it won't play, of course, but that's a problem with the format rather than the resolution.
It will also play 1080p MP4 videos through my Sony Bravia TV via DLNA.

sjgore, I see you got HTC Desire too. And it have trouble playing some 720p mkv, never been able to make it play any 1080p. MoboPlayer is the best all around player from point of format support, speed and UI. But there is like a dozen players that based on FFmpeg library around(VPlayer, QQplayer, VitalPlayer, RockPlayer etc...). Was wondering if new generation of hardware is able to support 1080p to the point that there is no need to **** mind about how fast particular video player and choose one solely based on convenience of use and price...

I haven't even tried any 3rd party players from the Market on the Sensation yet, everything so far has been achieved with what comes built into the phone (ie. just Gallery).

Camcorder 720p clip are H.264 720p Baseline. 1st gen. snapdradon ( QSD8260 ) can play 720p Baseline profile.
but most of 720p/1080p movies are H.264 High profile level 3~5.
If file format is MP4(H.264+AAC), stock player can play .
Many of HD movies are MKV/AVI format and audio codec is AC-3(5.1ch) or DTS or Flac.
ffmpeg base player can not play HD ( 720p/1080p ). Decoding & rendering need too much CPU power.
If you want to play HD(with DTS/AC-3/FLAC + MKV/AVI) clips, use diceplayer.
How well does this operate on the sensation? How smooth is the playback of 1080p MKVs? Also, can I play this on rockplayer for example or diceplayer and connect it up to my TV and watch it over HDMI?

Well I'm not sure if you know this but there are currently no accessories for MHL that can be utilized in the Sensation. Therefore, it can't be connected to a TV yet which explains why nobody is answering your question. Wait for the MHL dongle to come out and I'm sure people will start saying something.
trying to play 720p mkv just on the phone and its dropping alot of frames.
Tried QQ player and rockplayer but still not enough power to decode the movie in software.
May have to convert the file to mp4 to allow the hardware acceleration!
will try over the weekend and let you know
As of yet, nothing can play MKV's properly I don't think even the SGS II can.

It can. I've just played a 720p MKV and it handled skipping, pausing etc like any other .avi file.
Sorry. Didn't read the title. OP was asking about 1080p. Not sure if I have any 1080p things to play.

I'll test this and get back to you later. I'm sure I've got a 1080p mkv somewhere on my PC.
I'm pretty sure the Sensation's software isn't optimized. I think when we see some custom ROMs (e.g. Android Revolution by mike1986) we may be able to play MKV's
I can play 720p and 1080p mp4 (h.264 High Profile at any bitrate + AAC) videos without any stuttering, using hardware acceleration.
MoboPlayer and DicePlayer can play 720p and 1080p MKV but with some little stuttering.

Just tried moboplayer with my 720p test MKV file and it does play alot better than rock player but still not at full speed.
This may be due to the bitrate of my MKV file though (5500kbps)

Tried the trial of diceplayer and it plays my 720p MKV file perfectly

Thanks a lot for testing that out, much appreciated. A lot more useful than the guesstimates made by others in this thread.
My Sensation was unable to play a 720P 60fps H.264 8 Mbit MP4 perfectly smoothly in the stock Movies application. Playback on the SGS2 was noticeably smoother, even from a USB key. I will try it with Diceplayer... VPlayer was even worse though.
EDIT: Seems to playback reasonably well in Diceplayer, and perhaps a little bit smoother in Rockplayer. This could all be placebo though!

your test file is mp4. so rock or stock or any other player works same way.
(using embedded media player module)
if you test MKV/H.264-High/DTS or Flac encoded files, you can find differences.
MKV is just a container for MPEG-4 in most cases. I don't see your point.

point is mkv container is not recognised by the sensation default video player, so although the video stream should be played back via hardware decoding it is not.
Most other players that do recognise .mkv files use software decoding, which is fine for AVI (DivX/XviD) or low bitrate h264 files, but at higher bitrates the frames start droping.
Diceplayer is good because after it splits the MKV audio/video streams it recognises that the h264 video stream can be decoded via hardware, this allows much higher bitrates to be played smoother and should consume less battery as the cpu is not thrashing its nuts off.
It may be that in a future software update MKV are supported by the default player, as it is on the SGS2
I wonder if Android Revolution HD or CyanogenMod could play 1080p MKV with Diceplayer or similar, on the Sensation. Would be utterly fantastic if they could!

Have you tried Tiamat Kernel with both CPU and GPU overclock? Are you using software or hardware video decoding?
FYI, I am running stock 3.2 image.

I've been using mx video player. It plays 720p files without a problem.
Buy dice player...
Install Mobo Player and QQ Player, and then buy Dice Player, it plays high profile 720p H264 without a hitch. You can also use XenonMKV to convert the audio in your high profile videos (without re-encoding video) and play them back in the stock player without issues. Takes about 15 minutes to convert and rebuild a 2 hour movie on my laptop, video is untouched in the process. I did that once, but it's much easier (and well worth the ~$5) to buy Dice Player.
can the tf 101 play back HD videos in 720p or 1080p with good performance? so far ive treid .mkv, .wmv and .mp4 108ßp files but all of them were way too slow or didnt play at all - is there something one has to do in orderto play HD movies, or is the tf101 too weak?
I've played 720p MKV's and MPEGs with reasonable performance on the stock ROM, but whenever i try to play anything 1080p the wheels start coming off. AFAIK b/c the transformer doesn't have a 1080p screen it won't be able to play 1080p videos (or if it can, it has to downsize them) and that's why it goes haywire whenever i try
In my own experience, I've found that using .avi format encoded with h246 codec (I use TVC) works surprisingly well. I've only converted 720p vids and they run damn smooth. Haven't tried 1080p. Don't need to really. More pixels and I think my eyes might bleed.

720p (either mkv, avi or mp4) works okay when using player capable of HW decoding, like MX or Dice Player. I'm not sure about 1080p, but i doubt it would work with acceptable performance.

Ah yes! Very true. Be sure to go to the Market and download "Mobiplayer" and all its codecs. That's your best video player for the tablet right there. That's what I use to play my files. TF definitely can play these resolutions, but it depends on the format, like on any device.
Rumor is that 1080p Main/Low profile works with HW decoding, but not the High profiles.
Mx video player or dice works well. Some mkvs play better on dice and vice versa

i think galaxy r has a weak DSP because it records 720p video and doesn't play 1080p videos and i think even 720p playback is limited to [email protected]/4 ref frames.

2)I have S2 - I can't really see the difference between 720p and 1080p on such small screen (4'3") and I don't think any human eye would see it

stock player also does hw acceleration, and if a dual core phone doesnt play 1080p video, then at least it should have full 720p support
yes but stock player doesn't play all video formats the two players above do.
BTW. these samples are far away from HQ-quality, especially divine enrique is extremely pixelated I don't think it'll make any difficulty for SGR, but let's wait and see.

stock player doesnt play all formats because it does hw decoding only while mx and dice can do both hw and sw decoding which uses cpu and drains battery much faster than hw
and it is not about quality(bit rate), what matters is resolution(720p) and codec settings([email protected] frames)
I tried to play these 2 videos..
stock player was unable to play both the videos..
but. mx player with fast sw decoding played both clips very well...

our R only play 25 fps videos in only mp4 format but u can use other players like VPlayer to play like mkv format files ok

but some times 1080p files are in 25fps so we can play it on our device ....
i xtremly recommanded to u use other players like VPlayer
coz in vpplayer we can play 30fps files but thay are some times little bit laggy

Hey i tried using vplayer to play a video, its still lags.....
The video is a dvd rip movie and a mkx format (i guess, though not sure abt the format) and apprx 1.7GB. When i tried playing through stock app, it didnt played.
When i tried using mx and dice, they played but a bit laggy.
but when i used xplayer, its more laggy
and upon using hardware decoder in mx,dice its unable to play
is there any solution play such video without any lag on our R ??

this phone doesn't play anything in stock player(hardware decoding) above 720p [email protected]/3 ref frames, you can download media info to know the specs of the videos you want to play:

i guess if you want play anything above that smoothly using CPU( software decoding), you should use NEON optimized codecs for the player you installed like mx neon codecs from here:

but, you should install mx player first
