I was planning on rooting my brother's Inspire yesterday, but when I connected it to the computer via USB the computer freezes.
The computer freezes once I connect it. It doesn't matter if it's on Charge Only or Disk Drive. I have another computer with Linux and when I connect it, it doesn't recognize it.
It's not the cable because I have an Inspire as well and when I connect it to either my Windows or Linux computer both of them recognize it with no problems.
I think it might be the SD card that's messed up. If that's the case should I format it and if so how do I backup all the files on it and what method do I use to format it.

Did you get the drivers for it? Download HTC sync for the driver.

Put sd card into card reader and just copy the whole thing into a file. You can decide what you want to pull back onto the card after you format it. Just format as fat 32. This problem does seem rather unusual though, especially since you have another inspire that works just fine. It may be time to warranty it if your not within your 30 days.
One thing I would do is download ace hack kit, put phone into debugging mode, plug phone into computer and run ace hack kit. If you get to the menu then the phone is recognizable. If ace hack kit says that it cannot recognize anything then the phone may be damaged.

Gizmoe has a good point, but i think you should try this also, just to see if the sd card is causing the problem...
make a backup of your sd card (copy entire contents to a folder on your computer, this is more of a just in case kind of thing, not entirely necessary though)
pull his sd card out of his phone, plug phone into computer and if it doesnt freeze, start the ace hack kit up to see if it recognizes the phone, like Gizmoe said though, make sure USB debugging is enabled.
to double check its actually the sdcard:
put his sd card into your phone and plug your phone into the computer and see what happens. if it freezes then the problem is in fact the sd card. i dont know HOW this would happen, but technology does craziness sometimes.
all you are doing here is troubleshooting and seeing if the problem follows the sd card.
I took out my brother's SD card and put it in my phone and it worked! Both computers recognized it, Windows didn't freeze and ace hack kit recognized it as well.
When I plugged my brother's phone into my Windows computer without the SD card though...it froze.
So apparently the phone is the problem. I backed up all the files from my SD card. What should I do now?
(And yes USB Debugging was on and I have the drivers)
the only thing i can think of is clean the usb port on the phone itself (have the battery out when you do this, just in case), try it on a 3rd computer if you can just to be sure.... then maybe a factory reset, if none of that works, i hope he has insurance on the phone so he can get a replacement....
What kind of stuff exactly would a factory reset erase? Would he be able to get his contacts back? Would his HTC Sense account still be there? Is there a way to backup the apps he has?

he can backup his contacts by going into the phonebook (people), hitting the menu button and selecting import/export, then export to sd card.
the htc sense account... i'm not sure about, i dont have one, probably never will. in my head, the account will always be available, he'll just have to sign in and possibly set it up again. but like i said, i dont have one, so i cant be sure.
as far as backing up the apps, he can download App Backup & Restore from the market, it doesn't appear to need root access. alternatively, the apps he has downloaded from the market are saved in his My Library (accessible from a browser, pretty sure the market app only shows what is currently on your phone). I havent found an app that can backup apps + data that didnt need root. the one i mentioned up there only does apps.
the factory reset will return it back to stock. i'd use the stock recovery (vol down + pwr) and reset it that way. this is just speculation, i have no idea if it will fix your problem. but i can almost guarantee that if he calls it in, they'll tell him to do a factory reset.
NOTE: BEFORE you go through with the factory reset, backup his sd card just in case the factory reset deletes the sd card to.
the steps i would follow:
backup contacts to sd card
download, install and run App Backup & Restore
remove the sd card, put it in a phone that doesnt freeze the computer and backup the contents
THEN i would do the factory reset. i'd try the one that is in the Settings menu first, if that didnt work, then i'd try the one in recovery. try it with the sd card out, if it doesnt work (unlikely) put the sd card back in.

If you're unsure about doing the factory reset yourself, i'd just call AT&T... that way if THEY tell you to do it and something crazy happens, it's gonna be on their heads.
and make sure you tell them that you have a second inspire that you can plug in and it works just fine that way they dont try to pin the problem on the computer.

Factory reset wipes data and cache partition and returns the system partition to default shipping state. Contacts will come back if a Google account is being used and allowing Google to backup data is checked. Application data will be erased for good. Applications themselves will redownload upon signing back into Google account on phone(maybe, sometimes it does not). Htc sense account will require you to sign back in. All downloaded htc content should have remained untouched on sd card, although I do not know if factory reset makes that stuff unrecognizable, it may have to be downloaded again so your system actually recognizes the content. Without root you can not back up applications. If you had root there are several programs to do this, titanium backup being the most popular.
I agree that you should clean the USB port on the phone in case there is anything shorting out a pin.
Just use a toothpick to get all the stuff out and gently rub the contacts. To me it does sound like the port is bad. I would just do a warranty return. Try the factory reset first though just to be sure.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using XDA App
I can verify sd card is left untouched during a reset unless you specifically choose to do so.
Also, in case both bikes post and mine sound confusing, you can back up apps just not application data. But backing up just apps is already supposed to be a Google account feature but it doesn't always work so some people use an app for that.

Maybe it's the PC
So does your Brother's HTC lock up on your PC (I didn't see that you had tested that). I know that some PC's can have damage to the USB port that can cause the laptop to freeze when anything is plugged in.

its his brothers phone that freezes the computer. his own personal inspire works and connects just fine. its his brothers inspire that is causing the problem
Just to make sure I tried my brother's phone again. Tried it on Windows XP, Vista, and Linux. Tried different USB ports and still nothing. XP freezes and Vista and Linux don't recognize it. Also tried cleaning the port and problem remains while my Inspire works.
He was able to plug it in the computer before so it's not an out of the box problem. So you guys think I should do a factory reset then?

I would try that and if no go, then warranty or insurance. Did he drop it or anything? Sometimes you hit these devices with enough pressure in just the right spot and you can damage stuff.

I use the Factory Reset in Settings > SD & Phone Storage right?
Yeah you can do it through there or from bootloader. I would just do it from bootloader.

Sorry for the delay. I just did it from bootloader and it didn't work. The computer still freezes when I plug the phone in
His wallpaper that he downloaded came back though and his bookmarks are still there. Shouldn't that have been erased?
at this point, i'm not sure it matters. time to get a replacement....

Hello,
still relatively new here and have been having a good experience in general (other than wife complaining i am spending too much time on the forum )
I have a Orange Kaiser, using DCS 1.5 and a 1.64 radio. So far so good,...but tonight is a nightmare:
- My SD card, a 8GB model, is showing NO FILES on file explorer, other than a ttom file: I hard reset, and still nothing. But the memory programm is showing 3.5GB is used on the card. I browsed the card on my PC...same thing! I used to have maps, photos, cab files,... I tried scanning the card on my pc, and it did find a lot of lost files, but not usable. I basically am reformating the card since I have most on my PC, except for a few pictures. Did that happen to anyone before? I hope it does not happen too often, but a good lesson learnt on backup!
- The most annoying thing is that after hardware reset the Kaiser I still cannot connect the Kaiser to my PC! When I connect through a USB cable, I would see the carging led lit, but no connection. I have vista and upgraded to the latest 6.1 windows mobile device center, and still nothing. THis is really annoying as I cannot even flash a new ROM! I tried on my wife PC, tried several USB cables, and still the same.. Any idea? Should I jsut go to bed
Hopefully I can solve this one as I can't do much without it!
Thanks for any tip.

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but I've heard of quite a few of the larger Micro SD Cards (4GB/8GB) wiping themselves. I never looked deep into the cause though. As for your Active Sync, can you connect to a Windows XP based computer?
Just a couple days ago my 2GB MicroSD started refusing to write, kicking back errors that the disk was full (with 1.5GB free)
I copied all the data off and reformatted the card, copied it back, and it was fine. Must have been a corruption in the FAT.. caused by.. who knows!

You can put the phone in boot loader mode (hold down the camera button and do a soft reset) disable activesync on your PC then flash to another ROM or go back to the factory ROM. Hope this helps

Sounds like you need to format the card. That usually works when they give errors like that.

Wow, scary thread. I think I'll back my card up right now. I install program files onto it frequently, I'd hate to lose all of that suddenly.

Ok, will try this, I am sure I could be yelled at because it is in the wiki somewhere, but how would I load the new ROM without the USB connection working? Boot form SD card?
I will also try another XP machine at work. Maybe it is a stupid security setting from Vista....
Thanks all for the feedback.

PS: Thanks for the other comments on the card. I re-formatted it (using a SD card reader), and now it looks fine, I was able to read my files again copied form the PC. Everyobyd make sure you backup for SD card often is all I would say!
Once you have the phone in bootloader mode and activesync disabled. Just run the rom like you normally would if it was connected thru activesync. It will recognize the phone and start the flash.

Problems Solved!
SD CARD not showing any files
I had to basically reformat it and lost all my files (4.5G worth). Fortunately I have 99% on my PC. Backing up the PC as we speak!
Lesson learnt: Backup your SD cards often!
Kaiser would not connect through USB
So, after trying XP, USB to PC options, bootloader mode (would do a 260 error), ...
I discovered my mini USB connector inside the Kaiser looked like it was not right (showing 4 pins higher than the other 2 in the middle). One of the engineers at work used his swiss army knife and straightened the inside of the connector, and... it worked. He did say it may not last long, so I may have to exchange the phone, but for now I am connected.
Lesson learnt: Beware when connecting and disconnecting, those connectors are fragile.
Thanks all for your help, and sorry to bother you with my problems.

hi,
I deployed the usbmodeswitch.xap to my wp7 (htc hd7), i switched the mode from zune to diag for usb tethering.
recently, i update phone to "nodo" version. now, my phone is no longer detected or recoginzed by Zune Software. (and charging is not working via usb)
would someone please help to resolve this issue.
Thanks,
CT
Only way to go about that is a hard reset, sorry.
I did hard reset many times to restore back to factory setting but won't help.
is there any apps similar to usbmodeswitch on marketplace so that i can use to change the mode back to zune?
Unfortunately, you'll have to use WiFi sync until you someone can figure a way to jailbreak NoDo.
Either that, or you will have to flash your HTC HD7 with the leaked ROM.
has someone try to swap out the memory card from the other jailbreak phone?
I have 2 hd7 phones. i'm thinking about doing this or should i wait for jailbreak custom rom.
thanks,
ct
swapping a memory card is just asking for a factory reset. basically when you the phone first sets itself up, it creates what is called a RAID-0 setup, where all memory, internal and external, is seen as 1. All phones come with some internal memory, even if it is tiny, but as a result, swapping memory cards will result in corrupt data and the phone will respond with a full factory reset.
thank you so much, Gate Keeper. i thought phone os run directly on sd memory. by swapping the memory of the same hardware, the should be work. i guess i was wrong.
I flashed Khal's ROM the other day and was working around with it and had some stability issues, so I went back to 2.1 until I can figure out some of those problems. Once I flashed back to CBW's 2.1 and re-applied everything that was before, my computer won't recognize my phone as a MASS STORAGE device. My wife has the exact same phone, configured the exact same way (theoretically) and hers pops right up. I know all it is is a simple thing that I am overlooking but I can't find it.
CBW 2.1
App2sd
USB Debugging checked
Mini-Tools Partion does pick it up
Full Titanium Backup (and Nandroid but think it might be corrupted)
Wife's works, mine doesn't
Any ideas on why my computer won't show it as a Removable Disk?

Did you try creating ext partitions on your sd card? It could be that your partitions are out of order. Android requires the first partition to be FAT and all partitions must be primary (no logical partitions allowed). If you don't feel like monkeying with it, you could try just repartitioning and reformat the card. You may have to take it out of the phone to do that, though.

make sure you assign a drive letter to the sdcards win32 partition in windows disk management or with gparted
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844
I do have the Ext 2 partion in order to run App2sd and all my partions are in order (fat, then ext2, then swap). I will check to make sure that the fat is Primary but I am almost positive that none are logical.
At first I thought it would be the Motorola driver but then if it was, why would my wife's work and mine wouldn't. Then I thought it was the card but if it was that then why would Mini Tools Partion Wizard read it. Thought maybe it was the card reader, but again it is recognized by MTPW.
The Tools and Portals works fine and so does the Charge Only option, so that tells me that it is not the USB. Just trying to whittle down all the possible reasons to hopefully narrow it down for it to click for me or someone else what the problem is.
All I want to do is be able again to have my computer show it as removeable disk so I can put more music, files or movies on to it but can't.
Sorry for the long post, too.
Other than reformatting the sdcard I don't know what to tell you but if you have home wifi you could you something like SwiFTP to transfer files to & from your PC.
I jsut plugged it in to my work computer and it shows up as Removable Disk, so that is making me think that it might be something between my home computer and my phone. Why would my wife's work and mine not though on the same computer?
When I get home I will look at the Drive letter and also double check that the Fat isn't somehow set to logical (but I am really sure it isn't). Just really don't want to reflash back again (and again and again).
Thanks for all the help.
Hellmonger, your solution worked. Apparently my drive letter must have been deleted somehow. All is well now. Knew it must have been a simple solution, just sometimes those are the most frustrating ones to find.

Hi, I am running Eclipse's 1.3.1 Rom currently and am having issues with the SD card saving the items I'm downloading from the browser. Initially, when I downloaded files in Dolphin Browser HD it said "Cannot finish download there is not enough space". I have my "Unknown sources" box checked in settings and would be fixed after a good reboot. Although after use of downloading items the downloaded items would disappear from the SD card and history of downloading said items are gone from the browser.
I have tried switching browsers from Dolphin HD to Opera to no avail. For further clarification, Eclipse's Rom to fix the GPS requires you to download the default GPS settings, when I download them on my phone and boot into CWM it's non existent and is gone when I reboot my phone and search through the SD card, along with numerous other files such as GBA roms. Any suggestions and help on my situation? I dont want to have to reinstall a rom.
More info: Now that im home I cannot transfer files over to the phone via USB. The phone mounts and is found on my laptop, but when I transfer the files and unplug the USB it is not found on my phone's SD card. Also, the phone does not have the "USB Connection" sign that comes up and I cannot hit eject on the computer.
I apologize for the double post but a little more information on the subject....
Apps downloaded from the market are completely fine, and they are saved on my SD card.
After a restart I can download files but end up disappearing.
It seems to be an isolated problem with the browser and the SD card
you know they go into the download folder by default and not the root of the card right?

Download this file to your computer. Load it onto the SD card by either using adb, or taking the card out and loading it into a reader. Or if you can think of another way to get it there. Then boot into CWM and flash it.
Then until you learn different I would make flashing that a regular part of ROM installation. Check chadness' full root/rom install instructions in my signature.
I did that initially when I rooted my phone. I restored back to 2.2.1 but it will not let me format my SD Card. I tested it and I cannot delete things from my phone nor add them on....hmm
I was hoping that would work for you. Can you test the card in a reader?

I can't seem to find mine.. and I know it would help a lot of these issues...
I just got this phone last week, I'm gunna bring it into verizon and see what they say. Hopefully they dont see the rom folder I have.
I know I'm paranoid, but I wouldn't give them a rooted phone to look @.
When I took my fassy up there to get the warranty replacement setup, just in case, I stocked the phone first. They didn't even look at the fassy.
But they will have your phone in hand. In the end its about the tech looking at it. If they notice it and/or if they care enough. But if they do mark your acount it would be disappointing if you lost your warranty.
So beware if the phone is rooted. Whats on the card shouldn't matter. Really is none of their business.
edit: this all is my opinion. I don't have any insider knowledge on how verizon or any store employee would react.

I went this morning, did a factory restore to 2.2.1 before I went but still had some files on the SD card. I was a little worried at first but they replaced the SD Card. They did ask for my number so they could mark my account but I dont think it was for warranty issues. Thanks though, I appreciate the help. I just rerooted it and put Humble on it this time.
I was recently given a Htc mozart by a friend who had cracked the screen and bought a new phone, they said I could have it but would like their photos and vids off it so if I could back it up (easy as pie I thought!!!)
The phone charges and functions fine (I changed the digitzer) but when plugged into a pc it displays usb unrecognized error code 43 (malfunction?). I have tried multiple cables, laptops and even os (xp, 7 32bit/64bit and osx), I have searched the internet and have seen some suggestions on wiping the phone (but I don't want to do this until the data is backed up) also looked at reading the micro sd but found you can't by conventional methods.
I have also tried multiple apps - boxfiles, sendstuffnow, sharefile (they seem to allow one photo at a time but not videos), I also tried emailing them but again I can't email vids and the phone has over 500 pics! tried bluetooth and also yivosoft but it doesn't seem to be able to view the files (root access required??), tried a few other programs such as ftp and they just state the phone needs to be updated via zune (currently running 7.0.7004.0).
I was thinking of sticking another microsd card in and formatting it etc just to see if it is then recognised in windows and poss update the firmware then put the old micro sd back in? would this work or is the firmware stored on the micro sd card and also if not when I update would it then state the old micro sd needs formatting or something? If anyone has any suggestions on how I can get the pics and vids off it would be greatly appreciated! I am an android user and this is my first experience with a windows phone so if I am way off my apologies. Thanks again
For sure don't mess with the uSD cards. They're locked to the device (the "S" in SD stands for "Secure" and refers to a rarely-used ability to lock an SD card). Even if you managed to make the card usable again, the data on it would be gone. Also, yes, the OS is at least partially stored on the SD card, and your switch-update suggestion would not work.
WiFi sync would work, but if that's not already set up you'd need to connect the phone to Zune via the USB to set it up. There are some homebrew apps that would be able to lift the files easily enough, but unless you have something lile TouchXplorer or Advanced Explorer installed already, that's not an option (you need USB connection to install more homebrew).
Sorry, man. This is one of the reasons why I plug in my phone to my PC every day or two and sync it; the tiny amount of time it takes is worth the reassurance. I realize that doesn't help now, though...

Thanks for the reply, know what you mean I back up regular also but my friend didn't. I can't believe its so difficult to transfer the files without the usb connection :S also can't believe the updates are no ota :S was hoping there might be a method of unlocking the phone for homebrew like there was with the iphone at one stage.
