[Q] Screen Responds to Touch but No Backlight - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted and ROM'ed Asus Transformer that when you plug in to a monitor via HDMI, you can still use the touchscreen, but the actual screen on the device doesn't light up.
It responds to all input. Has anyone else had this problem?

[Q] Backlight Issue with Brightness Scale

I am having an issue with my TF where I cannot set the Brightness scale to anything but "Auto" - if I attempt to manually change it, the backlight turns off and the only way I can get it back on is to plug the tablet into the charger. The unit then jumps up to 100% brightness, but if I unplug it, the backlight turns off.
When the unit is plugged in, I can move the brightness scale and can see the screen dim and brighten as it should...
I have the latest firmware (8.2.3.9)... any ideas???
Some more info... if the backlight turns off, I can do a reset of the device by holding down the power key and then turning the unit back on. The startup screens do display properly, but when the device comes up, the screen darkens again. You can also make out the time and see some transitions between screens very faintly... its just the backlight that is off, everything else works fine.
The screen illuminates properly once again when plugged in...
The fact that the startup screens (the Asus and eee pad title screens) illuminate properly leads me to believe that this is a software issue. Help!!
Addendum: It appears I CAN adjust the brightness scale without being plugged in somewhat... the backlight turns off if I attempt to slide the brightness scale above 2/3 full brightness or so... anything lower than that is fine (or 'AUTO'). But, again, if the device is plugged in, FULL Brightness is possible.
This is very frustrating... I don't know whether to RMA this (who knows how long this will take), return to BestBuy (who doesn't have any units), or wait for a possible software fix??

ive seen one othet person reporting this problem,
since its not a common problem,
your best bet is to RMA it.
dig in in the forum snd see what the other person did.
what did you do to get this issue sorted? I have the exact same problem whilst running a rooted Transformer running Prime 1.5
Same problem here
I just started having the same issue, too (stock ROM). Tried factory reset, but didn't help.
Has anyone else found a solution, or should I just RMA?

[Q] Screen broken???

A couple days ago the screen on my transformer stopped working it would no longer display anything. I've restarted it many times and nothing ever displays not even the boot sequence. It displays perfectly via hdmi and the touch screen works there is no physical damage to the tablet. It was running prime 1.5 but I have re-flashed it back to stock 3.1 hoping that it would fix the problem but it did not. Has anyone had any similar problems and if you have were you able to resolve them with having to RMA. If any information is needed like logcats or anything let me know and ill be able to get them once I get home from work.

Did you check the screen brightness settings? Did you try turning it on in a dark room to see if the backlight still works? Seems odd to me that you see nothing yet you can still use the device's touch screen if connected to an external display.
yea ive tried adjusting the brightness setting/ turning on auto brightness both things had no effect. When it first started occurring I could faintly see the asus logo when it was turning on but no matter how dark it is now I cant see anything on the screen. thanks for the help hopefully we can figure this out.
Shine a torch on the screen (in a fairly lit environment) and see if you can make out anything on the screen. If you can see screen content then it means the backlight (or the inverter) is faulty. In any case this sounds to me like a hardware fault.

screen malfunction!?

Dear All,
I just came across with the screen problem, just wondering if anyone had this problem or not.
The pad was connected to a power supply when this video was shot, then i disconnected the usb power supply and it went normal again, so i am wondering if this problem or malfunction got anything to do with charging up the pad at the same time...

[Q] New screen problems

I made a post awhile back about a screen problem i had and now i finally got a new screen for my tablet. i installed the screen and when i turn the tablet on, the screen lights up but nothing is displayed. if i connect it through hdmi, i can see everything and the digitizer works fine. i don't know what to do now and was wondering if anyone has an answer to this problem?

TF101 does not display on screen (through hdmi output works fine)

Hi,
my name is Josemari, from Spain.
I have a TF101 with dock (and original rom from Asus) that does not display anything on screen since a soft fall from 10cm (daughter in a very very small chair).
When i plug the charger, it works (and beeps -charge-). When i plug the dock, also beeps. When i connect through hdmi output to my tv, it also works. I can use the tablet perfectly with my fingers.
What can i do?
I disassembled the tablet and i checked all conectors, but i do not see anything wrong.
Thanks.
I had the exact same problem. Even though it has fallen before without a problem, in my last 2 cases it was a loose connection for the video screen. I had to open up the tablet and simply push the video connection back on all the way. It's rather easy if you're familiar with taking things like this apart. Make sure you are careful when you re install the side trim that holds the buttons. It's easy to break the red tabs that press against the buttons. It may be helpful to you to look up a disassembly guide. I believe if you google the specific issue you will find pictures. Again it's been a long time. Hope this helps
I have the same issue since a few days.
Difference here, when I boot up (holding power button until reboot) the screen is on (Asus logo and boot animation)
The display goes balck / disappears (backlight off) when the lock screen comes up.
Checked the inner display cable and connector with no success.
Did a factory reset and it was working again, until I changed the brightness to a higher level. Then the screen was dark again.
I managed to change brightness to a lower level using the working HDMI interface. After that I switched the tablet off and on and the screen was lit up again.
Another effect: when power adapter is plugged in, I can go to a higher brightness level until the backlight turns itself off.
It looks like a hardware defekt of the backlight electronic to me. Couldn't find any spare parts, such as backlight inverter, though.
Can anybody confirm this or knows how to repair?
I will use it at 30-50% brightness now and see if it gets worse over time.
