I live in Canada, picking up a Transformer and would like to root it. I'm scared I might pick on up and find out it's not rootable.
No. Depends on your model. Check the serial sticker on the tf near the bottom. From what I gather those starting with B70 and B80 can't be rooted. Do a search and find out why.
not quite right some b70 can be rooted but its about 50/50 mines a b70kas0224 and from what i have heard they switched the sku at about b70kas240
Is there a way to find out? Yeah researching on the internet isn't going to help.
As the other user stated SOME B70 models can be rooted but anything B80 or later cannot be rooted at this time.
The number doesnt refer to a version number but purely the date of manufacture (B70 = July, B80 = August) and half way through July the key was changed which made the existing root method redundant.
I dont think any of the developers who made the original root method have a newer model so they cannot do the same thing for it. If a developer comes along and purchases a newer model then a root method may be created but right now my first statement holds true.
Your only way to ensure you could get hold of an older model which can definitely be rooted (B60) would be to buy one from a store and ask to see the unit before purchasing it. You could then look at the bottom where the serial number is and check if it starts with B60. If it starts with B70 then its 50/50 whether its the rootable model or not and you couldnt make sure without the check method (via linux) in the development forum.

The number is just the serial number. If you're picking it up in person you can ask to look at the box. The serial number is on the box also since the store might not let you open the box to look at the tab itself. To be safe anything starting with B60 or older is rootable. Like already mentioned some B70 are rootable but it's 50/50.
The serial number shows B60/B70 etc? I thought it didn't :S

If you are in the GTA,
Check out Canada Computers, they got B60 units, I picked up one yesterday . One store is at pacific mall & another in Kennedy Road.

I live in Mississauga and yeah I know a Canada Computers, the problem is that I want to purchase it at Wal Mart because I can get 20% off plus it's $5 cheaper haha
Nice with the discounts!
I guess you have to leverage if 20% and $5 cheaper worth the rooting procedure at this given time (if B70s & B80s can be rooted at a later time)
I managed to secure a good deal:
$389.99 - EEE Pad Transformer 16GB TF101
$89.99 - Keyboard Dock
$5.99 - invisibleSHIELD screen protector
$0.00 - ASUS OEM Sleeve (combo pack with PAD transformer purchase)
$549 AFTER TAXES...
+++ I got a free Class 10, 32GB microSDHC card - birthday gift card used at BestBuy!!!
So, $549 for a 48GB EEE Pad!!!! (Still rocks compared to iPad 2 that I was considering ....)
How long do you expect a root for B80s? and same here,I was considering an iPad 2 aswell. Only think I like about the iPad 2 is it has more apps/better partnership with developers and it's responsive UI.
btw at CC,it's $399 for the 16,how'd you get it for $389?

There isn't an eta it could be a few days or it may never happen. Don't buy a new unit unless you will be happy whether its rootable or not as you may end up disapointed. If you need it to be rooted then make sure to get one from a shop and check the serial number first.

Behind the box, look under the serial, it should start with B50XX,B60XX or so...
From what I learned, only those models with those serial numbers are rootable...and Canada Computers seem to be carrying them.
^^^B40 also but I doubt there's any still around. Early B70 too but I wouldn't take a chance, its 50/50
total n00b question... So I have B70KAS399777... So I can't even use NVFlash to root and install a new ROM?

yeah same here.
now it's down. gets 404 error.
Just checked insight.ca ... they're still showing full price.
Had one in my shopping cart in the US site just before it crashed. Sigh.
if you browse for the items and use the old part numbers, they will be full price. The reduced price ones have a different part number and show up as 99 and 149 respectively. But right now they said their site is down for maintenence.
I tried to find it but could not it said o items found.

I don't see any touchpads for $99, but it seems they are offering it only for $624.99. Wonder if they would cut the price?
well it says there are 5602 in stock, but since i m from canada i can't place my order
I tired placing an order 3 times and got an error each time. I just ordered one for $129 from erwincomp.com. i just got a confirmation email....hopefully this works.

does anyone know what time the erwincomp deal started? i doubt they have that many stock to fulfill all orders damn
btw i ordered more than 3 hours ago so it was around 6.15 am xda time
Well I finally saw on B&N where they officially canceled my order. I just now -- literally 5 minutes ago -- successfully completed an order on erwincomp.com, so we'll see how that goes. I even splurged for super-fast shipping, under the assumption that they're lining up orders based on ship date, not order time. I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist, but this whole damn fiasco just might begin reprogramming my neurons about that, hahahahaha...
BTW, check this **** out...buy.com is selling these suckers for over $800!
That's nuts
i just ordered from erwincomp.com for 129 $ 16GB good deal by the way
i hope its not fraud site
Any places that still have the 32GB model in stock?
I've had and sold a Xoom within the last couple of weeks, OS is lovely and the tablet itself is reall nice but having got into the Kindle and Zinio Apps I found the Xoom just too darned heavy to hold as a "book".
Anyway I know the EEE Pad is lighter having played with them in store and the screen is lovely, I guess my only worry is the 16GB Memory built in v 32GB on the Xoom.
If I buy the Keyboard Dock which I likely will does that mean I can have say 32GB memory in the Micro SD Card slow on the EEE Pad and another card in the slot on the keyboard?
Also whats the story with USB Flash Drives / Portable hard drives, will these work via the USB slot on the Keyboard?
Yes to everything.
Also there's a 32 gb version on the eee pad as well

Been reading around the forums and read some posts on the B70 models, does the bootloader lock mean I can't root?
What would it prevent me from doing? Because I guess if I walk into a shop and buy one its going to be a B70
B70's are more like a gamble. some are using the old bootloader hence rootable. getting the B80's means its definately using the new bootloader so if you want to be able to use apps that require root its best to stay away
also being able to root means you can block ads. ush SSH tunnel install custom rom etc

I've had a Desire and Xoom before and used Titanium Backup specially when rooted.. is there anyway to know if a B70 is rootable from the serial number? Or would I need to buy and then try it?
There is a thread somewhere that posts where the sbk was changed by serial number. Sorry its buried in a dozen other threads about the same subject but I read it recently. If you find that post you could then look at the serial number and know if it had the new or old sbk before you bought it

My understanding is that B7O's with serial a serial number of B7OKAS17XXX and lower are rootable. serial numbers of B7OKAS18XXX and higher are not.

Thanks guys, seems the units in the shop here are either with dock and unrootable or tablet only but rootable, would probably just buy one without the dock if it wasn't so expensive to add it later... Hmm

Is there away if I decided to buy the Transformer, that I can see the serial number? I mean when I go into Bestbuy, is the serial number right on the box? If so what should I look for? I want to be able to root my device, this is the only thing hold me back from buying one, and am kind of leaning towards the GTab because of the rooting ability.
Sure. The serial number is printed on the sides or the back (possibly both, can't remember). I think mine has it printed on the back but I vaguely remember seeing it on the sides too.
It's a rectangular white sticker with black writing all over it and barcodes. The serial number is in the format BXONNNNNNNNN... where the X is the month which I'm sure you already know by now. The ... means I was too lazy to actually count how many alphanumeric chars there are in the serial number string. But the front always starts with BXO.
Happy hunting!
Oh and starting B6O they use black tape to hold the box on either side instead of green tape which is B5O and below.
GTab is crap compared to the Transformer, don't settle for anything less than the best. Unless you're talking about the Galaxy Tab 10.1, I think you're talking about the ****ty Viewsonic G-Tab.

Sorry ya I meant the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Thanks for the information, I will try to go down to the Bestbuy and see if they will let me look at all their Transformer boxes before I buy one.

Last I heard they were not able to root using B7O. Apparently there's a team working on a way around it but you'll have to google for more info. They locked the bootloader since B7O.

Hi Guys
I'm new to the TF forum, but I've had a good year of experience with android after getting my Captivate and doing all sorts of stuff in it.
I just got a B90 transformer, but it appears that anything over B70 can't root or do any modifications to it. That's not really an issue for me if the stock experience is good enough.
I'm guessing a B90 is quite new so I'm wondering if there are any other users with B90s have any issues with it? How is the experience like?
If anyone is wondering why did I get the B90 when I know I can't do anything with it. That's because it was on sale for 449 tablet + dock. I think that's a good price and I needed a tablet and knowing that Asus wouldn't cut the price of the TF with the release of the TF2. However, if the price does drop, I'll just bug my credit card company for price protection guarantee =)
I read that the number there is the month so yours was built in Sept. The problem rooting newer than B70 is they updated part of the bootloader back then apparently and the guys here haven't figured out how to crack it yet.

you are correct, in BxO the x stands for the month of manufacture, however there is a little piece of code on the silicon that is the first piece of code to run that has changed somewhere in august also there are a set of e-fuses which have had a different key burned into them, this key change is what stumped the root to begin with, and the first piece of code that changed is what has tripped up nvflash once the key was revealed to us

Looking at this, they mentioned B70 and B80, but nothing about B90. I wonder if there's any changes between those units in that matter.
I read somewhere that the awesome devs had created a rooting method for b70+, and they were waiting to release it. I have a feeling if you hang tight, you'll get root eventually.
Personally, I required root to run cifs and tun modules in order to stream movies from my fileserver and the ability to VPN into my workplace. YMMV.
Good luck, and welcome to the TF family - it's an awesome device!
Would be interesting, if the B90 transformer has the same SBK like the newer B70's and the B80's.
I mean if it has "Sbk2" or if it has the new "Sbk3" which is also used at the transformer 3G and I think at the asus slider.
Maybe you can try the Sbk-detect from here :

That's mainly what I'm after. I use those on my Nook Color that's on CM7. The real question is why Android ships without those features anyway.

Hi guys, my brother was looking for a tablet, and guess what I ended up suggesting he get?
Well in any case, he saw a deal on newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...m1043X499650Xfaa16997b4c0d9510c73e1ec5aba9518) but I am unable to tell what the serial number will be. It says the model is TF101-B1, but I don't know if that is the batch number or if that is actually the code for the 32gb one..
If anyone knows, please post here asap so I get reply to my brother! Thanks!

The B1 indicates a 32GB model. If your concern is rooting the device, with the new razorclaw app, the serial number doesn't matter, it works for B70+.
Ah, well, there was that, and also, I didn't want to recommend a model more likely to have hardware issues to my brother.. thanks!
At this point, you'll almost-certainly be fine. It's been so long since the Transformer first was released that I'd be extremely surprised if you got anything earlier than a B60. (B40s up are fine)
Yeah, just didn't wanna recommend something to my brother if it had hardware issues, mine is a b5 with slight speaker issues so I don't want him complaining to me.. Especially since I'm telling him to buy a transformer prime and give it to me instead.
